We report the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of heterometallic rings templated via alkylammonium or imidazolium cations. The template and preference of each metal’s coordination geometry can control the structure of heterometallic compounds, leading to octa-, nona-, deca-, dodeca-, and tetradeca-metallic rings. The compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, magnetometry, and EPR measurements. Magnetic measurements show that the exchange coupling between metal centres is antiferromagnetic. EPR spectroscopy shows that the spectra of {Cr7Zn} and {Cr9Zn} have S = 3/2 ground states, while the spectra of {Cr12Zn2} and {Cr8Zn} are consistent with S = 1 and 2 excited states. The EPR spectra of {(ImidH)-Cr6Zn2}, {(1-MeImH)-Cr8Zn2}, and {(1,2-diMeImH)-Cr8Zn2} include a combination of linkage isomers. The results on these related compounds allow us to examine the transferability of magnetic parameters between compounds.

Nanocomposites consisting of strontium ferrite and magnetite are prepared to investigate the effect of exchange coupling between the hard and soft magnetic phases. Hexagonal strontium ferrite, SrFe12O19, synthesized using a solid-state route involving the sintering of precursors at 1000 °C gives a coercivity value as high as 3.73 kOe. An increase in the sintering temperature results in an increase in particle size and a decrease in coercivity. The soft ferrite phase Fe3O4 synthesized by a reverse co-precipitation method shows a saturation magnetization as high as 84 emu/g. Simple homogenous mixing of soft and hard components resulted in an exchange-coupled magnetic nanocomposite. With an increase in the soft magnetic content, the magnetization of the composite increases while the coercivity decreases. On sintering the nanocomposites at 1000 °C, coercivity remains intact even for an increasing soft magnetic content indicating an exchange decoupling between the soft and hard phases. This is attributed to the phase transformation of Fe3O4 to α-Fe2O3 at elevated temperatures.

Experimental evidence for ferromagnetic ordering in isotropic atomically thin two-dimensional crystals has been missing until a bilayer Cr2Ge2Te6, and a three-atom thick monolayer CrI3 are shown to retain ferromagnetic ordering at finite temperatures. Here, we demonstrate successful isolation of a non-van der Waals type ultra-thin nanosheet of FeS2 derived from naturally occurring pyrite mineral (FeS2) by means of liquid-phase exfoliation. Structural characterizations imply that (111) oriented sheets are predominant and is supported theoretically by means of density functional theory surface energy calculations. Spin-polarized density theory calculations further predicted that (111) oriented three-atom thick pyrite sheet has a stable ferromagnetic ground state different from its diamagnetic bulk counterpart. This theoretical finding is evaluated experimentally employing low temperature superconducting quantum interference device measurements and observed an anomalous ferromagnetic kind of behavior., 21 pages, 5 figures

Unfortunately, this approach is currently limited to only a few layers that can be stacked on top of each other. Here, we report a bulk vdW material consisting of superconducting 1H TaS

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures continue to attract intense interest as a route of designing materials with novel properties that cannot be found in naturally occurring materials. Unfortunately, this approach is currently limited to only a few layers that can be stacked on top of each other. Here we report a bulk material consisting of superconducting monolayers interlayered with monolayers displaying charge density waves (CDW). This bulk vdW heterostructure is created by phase transition of 1T-TaS2 to 6R at 800 {\deg}C in an inert atmosphere. Electron microscopy analysis directly shows the presence of alternating 1T and 1H monolayers within the resulting bulk 6R phase. Its superconducting transition (Tc) is found at 2.6 K, exceeding the Tc of the bulk 2H phase of TaS2. The superconducting temperature can be further increased to 3.6 K by exfoliating 6R-TaS2 and then restacking its layers. Using first-principles calculations, we argue that the coexistence of superconductivity and CDW within 6R-TaS2 stems from amalgamation of the properties of adjacent 1H and 1T monolayers, where the former dominates the superconducting state and the latter the CDW behavior.

Manipulating the surface energy, and thereby the wetting properties of solids, has promise for various physical, chemical, biological and industrial processes. Typically, this is achieved by either chemical modification or by controlling the hierarchical structures of surfaces. Here we report a phenomenon whereby the wetting properties of vermiculite laminates are controlled by the hydrated cations on the surface and in the interlamellar space. We find that vermiculite laminates can be tuned from superhydrophilic to hydrophobic simply by exchanging the cations; hydrophilicity decreases with increasing cation hydration free energy, except for lithium. The lithium-exchanged vermiculite laminate is found to provide a superhydrophilic surface due to its anomalous hydrated structure at the vermiculite surface. Building on these findings, we demonstrate the potential application of superhydrophilic lithium exchanged vermiculite as a thin coating layer on microfiltration membranes to resist fouling, and thus, we address a major challenge for oil–water separation technology., Manipulation of surface energy and wetting properties of solids may impact a variety of processes, including membrane fouling. Here the authors tune properties of vermiculite laminates from superhydrophilic to hydrophobic by cation exchange, and demonstrate potential for fouling resistant oil–water separation.

A family of heterometallic rings [Me

PubMed: 31426634, Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials have been obtained by exfoliation of van der Waals crystals. Recently, there has been growing interest in fabricating synthetic 2D crystals which have no layered bulk analogues. These efforts have been focused mainly on the surface growth of molecules in high vacuum. Here, we report an approach to making 2D crystals of covalent solids by chemical conversion of van der Waals layers. As an example, we used 2D indium selenide (InSe) obtained by exfoliation and converted it by direct fluorination into indium fluoride (InF3), which has a nonlayered, rhombohedral structure and therefore cannot possibly be obtained by exfoliation. The conversion of InSe into InF3 is found to be feasible for thicknesses down to three layers of InSe, and the obtained stable InF3 layers are doped with selenium. We study this new 2D material by optical, electron transport, and Raman measurements and show that it is a semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 2.2 eV, exhibiting high optical transparency across the visible and infrared spectral ranges. We also demonstrate the scalability of our approach by chemical conversion of large-area, thin InSe laminates obtained by liquid exfoliation, into InF3 films. The concept of chemical conversion of cleavable thin van der Waals crystals into covalently bonded noncleavable ones opens exciting prospects for synthesizing a wide variety of novel atomically thin covalent crystals.

In this study, it is predicted by density functional theory calculations that graphene-like novel ultra-thin phases of manganese fluoride crystals, that have nonlayered structures in their bulk form, can be stabilized by fluorination of manganese dichalcogenide crystals. First, it is shown that substitution of fluorine atoms with chalcogens in the manganese dichalcogenide host lattice is favorable. Among possible crystal formations, three stable ultra-thin structures of manganese fluoride, 1H-MnF2, 1T-MnF2 and MnF3, are found to be stable by total energy optimization calculations. In addition, phonon calculations and Raman activity analysis reveal that predicted novel single-layers are dynamically stable crystal structures displaying distinctive characteristic peaks in their vibrational spectrum enabling experimental determination of the corresponding phases. Differing from 1H-MnF2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) large gap semiconductor, 1T-MnF2 and MnF3 single-layers are semiconductors with ferromagnetic (FM) ground state.

Understanding the appearance of local electrical connectivity in liquid filled layered graphene oxide subjected to an external electric field is important to design electrically controlled smart permeable devices and also to gain insight into the physics behind electrical effects on confined water permeation. Motivated by recent experiments [K. G. Zhou et al. Nature (London) 559, 236 (2018)NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-018-0292-y], we introduce a new model with random percolating paths for electrical connectivity in micron thick water filled layered graphene oxide, which mimics parallel resistors connected across the top and bottom electrodes. We find that a strong nonuniform radial electric field of the order ∼10-50 mV/nm can be induced between layers depending on the current flow through the formed conducting paths. The maxima of the induced fields are not necessarily close to the electrodes and may be localized in the middle region of the layered material. The emergence of electrical connectivity and the associated electrical effects have a strong influence on the surrounding fluid in terms of ionization and wetting which subsequently determines the permeation properties.

Controlled transport of water molecules through membranes and capillaries is important in areas as diverse as water purification and healthcare technologies1,2,3,4,5,6,7. Previous attempts to control water permeation through membranes (mainly polymeric ones) have concentrated on modulating the structure of the membrane and the physicochemical properties of its surface by varying the pH, temperature or ionic strength3,8. Electrical control over water transport is an attractive alternative; however, theory and simulations9,10,11,12,13,14 have often yielded conflicting results, from freezing of water molecules to melting of ice14,15,16 under an applied electric field. Here we report electrically controlled water permeation through micrometre-thick graphene oxide membranes17,18,19,20,21. Such membranes have previously been shown to exhibit ultrafast permeation of water17,22 and molecular sieving properties18,21, with the potential for industrial-scale production. To achieve electrical control over water permeation, we create conductive filaments in the graphene oxide membranes via controllable electrical breakdown. The electric field that concentrates around these current-carrying filaments ionizes water molecules inside graphene capillaries within the graphene oxide membranes, which impedes water transport. We thus demonstrate precise control of water permeation, from ultrafast permeation to complete blocking. Our work opens up an avenue for developing smart membrane technologies for artificial biological systems, tissue engineering and filtration.

Squeezing through a hole Transport of an ion is usually directly related to its hydrated radius and assumed to be nonflexible. Either a hydrated ion fits through an aperture or it does not, and shape should play a dominant role rather than charge. Esfandiar et al. created nanofluidic devices by stacking structured bulk materials, including graphite, boron nitride, and molybdenum disulfide. They investigated the transport of ions in aqueous solutions through the nanochannels in the devices. Despite being only one-atom thick, defect-free graphene is considered to be completely impermeable to all gases and liquids1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. This conclusion is based on theory3,4,5,6,7,8 and supported by experiments1,9,10 that could not detect gas permeation through micrometre-size membranes within a detection limit of 105 to 106 atoms per second. Here, using small monocrystalline containers tightly sealed with graphene, we show that defect-free graphene is impermeable with an accuracy of eight to nine orders of magnitude higher than in the previous experiments. We are capable of discerning (but did not observe) permeation of just a few helium atoms per hour, and this detection limit is also valid for all other gases tested (neon, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, krypton and xenon), except for hydrogen. Hydrogen shows noticeable permeation, even though its molecule is larger than helium and should experience a higher energy barrier. This puzzling observation is attributed to a two-stage process that involves dissociation of molecular hydrogen at catalytically active graphene ripples, followed by adsorbed atoms flipping to the other side of the graphene sheet with a relatively low activation energy of about 1.0 electronvolt, a value close to that previously reported for proton transport11,12. Our work provides a key reference for the impermeability of two-dimensional materials and is important from a fundamental perspective and for their potential applications.

We show that the hybrids of single-layer graphene oxide with manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles have the best adsorption properties for efficient removal of Pb(II), As(III), and As(V) from contaminated water. The nanohybrids prepared by coprecipitation technique were characterized using atomic force and scanning electron microscopies, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and surface area measurements. Magnetic character of the nanohybrids was ascertained by a vibrating sample magnetometer. Batch experiments were carried out to quantify the adsorption kinetics and adsorption capacities of the nanohybrids and compared with the bare nanoparticles of MnFe2O4. The adsorption data from our experiments fit the Langmuir isotherm, yielding the maximum adsorption capacity higher than the reported values so far. Temperature-dependent adsorption studies have been done to estimate the free energy and enthalpy of adsorption. Reusability, ease of magnetic separation, high removal efficiency, high surface area, and fast kinetics make these nanohybrids very attractive candidates for low-cost adsorbents for the effective coremoval of heavy metals from contaminated water.

In order to further understand the impact of porous characteristics of the electrode materials on their electrosorption performance, we have conducted a systematic investigation on the cause effect relationship among various parameters, such as precursor concentrations, 3D rGO packing densities and out-of-plane porosities. Firstly, when the precursor concentrations for 3D rGO were changed from low to high concentrations, sample rGO-4 with medium GO concentration showed a dual pore size distribution with higher numbers of mesopores as well as the less stacking of the rGO sheets, demonstrated better electrosorption specific capacitance of 236 F g−1 than the low and high GO concentrations. Secondly, when the out-of-plane hierarchal pores were created by employing sacrificing nanocrystal-template crystals α-Fe2O3, sample T-rGO displayed higher micropore volume and the more active sites of the hierarchal pores, while its 3D graphene structure remained highly interconnected, both facilitated better ion access and achieved a specific capacitance of 409 F g−1. In capacitive deionization (CDI) experiments, sample T-rGO demonstrated a fast salt adsorption and desorption cycle and achieved 100% complete desorption/regeneration within an average of 59 min and a higher electrosorption capacity of 7.3 mg g−1. This study not only provided insights on the impact of rGO packing density on the electrosorption behavior, but also confirmed that creating additional out-of-plane nanopores by partial removal of template crystals post hydrothermal synthesis was a promising strategy to prepare porous electrode material for CDI.

Graphene is impermeable to all gases and liquids, and even such a small atom as hydrogen is not expected to penetrate through graphene's dense electronic cloud within billions of years. Here we show that monolayers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are unexpectedly permeable to thermal protons, hydrogen ions under ambient conditions. As a reference, no proton transport could be detected for a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide, bilayer graphene or multilayer hBN. At room temperature, monolayer hBN exhibits the highest proton conductivity with a low activation energy of about 0.3 eV but graphene becomes a better conductor at elevated temperatures such that its resistivity to proton flow is estimated to fall below 10^-3 Ohm per cm2 above 250 C. The proton barriers can be further reduced by decorating monolayers with catalytic nanoparticles. Photorefractive polymer composites have gained considerable attention due to their fascinating applications like 3D displays and 3D Telepresence. In this report, the performance of a novel PR polymer composite doped with graphene is studied. The addition of graphene laminates to a photorefractive composite results in up to threefold enhancement of space charge (SC) field build-up time. From our optical and electrical measurements, the faster build-up time is attributed to larger charge generation resulting from electronic interaction between graphene and the 7-DCST chromophores.

Two-dimensional crystals with strong interactions between layers has attracted increasing attention in recent years in a variety of fields. In particular, the growth of a single layer of oxide materials (e.g., MgO, CaO, NiO, and MnO) over metallic substrates were found to display different physical properties than their bulk. In this study, we report on the physical properties of a single layer of metallic oxide materials and compare their properties with their bulk and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals. We found that the planar structure of metallic monoxides are unstable whereas the buckled structures are thermodynamically stable. Also, the 2D-MnO and NiO exhibit different magnetic (ferromagnetic) and optical properties than their bulk, whereas band-gap energy and linear stiffness are found to be decreasing from NiO to MgO. Our findings provide insight into oxide thin-film technology applications.

Ion permeation and selectivity of graphene oxide membranes with sub-nm channels dramatically alters with the change in interlayer distance due to dehydration effects whereas permeation of water molecules remains largely unaffected. Graphene oxide membranes show exceptional molecular permeation properties, with promise for many applications1,2,3,4,5. However, their use in ion sieving and desalination technologies is limited by a permeation cutoff of ∼9 A (ref. 4), which is larger than the diameters of hydrated ions of common salts4,6. The cutoff is determined by the interlayer spacing (d) of ∼13.5 A, typical for graphene oxide laminates that swell in water2,4. Achieving smaller d for the laminates immersed in water has proved to be a challenge. Here, we describe how to control d by physical confinement and achieve accurate and tunable ion sieving. Membranes with d from ∼9.8 A to 6.4 A are demonstrated, providing a sieve size smaller than the diameters of hydrated ions. In this regime, ion permeation is found to be thermally activated with energy barriers of ∼10–100 kJ mol–1 depending on d. Importantly, permeation rates decrease exponentially with decreasing sieve size but water transport is weakly affected (by a factor of

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes continue to attract intense interest due to their unique molecular sieving properties combined with fast permeation rates. However, the membranes' use has been limited mostly to aqueous solutions because GO membranes appear to be impermeable to organic solvents, a phenomenon not fully understood yet. Here, we report efficient and fast filtration of organic solutions through GO laminates containing smooth two-dimensional (2D) capillaries made from flakes with large sizes of ~ 10-20 micron. Without sacrificing their sieving characteristics, such membranes can be made exceptionally thin, down to ~ 10 nm, which translates into fast permeation of not only water but also organic solvents. We attribute the organic solvent permeation and sieving properties of ultrathin GO laminates to the presence of randomly distributed pinholes that are interconnected by short graphene channels with a width of 1 nm. With increasing the membrane thickness, the organic solvent permeation rates decay exponentially but water continues to permeate fast, in agreement with previous reports. The application potential of our ultrathin laminates for organic-solvent nanofiltration is demonstrated by showing >99.9% rejection of various organic dyes with small molecular weights dissolved in methanol. Our work significantly expands possibilities for the use of GO membranes in purification, filtration and related technologies.

The effect of moderate normal and tangential spherical loading on the durability of brittle ceramic films sputtered on polymer substrates is investigated. Indium tin oxide films with various thicknesses are deposited by sputtering on polyethylene terephthalate substrates and their mechanical durability is assessed using a spherical nanoindenter and scratch tester with built-in optical microscopy capability. It is observed that crack initiation occurs at 40 mN normal applied load. As loading increases, formation of brittle ring cracking and of secondary radial cracks is evident. It is also shown that ring crack spacing is thickness dependent. During scratch testing two main coating failure modes are observed. The first is through thickness cracking and the second is buckling spallation of the coating. Both failure mechanisms exhibit thickness dependence.

Graphene-based materials can have well-defined nanometer pores and can exhibit low frictional water flow inside them, making their properties of interest for filtration and separation. We investigate permeation through micrometer-thick laminates prepared by means of vacuum filtration of graphene oxide suspensions. The laminates are vacuum-tight in the dry state but, if immersed in water, act as molecular sieves, blocking all solutes with hydrated radii larger than 4.5 angstroms. Smaller ions permeate through the membranes at rates thousands of times faster than what is expected for simple diffusion. We believe that this behavior is caused by a network of nanocapillaries that open up in the hydrated state and accept only species that fit in. The anomalously fast permeation is attributed to a capillary-like high pressure acting on ions inside graphene capillaries.

We report a stoichiometric derivative of graphene with a fluorine atom attached to each carbon. Raman, optical, structural, micromechanical and transport studies show that the material is qualitatively different from the known graphene-based nonstoichiometric derivatives. Fluorographene is a high-quality insulator (resistivity >10^12 Ohm per square) with an optical gap of 3 eV. It inherits the mechanical strength of graphene, exhibiting Young's modulus of 100 N/m and sustaining strains of 15%. This paper describes the use of a nanoindenter, equipped with a diamond tip, to form patterns of indentations on planar substrates (epoxy, silicon, and SiO(2)). The process is called "Indentation Lithography" (IndL). The indentations have the form of pits and furrows, whose cross-sectional profiles are determined by the shapes of the diamond indenters, and whose dimensions are determined by the applied load and hardness of the substrate. IndL makes it possible to indent hard materials, to produce patterns with multiple levels of relief by changing the loading force, and to control the profiles of the indentations by using indenters with different shapes. This paper also demonstrates the transfer of indented patterns to elastomeric PDMS stamps for soft lithography, and to thin films of evaporated gold or silver. Stripping an evaporated film from an indented template produces patterns of gold or silver pyramids, whose tips concentrate electric fields. Patterns produced by IndL can thus be used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and for other plasmonic applications.

The shape of ripples in free-standing graphene is derived from bond length distributions in high-angle annular-dark-field (Z-contrast) images, obtained in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (superSTEM). Local undulation patterns can readily be visualized by applying fast Fourier transform procedures to the lattice images, using a spatial frequency Mer which passes the precise graphitic a-plane spacing. Using aberration-corrected STEM presents the unique opportunity to correlate atomic resolution imaging with the undulations. Values for projected bond lengths, and hence bond inclinations, can be obtained by adjusting the fill to the appropriate band pass. Ripples with amplitude similar to 0.2 in and width similar to 5 nm were observed. Their patterns mod in repeated image scans, with prolonged scanning introducing vacancies. These, in conjunction with adatoms which re also revealed in Z-contrast, induce highly localized Change in the mechanical properties of graphene. Plasmon spectroscopy of the thinnest possible membrane, a single layer of carbon atoms, graphene, has been carried out in conjunction with ab initio calculations of the low loss function. We observe pi- and pi+ sigma-surface plasmon modes in free-standing single sheets at 4.7 eV and 14.8 eV which are substantially red-shifted from their values in graphite. These modes are in very good agreement with the theoretical spectra which find the pi- and pi + pi in-plane modes of graphene at 4.5 eV and 14.5 eV. We also find that there is little loss caused by out-of-plane modes for energies less than about 10 eV. (C) 2008 WILEY-NCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

Despite graphene’s long list of exceptional electronic properties and many theoretical predictions regarding the possibility of superconductivity in graphene, its direct and unambiguous experimental observation has not been achieved. We searched for superconductivity in weakly interacting, metal decorated graphene crystals assembled into so-called graphene laminates, consisting of well separated and electronically decoupled graphene crystallites. We report robust superconductivity in all Ca-doped graphene laminates. They become superconducting at temperatures (Tc) between ≈4 and ≈6 K, with Tc’s strongly dependent on the confinement of the Ca layer and the induced charge carrier concentration in graphene. We find that Ca is the only dopant that induces superconductivity in graphene laminates above 1.8 K among several dopants used in our experiments, such as potassium, caesium and lithium. By revealing the tunability of the superconducting response through doping and confinement of the metal layer, our work shows that achieving superconductivity in free-standing, metal decorated monolayer graphene is conditional on an optimum confinement of the metal layer and sufficient doping, thereby bringing its experimental realization within grasp.

We report the dynamics of photoinduced carriers in a free-standing MoS2 laminate consisting of a few layers (1-6 layers) using time-resolved optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy. Upon photoexcitation with the 800 nm pump pulse, the terahertz conductivity increases due to absorption by the photoinduced charge carriers. The relaxation of the non-equilibrium carriers shows fast as well as slow decay channels, analyzed using a rate equation model incorporating defect-assisted Auger scattering of photoexcited electrons, holes, and excitons. The fast relaxation time occurs due to the capture of electrons and holes by defects via Auger processes, resulting in nonradiative recombination. The slower relaxation arises since the excitons are bound to the defects, preventing the defect-assisted Auger recombination of the electrons and the holes. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the non-equilibrium carrier kinetics in a system of unscreened Coulomb interactions, where defect-assisted Auger processes dominate and should be applicable to other 2D systems.

Corrigendum: Atomically resolved imaging of highly ordered alternating fluorinated graphene

One of the most desirable goals of graphene research is to produce ordered two-dimensional (2D) chemical derivatives of suitable quality for monolayer device fabrication. Here we reveal, by focal series exit wave reconstruction (EWR), that C2F chair is a stable graphene derivative and demonstrates pristine long-range order limited only by the size of a functionalized domain. Focal series of images of graphene and C2F chair formed by reaction with XeF2 were obtained at 80 kV in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope. EWR images reveal that single carbon atoms and carbon-fluorine pairs in C2F chair alternate strictly over domain sizes of at least 150 nm(2) with electron diffraction indicating ordered domains ≥ 0.16 μm(2). Our results also indicate that, within an ordered domain, functionalization occurs on one side only as theory predicts. In addition, we show that electron diffraction provides a quick and easy method for distinguishing between graphene, C2F chair and fully fluorinated stoichiometric CF 2D phases.

Graphene films have been formed by annealing Ni thin films at 800 °C under vacuum conditions. The Ni thin films are deposited on Si/SiO2 and, following annealing, have a polycrystalline morphology with grain sizes on the order of 1 μm. Following growth, the Ni is removed by etching, and the graphene is transferred as a single continuous layer onto a separate surface. The fraction of monolayer graphene is investigated using optical and electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy and is shown to be >75%.

Barrier films preventing permeation of gases and moistures are important for many industries ranging from food to medical and from chemical to electronic. From this perspective, graphene has recently attracted particular interest because its defect free monolayers are impermeable to all gases and liquids. However, it has proved challenging to develop large-area defectless graphene films suitable for industrial use. Here we report barrier properties of multilayer graphitic films made by chemical reduction of easily and cheaply produced graphene oxide laminates. They are found to provide a practically perfect barrier that blocks all gases, liquids and aggressive chemicals including, for example, hydrofluoric acid. In particular, if graphene oxide laminates are reduced in hydroiodic acid, no permeation of hydrogen and water could be detected for films as thin as 30 nm, which remain optically transparent. The films thicker than 100 nm become completely impermeable. The exceptional barrier properties are attributed to a high degree of graphitization of the laminates and little structural damage during reduction. This work indicates a close prospect of thin protective coatings with stability and inertness similar to that of graphene and bulk graphite, which can be interesting for numerous applications.

Bulk water exists in many forms, including liquid, vapour and numerous crystalline and amorphous phases of ice, with hexagonal ice being responsible for the fascinating variety of snowflakes. Much less noticeable but equally ubiquitous is water adsorbed at interfaces and confined in microscopic pores. Such low-dimensional water determines aspects of various phenomena in materials science, geology, biology, tribology and nanotechnology. Theory suggests many possible phases for adsorbed and confined water, but it has proved challenging to assess its crystal structure experimentally. Here we report high-resolution electron microscopy imaging of water locked between two graphene sheets, an archetypal example of hydrophobic confinement. The observations show that the nanoconfined water at room temperature forms 'square ice'--a phase having symmetry qualitatively different from the conventional tetrahedral geometry of hydrogen bonding between water molecules. Square ice has a high packing density with a lattice constant of 2.83 A and can assemble in bilayer and trilayer crystallites. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that square ice should be present inside hydrophobic nanochannels independently of their exact atomic nature.

Image annotation is the process of assigning meaningful keywords to an image. In automatic image annotation, this process is executed automatically by checking the semantics of the image. The semantics contained in an image is interpreted by extracting some high level and low level image features. This work implements a system that automatically annotates colour images using a special feature extraction mechanism, which can be very effectively used for image sequence recognition or classification. This special feature is driven out by combining, three features under research, namely, Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) and a color feature based on HSV Colour structure. Thus, we formed a synthesized feature descriptor which essentially describes three aspects visual perception, the colour, shape, and points of interest. The proposed system follows a hybrid approach which first trains a specific set of data and annotation is performed using fuzzy K-NN classification. In our experiment, it has been observed that the system has good accuracy and high potential in textual description of digital photographic images.

Graphene is emerging as a viable alternative to conventional optoelectronic, plasmonic, and nanophotonic materials. The interaction of light with carriers creates an out-of-equilibrium distribution, which relaxes on an ultrafast timescale to a hot Fermi-Dirac distribution, that subsequently cools via phonon emission. Here we combine pump-probe spectroscopy, featuring extreme temporal resolution and broad spectral coverage, with a microscopic theory based on the quantum Boltzmann equation, to investigate electron-electron collisions in graphene during the very early stages of relaxation. We identify the fundamental physical mechanisms controlling the ultrafast dynamics in graphene, in particular the significant role of ultrafast collinear scattering, enabling Auger processes, including charge multiplication, key to improving photovoltage generation and photodetectors., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

A possibility to control magnetic properties by using electric fields is one of the most desirable characteristics for spintronics applications. Finding a suitable material remains an elusive goal, with only a few candidates found so far. Graphene is one of them and offers a hope due to its weak spin-orbit interaction, the ability to control electronic properties by the electric field effect and the possibility to introduce paramagnetic centres such as vacancies and adatoms. Here we show that adatoms magnetism in graphene is itinerant and can be controlled by doping, so that magnetic moments can be switched on and off. The much-discussed vacancy magnetism is found to have a dual origin, with two approximately equal contributions: one coming from the same itinerant magnetism and the other due to broken bonds. Our work suggests that magnetic response of graphene can be controlled by the field effect, similar to its transport and optical properties, and that spin diffusion length can be significantly enhanced above a certain carrier density., 15 pages, 8 figures

2D atomic crystals such as single layer graphene (SLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been shown to be “unexpectedly permeable” to hydrogen ions under ambient conditions with the proton conductivity rising exponentially with temperature. Here, the first successful addition of SLG made by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is shown to an operational direct methanol fuel cell significantly enhancing the performance of the cell once the temperature is raised above 60 °C, the temperature at which the proton conductivity of SLG is higher than the Nafion membrane on which it is mounted. Above this temperature, the resistance to proton transport of the system is not affected by the graphene but the barrier properties of graphene inhibit methanol crossover. The performance of the fuel cell is shown to increase linearly with coverage of SLG above this temperature. Results show that the maximum power density is increased at 70 °C by 45% in comparison to the standard membrane electrode assembly without graphene. In addition, a membrane with CVD hBN shows enhanced performance across the entire temperature range due to better proton conductivity at lower temperatures.

Using magnetization measurements, we show that point defects in graphene - fluorine adatoms and irradiation defects (vacancies) - carry magnetic moments with spin 1/2. Both types of defects lead to notable paramagnetism but no magnetic ordering could be detected down to liquid helium temperatures. The induced paramagnetism dominates graphene's low-temperature magnetic properties despite the fact that maximum response we could achieve was limited to one moment per approximately 1000 carbon atoms. This limitation is explained by clustering of adatoms and, for the case of vacancies, by losing graphene's structural stability., 14 pages, 14 figures

(Received 12 August 2011; revised manuscript received 24 October 2011; published 24 January 2012) Boron nitride (BN) sheets were exfoliated, and proof of the presence of single and double layers was obtained via electron diffraction and plasmon electron energy loss spectroscopy. A plasmon structure unique to monoand bi-layer BN was established, and was accompanied by WIEN2K DFT calculations. The latter reproduced plasmon energies and general plasmon structure well; however, the detailed shape of the π-plasmon of the calculated pure BN spectra shows discrepancies with the experimental data. The theoretical models were then modified to include impurity atoms. Both oxygen and carbon impurities were considered, as well as different structures, including singular oxygen atoms and oxygen next to carbon atoms. These various configurations were obtained by analyzing atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) images. Using these modified models, a π-plasmon structure close to the experimentally observed structure could be simulated.

In this letter we use graphene bubbles to study the Raman spectrum of graphene under biaxial (e.g. isotropic) strain. Our Gruneisen parameters are in excellent agreement with the theoretical values. Discrepancy in the previously reported values is attributed to the interaction of graphene with the substrate. Bilayer balloons (intentionally pressurized membranes) have been used to avoid the effect of the substrate and to study the dependence of strain on the inter-layer interactions., 14 pages, 4 figures

The polarization-resolved Raman-scattering response due to E-2g phonons in monolayer graphene has been investigated in magnetic fields up to 29 T. The hybridization of the E-2g phonon is only observed with the fundamental inter-Landau-level excitation (involving the n = 0 Landau level) and in just one of the two configurations of the circularly cross-polarized excitation and scattered light. This polarization anisotropy of the magnetophonon resonance is shown to be inherent to relatively strongly doped graphene samples with carrier concentrations typical for graphene deposited on Si/SiO2 substrates.
