Abstract Hunting stability is an important performance criterion in railway vehicles. This study proposes an incorporation of a bio-inspired limb-like structure (LLS)-based nonlinear damping into the motor suspension system for traction units to improve the nonlinear critical speed and hunting stability of high-speed trains (HSTs). Initially, a vibration transmission analysis is conducted on a HST vehicle and a metro vehicle that suffered from hunting motion to explore the effect of different motor suspension systems from on-track tests. Subsequently, a simplified lateral dynamics model of an HST bogie is established to investigate the influence of the motor suspension on the bogie hunting behavior. The bifurcation analysis is applied to optimize the motor suspension parameters for high critical speed. Then, the nonlinear damping of the bio-inspired LLS, which has a positive correlation with the relative displacement, can further improve the modal damping of hunting motion and nonlinear critical speed compared with the linear motor suspension system. Furthermore, a comprehensive numerical model of a high-speed train, considering all nonlinearities, is established to investigate the influence of different types of motor suspension. The simulation results are well consistent with the theoretical analysis. The benefits of employing nonlinear damping of the bio-inspired LLS into the motor suspension of HSTs to enhance bogie hunting stability are thoroughly validated.

Abstract Segregated incompressible large eddy simulation and acoustic perturbation equations were used to obtain the flow field and sound field of 1:25 scale trains with three, six and eight coaches in a long tunnel, and the aerodynamic results were verified by wind tunnel test with the same scale two-coach train model. Time-averaged drag coefficients of the head coach of three trains are similar, but at the tail coach of the multi-group trains it is much larger than that of the three-coach train. The eight-coach train presents the largest increment from the head coach to the tail coach in the standard deviation (STD) of aerodynamic force coefficients: 0.0110 for drag coefficient (C d), 0.0198 for lift coefficient (C l) and 0.0371 for side coefficient (C s). Total sound pressure level at the bottom of multi-group trains presents a significant streamwise increase, which is different from the three-coach train. Tunnel walls affect the acoustic distribution at the bottom, only after the coach number reaches a certain value, and the streamwise increase in the sound pressure fluctuation of multi-group trains is strengthened by coach number. Fourier transform of the turbulent and sound pressures presents that coach number has little influence on the peak frequencies, but increases the sound pressure level values at the tail bogie cavities. Furthermore, different from the turbulent pressure, the first two sound pressure proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) modes in the bogie cavities contain 90% of the total energy, and the spatial distributions indicate that the acoustic distributions in the head and tail bogies are not related to coach number.

Abstract Excavating super-large-span tunnels in soft rock masses presents significant challenges. To ensure safety, the sequential excavation method is commonly adopted. It utilizes internal temporary supports to spatially partition the tunnel face and divide the excavation into multiple stages. However, these internal supports generally impose spatial constraints, limiting the use of large-scale excavation equipment and reducing construction efficiency. To address this constraint, this study adopts the “Shed-frame” principle to explore the feasibility of an innovative support system, which aims to replace internal supports with prestressed anchor cables and thus provide a more spacious working space with fewer internal obstructions. To evaluate its effectiveness, a field case involving the excavation of a 24-m span tunnel in soft rock is presented, and an analysis of extensive field data is conducted to study the deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock and the mechanical behavior of the support system. The results revealed that prestressed anchor cables integrated the initial support with the shed, creating an effective “shed-frame” system, which successively maintained tunnel deformation and frame stress levels within safe regulatory bounds. Moreover, the prestressed anchor cables bolstered the surrounding rock effectively and reduced the excavation-induced disturbance zone significantly. In summary, the proposed support system balances construction efficiency and safety. These field experiences may offer valuable insights into the popularization and further development of prestressed anchor cable support systems.

Abstract Laying the under-sleeper pad (USP) is one of the effective measures commonly used to delay ballast degradation and reduce maintenance workload. To explore the impact of application of the USP on the dynamic and static mechanical behavior of the ballast track in the heavy-haul railway system, numerical simulation models of the ballast bed with USP and without USP are presented in this paper by using the discrete element method (DEM)—multi-flexible body dynamic (MFBD) coupling analysis method. The ballast bed support stiffness test and dynamic displacement tests were carried out on the actual operation of a heavy-haul railway line to verify the validity of the models. The results show that using the USP results in a 43.01% reduction in the ballast bed support stiffness and achieves a more uniform distribution of track loads on the sleepers. It effectively reduces the load borne by the sleeper directly under the wheel load, with a 7.89% reduction in the pressure on the sleeper. Furthermore, the laying of the USP changes the lateral resistance sharing ratio of the ballast bed, significantly reducing the stress level of the ballast bed under train loads, with an average stress reduction of 42.19 kPa. It also reduces the plastic displacement of ballast particles and lowers the peak value of rotational angular velocity by about 50% to 70%, which is conducive to slowing down ballast bed settlement deformation and reducing maintenance costs. In summary, laying the USP has a potential value in enhancing the stability and extending the lifespan of the ballast bed in heavy-haul railway systems.

Abstract Railway infrastructure relies on the dynamic interaction between wheels and rails; thus, assessing wheel wear is a critical aspect of maintenance and safety. This paper focuses on the wheel–rail wear indicator T-gamma (Tγ). Amidst its use, it becomes apparent that Tγ, while valuable, fails to provide a comprehensive reflection of the actual material removal and actual contact format, which means that using only Tγ as a target for optimization of profiles is not ideal. In this work, three different freight wagons are evaluated: a meter-gauge and a broad-gauge heavy haul vehicles from South American railways, and a standard-gauge freight vehicle operated in Europe, with different axle loads and dissimilar new wheel/rail profiles. These vehicles are subjected to comprehensive multibody simulations on various tracks. The simulations aimed to elucidate the intricate relationship between different wear indicators: Tγ, wear index, material removal, and maximum wear depth, under diverse curves, non-compensated lateral accelerations (A nc), and speeds. Some findings showed a correlation of 0.96 between Tγ and wear depth and 0.82 between wear index and material removed for the outer wheel. From the results, the Tγ is better than the wear index to be used when analyzing wear depth while the wear index is more suited to foresee the material lost. The results also show the low influence of A nc on wear index and Tγ. By considering these factors together, the study aims to improve the understanding of wheel–rail wear by selecting the best wear analysis approaches based on the effectiveness of each parameter.

Abstract The cross-level and twist irregularities are the most dangerous irregularity types that could cause wheel unloading with the risk of derailments and additional maintenance expenses. However, the mechanism of the irregularities initiation and development is unclear. The motivation of the present study was the previous experimental studies on the application of wide sleepers in the ballasted track. The long-term track geometry measurements with wide sleepers show an enormous reduction of the vertical longitudinal irregularities compared to the conventional track. However, wide sleepers had higher twist and cross-section level irregularities. The present paper aims to explain the phenomenon by discrete element method (DEM) modeling the development process of sleeper inhomogeneous support at cross-level depending on the sleeper form. The DEM simulations show that the maximal settlement intensity is up to 3.5 times lower for a wide sleeper in comparison with the conventional one. Nevertheless, the cross-level differential settlements are almost the same for both sleepers. The particle loading distribution after all loading cycles is concentrated on the smaller area, up to the half sleeper length, with fully unloaded zones under sleeper ends. Ballast flow limitation under the central part of the sleeper could improve the resilience of wide sleepers to the development of cross-level irregularities. The mechanism of initiation of the cross-level irregularity is proposed, which assumes the loss of sleeper support under sleeper ends. The further growth of inhomogeneous settlements along the sleeper is assumed as a result of the interaction of two processes: ballast flow due to dynamic impact during void closing and on the other side high pressure due to the concentration of the pressure under the middle part of the sleeper. The DEM simulation results support the assumption of the mechanism and agree with the experimental studies.

Abstract Acoustic models of railway vehicles in standstill and pass-by conditions can be used as part of a virtual certification process for new trains. For each piece of auxiliary equipment, the sound power measured on a test bench is combined with measured or predicted transfer functions. It is important, however, to allow for installation effects due to shielding by fairings or the train body. In the current work, fast-running analytical models are developed to determine these installation effects. The model for roof-mounted sources takes account of diffraction at the corner of the train body or fairing, using a barrier model. For equipment mounted under the train, the acoustic propagation from the sides of the source is based on free-field Green’s functions. The bottom surfaces are assumed to radiate initially into a cavity under the train, which is modelled with a simple diffuse field approach. The sound emitted from the gaps at the side of the cavity is then assumed to propagate to the receivers according to free-field Green’s functions. Results show good agreement with a 2.5D boundary element model and with measurements. Modelling uncertainty and parametric uncertainty are evaluated. The largest variability occurs due to the height and impedance of the ground, especially for a low receiver. This leads to standard deviations of up to 4 dB at low frequencies. For the roof-mounted sources, uncertainty over the location of the corner used in the equivalent barrier model can also lead to large standard deviations.

Abstract Short pitch corrugation has been a problem for railways worldwide over one century. In this paper, a parametric investigation of fastenings is conducted to understand the corrugation formation mechanism and gain insights into corrugation mitigation. A three-dimensional finite element vehicle–track dynamic interaction model is employed, which considers the coupling between the structural dynamics and the contact mechanics, while the damage mechanism is assumed to be differential wear. Various fastening models with different configurations, boundary conditions, and parameters of stiffness and damping are built up and analysed. These models may represent different service stages of fastenings in the field. Besides, the effect of train speeds on corrugation features is studied. The results indicate: (1) Fastening parameters and modelling play an important role in corrugation formation. (2) The fastening longitudinal constraint to the rail is the major factor that determines the corrugation formation. The fastening vertical and lateral constraints influence corrugation features in terms of spatial distribution and wavelength components. (3) The strengthening of fastening constraints in the longitudinal dimension helps to mitigate corrugation. Meanwhile, the inner fastening constraint in the lateral direction is necessary for corrugation alleviation. (4) The increase in fastening longitudinal stiffness and damping can reduce the vibration amplitudes of longitudinal compression modes and thus reduce the track corrugation propensity. The simulation in this work can well explain the field corrugation in terms of the occurrence possibility and major wavelength components. It can also explain the field data with respect to the small variation between the corrugation wavelength and train speed, which is caused by frequency selection and jump between rail longitudinal compression modes.

Abstract In this article, we consider the numerical prediction of the noise emission from a wheelset in laboratory conditions. We focus on the fluid–structure interaction leading to sound emission in the fluid domain by analyzing three different methods to account for acoustic sources. These are a discretized baffled piston using the discrete calculation method (DCM), a closed cylindrical volume using the boundary element method (BEM) and radiating elastic disks in a cubic enclosure solved with the finite element method (FEM). We provide the validation of the baffled piston and the BEM using measurements of the noise emission of a railway wheel by considering ground reflections in the numerical models. Selected space-resolved waveforms are compared with experimental results as well as with a fluid–structure interaction finite element model. The computational advantage of a discretized disk mounted on a baffle and BEM compared to FEM is highlighted, and the baffled pistons limitations caused by a lack of edge radiation effects are investigated.

Abstract High-speed railway bridges are subjected to normative limitations concerning maximum permissible deck accelerations. For the design of these structures, the European norm EN 1991-2 introduces the high-speed load model (HSLM)—a set of point loads intended to include the effects of existing high-speed trains. Yet, the evolution of current trains and the recent development of new load models motivate a discussion regarding the limits of validity of the HSLM. For this study, a large number of randomly generated load models of articulated, conventional, and regular trains are tested and compared with the envelope of HSLM effects. For each type of train, two sets of 100,000 load models are considered: one abiding by the limits of the EN 1991-2 and another considering wider limits. This comparison is achieved using both a bridge-independent metric (train signatures) and dynamic analyses on a case study bridge (the Canelas bridge of the Portuguese Railway Network). For the latter, a methodology to decrease the computational cost of moving loads analysis is introduced. Results show that some theoretical load models constructed within the stipulated limits of the norm can lead to effects not covered by the HSLM. This is especially noted in conventional trains, where there is a relation with larger distances between centres of adjacent vehicle bogies.

Abstract The low-frequency oscillation (LFO) has occurred in the train–network system due to the introduction of the power electronics of the trains. The modeling and analyzing method in current researches based on electrified railway unilateral power supply system are not suitable for the LFO analysis in a bilateral power supply system, where the trains are supplied by two traction substations. In this work, based on the single-input and single-output impedance model of China CRH5 trains, the node admittance matrices of the train–network system both in unilateral and bilateral power supply modes are established, including three-phase power grid, traction transformers and traction network. Then the modal analysis is used to study the oscillation modes and propagation characteristics of the unilateral and bilateral power supply systems. Moreover, the influence of the equivalent inductance of the power grid, the length of the transmission line, and the length of the traction network are analyzed on the critical oscillation mode of the bilateral power supply system. Finally, the theoretical analysis results are verified by the time-domain simulation model in MATLAB/Simulink.

Abstract The reduction of energy consumption is an increasingly important topic of the railway system. Energy-efficient train control (EETC) is one solution, which refers to mathematically computing when to accelerate, which cruising speed to hold, how long one should coast over a suitable space, and when to brake. Most approaches in literature and industry greatly simplify a lot of nonlinear effects, such that they ignore mostly the losses due to energy conversion in traction components and auxiliaries. To fill this research gap, a series of increasingly detailed nonlinear losses is described and modelled. We categorize an increasing detail in this representation as four levels. We study the impact of those levels of detail on the energy optimal speed trajectory. To do this, a standard approach based on dynamic programming is used, given constraints on total travel time. This evaluation of multiple test cases highlights the influence of the dynamic losses and the power consumption of auxiliary components on railway trajectories, also compared to multiple benchmarks. The results show how the losses can make up 50% of the total energy consumption for an exemplary trip. Ignoring them would though result in consistent but limited errors in the optimal trajectory. Overall, more complex trajectories can result in less energy consumption when including the complexity of nonlinear losses than when a simpler model is considered. Those effects are stronger when the trajectory includes many acceleration and braking phases.

Abstract The main contribution of this paper is the development and demonstration of a novel methodology that can be followed to develop a simulation twin of a railway track switch system to test the functionality in a digital environment. This is important because, globally, railway track switches are used to allow trains to change routes; they are a key part of all railway networks. However, because track switches are single points of failure and safety-critical, their inability to operate correctly can cause significant delays and concomitant costs. In order to better understand the dynamic behaviour of switches during operation, this paper has developed a full simulation twin of a complete track switch system. The approach fuses finite element for the rail bending and motion, with physics-based models of the electromechanical actuator system and the control system. Hence, it provides researchers and engineers the opportunity to explore and understand the design space around the dynamic operation of new switches and switch machines before they are built. This is useful for looking at the modification or monitoring of existing switches, and it becomes even more important when new switch concepts are being considered and evaluated. The simulation is capable of running in real time or faster meaning designs can be iterated and checked interactively. The paper describes the modelling approach, demonstrates the methodology by developing the system model for a novel “REPOINT” switch system, and evaluates the system level performance against the dynamic performance requirements for the switch. In the context of that case study, it is found that the proposed new actuation system as designed can meet (and exceed) the system performance requirements, and that the fault tolerance built into the actuation ensures continued operation after a single actuator failure.

Abstract Investigations into the aerodynamic properties of vertical sound barriers exposed to high-speed operations employ computational fluid dynamics. The primary focus of this research is to evaluate the influence of train speed and the distance (D) from the track centerline under various operating conditions. The findings elucidate a marked elevation in the aerodynamic effect amplitude on sound barriers as train speeds increase. In single-train passages, the aerodynamic effect amplitude manifests a direct relationship with the square of the train speed. When two trains pass each other, the aerodynamic amplitude intensifies due to an additional aerodynamic increment on the sound barrier. This increment exhibits an approximate quadratic correlation with the retrograde train speed. Notably, the impact of high-speed trains on sound barrier aerodynamics surpasses that of low-speed trains, and this discrepancy amplifies with larger speed differentials between trains. Moreover, the train-induced aerodynamic effect diminishes significantly with greater distance (D), with occurrences of pressure coefficient (C P) exceeding the standard thresholds during dual-train passages. This study culminates in the formulation of universal equations for quantifying the influence of train speed and distance (D) on sound barrier aerodynamic characteristics across various operational scenarios.

Příspěvek řeší kinematickou vazbu průjezdu silničního vozidla zatáčkou. V textu je zpracována problematika kinematiky zatáčení u silničních vozidel, a to zejména jízdní soupravy. Za jízdní soupravu jsem zvolil nákladní tažné vozidlo a návěs. U konvenční jízdní soupravy při průjezdu zatáčkou dochází k odlišné stopě kol tažného vozidla a kol přípojného vozidla. Touto skutečností dochází ke zvětšení jízdní stopy (šířky jízdního pruhu). Jedná se o stav, který je velmi limitující při manipulaci s vozidlem v omezené prostoru, jako jsou městské ulice a silnice nižších tříd. Proto jsem se v příspěvku zabýval matematickou definici pro úhel natočení rejdových náprav návěsu. Výsledkem z příspěvku jsou odvozené kinematické vztahy, které definují dílčí úhly natočení náprav návěsu a to tak, aby právě tato kola kopírovala jízdní stopu tažného vozidla. Současně je teoretická stránka aplikována konkrétní případ tahače a návěsu. Tímto opatřením se výrazně zlepší manipulovatelnost s jízdní soupravou a velký přínos spatřuji i při autonomní jízdě soupravy. Kdy u přípojného vozidla je plně dostačující menší počet snímačů mapujících okolí vozidla při zachování vysokého stupně bezpečnosti.

This paper brings together two very topical and important themes. The first is the issue of the environmental footprint of transport consumption and the second is the current educational challenges of Generation Z representatives. The paper focuses on a combination of both topics, respectively addressing the education of Generation Z on the topic of the environmental footprint of transport consumption. The paper is prepared using a primary representative survey method based on an online questionnaire survey of representatives of Generation Z (secondary school students in the Czech Republic). The aim of the paper is to identify the educational challenges of the generation Z (studying at secondary schools in the Czech Republic) in the thematic area of the environmental footprint of transport consumption. The results clearly show the necessity of using audio-visual educational content and linking theory and practice, for example in the form of case studies. Generation Z wants quick, concise, up-to-date, interesting, and interactive information. Generation Z representatives clearly confirm the need to address human environmental impacts in education, adding that not enough time is devoted to them. They also confirm that there is a lack of study materials in this subject area and that they are not developed in a user-friendly way. Representatives of Generation Z are interested in further education on the environmental footprint of transport consumption. The findings of this paper can help both secondary school teachers, as well as school and curriculum developers and educational policy and strategy makers.

Železničná doprava je kontinuálny proces, ktorý musí byť koordinovaný na všetkých úrovniach riadenia a je determinovaný technologickými postupmi. Z technologického hľadiska je dôležité správne určiť praktickú priepustnosť traťového úseku, nazývanú aj kapacita železničnej infraštruktúry. To znamená, akou vlakovou dopravou možno zaťažiť traťový úsek tak, aby vykazoval dostatočnú stabilitu vlakovej dopravy aj pri prevádzkových nepravidelnostiach. Článok je zameraný na spôsob zvýšenia kapacity traťového úseku Drienovská Nová Ves - Kysak s využitím metódy stanovenia praktickej priepustnej výkonnosti vo výhľadovom grafikone. Podrobné stanovenie časov obsadenia úseku pri súčasnom stave a pri aplikácii jednotlivých návrhov nám poskytuje informácie o ďalších možnostiach modernizácie železničnej infraštruktúry v SR. Článok popisuje a hodnotí výhody a nevýhody jednotlivých návrhov na zvýšenie kapacity skúmaného traťového úseku. V rámci budúcej modernizácie železničnej infraštruktúry tohto traťového úseku je potrebné tieto opatrenia realizovať, nakoľko skúmaný traťový úsek je súčasťou RFC koridoru. Zámerom je nielen zvýšenie kvality železničnej infraštruktúry, ale aj kvality nákladnej a osobnej dopravy.

Článek se věnuje stanovení piktogramů na základě rozdělení nákladních vzducholodí dle nosného plynu a možnosti nakládky a vykládky nákladu. Nosný plyn je dělen na základní dva plyny, které jsou helium a vodík. Dalším rozdělením je přeprava nákladu uvnitř či vně trupu vzducholodi. Které je následně rozděluje dle možností nakládky a vykládky. Závěrem jsou přiřazeny piktogramy k jednotlivým výrobcům dle jejich deklarace jakožto příklad přiřazení.

Cast (real) damascus steel (so-called “wootz”) is an ancient tool/weapon material. Due to relatively high carbon amounts, the wootz is hard to forge (or other hot-forming shaping). In some cases, the forging of wootz is impossible. During forging, cracks are often created that lead to absolutely disintegration of bulk material. In this paper is given one relationship between wootz microstructure and the forging impossibility.

Abstract The compaction quality of subgrade filler strongly affects subgrade settlement. The main objective of this research is to analyze the macro- and micro-mechanical compaction characteristics of subgrade filler based on the real shape of coarse particles. First, an improved Viola–Jones algorithm is employed to establish a digitalized 2D particle database for coarse particle shape evaluation and discrete modeling purposes of subgrade filler. Shape indexes of 2D subgrade filler are then computed and statistically analyzed. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to quantitatively investigate the effects of the aspect ratio (AR) and interparticle friction coefficient (μ) on the macro- and micro-mechanical compaction characteristics of subgrade filler based on the discrete element method (DEM). The results show that with the increasing AR, the coarse particles are narrower, leading to the increasing movement of fine particles during compaction, which indicates that it is difficult for slender coarse particles to inhibit the migration of fine particles. Moreover, the average displacement of particles is strongly influenced by the AR, indicating that their occlusion under power relies on particle shapes. The displacement and velocity of fine particles are much greater than those of the coarse particles, which shows that compaction is primarily a migration of fine particles. Under the cyclic load, the interparticle friction coefficient μ has little effect on the internal structure of the sample; under the quasi-static loads, however, the increase in μ will lead to a significant increase in the porosity of the sample. This study could not only provide a novel approach to investigate the compaction mechanism but also establish a new theoretical basis for the evaluation of intelligent subgrade compaction.

Abstract The high-speed train transmission system, experiencing both the internal excitation originating from gear meshing and the external excitation originating from the wheel–rail interaction, exhibits complex dynamic behavior in the actual service environment. This paper focuses on the gearbox in the high-speed train to carry out the bench test, in which various operating conditions (torques and rotation speeds) were set up and the excitation condition covering both internal and external was created. Acceleration responses on multiple positions of the gearbox were acquired in the test and the vibration behavior of the gearbox was studied. Meanwhile, a stochastic excitation modal test was also carried out on the test bench under different torques, and the modal parameter of the gearbox was identified. Finally, the sweep frequency response of the gearbox under gear meshing excitation was analyzed through dynamic modeling. The results showed that the torque has an attenuating effect on the amplitude of gear meshing frequency on the gearbox, and the effect of external excitation on the gearbox vibration cannot be ignored, especially under the rated operating condition. It was also found that the torque affects the modal parameter of the gearbox significantly. The torque has a great effect on both the gear meshing stiffness and the bearing stiffness in the transmission system, which is the inherent reason for the changed modal characteristics observed in the modal test and affects the vibration behavior of the gearbox consequently.

Abstract Traction power systems (TPSs) play a vital role in the operation of electrified railways. The transformation of conventional railway TPSs to novel structures is not only a trend to promote the development of electrified railways toward high-efficiency and resilience but also an inevitable requirement to achieve carbon neutrality target. On the basis of sorting out the power supply structures of conventional AC and DC modes, this paper first reviews the characteristics of the existing TPSs, such as weak power supply flexibility and low-energy efficiency. Furthermore, the power supply structures of various TPSs for future electrified railways are described in detail, which satisfy longer distance, low-carbon, high-efficiency, high-reliability and high-quality power supply requirements. Meanwhile, the application prospects of different traction modes are discussed from both technical and economic aspects. Eventually, this paper introduces the research progress of mixed-system electrified railways and traction power supply technologies without catenary system, speculates on the future development trends and challenges of TPSs and predicts that TPSs will be based on the continuous power supply mode, employing power electronic equipment and intelligent information technology to construct a railway comprehensive energy system with renewable energy.

Abstract The meso-dynamical behaviour of a high-speed rail ballast bed with under sleeper pads (USPs) was studied. The geometrically irregular refined discrete element model of the ballast particles was constructed using 3D scanning techniques, and the 3D dynamic model of the rail–sleeper–ballast bed was constructed using the coupled discrete element method–multi-flexible-body dynamics (DEM–MFBD) approach. We analyse the meso-mechanical dynamics of the ballast bed with USPs under dynamic load on a train and verify the correctness of the model in laboratory tests. It is shown that the deformation of the USPs increases the contact area between the sleeper and the ballast particles, and subsequently the number of contacts between them. As the depth of the granular ballast bed increases, the contact area becomes larger, and the contact force between the ballast particles gradually decreases. Under the action of the elastic USPs, the contact forces between ballast particles are reduced and the overall vibration level of the ballast bed can be reduced. The settlement of the granular ballast bed occurs mainly at the shallow position of the sleeper bottom, and the installation of the elastic USPs can be effective in reducing the stress on the ballast particles and the settlement of the ballast bed.

Abstract Appropriate interaction between pantograph and catenary is imperative for smooth operation of electric trains. Changing heights of overhead lines to accommodate level crossings, overbridges, and tunnels pose significant challenges in maintaining consistent current collection performance as the pantograph aerodynamic profile, and thus aerodynamic load changes significantly with operational height. This research aims to analyse the global flow characteristics and aerodynamic forces acting on individual components of an HSX pantograph operating in different configurations and orientations, such that the results can be combined with multibody simulations to obtain accurate dynamic insight into contact forces. Specifically, computational fluid dynamics simulations are used to investigate the pantograph component loads in a representative setting, such as that of the recessed cavity on a Class 800 train. From an aerodynamic perspective, this study indicates that the total drag force acting on non-fixed components of the pantograph is larger for the knuckle-leading orientation rather than the knuckle-trailing, although the difference between the two is found to reduce with increasing pantograph extension. Combining the aerodynamic loads acting on individual components with multibody tools allows for realistic dynamic insight into the pantograph behaviour. The results obtained show how considering aerodynamic forces enhance the realism of the models, leading to behaviour of the pantograph–catenary contact forces closely matching that seen in experimental tests.

Abstract The high and steep slopes along a high-speed railway in the mountainous area of Southwest China are mostly composed of loose accumulations of debris with large internal pores and poor stability, which can easily induce adverse geological disasters under rainfall conditions. To ensure the smooth construction of the high-speed railway and the subsequent safe operation, it is necessary to master the stability evolution process of the loose accumulation slope under rainfall. This article simulates rainfall using the finite element analysis software’s hydromechanical coupling module. The slope stability under various rainfall situations is calculated and analysed based on the strength reduction method. To validate the simulation results, a field monitoring system is established to study the deformation characteristics of the slope under rainfall. The results show that rainfall duration is the key factor affecting slope stability. Given a constant amount of rainfall, the stability of the slope decreases with increasing duration of rainfall. Moreover, when the amount and duration of rainfall are constant, continuous rainfall has a greater impact on slope stability than intermittent rainfall. The setting of the field retaining structures has a significant role in improving slope stability. The field monitoring data show that the slope is in the initial deformation stage and has good stability, which verifies the rationality of the numerical simulation method. The research results can provide some references for understanding the influence of rainfall on the stability of loose accumulation slopes along high-speed railways and establishing a monitoring system.

Abstract Concrete slabs are widely used in modern railways to increase the inherent resilient quality of the tracks, provide safe and smooth rides, and reduce the maintenance frequency. In this paper, the elastic performance of a novel slab trackform for high-speed railways is investigated using three-dimensional finite element modelling in Abaqus. It is then compared to the performance of a ballasted track. First, slab and ballasted track models are developed to replicate the full-scale testing of track sections. Once the models are calibrated with the experimental results, the novel slab model is developed and compared against the calibrated slab track results. The slab and ballasted track models are then extended to create linear dynamic models, considering the track geodynamics, and simulating train passages at various speeds, for which the Ledsgård documented case was used to validate the models. Trains travelling at low and high speeds are analysed to investigate the track deflections and the wave propagation in the soil, considering the issues associated with critical speeds. Various train loading methods are discussed, and the most practical approach is retained and described. Moreover, correlations are made between the geotechnical parameters of modern high-speed rail and conventional standards. It is found that considering the same ground condition, the slab track deflections are considerably smaller than those of the ballasted track at high speeds, while they show similar behaviour at low speeds.

Abstract Dynamic wheel–rail contact forces induced by a severe form of wheel tread damage have been measured by a wheel impact load detector during full-scale field tests at different vehicle speeds. Based on laser scanning, the measured three-dimensional damage geometry is employed in simulations of dynamic vehicle–track interaction to calibrate and verify a simulation model. The relation between the magnitude of the impact load and various operational parameters, such as vehicle speed, lateral position of wheel–rail contact, track stiffness and position of impact within a sleeper bay, is investigated. The calibrated model is later employed in simulations featuring other forms of tread damage; their effects on impact load and subsequent fatigue impact on bearings, wheel webs and subsurface initiated rolling contact fatigue of the wheel tread are assessed. The results quantify the effects of wheel tread defects and are valuable in a shift towards condition-based maintenance of running gear, and for general assessment of the severity of different types of railway wheel tread damage.

Abstract The ballastless track is nowadays the most popular railway system due to the required low number of maintenance operations and costs, despite the high investment. The gradual change from ballasted to ballastless tracks has been occurring in Asia, but also in Europe, increasing the number of transition zones. The transition zones are a special area of the railway networks where there is an accelerated process of track degradation, which is a major concern of the railway infrastructure managers. Thus, the accurate prediction of the short- and long-term performance of ballastless tracks in transition zones is an important topic in the current paradigm of building/rehabilitating high-speed lines. This work purposes the development of an advanced 3D model to study the global performance of a ballastless track in an embankment–tunnel transition zone considering the influence of the train speed (220, 360, 500, and 600 km/h). Moreover, a mitigation measure is also adopted to reduce the stress and displacements levels of the track in the transition. A resilient mat placed in the tunnel and embankment aims to soften the transition. The behaviour of the track with the resilient mat is evaluated considering the influence of the train speed, with special attention regarding the critical speed. The used methodology is a novel and hybrid approach that allows including short-term and long-term performance, through the development of a powerful 3D model combined with the implementation of a calibrated empirical permanent deformation model.

Abstract The CRTS II slab track, which is connected in a longitudinal direction, is one of the main ballastless tracks in China, with approximately 7365 km of operational track. Temperature loading is a very vital factor leading to slab track damages such as warping and cracking. While existing research on temperature distribution rests on either site tests in special environments or theoretical analysis, the long-term temperature field characteristics are not clear. Therefore, a long-term temperature field test for the CRTS II slab track on bridge-subgrade transition section was conducted to analyze the temperature field. A GA-BP (genetic algorithm optimized back propagation) neural network was trained on the test data to predict the temperature field. The vertical and lateral temperature distributions in four typical days were carried out. We found that the temperature along the track was distributed in a nonlinear manner. This was particularly distinct in the vertical direction for depths of less than 300 mm. The highest and lowest daily temperatures and the daily range of the temperature were analyzed. With the increasing depth, the daily highest temperatures and range of the temperature were smaller, the daily lowest temperatures were higher, and the time corresponding to this peak value appeared later in the day. Both the highest and lowest daily temperature could be predicted using the GA-BP neural network, though the accuracy in predicting the highest temperature was higher than that in predicting the lowest temperature.

Abstract Rolling stock manufacturers are finding structural solutions to reduce power required by the vehicles, and the lightweight design of the car body represents a possible solution. Optimization processes and innovative materials can be combined in order to achieve this goal. In this framework, we propose the redesign and optimization process of the car body roof for a light rail vehicle, introducing a sandwich structure. Bonded joint was used as a fastening system. The project was carried out on a single car of a modern tram platform. This preliminary numerical work was developed in two main steps: redesign of the car body structure and optimization of the innovated system. Objective of the process was the mass reduction of the whole metallic structure, while the constraint condition was imposed on the first frequency of vibration of the system. The effect of introducing a sandwich panel within the roof assembly was evaluated, focusing on the mechanical and dynamic performances of the whole car body. A mass saving of 63% on the optimized components was achieved, corresponding to a 7.6% if compared to the complete car body shell. In addition, a positive increasing of 17.7% on the first frequency of vibration was observed. Encouraging results have been achieved in terms of weight reduction and mechanical behaviour of the innovated car body.

Abstract Railway accidents, particularly serious derailments, can lead to catastrophic consequences. Therefore, it is essential to prevent derailment escalation to reduce the likelihood of severe derailments. Train post-derailment behaviours and containment methods play a critical role in preventing derailment escalation and providing passive safety protection and accident prevention in the event of a derailment. However, despite the increasing attention on this field from academia and industry in recent years, there is a lack of systematic exploration and summarization of emerging applications and containment methods in train post-derailment research. For this reason, this paper presents a comprehensive review of existing studies on train post-derailment behaviours, encompassing various topics such as post-derailment contact–impact models, dynamic modelling and simulation techniques, and the primary factors influencing post-derailment behaviours. Significantly, this review introduces and elucidates substitute guidance mechanisms (SGMs), which serve as railway-specific passive safety protection and accident prevention measures. The various types of SGMs are depicted, and their ongoing developments and applications are explored in depth. The review additionally points out several unresolved challenges including the adverse effects of SGMs, and proposes future research directions to advance the theoretical understanding and practical application of train post-derailment behaviours and containment methods. This review seeks to be a valuable reference for railway industry professionals in preventing catastrophic derailment consequences through post-derailment containment methods.

Abstract Train timetables and operations are defined by the train running time in sections, dwell time at stations, and headways between trains. Accurate estimation of these factors is essential to decision-making for train delay reduction, train dispatching, and station capacity estimation. In the present study, we aim to propose a train dwell time model based on an averaging mechanism and dynamic updating to address the challenges in the train dwell time prediction problem (e.g., dynamics over time, heavy-tailed distribution of data, and spatiotemporal relationships of factors) for real-time train dispatching. The averaging mechanism in the present study is based on multiple state-of-the-art base predictors, enabling the proposed model to integrate the advantages of the base predictors in addressing the challenges in terms of data attributes and data distributions. Then, considering the influence of passenger flow on train dwell time, we use a dynamic updating method based on exponential smoothing to improve the performance of the proposed method by considering the real-time passenger amount fluctuations (e.g., passenger soars in peak hours or passenger plunges during regular periods). We conduct experiments with the train operation data and passenger flow data from the Chinese high-speed railway line. The results show that due to the advantages over the base predictors, the averaging mechanism can more accurately predict the dwell time at stations than its counterparts for different prediction horizons regarding predictive errors and variances. Further, the experimental results show that dynamic smoothing can significantly improve the accuracy of the proposed model during passenger amount changes, i.e., 15.4% and 15.5% corresponding to the mean absolute error and root mean square error, respectively. Based on the proposed predictor, a feature importance analysis shows that the planned dwell time and arrival delay are the two most important factors to dwell time. However, planned time has positive influences, whereas arrival delay has negative influences.

Abstract Rail vehicles generate huge longitudinal impact loads in collisions. If unreasonable matching exists between the compressive strength of the intermediate coupler and the structural strength of the car body, the risk of car body structure damage and train derailment will increase. Herein, a four-stage rigid–flexible coupling finite element model of the coupler is established considering the coupler buckling load. The influence of the coupler buckling load on the train longitudinal–vertical–horizontal buckling behavior was studied, and the mechanism of the train horizontal buckling instability in train collisions was revealed. Analysis results show that an intermediate coupler should be designed to ensure that the actual buckling load is less than the compressive load when the car body structure begins to deform plastically. The actual buckling load of the coupler and the asymmetry of the structural strength of the car body in the lateral direction are two important influencing factors for the lateral buckling of a train collision. If the strength of the two sides of the car body structure in the lateral direction is asymmetrical, the deformation on the weaker side will be larger, and the end of the car body will begin to deflect under the action of the coupler force, which in turn causes the train to undergo sawtooth buckling.

Abstract Cyclic load is widely adopted in laboratory to simulate the effect of train load on ballast bed. The effectiveness of such load equivalence is usually testified by having similar results of key concerns of ballast bed, such as deformation or stiffness, while the consistency of particle scale characteristics under two loading patterns is rarely examined, which is insufficient to well-understand and use the load simplification. In this study, a previous laboratory model test of ballast bed under cyclic load is rebuilt using 3D discrete element method (DEM), which is validated by dynamic responses monitored by high-resolution sensors. Then, train load having the same magnitude and amplitude as the cyclic load is applied in the numerical model to obtain the statistical characteristics of inter-particle contact force and particle movements in ballast bed. The results show that particle scale responses under two loading patterns could have quite deviation, even when macro-scale responses of ballast bed under two loading patterns are very close. This inconsistency indicates that the application scale of the DEM model should not exceed the validation scale. Moreover, it is important to examine multiscale responses to validate the effectiveness of load simplification.

Abstract The harmonics and resonance of traction power supply systems (TPSSs) aggravate the electromagnetic interference (EMI) to adjacent metallic pipelines (MPs), which has aroused widespread concern. In this paper, an evaluation method on pipeline interference voltage under harmonic induction is presented. The results show that the Carson integral formula is more accurate in calculating the mutual impedance at higher frequencies. Then, an integrated train–network–pipeline model is established to estimate the influences of harmonic distortion and resonance on an MP. It is revealed that the higher the harmonic current distortion rate of the traction load, the larger the interference voltage on an MP. Particularly, the interference voltage is amplified up to 7 times when the TPSS resonates, which is worthy of attention. In addition, the parameters that affect the variation and sensitivity of the interference voltage are studied, namely, the pipeline coating material, locomotive position, and soil resistivity, indicating that soil resistivity and 3PE (3-layer polyethylene) anticorrosive coating are more sensitive to harmonic induction. Field test results show that the harmonic distortion can make the interference voltage more serious, and the protective measures are optimized.

Abstract An enhancement in the wheel–rail contact model used in a nonlinear vehicle–structure interaction (VSI) methodology for railway applications is presented, in which the detection of the contact points between wheel and rail in the concave region of the thread–flange transition is implemented in a simplified way. After presenting the enhanced formulation, the model is validated with two numerical applications (namely, the Manchester Benchmarks and a hunting stability problem of a suspended wheelset), and one experimental test performed in a test rig from the Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) in Japan. Given its finite element (FE) nature, and contrary to most of the vehicle multibody dynamic commercial software that cannot account for the infrastructure flexibility, the proposed VSI model can be easily used in the study of train–bridge systems with any degree of complexity. The validation presented in this work proves the accuracy of the proposed model, making it a suitable tool for dealing with different railway dynamic applications, such as the study of bridge dynamics, train running safety under different scenarios (namely, earthquakes and crosswinds, among others), and passenger riding comfort.

Abstract The prediction of wheel/rail rolling contact fatigue (RCF) crack initiation during railway operations is an important task. Since RCF crack evolution is influenced by many factors, its prediction process is complex. This paper reviews the existing approaches to predict RCF crack initiation. The crack initiation region is predicted by the shakedown map. By combining the shakedown map with various initiation criteria and the critical plane method, the crack initiation life is calculated. The classification, methodologies, theories and applications of these approaches are included in this paper. The advantages and limitations of these methods are analyzed to provide recommendation for RCF crack initiation prediction. This review highlights that wheel/rail dynamic characteristic, complex working conditions, surface defects and wear all affect the RCF crack initiation. The optimal selection of criteria is essential in the crack initiation prediction. Based on the research gap regarding the challenging process of crack initiation prediction detailed in this review, a proposed prediction process of RCF crack initiation is proposed to achieve a more accurate result.

The pharmaceutical industry's profitability has attracted attention, but it faces challenges from counterfeiters exploiting vulnerabilities worsened by globalization and complex supply chains. In 2019, European authorities introduced regulation EU 2016/161 to enhance drug supply chain security and traceability. By conducting a systematic literature review, this study assesses the effectiveness of the European Drug Serialization system, examining its implementation and the potential benefits of integrating digital technologies like RFID and Blockchain. The aim is to investigate and identify measures contributing to the strengthening of pharmaceutical supply chains against counterfeiting. The research suggests that while serialization is crucial, it may not provide foolproof security, emphasizing the need for additional digital technology integration.

This paper focuses on cycling transport in the capital city of the Czech Republic – Prague. Main goal of the paper is to find out whether available measures for cycling transport support are taken there. The authors focus on the infrastructure dedicated for cyclists in Prague and they primarily focus on the safety of the users. Potentially dangerous and/or not comfortable examples are included as well.

Městská letecká mobilita (UAM) je nově vznikající koncept letecké dopravy, ve kterém drony přepravují cestující nebo náklad v hustě obydlených oblastech. UAM umožňuje výrazné zkrácení cestovních časů a obchází dopravní zácpy tím, že umožňuje leteckou dopravu z jednoho místa na druhé v rámci urbanizovaných oblastí. Než však bude možné UAM implementovat, je třeba vyřešit několik problémů, včetně technických problémů. Společenská akceptace a vytvoření životaschopného obchodního modelu jsou také pro rozvoj UAM důležité. Průzkum popsaný v tomto příspěvku má za cíl identifikovat profil potenciálního uživatele UAM. Výsledky naznačují poměrně vysokou ochotu přijmout UAM, přičemž přibližně 77 % respondentů projevilo zájem, zejména pokud by cesta UAM začala z jejich rezidenční oblasti. Logistická regresní analýza odhalila, že pohlaví, vzdělání, zaměstnanecký status, vzorce používání vozidel, frekvence cestování letadlem a motivační faktory, jako je využití cestovního času a rychlost cestování, významně ovlivnily pravděpodobnost použití UAM. Tato zjištění přispívají k pochopení potenciálního uživatelského profilu UAM.

Tento přehledový článek se zabývá provozem a údržbou železničních vozidel v kontextu technických specifikací pro interoperabilitu (TSI). Pozornost je věnována zejména novému systému schvalování vozidel a rozšíření systému údržby subjektem zodpovědným za údržbu (ECM) i mimo oblast nákladních vozů, resp. obecně novinkám, které v dané oblasti zavádí tzv. technický pilíř 4. železničního balíčku.

Přestože hospodářský vývoj České republiky v uplynulé dekádě lze hodnotit jako vcelku pozitivní, vývoj výkonnosti tuzemských silničních nákladních dopravců vykázal v tomto období razantní pokles. Evropská silniční kamionová doprava však byla nucena řešit celou řadu problémů, které na tuzemské dopravce dopadly velmi citelně. Předložená práce si klade za cíl nalézt a určit příčiny tohoto vývoje a poukázat na některé faktory, které nepříznivý vývoj pomohly zvrátit.

The presented paper deals with the structural design of a workbench with adjustable height, which will serve as part of the equipment of a light commercial vehicle for the needs of a service technician. The main objective of this paper is to create a functional design and 3D CAD model of a workbench that will meet the requirements of safety, mobility, and simple utilisation. Moreover, the design needs to consider the requirements of adjustable height and the dimensions of the work vehicle. The lifting mechanism is represented by arms fitted with sleeves that move along a lead trapezoidal screw rotating by a hand crank. In this paper, the force action in the axis of the threaded rod of the lifting mechanism is scrutinised in two extreme positions (highest and lowest position). The highest axial load on the threaded rod was found to be 9927.13 N in the lowest position of the mechanism. On the basis of this load, a right and left-hand trapezoidal threaded rod TR16×4 is selected, which satisfied the strength condition. The design of the sleeve height and the number of sleeve threads required are essential for safe utilisation. Due to the dimension of the guide rod, the height of the sleeve is selected to be 40 millimetres. The work surface is an important part of the workbench and consists of two parts. The chief larger part is made of medium density fibreboard and the smaller modular part can be in the two modular forms. The first version is the medium density fibreboard, and second alternative is a board designed to fix the components during their maintenance, repair as well as for welding.

Oblast řízení železničního provozu se v posledních letech těší vzrůstajícímu zájmu odborné veřejnosti. Důkazem je nejedena odborná publikace z let minulých, ale také zvýšený zájem o informace týkající se podstaty metod dálkového řízení železniční dopravy prostřednictvím Centrálních dispečerských pracovišť. Cílem tohoto příspěvku je poskytnout přehled vybraných vědeckých publikací z této oblasti za několik posledních let. Za tímto účelem byly použity především články z Web of Science (WoS) z let 2020 až 2023. Autor se v článku zabývá možností aplikace vybraných metod řízení při narušeném železničním provozu v prostředí České republiky.

Abstract To investigate the dynamic characteristics and long-term dynamic stability of the new subgrade structure of medium–low-speed (MLS) maglevs, cyclic vibration tests were performed under natural and rainfall conditions, and the dynamic response of the subgrade structure was monitored. The dynamic response attenuation characteristics along the depth direction of the subgrade were compared, and the distribution characteristics of the dynamic stress on the surface of the subgrade along the longitudinal direction of the line were analyzed. The critical dynamic stress and cumulative deformation were used as indicators to evaluate the long-term dynamic stability of the subgrade. Results show that water has a certain effect on the dynamic characteristics of the subgrade, and the dynamic stress and acceleration increase with the water content. With the dowel steel structure set between the rail-bearing beams, stress concentration at the end of the loaded beam can be prevented, and the diffusion distance of the dynamic stress along the longitudinal direction increases. The dynamic stress measured in the subgrade bed range is less than 1/5 of the critical dynamic stress. The postconstruction settlement of the subgrade after similarity ratio conversion is 3.94 mm and 7.72 mm under natural and rainfall conditions, respectively, and both values are less than the 30 mm limit, indicating that the MLS maglev subgrade structure has good long-term dynamic stability.

Abstract Low-frequency carbody swaying phenomenon often occurs to railway vehicles due to hunting instability, which seriously deteriorates the ride comfort of passengers. This paper investigates low-frequency carbody swaying through experimental analysis and numerical simulation. In the tests, the carbody acceleration, the wheel–rail profiles, and the dynamic characteristics of dampers were measured to understand the characteristics of the abnormal carbody vibration and to find out its primary contributor. Linear and nonlinear numerical simulations on the mechanism and optimization measures were carried out to solve this carbody swaying issue. The results showed that the carbody swaying is the manifest of carbody hunting instability. The low equivalent conicity and the decrease of dynamic damping of the yaw damper are probably the cause of this phenomenon. The optimization measures to increase the equivalent conicity and dynamic damping of the yaw damper were put forward and verified by on-track tests. The results of this study could enrich the knowledge of carbody hunting and provide a reference for solving abnormal carbody vibrations.

Abstract Brake systems are essential for the speed regulation or braking of a high-speed train. The vehicle dynamic performance under braking condition is complex and directly affects the reliability and running safety. To reveal the vehicle dynamic behaviour in braking process, a comprehensive trailer car dynamics model (TCDM) considering brake systems is established in this paper. The dynamic interactions between the brake system and the other connected components are achieved using the brake disc–pad frictions, brake suspension systems, and wheel–rail interactions. The force and motion transmission from the brake system to the wheel–rail interface is performed by the proposed TCDM excited by track irregularity. In addition, the validity of TCDM is verified by experimental test results. On this basis, the dynamic behaviour of the coupled system is simulated and discussed. The findings indicate that the braking force significantly affects vehicle dynamic behaviour including the wheel–rail forces, suspension forces, wheelset torsional vibration, etc. The dynamic interactions within the brake system are also significantly affected by the vehicle vibration due to track irregularity. Besides, the developed TCDM can be further employed to the dynamic assessment of such a coupled mechanical system under different braking conditions.

Abstract We establish a simulation model based on the theory of air flow to analyze the accelerated release effect of the quick release valve inside the air brake control valve. In addition, the combined simulation system of train air brake system and longitudinal train dynamics is used to analyze how the parameters of the quick release valve in the 120/120–1 brake control valve affect the propagation characteristics of the train brake pipe pressure wave, the release action range of the accelerated brake, and the longitudinal coupler force for a 20,000-ton heavy haul train on the section of the Datong–Qinhuangdao Railway. The results show that the quick release valve can effectively accelerate the rising speed of the train brake pipe pressure during the initial release, as the accelerated release effect is evident before the train brake pipe pressure reaches 582 kPa. The quick release valve can effectively accelerate the release of the rear cars, reducing the longitudinal coupler force impact due to time delay of the release process. The quick release valve can effectively reduce the tensile coupler force in the train by as much as 20% in certain cases.
