The recent advent of molecular markers has created a great potential for the understanding of quantitative inheritance. In parallel to rapid developments and improvements in molecular marker technologies, biometrical models have been constructed, refined and generalized for the mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL). However, current models present restricitions in terms of breeding designs to which they apply. In this paper, we develop an approach for the generalization of the mixture model for progeny from a single bi-parental cross of inbred lines. Detailed derivations are given for genetic designs involving populations developed by selfing, i.e., where marker genotypes are obtained from [F.sub.x] (x [greater than or equal to! 2) individuals and where phenotypes are measured on [F.sub.y] (y [greater than or equal to! x) individuals or families. Extensions to designs involving doubled-haploids, backcross-derived individuals and random matings are outlined. The derivations presented here can easily be combined with current QTL mapping approaches.

Exotic maize (Zea mays L.) germplasm, shown to be useful for developing improved temperate cultivars, has remained little used partly because of many inherent shortcomings. Five [F.sub.2] populations, developed from South American and U.S. germplasm, were used to detect favorable factors of exotic origin at quantitative trait loci (QTL) with isozymes and RFLPs. A number of traits of agronomic importance, including grain yield, were measured on [F.sub.2] individuals and/or [F.sub.3] families grown in several environments. Many QTLs, mostly with small effects, were identified. Major QTLs for grain yield and number of ears per plant were located on chromosomes 3 and 6. Stability of QTLs across environments was high. Favorable alleles of exotic origin were found at QTLs for several traits including grain yield and number of ears per plant. Most of these alleles also showed undesirable effects on other traits, however. Nevertheless, the superiority of exotic alleles over adapted alleles was demonstrated clearly at a few QTLs, re-affirming the usefulness of exotic germplasm for temperate maize breeding.

Herein, we report a novel approach for the design of a colorimetric aptasensor, relying on a Dye Salt Aggregation-based Colorimetric Oligonucleotide assay (DYSACO assay). This method is based on the use of an intercalating agent, Nile Blue (NB), whose aggregation capacities (and thus modification of its absorption spectrum) are drastically amplified by adding salts to the working solution. The presence of an aptamer could protect NB from such aggregation process due to its intercalation into double-stranded DNA and/or interaction with nucleobases. In response to the addition of the specific ligand, the competition between NB and the target for binding to the aptamer occurs, resulting in an increase in the dye salt aggregation and then in the blue-to-blank color change of the solution. The proof-of-principle was demonstrated by employing the anti-l-tyrosinamide aptamer and the assay was successfully applied to the trace enantiomer detection, allowing the detection of an enantiomeric impurity down to approximately 2% in a non-racemic sample. Through a reversed mechanism based on the increased capture of NB by DNA upon analyte binding, the sensing platform was further demonstrated for the Hg(II) detection. Water samples of different origin were spiked with Hg(II) analyte at final range concentrations comprised between (0.5-15 μM). An excellent overall recovery of 122 ± 14%; 105 ± 14%; 99 ± 9%; was respectively obtained from river, tap and mineral water, suggesting that the sensor can be used under real sample conditions. Purpose: Annotation of surgical videos is a time-consuming task which requires specific knowledge. In this paper, we present and evaluate a deep learning-based method that includes pre-annotation of the phases and steps in surgical videos and user assistance in the annotation process., Methods: We propose a classification function that automatically detects errors and infers temporal coherence in predictions made by a convolutional neural network. First, we trained three different architectures of neural networks to assess the method on two surgical procedures: cholecystectomy and cataract surgery. The proposed method was then implemented in an annotation software to test its ability to assist surgical video annotation. A user study was conducted to validate our approach, in which participants had to annotate the phases and the steps of a cataract surgery video. The annotation and the completion time were recorded., Results: The participants who used the assistance system were 7% more accurate on the step annotation and 10 min faster than the participants who used the manual system. The results of the questionnaire showed that the assistance system did not disturb the participants and did not complicate the task., Conclusion: The annotation process is a difficult and time-consuming task essential to train deep learning algorithms. In this publication, we propose a method to assist the annotation of surgical workflows which was validated through a user study. The proposed assistance system significantly improved annotation duration and accuracy.

Main Conclusion: In spite of the limited investment in orphan crops, access to new technologies such as bioinformatics and low-cost genotyping opens new doors to modernise their breeding effectively. Innovation in plant breeding is imperative to meet the world's growing demand for staple food and feed crops, and orphan crops can play a significant role in increasing productivity and quality, especially in developing countries. The short breeding history of most orphan crops implies that genetic gain should be achievable through easy-to-implement approaches such as forward breeding for simple traits or introgression of elite alleles at key target trait loci. However, limited financial support and access to sufficient, relevant and reliable phenotypic data continue to pose major challenges in terms of resources and capabilities. Digitalisation of orphan-crop breeding programmes can help not only to improve data quality and management, but also to mitigate data scarcity by allowing data to be accumulated and analysed over time and across teams. Bioinformatics tools and access to technologies such as molecular markers, some of them provided as services via specific platforms, allow breeders to implement modern strategies to improve breeding efficiency. In orphan crops, more marker-trait associations relevant to breeding germplasm are generally needed, but implementing digitalization, marker-based quality control or simple trait screening and introgression will help modernising breeding. Finally, the development of local capacities-of both people and infrastructure-remains a necessity to ensure the sustainable adoption of modern breeding approaches.

Background: In 2007, French authorities changed mandatory BCG vaccination for all children into a strong recommendation to vaccinate only children considered at high risk of tuberculosis. Vaccination coverage (VC) data are insufficient in France. We estimated VC at approximately two months of age and identified socioeconomic factors associated with BCG vaccination., Methods: The Elfe study (Étude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance) included a random sample of about 18 000 children born in 2011 selected at birth from 320 maternity wards from mainland France. Information was collected through questionnaires and telephone interviews conducted approximately two months after delivery. Because BCG recommendations are different in the Paris region (Île-de-France [IDF]) and outside this region, VC was estimated separately in these two regions. We estimated VC for different levels of tuberculosis risk, approached by the geographical origin of the parents. Poisson regression was performed to analyze the association between socioeconomic factors and BCG vaccination status, and results expressed by prevalence ratios (PR)., Results: CV was higher in IDF (59.5%) compared to at-risk children outside IDF (46.7%) (p<0.001). VC in children with two parents from a tuberculosis highly endemic country was 80.5% in IDF and 60.4% outside IDF. In the multivariable model, having one or two parents from a tuberculosis highly endemic country (PR around 1.40) or consulting a private pediatrician (PR around 1.15) or a maternal and child health (MCH) center (PR around 1.40) after leaving the maternity ward were associated with a higher VC, whereas a university educational level in mothers was associated with a lower VC (PR=0.80)., Conclusion: In France, BCG vaccination in infants is performed early after discharge from the maternity ward. A first consultation with a pediatrician or in a MCH center is associated with better vaccination coverage. Background: Since 2011 public concerns about Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination safety and efficacy arose in France. We explored the relevance of using vaccines reimbursement data to assess the impact of those public concerns on vaccination coverage., Methods: We used the Permanent Sample of Beneficiaries which was, at the time of the study, a representative sample of 1/97(th) health insurance beneficiaries of the main Social Security scheme, the General Health Insurance Scheme, covering approximately 77 % of the French resident population. We estimated HPV vaccination coverage among girls born between 1995 and 1999 at their 15(th), 16(th) and 17(th) birthday., Results: The coverage for complete vaccination among 16 years old girls decreased from 26.5 % in the first semester of 2011 to 18.6 % in the first semester of 2014., Conclusions: HPV vaccination coverage was already low in 2011 and continued to decrease thereafter. Vaccines reimbursement data allowed us to reactively monitor the impact of the controversy on vaccination coverage and design counteracting measures.

A number of different marker-assisted selection (MAS) approaches do exist for the improvement of polygenic traits. Results of a marker-assisted backcross (MABC) selection experiment aimed at improving grain yield under drought conditions in tropical maize are presented and compared with alternative MAS strategies. The introgression of favourable alleles at five target regions involved in the expression of yield components and flowering traits increased grain yield and reduced the asynchrony between male and female flowering under water-limited conditions. Eighty-five per cent of the recurrent parent's genotype at non-target loci was recovered in only four generations of MABC by screening large segregating populations (2200 individuals) for three of the four generations. Selected MABC-derived BC(2)F(3) families were crossed with two testers and evaluated under different water regimes. Mean grain yield of MABC-derived hybrids was consistently higher than that of control hybrids (crosses from the recurrent parent to the same two testers as the MABC-derived families) under severe water stress conditions. Under those conditions, the best five MABC-derived hybrids yielded, on average, at least 50% more than control hybrids. Under mild water stress, defined as resulting in <50% yield reduction, no difference was observed between MABC-derived hybrids and the control plants, thus confirming that the genetic regulation for drought tolerance is dependent on stress intensity. MABC conversions involving several target regions are likely to result in partial rather than complete line conversion. Simulations were conducted to assess the utility of such partial conversions, i.e. containing favourable donor alleles at non-target regions, for subsequent phenotypic selection. The results clearly showed that selecting several genotypes (10-20) at each MABC cycle was most efficient. In the light of these results, alternative approaches to MABC are discussed, including recurrent selection, illustrated by an example of improving the adaptation of maize to low temperatures. Given the current approaches for MAS and the choices of marker technologies available now and potential for future developments, the use of MAS techniques in further improving grain yield under abiotic stresses in maize appears very promising.

Voice range profile (VRP) is a well-known vocal test. Usually, it consists of a single diagram based on the whole voice range. When practised separately in each individual laryngeal mechanism, VRP may offer much information on both the relative development of the different mechanisms used by the subject and the extension of the common area between two consecutive mechanisms. We present the results obtained from 42 subjects of both sexes who have different singing technique levels: professional singers, student and amateur singers, as well as subjects without any experience in singing. For each mechanism, the global VRP area and the dynamic range were computed. Results are discussed in relation to sex category and vocal training of subjects. Exploring systematically VRP for each mechanism gives new and valuable information on register managing in singing practice.

The flooding is an extinction process of an emotion or a pulsion through a mechanism of Pavlov of conditioned inhibition. The author does here an experimental study of this process. This study allows to explain the exact flooding mechanism. So we can better understand and better introduce the practical flooding applications in therapeutic as well as in psychopathology.

The amino-terminal end of the glutamine binding protein of E. coli K 12 has been sequenced (40 residues). Homologies with other binding proteins are shown. Likeness is slightly better with the ribose binding protein and with the leucine, isoleucine, valine binding protein.

A mathematical model is proposed which explains some biphasic saturations of Binding Proteins by their substrates through an effect of a competitive inhibition. The inhibitor can be the substrate itself especially when the retention phenomenon is occuring. This model has been verified with two periplasmic Binding Proteins of Escherichia coli: the Glutamine Binding Protein and the Leucine-Isoleucine-Valine Binding Protein. A significant connection is found between experimental results and the hypothesis.
