24. Accountability in practice : issues of power and trust in Glasgow credit unions : a phronetic approach

Abstract

This research examines the effects of the changes taking place within the field of credit unions (CU) in Glasgow. It examines the ways in which competing hierarchical and social accountabilities are implicated in and affected by these changes. In recent decades policy makers in the UK have looked to credit unions to help tackle issues of poverty and social inclusion. However, credit unions in the UK have tended to disappoint in terms of their growth and stability, and there have been notable failures. Some influential parties – including local councils, HM Treasury, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL) – have argued that the way to avoid future failures, achieve a high growth rate, and ultimately meet aspirations in terms of poverty alleviation and social inclusion, is to transform credit unions to implement a more commercialised model. Such a model potentially clashes with the traditions and ethos of some sectors of the credit union community, and thus it faces resistance. The value- rational approach of this research is inspired by the work of Bent Flyvbjerg who provided a modern interpretation of the traditional Greek concept of phronesis and applied it to research with the aim of making social science really matter. Four value-laden questions permeate this research: (1) Where are we going? (2) Who gains and who loses? And by which mechanisms of power? (3) Is this desirable? (4) What should we do? The research analyses developments in the Glasgow credit union (CU) field; it also studies the accountability practices of CUs with a particular focus on a community-based Glasgow CU that has traditions and values which are not easily reconciled with the commercialisation agenda and the demands of modern financial regulatory authorities. The research uses interviews, observations and secondary data sources to answer its research questions. The analysis is classified into both macro and micro levels. On the macro level analysis, the research found that power defines a new reality where accountability has been shifted from people and values to rules and authorities. On the micro level, the analysis shows that neither trust nor accountability work effectively alone; instead, an intelligent integration of trust and accountability is needed to sustain the viability and ethos of the community-based CU.

28. Topical latanoprost solution in combination with microneedling in treatment of segmental vitiligo

Abstract

Background Vitiligo is a depigmenting disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. Latanoprost (LT) is a prostaglandin F2α analog used in the treatment of glaucoma and was found to induce skin pigmentation. Aim This comparative study aims to assess efficiency of topical 0.005% LT solution in combination with microneedling for treatment of segmental vitiligo. Patients and methods The authors addressed 50 patients with segmental vitiligo stable for at least one year divided into two groups in this study: group A included 25 patients treated with topical 0.005% LT solution in combination with microneedling sessions by using dermapen, and group B included 25 patients who were treated with topical 0.005% LT solution alone without microneedling. The response to treatment was evaluated by serial photographs, degree of pigmentation, and vitiligo area scoring index (VASI). All patients were evaluated before the start of the treatment and each month after the end of the treatment. Results The group A, which was treated by combination of topical 0.005% LT ophthalmic solution and microneedling, showed significant improvement in VASI score, whereas group B, which was treated by topical 0.005% LT ophthalmic solution alone without microneedling, showed minimal improvement in VASI score. Conclusion The use of microneedling in combination with using topical LT improves the results of treatment of segmental vitiligo.

37. The Impact of Work Life Quality on Job Burnout (A Field Study on the Petroleum Sector Companies in the Arab Republic of Egypt)

Abstract

The current study aimed at assessing the impact of quality of work life practices on the job burnout of workers in petroleum sector companies in the Arab Republic of Egypt, through the mediating role test to empower workers. By analyzing the questionnaire data that was obtained from a soft sample of (277) individuals from the study sample and to review the results of the study that were obtained. In the following, the researcher analyzed the data that had been obtained from 277 employees at various administrative levels. To analyze the obtained data 28 SPSS and AMOS2 6.have been used, it is one of the popular statistical software. Through this program, a descriptive analysis of the demographic characteristics of the sample was obtained, in addition to testing the study hypotheses, where the following results were reached: The work life quality practices are applied in the organization under study to a medium degree, and the highest dimensions applied were supervisory behavior, job characteristics and physical work environment conditions, and the least applied were compensation and benefits. The presence of the variable of job burnout in the organization under study in a medium degree, and the highest axes were present with a high degree of low personal achievement, and the least presence of them was dulling of feelings. - Regarding the employee empowerment variable, it was found that it is applied to a moderate degree. The results of the study hypotheses test also concluded that: The presence of a significant effect with a statistically significant reverse of the practices of the quality of work life on the job burnout of workers. We find that the most influential dimensions of quality of work life are supervisory behaviour, progress and promotion, and the least influential are after occupational traits. Administrative empowerment mediates the relationship between quality-of-life practices and partial job burnout.

Abstract

A simple and effective approach has been established for the synthesis of a new series of 1,4-dihydropyridin-3,5-dicarbonitriles, hexahydroacridine-1,8-diones, 7,14-dihydro-6H,8H-dichromeno[4,3-b:3′,4′-e]pyridine-6,8-diones, and 1,4,7,8-tetrahydrodipyrazolo[3,4-b:4′,3′-e]pyridines which are linked to phenoxy-N-arylacetamide. The novel products were obtained through the Hantzsch reaction of various 2-(4-formylphenoxy)-N-arylacetamides with the respective 3-aminocrotononitrile or a mixture of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and ammonium acetate. Elemental and spectral data were used to confirm the structures of the newly synthesized compounds. The desired products could not be made by alkylation of the suitable phenol derivatives with 2-chloro-N-phenylacetamide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
