Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are known to exhibit a large piezoresistance (PZR) effect, making them suitable for various sensing applications. Here, we report the results of a PZR investigation on randomly distributed and interconnected vertical silicon nanowire arrays as a pressure sensor. The samples were produced from p-type (100) Si wafers using a silver catalyzed top-down etching process. The piezoresistance response of these SiNW arrays was analyzed by measuring their I-V characteristics under applied uniaxial as well as isostatic pressure. The interconnected SiNWs exhibit increased mechanical stability in comparison with separated or periodic nanowires. The repeatability of the fabrication process and statistical distribution of measurements were also tested on several samples from different batches. A sensing resolution down to roughly 1 mbar pressure was observed with uniaxial force application, and more than two orders of magnitude resistance variation were determined for isostatic pressure below atmospheric pressure., Reykjavík University

Hyperspectral images (HSIs) acquired by hyperspectral imaging sensors contain hundreds of spectral bands. The abundant spectral information provided by an HSI makes it possible to discriminate different materials in a scene. Therefore, HSIs have been widely used in various fields, such as agricultural production, mineral exploration, and environmental protection. However, HSIs are usually corrupted by different noises such as quantization noise, thermal noise, and shot noise, due to the influence of photon effects, atmospheric absorption, and sensor disturbance. Therefore, denoising is an important preprocessing step for HSI analysis and applications. HSI has the low-rank characteristic, which is exploited by representing the spectral vectors of HSI in a lowdimensional subspace. Thus, it is an effective way to use the low-rank characteristic of HSI for HSI denoising. This thesis proposes several low-rank-based denoising methods for HSI to improve HSI applications. The main contributions of the thesis are the following. - Two new low-rank based HSI denoising methods. One is the non-local means lowrank approximation (NLMLRA) method, which uses a Slanted Butterworth function to construct a low-rank approximation for non-local means (NLM) operator. The Slanted Butterworth function is a filter function, that removes the noise in the NLM operator and retains the eigenvalues above a given threshold value to preserve the low-rank charactoristic of HSI. The Chebyshev polynomials is used for NLMRA to improve the practicability and reduce the computational cost. The other is the wavelet-based block low-rank representations (WBBLRR) denoising method. WBBLRR uses 3-D wavelet transform to decompose HSI into different sub-images (approximation ciefficients subimage and detail coefficients sub-images). Each sub-image can be considered as a block, where each block utilizes a low-rank representations model with different regularization parameters to obtain the denoised block. - A new sparse and low-rank based HSI denoising method. This is the spectral-spatial transform-based sparse and low-rank representations (SSWSLRR) method. The proposed method uses both `1 penalty and weighted nuclear norm penalty in the transform domain to exploit the sparse and low-rank characteristics of HSI to remove noise. - Several mixtures of factor analyzers (MFA) low-rank based methods are proposed for HSI denoising and feature extraction. - Four new MFA based HSI denoising methods. MFA is a low-rank probabilistic method. HSIs usually have different classes with different characteristics and cannot be assumed to obey a Gaussian distribution. Thus, the Gaussian mixture model can be used to solve the non-normal distribution problem. MFA uses the Gaussian mixture model to allow a low-rank representation of the Gaussians for different samples of HSI to remove noise. Furthermore, MFA is applied in the wavelet domain to remove noise is also analyzed. In addition, mixed noise is discussed using MFA with local spatial-spectral correlation of HSI. - Six new unsupervised, supervised, and semi-supervised feature extraction methods. All the methods are proposed based MFA to exploit the low-rank representation for HSI. And the methods set different number of layers of MFA to construct the algorithm frameworks and use different samples to train the models. Unsupervised methods only use unlabeled samples to extract features of HSI. Supervised methods only utilize labeled samples to extract features of HSI. Magnetic resonance images (MRIs) enable neuroradiologists to investigate the human brain to look for possible causes of disease. The clinical interpretation of these images is, however, mostly limited to subjective assessment or a rough measurement of the area or volume of brain structures and presence of lesions. Multiple automatic methods have been developed to label different brain structures from MRIs, from which size, shape, and location of these structures and lesions can be extracted. These types of measurements enable researchers to perform comparisons in large scale studies. Multiple conventional whole-brain segmentation methods are based on finding a geometric transformation from MRIs with manually delineated brain structures to a target MRI that will consequently have the corresponding brain structures automatically labeled. These methods have worked very well for transforming labels between subjects and they have been extensively used in brain MRI studies. However, their main disadvantages are: 1) They are very slow (6+ hours for labelling one image), 2) their results are often inaccurate when the brain is deformed, e.g., due to atrophy, and 3) it is not possible to transform brain lesions from one subject to another, since their placement in the brain is variable. Current state-of-the-art brain segmentation methods are often based on deep neural networks (DNNs). DNNs can learn to approximate any function between an input and output given enough training data. After training, the DNNs can be used to analyse images fast and accurately. However, it can be very expensive and time consuming to generate enough training data for DNNs. A DNN trained on one MRI data set often does not work adequately well on another data set where different MRI parameters or scanners are used. Therefore, it would be beneficial to develop DNN methods that minimize the need for manually delineated training data. We have developed novel, automatic methods to label the ventricular system and WM lesions in the brain. Ventricular enlargement and WM lesions are associated with neurodegenerative diseases, e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and adult hydrocephalus. Our method, called SegAE, is the first unsupervised convolutional neural network for simultaneous segmentation of tissues and WM lesions from brain MRIs. SegAE‘s output are images that show the proportion of tissues and WM lesions in each voxel, but labelling WM lesions automatically has thus far been a challenging problem to solve, e.g. due to the variability of lesion load and location, and the inhomogeneous nature of MRI signal intensities within tissues. Furthermore, we use the output from SegAE to make images that have the same contrast irrespective of scanner type and parameters. That is advantageous because one major challenge in automatic medical image analysis is the lack of consistency of results using different data sets. This way we can make use of a DNN trained on manually labelled images from one data set and use it on another where the DNN input is a standardized image of the materials that cause the signal intensities in the MRI sequences. We have validated our methods on various data sets, including the AGES-Reykjavik study, that includes thousands of brain MRIs with a large variability of ventricular volumes and WM lesions. The methods have been compared to state-of-the-art methods and manual delineations by neuroradiologists. Our results indicate that the methods are accurate and robust to different scanners, and variability in brain structure, as well as being significantly faster than conventional methods., Segulómmyndir gera taugaröntgenlæknum kleift að líta inn í heila mannsins í leit að orsökum sjúkdóma. Ókostir þeirra eru hins vegar að: 1) Þær eru mjög hægar (6+ klst að merkja eina mynd), 2) niðurstöður eru oft ónákvæmar þegar heilinn er mikið aflagaður svo sem vegna rýrnunar, 3) ekki er hægt að varpa staðsetningu vefjaskemmda frá einum einstaklingi til annars, þar sem staðsetning þeirra í heilanum getur verið breytileg. Nákvæmustu og hröðustu aðferðir sem til eru í dag byggja á djúpum tauganetum. Tauganet geta lært hvaða fall sem er milli inntaks og úttaks ef næg þjálfunargögn eru fyrir hendi. Eftir þjálfun geta tauganetin greint myndir mjög hratt og nákvæmlega. Hins vegar er mjög dýrt og tímafrekt að útbúa næg þjálfunargögn fyrir tauganet. Oft virkar tauganet sem þjálfað er á einu gagnasafni ekki jafn vel á öðru gagnasafni þar sem öðruvísi púlsaraðir (þ.e. stillingar á segulómtækinu) eru notaðar við myndatöku. Því er til mikils að vinna við þróun tauganeta sem lágmarka þörf á handgerðum þjálfunarmyndum. Við höfum þróað nýstárlegar, sjálfvirkar aðferðir til að merkja heilahólf og hvítavefsbreytingar í heilanum, en þekkt er að stækkun heilahólfa og umfang hvítavefsbreytinga eru tengd heilahrörnunarsjúkdómum, m.a. Alzheimerssjúkdómi, æðaheilabilun og fullorðinsvatnshöfði. Aðferðin okkar kallast SegAE, en hún er fyrsta földunartauganetið (e. Convolutional Neural Network) sem þjálfað er á óstýrðan hátt (e. unsupervised) til þess að finna vefi og hvítavefsbreytingar í heila út frá segulómmyndum. Úttak SegAE eru myndir sem sýna hlutfall vefja og hvítavefsbreytinga í hverjum myndpunkti en að merkja hvítavefsbreytingar sjálfvirkt hefur hingað til reynst erfitt vandamál að leysa m.a. vegna þess að stærð og staðsetning hvítavefsbreytinga er mjög breytileg milli einstaklinga og birtustig vefja er ekki staðlað í segulómmyndum. Auk þess notum við úttak SegAE til þess að búa til staðlaða mynd af heilanum óháð gerð og stillingum segulómtækja. Þetta er mikill kostur þar sem ein helsta áskorun læknisfræðilegrar myndgreiningar í dag er ósamræmi niðurstaðna á milli tækja. Þannig getum við tekið tauganet sem þjálfað er á handgerðum myndum úr einu gagnasafni og notað það á öðru þar sem inntakið í tauganetið eru staðlaðar myndir af þeim efnum sem orsaka birtuskil myndaraða í segulómun. Við höfum prófað aðferðirnar á mismunandi gagnasöfnum, þ.á.m. Öldrunarrannsókn Hjartaverndar, sem inniheldur þúsundir heilamynda af einstaklingum með mikinn breytileika m.t.t. heilahólfa og hvítavefsbreytinga. Aðferðirnar hafa verið bornar saman við aðferðir í fremstu röð auk handmerktra mynda, sem merktar hafa verið af taugaröntgenlæknum. We consider core–shell nanowires with prismatic geometry contacted with two or more superconductors in the presence of a magnetic field applied parallel to the wire. In this geometry, the lowest energy states are localized on the outer edges of the shell, which strongly inhibits the orbital effects of the longitudinal magnetic field that are detrimental to Majorana physics. Using a tight-binding model of coupled parallel chains, we calculate the topological phase diagram of the hybrid system in the presence of non-vanishing transverse potentials and finite relative phases between the parent superconductors. We show that having finite relative phases strongly enhances the stability of the induced topological superconductivity over a significant range of chemical potentials and reduces the value of the critical field associated with the topological quantum phase transition., This work was partially financed by the research funds of Reykjavik University and by the Icelandic Research Fund. Maintaining small physical dimensions of antenna structures is an important consideration for contemporary wireless communication systems. Typically, antenna miniaturization is achieved through various topological modifications of the basic antenna geometries. The modifications can be applied to the ground plane, the feed line, and/or antenna radiator. Unfortunately, various topology alteration options are normally reported on a case-to-case basis. The literature is lacking systematic investigations or comparisons of different modification methods and their effects on antenna miniaturization rate as well as electrical performance. Another critical issue—apart from setting up the antenna topology—is a proper adjustment of geometry parameters of the structure so that the optimum design can be identified. Majority of researchers utilize experience-driven parameter sweeping which typically yields designs that are acceptable, but definitely not optimal. Furthermore, in many of the cases, the authors provide a cooperative progression before and after topological modifications that generally lead to a certain reduction of the antenna size, however, with appropriate parameter adjustment missing. Consequently, suitability of particular modifications in the miniaturization context is not conclusively assessed. In order to carry out such an assessment in a reliable manner, identification of the truly optimum design is necessary. This requires rigorous numerical optimization of all antenna parameters (especially in the case of complex antenna topologies) with the primary objective being size reduction, and supplementary constraints imposed on selected electrical or field characteristics. This thesis is an attempt to carry out systematic investigations concerning the relevance of geometry modifications in the context of wideband antenna miniaturization. The studies are carried out based on selected benchmark sets of wideband antennas. In order to ensure a fair comparison, all geometry parameters are rigorously tuned through EM-driven optimization to obtain the minimum footprint while maintaining acceptable electrical performance. The results demonstrate that it is possible to conclusively distinguish certain classes of topology alterations that are generally advantageous in the context of size reduction, as well as quantify the benefits of modifications applied to various parts of the antenna structure, e.g., with feed line modifications being more efficient than the ground plane and radiator ones. Several counterexamples have been discussed as well, indicating that certain modifications can be counterproductive when introduced ad hoc and without proper parameter tuning. The results of these investigations have been utilized to design several instances of novel compact wideband antennas with the focus on isolation improvement and overall antenna size reduction in multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems. Experimental validations confirming the numerical findings are also provided. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the presented study is the first systematic investigation of this kind in the literature and can be considered a step towards the development of better, low-cost, and more compact antennas for wireless communication systems., Fyrir þráðlaus fjarskiptakerfi er mikilvægt að tryggja að loftnet séu lítil að umfangi. Fyrir vikið er erfitt að meta til hlítar ávinning af mismunandi formbreytingum. Til þess að framkvæma slíkt mat með áreiðanlegum hætti er nauðsynlegt að geta metið bestu hönnunarútfærslu nákvæmlega. Þetta kallar á ítarlega tölulega bestun allra stika sem lýsa loftnetinu (einkum fyrir loftnet flókinnar lögunnar) þar sem aðalmarkmkið bestunar er smækkun en skorður eru settar af raffræðilegum eiginleikum. Í þessari ritgerð er leitast við að kerfisbundna rannsókn á mikilvægi formbreytingna í tengslum við smækkun bandbreiðra loftneta. Rannsóknin byggir á völdum söfnum viðmiðunarloftneta. Publisher's version.(útgefin grein), Fabrication and sensor application of a simple plasmonic structure is described in this paper. The sensor element consists of nano-patterned gold film brought about from two-dimensional periodic photoresist templates created by holographic laser interference lithography. Reflectance spectroscopy revealed that the sensor exhibits significant refractive index sensitivity. A linear relationship between shifts in plasmonic resonances and changes in the refractive index were demonstrated. The sensor has a bulk sensitivity (SB) of 880 nm/refractive index unit and work under normal incidence conditions. This sensitivity exceeded that of many common types of plasmonic sensors with more intricate structures. A modeled spectral response was used to study the effect of its geometrical dimensions on plasmonic behavior. This article is part of the Thematic Series "Topological materials"., In this paper we consider charge current generated by maintaining a temperature difference over a nanowire at zero voltage bias. For topological insulator nanowires in a perpendicular magnetic field the current can change sign as the temperature of one end is increased. Here we study how this thermoelectric current sign reversal depends on the magnetic field and how impurities affect the size of the thermoelectric current. We consider both scalar and magnetic impurities and show that their influence on the current are quite similar, although the magnetic impurities seem to be more effective in reducing the effect.
