Charge-exchange $(d,{}^{2}\text{He})$ reactions in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies are a very promising method to investigate the Gamow-Teller transition strength in unstable nuclei. A simulation and analysis software based on the $\rm{\scriptsize ATTPCROOT}$ package was developed to study these type of reactions with the active-target time projection chamber (AT-TPC). The simulation routines provide a realistic detector response that can be used to understand and benchmark experimental data. Analysis tools and correction routines can be developed and tested from simulations in $\rm{\scriptsize ATTPCROOT}$, because they are processed in the same way as the real data. In particular, we study the feasibility of using coincidences with beam-like particles to unambiguously identify the $(d,{}^{2}\text{He})$ reaction channel, and to develop a kinematic fitting routine for future applications. More technically, the impact of space-charge effects in the track reconstruction, and a possible correction method are investigated in detail. This analysis and simulation package constitutes an essential part of the software development for the fast-beams program with the AT-TPC.

For the first time, the $(d,{}^2\text{He})$ reaction was successfully used in inverse kinematics to extract the Gamow-Teller transition strength in the $\beta^{+}$ direction from an unstable nucleus. The nucleus studied was $^{14}$O, and the Gamow-Teller transition strength to $^{14}$N was extracted up to an excitation energy of 22 MeV. The measurement of the $(d,{}^2\text{He})$ reaction in inverse kinematics was made possible by the combination of an active target time projection chamber and a magnetic spectrometer. The data were used to test shell-model and state-of-the-art coupled cluster calculations. Shell-model calculations reproduce the measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution up to about 15 MeV reasonably well, after the application of a phenomenological quenching factor. Coupled-cluster calculation reproduces the full strength distribution well without such quenching, owing to the large model space, the inclusion of strong correlations, and the coupling of the weak interaction to two nucleons through two-body currents. This indicates that such calculations provide a very promising path for answering long-standing questions about the observed quenching of Gamow-Teller strengths in nuclei.

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols developed for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). In WBANs, small batteryoperated on-body or implanted biomedical sensor nodes are used to monitor physiological signs such as temperature, blood pressure, ElectroCardioGram (ECG), ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) etc. We discuss design requirements for WBANs with major sources of energy dissipation. Then, we further investigate the existing designed protocols for WBANs with focus on their strengths and weaknesses. Energy efficient routing protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is one of the most challenging task for researcher. Hierarchical routing protocols have been proved more energy efficient routing protocols, as compare to flat and location based routing protocols. Heterogeneity of nodes with respect to their energy level, has also added extra lifespan for sensor network. In this paper, we propose a Centralized Energy Efficient Clustering (CEEC) routing protocol. We design the CEEC for three level heterogeneous network. CEEC can also be implemented in multi-level heterogeneity of networks. For initial practical, we design and analyze CEEC for three level advance heterogeneous network. Silicates are one of the most abundant presolar phases around evolved stars, in the inter-stellar medium (ISM), and in our Solar System. These grains afford the opportunity for O, Si, Mg, Fe, and Ca isotopic analyses to constrain stellar nucleosynthetic and mixing processes, and Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). While Mg and Fe isotopic studies have been successfully conducted on presolar silicates, isotopic analyses beyond O and Si are often hampered by the small grain sizes (average ~250 nm). This also makes coordinated mineral and chemical characterization challenging. These studies provide insight into the dust condensation conditions as well as subsequent alteration in the ISM and/or the Solar System. TEM studies of presolar silicates have shown that they are much more mineralogically and chemically diverse than other presolar phases [1 and references therein]. Large (>500nm) presolar silicate grains are rare, but they allow for detailed isotopic, mineral, and chemical characterization. We identified a large presolar silicate grain in the MET 00426 CR2 chondrite and report the O, Si, Mg, and Fe isotopic compositions and TEM study of this grain.

The Genesis Discovery Mission passively allowed solar wind (SW) to implant into substrates during exposure times up to ~853 days from 2001 to 2004. The spacecraft then returned the SW to Earth for analysis. Substrates included semiconductor wafers (silicon, sapphire, and germanium), as well as a number of thin films supported by either silicon or sapphire wafers. During flight, subsets of the SW collectors were exposed to one of 4 SW regimes: bulk solar wind, coronal hole solar wind (CH, high speed), interstream solar wind (IS, low speed) or coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Each SW regime had a different composition and range of ion speeds and, during their collection, uniquely changed their host SW collector. This study focuses on bulk vs IS SW effects on CZ silicon.

The Aguas Zarcas meteorite is a new CM2 chondrite which fell on 23 April 2019 (local time) in Costa Rica. Aguas Zarcas is brecciated and contains several different lithologies, e.g., metal-rich lithology and CI-like lithology. This fresh CM2 chondrite gives us good op-portunities for analyses of organic matter (OM) without terrestrial contamination and weathering, particularly some stones which were collected before rain fell over the fall site. We also aim to characterize local hetero-geneities and associations of organic and mineral phases using state-of-the-art microscopic techniques to con-strain the origin and evolutionally processes of OM during pre- and post-accretion.

Primitive carbonaceous asteroids are the target bodies for the JAXA Hayabusa2 mission to Ryugu and the NASA OSIRIS-REx mission to Bennu. Both asteroids share spectral characteristics of CI/CM type carbonaceous chondrites. Ryugu, in particular, appears to have undergone thermal processing that has modified its spectral properties. The nature and extent of space weathering processes on the surfaces of Bennu and Ryugu are under active investigation using remote sensing data from the missions [4] and through laboratory studies on analog materials. The analog studies are needed in order to understand the mineralogical and chemical changes that occur in space weathered samples that give rise to the observed optical effects measured by remote-sensing and to prepare for the analysis of returned samples. The space weathering effects of micrometeorite impact and solar wind irradiation on primitive carbonaceous chondrites have been simulated by analog studies on the Murchison CM2 chondrite. We performed a coordinated mineralogical, chemical and spectroscopic study to examine in detail the effects of thermal metamorphism on Murchison samples as an analog to processes that may have occurred on Ryugu. The bulk measurements including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and evolved gas analysis are reported in a companion paper. Here we report on our preliminary nanoscale mineralogical and chemical analyses of pre- and post-heated Murchison samples using multiple electron beam techniques to understand how the mineralogical, chemical, and physical characteristics of carbonaceous chondrites change with increasing thermal effects.

Micrometeoroid impacts, solar wind plasma interactions, and regolith gardening drive the complicated and nuanced mechanism of space weathering (or optical maturation); a process by which a material’s optical properties are changed as a result of chemical and physical alterations at the surface of grains on airless bodies. Reddened slopes, attenuated absorption bands, and an overall reduction in albedo in the visible and near-IR wavelength ranges are primarily the result of native iron nanoparticle (npFe0) production within glassy rims that form from sputtering and vaporization. The sizes and abundance of these particles provide information about the relative surface exposure age of a particular grain. In addition, many studies have indicated that composition greatly affects the rate at which optical maturation occurs. Despite our understanding of how npFe0 affects optical signatures, the relative roles of micrometeoroid bombardment and solar wind interactions remains undetermined. To simulate the early effects of weathering by the solar wind and to determine thresholds for optical change with respect to a given mineral phase, we irradiated a fine-grained lunar basalt with 1 keV H+ to a fluence of 6.4 x 1016 H+ per sq.cm. Surface alterations within four phases have been evaluated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that for a given fluence of H+, the extent of damage acquired by each grain was dependent on its composition. No npFe(0) was produced in any of the phases evaluated in this study. These results are consistent with many previous studies conducted using ions of similar energy, but they also provide valuable information about the onset of space weathering and the role of the solar wind during the early stages of optical maturation.

thermally-metamorphosed ordinary chondrite regolith breccias (Monahans 1998, hereafter simply “Monahans” ( 5) and Zag (H3-6)) contain fluid inclusion-bearing halite (NaCl) crystals dated to be ~4.5 billion years old. Thus, compositional data on fluid inclusions in these halites will reveal unique information regarding the origin and activity of aqueous fluids in the early solar system, and especially their interactions with organic mate- rial. Our initial analyses of solid inclusions in Monahans halite has shown the presence of olivine, high- and low- Ca pyroxene, feldspars, magnetite, sulfides, phyllosilicates, zeolites, metal, phosphates and abundant organics. We age of carbon, carbonates and organics in these residues, and low but significant amino acids concentrations in Monahans and Zag halite.

Space weathering alters the surfaces of airless planetary bodies via irradiation from the solar wind and micrometeorite impacts. These processes modify the microstructure, chemical composition, and spectral properties of surface materials, typically resulting in the reddening (increasing reflectance with increasing wavelength), darkening (reducing albedo), and attenuation of characteristic absorption features in reflectance spectra. In lunar samples, these changes in optical properties are driven by the production of reduced nanophase Fe particles (npFe). Our understanding of space weathering has largely been based on data from the Moon and, more recently, near-Earth S-type asteroids. However, the environment at Mercury is significantly different, with the surface experiencing intense solar wind irradiation and higher velocity micrometeorite impacts. Additionally, the composition of Mercury’s surface varies significantly from that of the Moon, including a component with very low albedo known as low reflectance material (LRM) which is enriched with up to 4 wt.% carbon over the local mean. Our understanding of how carbon phases, including graphite, are altered as a result of these processes is limited.

We are using innovative FIB techniques to prepare samples of planetary materials for different types of coordinated analyses using ion microprobes, synchrotron beamlines, and specialized transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. In these cases, the FIB sample preparation is the critical step in enabling these specialized analyses. We discuss several examples below utilizing the FEI Quanta3D instrument at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Trace element analyses utilizing synchrotron x-ray fluorescence. The trace element content of mineral grains in comet dust provides important clues on their formation and processing in the early solar system. We preformed coordinated analyses of a comet dust particle that had been prepared using ultramicrotomy for TEM analysis. Following the TEM analyses, we extracted a 70 nm thick section from a region of the carbon (C) film of the TEM grid, for additional analyses. A carbon ring ~2-3 μm thick was deposited on top of the C film using the FIB. The C film on the outer rim of the ring was milled away using various patterns to uniformly release the stresses on the film, preventing rupture and collapse, and was attached to the micromanipulator needle. We then isolated the ring completely and transferred the section to a silicon sample holder for analysis using the HXN (hard X-ray nanoprobe) beamline at NSLSII at Brookhaven National Lab. Coordinated Analyses of Presolar Grains. Rare sub-m presolar grains that originate in evolved stars and supernovae, occur in primitive astromaterials and are identified by their exotic isotopic compositions. Coordinated analyses of these grains using NanoSIMS, TEM, and other techniques on the same grain is enabled by innovative FIB sample preparation. In order to obtain subsequent isotopic analyses of Mg and Fe, contributions from surrounding grains were minimized. We precisely deposited a protective cap of Pt on top of the grain to preserve the grain of interest and then milled away about 5 μm diameter of the surrounding material. Following the isotopic analyses, the spindle was extracted and thinned to electron transparency for TEM microstructural analyses. In situ heating TEM experiments on lunar samples. We extracted a FIB thin section from Apollo 17 lunar rock 76015. To avoid ion-beam damage, e-beam deposition was used to deposit the first 500 nm of the C strap, followed by ion beam-assisted deposition of ~3 μm carbon. We performed an ex situ lift-out of the section and placed the section on one of the elements of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) - specialized heating substrate and attached the section to the substrate by depositing small C straps with the FIB. The heating chips utilize silicon nitride windows to support the samples and provide uniform heating while enabling TEM imaging. The heating chip was loaded into a Hitachi “Blaze” heating holder and analyzed using a Hitachi HF5000 at the University of Arizona.
