Abstract

The main challenge with membrane bioreactors is fouling, which leads to decreased flux performance and a shortened membrane lifespan. This study aims to provide a solution for the flux recovery and removal of irreversible fouling on Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) membranes without damaging their structure using sulfate radicals. Sulfate radicals are formed via peroxodisulfate precursors that are activated by Fe2+. The membrane flux recovery and irreversible fouling ratio were 88.45-99.04% and 11.60-0.96%, respectively, at operating temperatures of 298-308 K. The PVDF membrane has been tested for microfiltration and washed up to 6 times per cycle. The mechanical properties, XRD, SEM-EDX, and ATR-FTIR characterization of the PVDF membrane after washing with PDS/Fe2+ did not show a negative effect on the PVDF structure. Additionally, the results of the kinetic and thermodynamic studies showed that washing with PDS/Fe2+ inhibited the formation of fouling particles on the membrane surface. Based on this study, sulfate radical oxidants with PDS precursors activated by Fe2+ can be applied as cleaning chemicals for PVDF membranes without damaging their structures.

Abstract

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) deteriorates due to fouling on the membrane pores, which can reduce the membrane performance. To reduce membrane fouling, the addition of inorganic filler can enhance the antifouling properties. This study investigates two different membrane preparation by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and dip coating methods to modify hollow fiber membrane with Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs)-Zeolites used in MBR for industrial wastewater treatment. Performance was evaluated by analyzing the flux of water and wastewater, rejection, water content, and antifouling properties. Characterization result represented the synthesized silver nanoparticles had similar diffraction peak with commercial AgNPs, then the micrograph of AgNPs and zeolites addition membrane showed that the inorganic material had an octahedral shape representing zeolite crystal and irregular shape representing AgNPs. The addition of zeolites and AgNPs resulted in satisfying performance, increased flux, rejection, and antifouling properties.

Abstract

Methylene blue is the most widely used dye in the industry and it is difficult to be degraded by the microorganism. This research aims to investigate the photocatalytic activity and effects of contact time on the photocatalytic degradation rate of methylene blue by TiO2/Zeolite-NaY and TiO2-N/Zeolite-NaY material based on the kinetic study. The Advanced Oxidative Process (AOP) method was used to degrade methylene blue. Furthermore, the AOP is a degradation process that uses semiconductor material such as TiO2 or modification catalyst of TiO2 to be TiO2/Zeolite-NaY and TiO2-N/Zeolite-NaY. The degradation of methylene blue with catalyst TiO2/Zeolite-NaY and TiO2-N/Zeolite-NaY were tested under UV light for 5, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minutes. The result showed that TiO2/Zeolite-NaY and TiO2-N/Zeolite-NaY had an excellent activity for degrading the dye, which reached up to 99% after 20 and 30 minutes reaction, respectively. Also, a kinetic study of methylene blue degradation on TiO2/Zeolite-NaY and TiO2-N/Zeolite-NaY showed the kinetic models were according to pseudo-second-order.

Abstract

Dye is an important compound in the textile industry. The famous dye for coloring of textile is methylene blue. Methylene blue degradation has been difficult when carried out naturally by microorganisms. The advanced oxidative process is a promising method to degrade methylene blue using semiconductor material TiO2 and its modification. The modification catalyst of TiO2 such as TiO2-N, TiO2/zeolite-NaY, and TiO2-N/zeolite-NaY. These materials were synthesized by mixing TiO2 and urea, then followed by impregnation of the mixture to zeolite-NaY as support material. The materials have been synthesized then characterized by XRD, and FTIR. Degradation of methylene blue on the synthesized materials was tested under UV light for 5, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minutes. The results showed that the diffractogram of TiO-N/zeolite-NaY and TiO2/zeolite-Y has a similar specific peak with TiO2 and zeolite-NaY. It indicates that the impregnation process was successful. TiO2/zeolite-NaY and TiO2-N/zeolite-NaY also showed excellent activity for degrading methylene blue, which reached up to 99% for 3 hours of reaction

Abstract

Metal-organic framework (MOF) such as ZIF-8 is the tremendous porous material applied in many fields due to high specific surface area and excellent regularity of pores. One technique to improve the physical properties of ZIF-8 with the formation of a composite between a metal oxide and MOF. ZIF-8 and ZIF-8/Al2O3 were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method with an Al variation of 19%, 38%, and 76%. The ZIF-8/Al2O3 were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and N2 Physisorption. The diffractogram shows that the appearing of ZIF-8’s peak on 2θ = 7.26; 10.41, 12.66, 16.41, and 17.95°. The morphological of ZIF-8 crystals had a cubic shape. Then the ZIF-8/Al2O3 had different shapes with ZIF-8. Based on the FTIR result, the Zn-N peak appears on 420 cm−1, which indicates the bonding between metal and organic ligand for ZIF-8/Al2O3 has an additional spike on 825 cm−1 due to the vibration of Al−O− Al.

Abstract

Hexavalent chromium, Cr (VI), is widely used in electroplating industry. The chromium waste which can be released to the environment should be controlled due to its toxic properties. Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) in combination with adsorption technique as a promising way to treat chromium waste has been developed. The main principle of this technique is converting Cr(VI) ions to Cr(III) ions, then adsorp it on the surface of zeolite Na-Y in MFC system. The Zeolite Na-Y was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The obtained Zeolite Na-Y was characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and N2 physisorption. The performance of MFC for chromium removal from the liquid waste was measured using AAS. This measurement aims to monitor amount of chromium in the liquid waste. The power density of MFC system was also monitored using AVO meters. The XRD pattern of zeolite-Y synthesis result has complied with Zeolite-Y JCPDS standard no. 39-1380. Scanning electron microscope of zeolite-Y formed octahedral crystal which is specific zeolite-Y crystal. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy of zeolite-Y shows of (Si-O-Si) or (O-Si-O) bend vibration at 457-462 cm−1, (Si-O-Al) symmetric stretch vibration at 663,53 cm−1, and (Si-O-Al) asymmetric stretch vibration at 1010-1033.88 cm−1. The higher amount removal of chromium at combination technique 2 for 120 minutes which dramatically increase up to 90.96 % with the power density around 2.5 mW/m2.

9. The MnO2/Zeolite NaY Catalyzed Oxidation of CO Emission in Catalytic Converter System

Abstract

CO emission is one of biggest problem in environmental sector due to increasing number of motorcycle user in every years. CO is poison gas which directly affects on the public health and earth’s atmosphere. The aim of this research to developed catalyst in catalytic converter system to oxidize CO to CO2 by using MnO2/zeolite NaY. Zeolite NaY was synthesized by using hydrothermal method following by wet impregnation to form MnO2/zeolite NaY, then the composite was characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX, N2 physisorption, and catalytic activity oxidation of CO was carried out using 4 tag motorcycle. The XRD result represent zeolite NaY synthetic has similar diffraction peak with zeolite NaY (JCPDS 39-1380), then infrared spectrum exhibit T-O-T at fingerprint area which exhibit vibration of zeolite NaY. Octahedral crystal was successfully observe by using SEM which represent zeolite NaY crystal similar with previous study. N2 physisorp shows that the composite has type IV of isotherm which exhibit the micropore and mesopore was form into material. Then, MnO2/zeolite NaY has good thermal stability as well as catalytic activity for CO oxidation, where the longer reaction time successfully to reduce the concentration of CO. Conversely, CO2 concentration dramatically increase as function of reaction time.
