1. Penoscrotal transposition: Long-term outcome in 29 patients

Abstract

Objective: Penoscrotal transposition (PST) is a rare anomaly of the external genitalia characterized by malposition of the penis in relation to the scrotum. This transposition may be partial or complete and may be associated with hypospadias, chordee, and other anomalies. We have reviewed our experience with the surgical repair of PST utilizing a modified Glenn-Anderson technique. Materials and Methods: Twenty-nine patients with a median age of 5.6 years (8 months -15 years) underwent surgical repair of PST at our institution between 2004-2022. Of those, 20 (69%) had complete PST, while 9 (31%) had partial PST. All children were divided into three groups. In the first group of 8 (28%) children, repair of PST was an integral part of one-stage male genitoplasty; in the second group of 18 (62%) children, repair of PST was an isolated last stage of the staged hypospadias repair and the remaining 3 (10%) children underwent PST repair without the presence of hypospadias. All patients underwent modification of the Glenn-Anderson technique involving utilization of bilateral rotational advancement scrotal flap, complete de-tethering of the testis from the internal part of the scrotum when indicated, and relocation of the scrotal compartment in a normal dependent position. The follow-up ranged from 6 months to 18 years. Results: In the first group, five children (62%) underwent Onlay Prepucial Island Pedicle Flap (OIF) hypospadias repair, and three (38%) underwent Long Tubularized Incised Plate Repair (TIP). In the second group, 8 (44%) underwent OIF hypospadias repair, 2 (12%) had Long TIP repair, and the remaining 8 (44%) underwent staged hypospadias repair. Post-operative Clavien Dindo grade III presented among three patients in group I and only one patient in group II. In the third group, no postoperative complications were observed. Conclusion: Our data show that penoscrotal transposition correction utilizing the Glenn-Anderson technique is a reliable and durable surgery in the pediatric population. These children require careful monitoring till adolescence to ensure that no re-operation is needed.

Abstract

Reliable identification of plant species in the digestive tract of a deceased animal often represents the major key to diagnose a lethal intoxication with poisonous plants in veterinary pathology. In many cases, identification of the species is challenging or even impossible because the diagnostic morphological features have been degraded, and because the interpretation of such features requires a considerable expertise in plant anatomy and biodiversity. The use of DNA barcoding markers can support or even replace classical morphological assessment. While these markers have been widely used for plant taxonomy, their forensic application to clarify causes of animal poisoning is novel. In addition, we use specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms as fingerprints. This allows for a clear decision even in cases, where the conventionally used statistical e-values remain ambiguous. In the current work, we explore the feasibility of this strategy in a couple of exemplary cases, either in concert with anatomical diagnostics, or in cases where visual species identification is not possible, or where chemical toxin detection methods are not well established, complex, time consuming and expensive.

Abstract Data on the relationship between antimicrobial resistance and mortality remain scarce, and this relationship needs to be investigated in intensive care units (ICUs). The aim of this study was to compare the ICU mortality rates between patients with ICU-acquired pneumonia due to highly antimicrobial-resistant (HAMR) bacteria and those with ICU-acquired pneumonia due to non-HAMR bacteria. We conducted a multicenter, retrospective cohort study using the French National Surveillance Network for Healthcare Associated Infection in ICUs (“REA-Raisin”) database, gathering data from 200 ICUs from January 2007 to December 2016. We assessed all adult patients who were hospitalized for at least 48 h and presented with ICU-acquired pneumonia caused by S. aureus, Enterobacteriaceae, P. aeruginosa, or A. baumannii. The association between pneumonia caused by HAMR bacteria and ICU mortality was analyzed using the whole sample and using a 1:2 matched sample. Among the 18,497 patients with at least one documented case of ICU-acquired pneumonia caused by S. aureus, Enterobacteriaceae, P. aeruginosa, or A. baumannii, 3081 (16.4%) had HAMR bacteria. Abstract

ABSTRACT Presently, Malaysia is fostering growth in the green energy sector in order to reduce its carbon emissions and contribute in the fight against global warming. Renewable Energy (RE) such as solar cell could no longer be considered as a green technology because at the end of their lifecycle, they become non- biodegradable waste which in turn constitutes pollution and contributes to global warming. Thus, the aim of this research is to study a self-sustaining solar module produced by upcycling solar cells from non- biodegradable waste. Several solar cells from electronic devices were reused in this study. The results obtained show that a combination of 4V, 3V and 2V reused solar cells produced 10.20V and 47.9mW of power. This indicates that the proposed upcycled solar module is feasible and has the potential to aid in the promotion of clean and renewable energy use in order to attain the desired sustainable development goals. Abstract

BackgroundData on growth of Israeli school children show that children from Jewish ultra-orthodox Haredi and Bedouin Arab families have a higher prevalence of stature below the 3rd percentile. While these populations are usually from lower socioeconomic strata, they also have larger families. This study aimed to evaluate if family structure and the timing of a child’s infancy–childhood transition (ICT) are central to variations in stature.Study DesignWe analyzed the association between family size, birth order and inter-birth interval with child growth and the age at ICT in 3 groups of children, 148 high birth order children from large families (LF ≥ 6), 118 low birth order children from large families (LF ≤ 3) and 150 children from small families (SF).ResultsHigh birth order children from large families were shorter in childhood than children from small families with a difference of 0.5 SDS in length. We found that birth length and birth order explained 35% of the total variance in infancy length whereas ICT age and infancy length explained 72% of the total variance in childhood length.ConclusionInfancy and childhood length are compromised in children from large families. As the family grows larger the younger children tend to be shorter. Reduced length gain in the period between infancy to childhood is when growth is most affected.

11. Radiometric Characterization of a Water-Based Conical Blackbody Calibration Target for Millimeter-Wave Remote Sensing

Abstract

In this paper, we present the design and radiometric characterization of a water-based conical blackbody calibration target to be applied as a precise reference source in laboratories and for the accurate calibration of ground-based microwave instruments. The concept of aqueous blackbody targets circumvents the conflict between the electromagnetic and thermal properties of traditional calibration target designs. The temperature controllable target consists of a conical low loss plastic shell, which has been manufactured using a stereolithography three-dimensional printer to define the water-air interface. An advanced exponential profile of the shell is used to compensate the comparatively high refractive index of water and to obtain a high emissivity. Simulations and active measurements of the coherent backscattering S11 have been performed verifying its excellent electromagnetic properties. Furthermore, radiometric measurements at 110 GHz demonstrate the outstanding thermal performance at various target temperatures between 10 and 60 °C. The differences between the brightness temperature and the water temperature are measured to be less than 40 mK and therefore significantly smaller in comparison to traditional calibration targets. In addition, the measured baseline ripples in the spectra caused by the water-based calibration target are small compared to established blackbody concepts.

Abstract

Abstract Background The ongoing extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) pandemic has led to an increasing carbapenem use, requiring release of guidelines for carbapenem usage in France in late 2010. We sought to determine factors associated with changes in carbapenem use in intensive care units (ICUs), medical and surgical wards between 2009 and 2013. Methods This ward-level multicentre retrospective study was based on data from French antibiotic and multidrug-resistant bacteria surveillance networks in healthcare facilities. Antibiotic use was expressed in defined daily doses per 1000 patient-days. Factors associated with the reduction in carbapenem use (yes/no) over the study period were determined from random-effects logistic regression model (493 wards nested within 259 healthcare facilities): ward characteristics (type, size…), ward antibiotic use (initial antibiotic use [i.e., consumption of a given antibiotic in 2009], initial antibiotic prescribing profile [i.e., proportion of a given antibiotic in the overall antibiotic consumption in 2009] and reduction in the use of a given antibiotic between 2009 and 2013) and regional ESBL-PE incidence rate in acute care settings in 2011. Results Over the study period, carbapenem consumption in ICUs (n = 85), medical (n = 227) and surgical wards (n = 181) was equal to 73.4, 6.2 and 5.4 defined daily doses per 1000 patient-days, respectively. Release of guidelines was followed by a significant decrease in carbapenem use within ICUs and medical wards, and a slowdown in use within surgical wards. The following factors were independently associated with a higher probability of reducing carbapenem use: location in Eastern France, higher initial carbapenem prescribing profile and reductions in consumption of fluoroquinolones, glycopeptides and piperacillin/tazobactam. In parallel, factors independently associated with a lower probability of reducing carbapenem use were ICUs, ward size increase, wards of cancer centres, higher initial third-generation cephalosporin (3GC) prescribing profile and location in high-risk regions for ESBL-PE. Conclusions Our study suggests that a decrease in 3GCs in the overall antibiotic use and the continuation of reduction in fluoroquinolone use, could allow reducing carbapenem use, given the well-demonstrated role of 3GCs and fluoroquinolones in the occurrence of ESBL-PE. Thus, antibiotic stewardship programs should target wards with higher 3GC prescription proportions to reduce them.

Abstract

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are key contributors to the current global biodiversity crisis. Psittaciformes (parrots) are one of the most vulnerable avian taxa and psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) is the most common viral disease in wild parrots. PBFD is caused by the beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), which belongs to the Circoviridae family and comprises a circular, single-stranded DNA genome. BFDV is considered to have spread rapidly across the world and, in 2005, an outbreak of PBFD was documented in the recovering population of the Mauritius parakeet (Alexandrinus eques). The Mauritius parakeet was once the world’s rarest parrot and has been successfully recovered through 30 years of intensive conservation management. Molecular surveillance for the prevalence of BFDV was carried out across a 24-year sample archive spanning the period from 1993 to 2017, and DNA sequencing of positive individuals provided an opportunity to assess patterns of phylogenetic and haplotype diversity. Phylogenetic analyses show variation in the extent of viral diversification within the replicase protein (Rep). Timeseries of BFDV prevalence and number of haplotypes reveal that two subsequent waves of infection occurred in 2010/2011 and 2013/2014 following the initial outbreak in 2005. Continued disease surveillance to determine the frequency and intensity of subsequent waves of infection may benefit future translocation/reintroduction planning. The continued growth of the Mauritius parakeet population despite the presence of BFDV bodes well for its long-term persistence.

14. Embedded Managers in Informal Learning Spaces

Abstract

Many universities have decided to invest in updating their informal learning spaces. One decision to be made in planning the space is how to staff it. The researchers carried out a qualitative case study to better understand the perspective of learning space managers who work in offices within their assigned space. The research generated six themes from the perceptions of the managers, observations of their activities, and document analysis. The authors also introduce a concept that they call "situated spatial interactions" to explain the complexity of student behavior and interactions in informal learning spaces.

Abstract

Background: We aimed to quicken and simplify the detection of Plasmodium in blood samples by developing and testing a pan-Plasmodium real-time PCR for accurate screening of individuals suspected of malaria. Methods: A single primer/probe set for pan-species Plasmodium-specific real time PCR targeting a conserved region of the small subunit 18S ribosomal DNA was designed and evaluated for rapid diagnosis and screening of malaria infections using dried blood smears. FTA cards were used for rapid and simple DNA extraction. Results: The primers and probes showed a positive response with the DNA extracted from bloods infected with P. falciparum and P. vivax but not with DNA extracted from various smears from uninfected blood samples. Seven positive cases positive by both microscopy and nested PCR were found among 280 blood samples taken from in South and Southeast Iran. Five samples were identified as positive for P. vivax and two as positive for P. falciparum. All positive samples were positive by real-time PCR. Furthermore, all 38-blood samples positive by microscopy were positive by real-time PCR. No microscopy-negative samples were positive by real-time PCR. Conclusion: By using a simple FTA card for DNA extraction and by application of the real-time PCR developed in this study, sensitivity similar to nested-PCR and microscopy was achieved. This format simplifies the detection of Plasmodium in large numbers of samples.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance is a key factor in the elaboration of strategies to reduce SSI occurrence and in providing surgeons with appropriate data feedback (risk indicators, clinical prediction rule). AIM: To improve the predictive performance of an individual-based SSI risk model by considering a multilevel hierarchical structure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were collected anonymously by the French SSI active surveillance system in 2011. An SSI diagnosis was made by the surgical teams and infection control practitioners following standardized criteria. A random 20% sample comprising 151 hospitals, 502 wards and 62280 patients was used. Three-level (patient, ward, hospital) hierarchical logistic regression models were initially performed. Parameters were estimated using the simulation-based Markov Chain Monte Carlo procedure. RESULTS: A total of 623 SSI were diagnosed (1%). The hospital level was discarded from the analysis as it did not contribute to variability of SSI occurrence (p = 0.32). Established individual risk factors (patient history, surgical procedure and hospitalization characteristics) were identified. A significant heterogeneity in SSI occurrence between wards was found (median odds ratio [MOR] 3.59, 95% credibility interval [CI] 3.03 to 4.33) after adjusting for patient-level variables. Abstract

In this work we describe the design and present radiometric measurements of a water-based conical blackbody calibration target prototype to be applied as a precise reference source in laboratories and for the accurate calibration of ground-based microwave instruments. The aqueous calibration target circumvents the conflict between the electromagnetic and thermal properties of traditional calibration target geometries. The temperature controllable target prototype consists of a conical low loss plastic shell which has been manufactured using a stereolithography 3D-printer to define the water surface. Radiometric measurements at 110 GHz demonstrate the outstanding thermal performance of the target prototype at various water temperatures between 10 °C and 60 °C.

25. Adopting ultrasound guided PCNL in nephrolithiasis management

Abstract

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the learning curve associated with the adoption of US guided PCNL and demonstrate that it can be carried out safely with results comparable to those obtained using standard PCNL.Methods: Prospective study with 65 patients who underwent PCNL between 2019 and 2020. all procedures were performed in supine position and an initial attempt to gain access to the kidney using US was made.Results: Mean procedure duration was 69.5 ± 27.8 min. Fluoroscopy was used with a mean dose of 276.68 ± 560.71 (cGycm3) and mean fluoroscopy time 40.25 ± 77.69 (s). Throughout the study there was a steady decrease in the use of fluoroscopy and amount of radiation to gain access to the kidney to only 25% at the study end. 76.5% of the patients were stone free at follow-up. Complication rate was 9.2%.Conclusions: Fluoroless US guided PCNL is safe, feasible and reproducible procedure.

Abstract

Objective: Candidaemia is a life-threatening infectious disease, associated with septic shock, multiple organ failure, and a high mortality rate. In France, reported data on the incidence of ICU-acquired candidaemia and the causative Candida species are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine temporal trends in epidemiology and risk factors of intensive care unit-acquired candidaemia (ICU-Cand) and ICU mortality among a very large population of ICU patients.Method: Demographics, patient risk factors, invasive device exposure and nosocomial infection in ICU patient were collected from 2004 to 2013 in a national network of 213 ICUs: REA-RAISIN. Incidence and risk factors for candidaemia and ICU mortality were assessed.Results: Out of 246,459 ICU patients, 851 developed an ICU-cand, representing 0.3 per 1000 patients-days. The incidence rose sharply over time. Candida albicans was the main species. The overall and ICU mortality was 52.4% in ICU-cand patients. The main risk factors of ICU-cand were length of stay, severity of illness and antimicrobial therapy at ICU admission, immune status and use of invasive procedure. ICU-cand was an independent risk factor of mortality (OR: 1.53; 95%CI [1.40-1.70]); in a sub-group analysis, independent effects on mortality were observed with C. albicans (OR: 1.45 [1.23-1.71]), Candida tropicalis (OR: 2.11 [1.31-3.39]) and "other" Candida species (OR: 1.64 [1.09-2.45]).Conclusion: ICU candidaemia ranked sixth among bloodstream infections, and its average annual incidence was 0.3 per 1000 patients days. 31. Pediatric urothelial bladder neoplasm.

Abstract

Urothelial bladder neoplasm (UBN) is an uncommon lesion in children and adolescents, without established follow-up protocol defined for this patient group. To report our experience and long-term follow-up data on pediatric patients with urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder. In this retrospective two center study, we analyzed the perioperative and long-term follow-up data of nine pediatric patients, who presented with neoplasms of urothelial origin within the urinary bladder between 2000 and 2021. Nine patients were identified with a mean age of 11.9 years (range 4–19 years) and median follow up of 48 months (range 12–160 month). 7 were male. Gross hematuria was the most common presenting symptom, occurring in 6 patients, followed by accidental finding on US, performed for other reasons. Cystoscopy was performed under general anesthesia, and transurethral resection of the bladder tumors was carried out in the same session. All patients had a solitary tumor with a mean size of 11 mm (range 6–15 mm). Pathology revealed 3 cases of papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (PUNLMP), 5 cases of low grade (LG) noninvasive urothelial carcinoma (UC) and one case of high-grade (HG) UC invading lamina propria (pT1). All 8 patients with low grade tumor underwent follow up according to adult follow-up protocols without tumor recurrences to date. The single patient with HG pT1 UC, a 14-year-old female after renal transplantation, who was not eligible for intravesical bacillus Calmette–Guerin (BCG) installations due to immunosuppression, underwent 6 sessions of Radiofrequency-induced Thermo-chemotherapy with mitomycin, without complications. She had no recurrence to date, during a 4-year post treatment follow up. Pediatric non muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), seems to have a good prognosis with infrequent recurrences, which might be in favor of a more spacious follow up plan with less invasive diagnostic modalities as opposed to adult NMIBC population. Abstract

In the context of regenerative medicine, the use of RNA interference mechanisms has already proven its efficiency in targeting specific gene expression with the aim of enhancing, accelerating or, more generally, directing stem cell differentiation. However, achievement of good transfection levels requires the use of a gene vector. For in vivoapplications, synthetic vectors are an interesting option to avoid possible issues associated with viral vectors (safety, production costs, etc.). Herein, we report on the design of tripartite polyionic complex micelles as original non-viral polymeric vectors suited for mesenchymal stem cell transfection with siRNA. Three micelle formulations were designed to exhibit pH-triggered disassembly in an acidic pH range comparable to that of endosomes. One formulation was selected as the most promising with the highest siRNA loading capacity while clearly maintaining pH-triggered disassembly properties. A thorough investigation of the internalization pathway of micelles into cells with tagged siRNA was made before showing an efficient inhibition of Runx2 expression in primary bone marrow-derived stem cells. This work evidenced PIC micelles as promising synthetic vectors that allow efficient MSC transfection and control over their behavior, from the perspective of their clinical use.

Background: Multisite information regarding surgical site infection (SSI) rates for cardiac surgery programmes is not widely available. Ward characteristics that may affect outcomes have not been analysed previously.Aim: To determine individual- and ward-level factors associated with SSI occurrence after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valvular surgery.Methods: A dataset from the French national SSI database ISO-RAISIN 2008-2011 was used. Only adult patients were included. A standardized questionnaire was completed for each patient who underwent surgery, and patients with and without SSI were characterized. Patients and ward risk factors for SSI were analysed using a multilevel logistic regression model with SSI as binary outcome (two levels: patient and ward).Results: Out of 8569 patients from 39 wards, the SSI rate was 2.2%. Micro-organisms were isolated in 144 patients (74%): 35% coagulase-negative staphylococci (N = 51), 23% Staphylococcus aureus (N = 33), 6% Escherichia coli (N = 8). Higher probability of SSI was associated with the duration of preoperative hospitalization, the duration of follow-up, the duration of surgery >75th percentile and the SSI rate in the surgery ward. The residual heterogeneity between wards (median odds ratio: 1.53) was as relevant as duration of preoperative hospitalization (odds ratio: 1.57).Conclusion: Although patient risk factors were more strongly associated with SSI occurrence, this study provided evidence for the existence of a ward-level effect. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important pathogen of complicated pneumonia in intensive care units (ICUs). Our objective was to determine 'patient' and 'ward' risk factors for P. aeruginosa pneumonia among patients with nosocomial pneumonia in ICU. Data from the 2004-2006 prospective French national nosocomial infection surveillance in ICUs (REA-RAISIN) were used, including patients admitted for >48 h in ICU and who developed nosocomial pneumonia. Only first pneumonia was considered and categorised as either P. aeruginosa pneumonia or other micro-organism pneumonia. Multilevel logistic regression model (patient as first level and ward as second) with P. aeruginosa pneumonia as binary outcome was performed. Of 3,837 included patients from 201 different wards, 25% had P. aeruginosa pneumonia. P. aeruginosa was significantly more frequent in late onset pneumonia. Higher probability of P. aeruginosa pneumonia was associated with higher age and length of mechanical ventilation, antibiotics at admission, transfer from a medical unit or ICU, and admission in a ward with higher incidence of patients with P. aeruginosa infections. Lower probability of P. aeruginosa was associated with traumatism and admission in a ward with high patient turnover. Our analyses identified a patient's profile and some ward elements that could make suspect P. aeruginosa in case of nosocomial pneumonia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We conducted interviews with a subsample of men (n= 26) participating in the Prostate Cancer Lifestyle Trial (PCLT), who had biopsy-proven prostate cancer (Gleason grade <7; prostate-specific antigen 4–10 ng/mL) and chose “watchful waiting” after diagnosis. The PCLT aimed at improving diet, exercise, stress management practices, and group support within a peer community setting. The aims of this study were to examine psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social reactions to (a) a diagnosis of early stage prostate cancer and (b) participation in the PCLT. Qualitative analyses were completed using MAXqda. Results indicated that the cancer diagnosis was met with anxiety, distress, and denial, or a “bump in the road” attitude. There was some indication that conflict with partners was exacerbated by the diagnosis. A significant component of the lifestyle intervention was involvement in the peer community. This community provided opportunities to experience connections with others facing similar health difficulties. Men generally expressed positive attitudes (emotionally, physically, and spiritually) about the lifestyle change, and felt that their participation in the program contributed to feelings of hope, optimism, and fighting spirit. Additionally, participants frequently mentioned increased comfort with emotional expression.

43. Glans injury during ritual circumcision.

Abstract

Circumcision is one of the most performed surgical procedure in the world, often performed for nontherapeutic reasons. Depending on cultural and social backgrounds, the procedure may be performed by various sources; from trained health care practitioners to laypeople, giving rise to different frequencies and types of complications. Glans injury during ritual circumcision is a rare yet serious complication due to its associated morbidity and long-term consequences. In this study we describe the experience of two medical centers with the management and follow up of glans injury after ritual circumcision. We have retrospectively reviewed the medical files of all pediatric patients who presented to the ER with glans injury, following ritual circumcision, over a 17-year period from two medical centers. A total of 8 patients were identified, who underwent ritual circumcision between 7 and 9 days of age. On presentation, 1 infant had complete glans amputation, the others presented with partial amputation of the glans. 6 of the 8 patients had a simultaneous urethral injury. All patients underwent surgical correction for their injury; Patients with isolated glans injury, underwent primary glans anastomosis. Of the 6 cases with simultaneous urethral injury: 3 underwent end-to-end urethral anastomosis following anastomosis of the amputated glans, one patient with complete glans amputation underwent a similar procedure, with initial end-to-end urethral anastomosis followed by glans anastomosis to the corpora cavernosa and 2 were managed by urethrostomy together with anastomosis of the amputated glans tissue to the remaining glans. Both patients with urethral injury, in whom end to end urethral anastomosis has not been performed, were found to have hypospadias on follow up. The rest had good functional and cosmetic results. There is no single method for managing glans injury following circumcision. Some authors describe healing by secondary intention with delayed formal repair, while others advocate for primary anastomosis of the amputated glans, together with distal urethra-urethrostomy, in cases with simultaneous urethral injury. In this study, both patients without urethral anastomosis, developed secondary hypospadias due to meatal regression and required additional surgery, while the others showed good results. The limitations of our study are its retrospective nature and the small number of cases, preventing us to come to a definitive conclusion regarding the best way to treat such a rare injury. Abstract

Magnesium supplementation is often suggested for restless legs syndrome (RLS) or period limb movement disorder (PLMD) based on anecdotal evidence that it relieves symptoms and because it is also commonly recommended for leg cramps. We aimed to review all articles reporting the effects of magnesium supplementation on changes in RLS and/or PLMD. We conducted a systematic search looking for all relevant articles and then two reviewers read all article titles and abstracts to identify relevant studies. Eligible studies were scored for their quality as interventional trials. We found 855 abstracts and 16 of these could not be definitively excluded for not addressing all aspects of our research question. Seven full-text articles were unlocatable and one was ineligible which left eight studies with relevant data. One was a randomised placebo-controlled trial, three were case series and four were case studies. The RCT did not find a significant treatment effect of magnesium but may have been underpowered. After quality appraisal and synthesis of the evidence we were unable to make a conclusion as to the effectiveness of magnesium for RLS/PLMD. Abstract

Auger electron spectroscopy analysis was performed on GaSb and Si semiconductor surfaces rinsed by deionized water or by tap water. The surface contaminations deduced from these analyses were correlated to the results of chemical and bacteriological tests of deionized tap water and it was found that the development of micro-organisms in the water-line was responsible for a carbon contamination of the samples rinsed by deionized water.

Abstract

The following notes have been drawn up from a study of specimens which were collected by G. F. Scott Elliot, Esq., during the earlier of two recent expeditions in Africa. He followed the Nile to somewhat beyond the second cataract, and brought back more than 130 examples of various rocks. The collection was sent to University College for examination, which I was allowed to undertake by the kindness of Professor Bonney, to whom I am further indebted for much help and advice on points of difficulty. A detailed description has been furnished to Mr. Scott Elliot to be included in the account of his journey, which it is to be hoped will be published before long. It may, however, be useful to have a short summary of the chief points of geological interest for general reference in an easily accessible publication.

50. VI.?Devonian Greenstones and Chlorite Schists of South Devon

Abstract

In a paper published in the Devonshire Transactions for 1888 (p. 215), Mr. Somervail suggests the identity of the chlorite schists of South Devon with certain rocks to the northward. As this hypothesis (could it be established) would have a most important bearing on subjects of controversy, I took the opportunity in a few days this winter, to visit and collect from these localities, including the dyke nearest to Toreross. I was not rewarded by finding any striking similarity to the metamorphic rocks of the south. In that series, the chlorite schists consist of clear and definite crystalline grains, among which I find felspar to be rare and have not yet certainly identified augite?while these northern greenstones are full of broken crystals of both minerals, together with viridite, dust resulting from the crushing, and a small amount of minute secondary hornblende and sericite (?), chlorite being generally rare, and often absent.
