4. Psychological demands in elite Indonesian athletes

Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to understand Indonesian elite athletes' psychological demands, or social pressures on Indonesian elite athletes. Data were generated from a rigorous research design including 37 elite athletes and 9 sports practitioners in Indonesia representing 9 sports. The study utilised an ontological constructivist-interpretive reflexive approach, in-depth data collection methods of semi-structured interviews and photographic elicitation interview (PEI) to generate rich and robust data to explain the complexity and diversity of Indonesian athletes' psychological demands. Reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2019) used as the analytical technique, followed by member reflection process. Three themes illustrated three psychological demands relevant to Indonesian athletes: (1) temporality of athletic career, which consisted of subthemes: (i) relation to frequent movements between province and national status; (ii) vagueness of retirement, and (iii) the degree of exploiting body, including managing the risk of injury; (2) cultural appropriateness, consisting of subthemes: (i) religious negotiation; (ii) body as the social and capital of the family; and (iii) compromise to authority; (3) Interactions with organizational stressors, consisting of subthemes: (i) funding and human resources problems, the overlapping of sport organizations in province and national level; and (ii) athletes as epitome icon, or the pressure for athletes to win medals. The original contributions of this research are the detailed accounts of trends and patterns of Indonesian elite athletes in navigating their social pressures. The significance of this work is that the findings: (a) extend the complementary theory of the transactional approach for stress and coping (Lazarus, 1999); (b) instigate new areas of interdisciplinary research in sport psychology and sociology; (c) exemplify a holistic thinking of an athlete's identity in the sport as a multicultural site; (c) align with the recent global discussion on athletes' mental health, particularly in developing countries; and (d) bridge the gap of theory and practice of sport psychology in Indonesia. The key action and responsibility is to create a more positive climate to support growth and performance attainment through informing career transition assistance and mental health literacy.

Abstract

Visual research method (VRM) is one of the widely used qualitative in social sciences, including in sport and exercise and particularly in the field of sport psychology. Photographic Elicitation Interview (PEI) is visual research involving photo-elicitation to generate interviews, which is still rarely used in sport and exercise research in Indonesia. Due to the dearth of literature and research using PEI in sport psychology, a review and reflections would be suitable to inform briefly about the emergent method. This paper will briefly explain: 1) VRM as a method in sport and exercise psychology research; 2) to inform what and how to utilise PEI as a part of VRM also its ethical considerations and procedures; 3) To inform reflections, challenges and opportunities the use of PEI in the Indonesian context. As conclusion, VRM and PEI are promising methods of qualitative data collection in sport and exercise research in Indonesia.

35. Developing a taxonomy of psychosocial demands of elite athletes in a highly diverse culture.

Abstract

Introduction: Cultural values and the social environment could affect the mental health of elite athletes, but mapping the interaction between cultural and elite athlete activities is challenging. Hence, a solid framework in the form of taxonomy could help to understand the interplay between culture and elite athlete activities. Psychosocial demands are articulated as external social pressure generated from social and cultural factors that are endured by elite athletes, which is believed to enable the understanding of elite athletes' potential stressors, which are connected to cultural values. Problem statement: By developing a taxonomy of psychosocial demands of elite athletes, researchers in sport psychology could investigate how cultural and social environments interact with elite athlete activities, particularly in a highly diverse culture. Approach: This article describes the development of a taxonomy of psychosocial demands using a literature review and cultural praxis paradigm. Material and method: A literature study consisting of four stages of determining criteria, refining the definition of psychosocial demands, classifying the types of psychosocial demands, and drawing the taxonomy of psychosocial demands was conducted. Results: The study resulted in a taxonomy of psychosocial demands consisting of three groups and eight subgroups: 1) personal characteristics inviting psychosocial demands, consist of: 1a) physicality; 1b) Socially stereotyped/stigmatized attributes; 2) performance-related expectancies, consist of: 2a) performance standards; 2b) prescribed mental qualities; 2c) prescribed ethical behavior; and 3) social-dynamic system demands, consist of: 3a) Social support; 3b) team dynamic issues; 3c) social politics and sports industry. Detailed descriptions of each group explained in this paper. The taxonomy has both practical and theoretical implications: it enables sports psychologist to understand potential stressors of an elite athlete derived from their cultural background; and for future research, the taxonomy used as a solid framework to investigate the interplay between culture and elite athlete activities.
