Introduction: Demographic transition enhanced the proportion of geriatric population in India. Senior citizens experience progressive economic dependency for their daily survival. The Government of India provides economic assistance through social welfare schemes. However, inadequate awareness of schemes is the key reason for its low utilization. The present study was implemented to evaluate knowledge and utilization of social welfare schemes and also to assess the effect of educational intervention on awareness of elderly persons about welfare schemes. Materials and Methods: A community-based interventional study carried out from July to December 2022. A structured ‘TIV intervention’ comprised of ‘Training module’, ‘Interactive sessions’ and ‘Village Health Meeting’ was administered on 839 elderly persons in one of the rural blocks of Mahabubnagar district of Telangana State of India. Community health workers were actively involved in sensitization sessions. Pre- and postintervention questionnaires were completed through face-to-face interview with participants by trained social workers. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Version 20 Software. Results: There was a statistically significant improvement in awareness levels and utilization of social welfare schemes due to TIV intervention (P < 0.001, SD = 3.01vs 1.21). The awareness of schemes was significantly greater among males, literates, socioeconomic scale of classes 1 and 2 and with age group of 60-70 years. Conclusions: Simple, cost-effective intervention can make significant gain in awareness and utilization levels of social welfare schemes among elderly population. ‘Traditional Village Meetings’ can be used as a potential opportunity to sensitize community members about social welfare schemes.

Abstract The increase in mineral and ash-rich waste biomass (MWB) generation in emerging economies poses critical environmental problems and bottlenecks the solid waste and wastewater treatment systems. Transforming these MWB such as sewage sludge from wastewater treatment (SSW) to biochar can be a sustainable method for their disposal and resource recovery. However, such biochar has limited applicability due to the relatively low organic content and possibly contaminated nature of SSW. This may be offset through combined pyrolysis with other MWB, which can also support municipal solid waste management. Studies on this MWB co-pyrolysis are lacking and have not yet seen successful long-term implementation. This work is the second part of authors’ research encompassing an analytical and lab-scale investigation of biochar production from MWB through pyrolysis for the case of Chennai city, India. Here, the physicochemical properties of biochar derived from lab-scale co-pyrolysis of SSW with other MWB such as anaerobic digestate from waste to energy plants of food, kitchen or market waste fermentation, and banana peduncles (BP) collected from vegetable markets and their thermolysis mechanism are comprehensively investigated for purpose of carbon sequestration. Also, a novel preliminary investigation of the effect of sample weight (scaling effect) on the analytical pyrolysis of biomass (BP as model substrate) is undertaken to elucidate its impact on the heat of pyrolysis and carbon distribution in resultant biochar. The maximum carbon sequestration potential of the derived biochar types is 0.22 kg CO2 kg−1 biomass. The co-pyrolysis of MWB is exothermic and governed by the synergetic effects of the components in blends with emission profiles following the order CO2 > CH4 > CO > NH3. Co-pyrolysis reduced the heavy metal enrichment in SSW biochar. The derived biochars can be an immediate source of N, P and S in nutrient-deficient acidic soils. The biochar has only up to 4-ring polyaromatic compounds and a residence time longer than 1 h at 500 °C is necessary to improve carbonization. The heat released during analytical pyrolysis of the model biomass and distribution of carbon in the resultant biochar are significantly influenced by scaling effects, drawing attention to the need for a more detailed scaling investigation of biomass pyrolysis.

Purpose: Diseases affecting the cornea are a major cause of corneal blindness globally. The pressing issue we are facing today is the lack of diagnostic devices in rural areas to diagnose these conditions. The aim of the study is to establish sensitivity and accuracy of smartphone photography using a smart eye camera (SEC) in ophthalmologic community outreach programs. Methods: In this pilot study, a prospective non-randomized comparative analysis of inter-observer variability of anterior segment imaging recorded using an SEC was performed. Consecutive 100 patients with corneal pathologies, who visited the cornea specialty outpatient clinic, were enrolled. They were examined with a conventional non-portable slit lamp by a cornea consultant, and the diagnoses were recorded. This was compared with the diagnoses made by two other consultants based on SEC videos of the anterior segment of the same 100 patients. The accuracy of SEC was accessed using sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV. Kappa statistics was used to find the agreement between two consultants by using STATA 17.0 (Texas, USA). Results: There was agreement between the two consultants to diagnosing by using SEC. Above 90% agreements were found in all the diagnoses, which were statistically significant (P-value < 0.001). More than 90% sensitivity and a negative predictive value were found. Conclusion: SEC can be used successfully in the community outreach programs like field visits, eye camps, teleophthalmology, and community centers, where either a clinical setup is lacking or ophthalmologists are not available.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a substantial imaging procedure for diagnosing brain tumors. However, brain tumor classification continues challenging due to the unequal distribution of classes within datasets, complicating precise diagnosis and classification. This research focuses on the class imbalance in medical image datasets by proposing a hybrid bio-inspired algorithm for brain tumor classification. A rider optimization and particle rider mutual information-based dendritic-squirrel search algorithm combined with an artificial immune classifier is developed and tested on imbalanced datasets generated from BRATS and SimBRATS. Experimental outcomes are encouraging, For the imbalanced BRATS dataset, the rider optimizationbased classifier achieved an accuracy of 94.84%, sensitivity of 92.96%, and specificity of 94.95%. The particle rider mutual information-based classifier outperformed others with 96.25% accuracy, 94.33% sensitivity, and 94.85% specificity. For the imbalanced SimBRATS dataset, the rider optimizationbased classifier achieved 94.95% accuracy, 92.05% sensitivity, and 94.04% specificity. The particle rider mutual information-based classifier excelled with 96.35% accuracy, 94.42% sensitivity, and 95.44% specificity. These findings suggest that the proposed algorithm effectively addresses class imbalance in medical image datasets, offering a robust solution for brain tumor classification. The particle rider mutual information-based classifier shows promise for enhancing diagnostic accuracy in clinical settings, demonstrating the efficacy of hybridized bio-inspired algorithms in managing imbalanced datasets. Aim: The aim of this study was to conduct a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey concerning the practice of occlusal splint for treating temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) by the dental practitioners of Jabalpur. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire containing questions on diagnosis, treatment, and management of TMD was given to a total of 157 general dental practitioners in Jabalpur. The responses were collected; data analysis was done by Chi-square test. Results: Of the General Dental Practitioner's, nearly 78% of participants did not attend any continuing dental education on TMD per year. More than 10 years of experience (82%) was associated with increase in positive response for treatment of TMD patient. Both the diagnosis and treatment of TMD patient were done using combination methods. The duration of splint use was considered patient dependent (42.27%) irrespective of the years of practice. Soft splint was most commonly employed for treatment, and fabrication of splint was done on hinge and mean value articulator. Conclusion: The knowledge of occlusal splint by general practitioners was found to be insufficient for treating TMDs.

Background: The aim of this study is the effect of stress distribution within the bone with varying implant crest module designs. Materials and Methods: Finite element models of a straight two-piece 4 mm × 13 mm screw-shaped threaded implant with divergent, straight, and convergent implant crest module with their surrounding suprastructure embedded in mandibular second premolar area were created with ANSYS software. Different implant crest module designs incorporated in D2 types of bone under 100N axial and 100N at 20° oblique load were created to evaluate stress distribution in the crestal bone around implant crest module. Results: Maximum von Mises stress was observed at the crestal region of the bone and at crest module region of the implants in all the models. Divergent crest module design shows minimum von Mises stress at crestal bone during vertical loading within bone and at implant crest module. Straight crest module designs result in minimum stresses during oblique loading than vertical loading. Convergent crest module design shows maximum von Mises stress. Conclusion: Within limitations of the study, it was concluded that stress distribution in adjacent compact bone is greatly influenced by implant crest module design. Divergent crest module designs result in minimum stresses at crestal bone and in the implant crest module region, followed by straight and convergent crest module in ascending order of stress distribution.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of bandemia in confirmed respiratory viral infections in febrile infants and children presenting to the emergency department.Methods: An observational retrospective study from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2016, was conducted in patients between the ages of ≥ 1 month and ≤ 5 years presenting to the emergency room with fever and who had a complete blood cell count performed. Patients were separated into seven groups based on the type of respiratory viral infection. Inclusion criteria strictly counted children with viral infections and absence of clinical and laboratory evidence of a bacterial coinfection.Results: A total of 419 patients had a documented viral infection. A significant proportion of these children were found to have bandemia; children with adenovirus (17%), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (14.9%), human metapneumovirus (hMPV) (13%), and parainfluenza virus (7.9%) had the highest prevalence when the cutoff for bandemia was set at 10%. The prevalence increased to 35.3, 30.9, 40.3, and 15.8% for adenovirus, RSV, hMPV, and parainfluenza virus, respectively, when this cutoff was lowered further to 5%.Conclusion: Band neutrophils are detected frequently in confirmed respiratory viral infections particularly during early stages.

Currently, a serious threat for living organisms and human life in particular, is water contamination with persistent organic and inorganic pollutants. To date, several techniques have been adopted to remove/treat organics and toxic contaminants. Adsorption is one of the most effective and economical methods for this purpose. Generally, porous materials are considered as appropriate adsorbents for water purification. Conventional adsorbents such as activated carbons have a limited possibility of surface modification (texture and functionality), and their adsorption capacity is difficult to control. Therefore, despite the significant progress achieved in the development of the systems for water remediation, there is still a need for novel adsorptive materials with tunable functional characteristics. This review addresses the new trends in the development of new adsorbent materials. Herein, modern carbon-based materials, such as graphene, oxidized carbon, carbon nanotubes, biomass-derived carbonaceous matrices—biochars as well as their composites with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived highly-ordered carbons are considered as advanced adsorbents for removal of hazardous organics from drinking water, process water, and leachate. The review is focused on the preparation and modification of these next-generation carbon-based adsorbents and analysis of their adsorption performance including possible adsorption mechanisms. Simultaneously, some weak points of modern carbon-based adsorbents are analyzed as well as the routes to conquer them. For instance, for removal of large quantities of pollutants, the combination of adsorption and other methods, like sedimentation may be recommended. A number of efficient strategies for further enhancing the adsorption performance of the carbon-based adsorbents, in particular, integrating approaches and further rational functionalization, including composing these adsorbents (of two or even three types) can be recommended. The cost reduction and efficient regeneration must also be in the focus of future research endeavors. The targeted optimization of the discussed carbon-based adsorbents associated with detailed studies of the adsorption process, especially, for multicomponent adsorbate solution, will pave a bright avenue for efficient water remediation.

Background: Community Medicine is a subject which receives relatively less attention in medical curriculum. Active participation of students in preparation of training modules for Community Health Workers (CHWs) could facilitate their learning in topics related to Community Medicine. This study aimed to involve medical students in the preparation of training modules for CHWs and assess the effects of their participation on their knowledge about targeted diseases. Methods: An interventional study where all 144 undergraduate fifth-semester students from Bharati Vidyapeeth University Medical College, Pune, India posted at Community Medicine Department participated in the preparation of training modules for CHWs on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and diabetes and completed pre- and post-intervention questionnaire. Each completed questionnaire was assigned a score based on a marking system. The data was analysed using paired t test.
