MRSA was detected in 8.24% of patients, VRE in 17.67%, ESBL Enterobacterales in 25.85%, and CPE in 6.13%. MDR/XDR-AB was found in 1.59% and MDR/XDR-PA in 1.91% of patients. The rates of carriage increased between 2015 and 2019 for MRSA (7.23– 7.6%), VRE (9– 16.68%), CPE (1.15– 6.77%), MDR/XDR-PA (1.15– 1.91%), and MDR/XDR-AB (1.15– 2.04%). OXA-48-type carbapenemase was predominant in Klebsiella pneumoniae (68.62%) and Escherichia coli (89.47%). CPE bacteria other than Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli identified in our study carried mostly metallo-beta-lactamase (n = 28, 84.85%).Conclusion: In this study, 37% of the unique patients screened over five years were found to be MDRO carriers. The proportion of VRE and CPE rectal carriers increased significantly between 2015 and 2019. Introduction: Invasive fungal infections have stood as an important research subject for the past 20 years, being considered as a crucial effect of advancing healthcare services. Low identification rates of invasive fungal infections in blood cultures and low sensibility of biomarkers determine empiric treatments which lead to a change in epidemiological data and antifungal susceptibility. The aim: The epidemiological evaluation of invasive fungal infections and the assessment of antifungal resistance related to this condition. Methods and material: An “antifungal stewardship” retrospective study was developed between January 2010 and April 2016. An epidemiological analysis was performed on 79 cases with proven invasive fungal infections in bloodstream, catheter, and cerebrospinal fluid. We considered: age, gender, HIV status, place of residence, and first option in medical practice of antifungal treatment. The laboratory analysis was performed by the Microbiology Laboratory at “Prof. Dr. Matei Bals” National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Bucharest. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC’s) of 15 isolates were identified using colorimetric micro broth dilution panel YEASTONE ®YO10 and compared with susceptibilities obtained by VITEK2®C system. Candida parapsilosis ATCC 22019 was used as reference. Results: The incidence of invasive fungal infections was 3.7 on 1000 hospitalized patients. The age of the study population ranged between 12 and 83 years, and most were male (59%). The majority of subjects were from an urban area (84%), and 27% of them were HIV positive. The results obtained in VITEK2C® were similar with those from YEASTONE® YO10 for fluconazole, voriconazole, amphotericin B (100%), without any minor, major or very major errors. The fluconazole was the first option of treatment, followed by voriconazole, caspofungin, anidulafungin. In 37% of cases the first treatment option was replaced with a secondary antifungal therapy accordingly with antifungal breakpoints obtained by Vitek ®. Conclusions: No rates of resistance to fluconazole, amphotericin B, voriconazole were obtained. Fluconazole was the major first line antifungal therapy. Children’s animated films play an important role in shaping children’s perceptions of social and cultural values, including tolerance and religious moderation. This study aimed to understand how messages about religious tolerance and moderation are communicated through symbols, scenes, and character interactions in the Upin & Ipin series. This study used a qualitative approach with a visual discourse analysis method to examine the visual representation in the series. The data analysis technique involved observing scenes that show interreligious interactions, religious celebrations, and respectful behavior between characters with different cultural and religious backgrounds. Each scene was analyzed based on the visual and narrative context to identify messages of religious moderation. Data were analyzed using descriptive coding and thematic analysis to find patterns of visual depictions of religious moderation. The results showed that Upin & Ipin series consistently displays the values ​​of religious moderation through harmonious characters in participating in religious celebrations. This visual message emphasizes the importance of mutual respect in a multicultural society. This study implies that children’s media, especially cartoon film, can be used to teach the values ​​of religious moderation and tolerance from an early age.

In recent years Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has represented a serious public health issue, mainly due to the global spread of the hypervirulent strain NAP1/027/BI. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the utility of a PCR coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) commercial assay for the detection of C. difficile virulence markers. Non-duplicative C. difficile isolates from patients with CDI diagnosed in a tertiary level hospital from Bucharest were tested for toxin A, toxin B, binary toxin genes and deletion in tcdC gene using PCR/capillary gel electrophoresis and PCR/ESI-MS. The study analysed 45 non-duplicative isolates, 33 strains (73.3%) belonging to ribotype 027. The concordance between PCR/capillary gel electrophoresis and PCR/ESI-MS was 100% for toxin A gene, 97.8% for toxin B gene, 91.1% for binary toxin subunit A gene and 95.6% for binary toxin subunit B gene. The general concordance for the complete panel of markers was 88.9% but was 100% for ribotype 027 isolates. PCR/ESI-MS might be a valid method for the detection of C. difficile virulence markers, including binary toxin.

Introducere: Infecţiile produse de Enterobacteriaceae producătoare de carbapenemaze sunt tot mai frecvent întâlnite în practica medicală şi limitează serios antibioticoterapia. Am evaluat emergenţa enterobacteriilor rezistente la carbapeneme din tulpinile izolate de la pacienţii internaţi în Institutul Naţional de Boli Infecţioase (INBI) din Bucureşti şi identificarea diferitelor tipuri de carbapenemaze, utilizând metode fenotipice.

Listeria monocytogenes are o distribuţie ubiquitară în natură şi poate contamina produsele alimentare de origine animală, provocând infecţii severe la om. Până în prezent există foarte puține date cu privire la profilurile de rezistenţă ale tulpinilor circulante în România. Scopul acestui studiu a fost determinarea pattern-urilor de rezistenţă la antibiotice ale unor tulpini de L. monocytogenes (n=37) izolate din produse alimentare de origine animală şi din probe clinice. Probele din alimente (carne şi produse lactate), au fost colectate în perioada 2009-2013. Probele clinice au fost recoltate de la pacienţi cu septicemie, meningită/meningo-encefalită, cazuri de avort spontan şi nou-născuţi, spitalizaţi în perioada Aprilie 2010 - Aprilie 2013 în trei Instituţii Medicale din Bucureşti: Spitalul Elias, Spitalul Victor Babes si Institutul Naţional de Boli Infecţioase (INBI) Matei Bals. Toate tulpinile testate au prezentat rezistenţă la cefalosporine şi acidul nalidixic; o tulpină izolată din melci fierţi a fost rezistentă la Trimetoprim/sulfametoxazol. Rezistenţa unora dintre tulpinile analizate la ampicilina, antibiotic de elecţie pentru terapia infecţiilor cauzate de L. monocytogenes, subliniază necesitatea testării in vitro a sensibilitatii la antibiotice a fiecarui izolat clinic pentru a stabili eficienţa diferitelor antibiotice, precum şi a unor studii epidemiologice extinse în scopul stabilirii profilurilor de rezistenţă ale tulpinilor de L. monocytogenes circulante în ţara noastră.

Introduction Although sexual health has been holistically defined to include sexual satisfaction, it has been largely absent in health services and sexual and reproductive health and rights programmes in many parts of the world. We propose sexual satisfaction as a useful indicator, as one of the proxy measures for sexual health and well-being and as a component of well-being in general.Methods The Sialon II project is a multicentre biological and behavioural cross-sectional community-based survey implemented across 13 European cities during 2013–2014 among men who have sex with men. Sexual satisfaction was explored using one single item: ‘How satisfied are you with your sex life?’ A multivariable multilevel logistic random-intercept model was estimated to identify factors associated with reporting positive sexual satisfaction versus negative sexual satisfaction.Results Age, the number of partners and self-reported HIV status were not significantly associated with sexual satisfaction in the multivariate model. Participants reporting an insertive role or reported both an insertive and receptive role during the last anal intercourse were more likely to be sexually satisfied, compared with a receptive role. Participants reporting anal intercourse with a condom were more likely to be satisfied than those declaring no anal intercourse in the last 6 months, but no significant association was found compared with anal intercourse without condom. Knowledge of HIV-serostatus concordance with the last sexual partner was positively correlated with sexual satisfaction. Having had sexual intercourse with non-steady partners only in the last 6 months was negatively correlated. The more positive participants perceived their work/school, parents and friends/acquaintances’ attitudes towards gay or bisexual persons, the higher the odds they were satisfied with their sexual life.Conclusion Using a single item on sexual satisfaction in a bio-behavioural study, our analysis has shown that it is associated with individual, interpersonal and social/structural factors and has proven its usefulness as a sexual health indicator among men who have sex with men.

A total of 11 species belonging to 10 genera, 3 subfamilies with a total of 133 individual litter ants were collected at the Lembah Harau Nature Tourism Park. The results showed that the ecosystem of the Lembah Harau Natural Tourism Park tends to be stable. This is indicated by the index of ant diversity in the natural habitat of 0.98 which is low, while in the disturbed habitat it is 1.83, which is classified as moderate. as well as the dominance index in natural and disturbed habitats, namely 0.56 and 0.18 so that it can be concluded that no species dominates in these two habitats

Permasalahan yang dialami Desa Sukaraja Baru Kecamatan Indralaya Selatan Kabupaten Ogan Ilir adalah keterbatasan dalam memasarkan produksi bibit buah yang dihasilkan turun temurun. Padahal produksi pembudidayaan bibit buah yang dilakukan petani Desa Sukaraja Baru ini sangat bervarisasi. Beberapa jenis bibit buah dibudidayakan, seperti buah jeruk kunci, kelengkeng, jambu air, durian dan lainnya. Namun, sangat disayangkan dengan aset yang sangat besar ini masih kurang diperhatikan atau tidak diketahui oleh masyarakat umum khususnya Sumatera Selatan. Hal ini dikarenakan kurangnya promosi atau penyebaran informasi sentra bibit buah ini. Karena itu, tujuan kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan petani dalam memasarkan pembiibitan buah yang dihasilkan. Metode pelaksanaann pada pendampingan ini melalui penyuluhan dan pelatihan yang bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kemampuan para petani. Hasil kegiatan pelatihan ini menunjukkan pengetahuan petani memahami manfaat media sosial sebagai alternatif promosi produksi bibit buah. Selain itu, petani juga mendapatkan pengalaman membuat konten untuk media sosial, seperti Instagram maupun Facebook.

The rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) has resulted in limited treatment options and poorer outcomes for patients. The objective of this study was to analyze the overall antibiotic resistance trends and distribution for pathogens identified in urine samples at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases “Prof. Dr. Matei Balș” from Bucharest, Romania, over a 5-year period. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using automatic systems and the disk diffusion method. ESBL- and carbapenemases-producing strains were identified using immunochromatography tests, and ROSCO Diagnostica kits were used for definitive confirmation. All results were interpreted according to EUCAST clinical breakpoints. Gram-negative rods (GNR) had overall resistance rates higher than 50% for penicillin and 40% for 3rd- and 4th-generation cephalosporins. Escherichia coli resistance to fosfomycin (3%) and nitrofurantoin (2%) remains low, and 33.30% of E. coli, 48% of Klebsiella spp., and 37% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR). All Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were MDR by the last year of the study. For Gram-positive cocci (GPC), 37% of all Enterococcus faecium strains and 2% of Enterococcus faecalis were vancomycin-resistant (VRE). E. coli’s incidence in UTIs’ etiology is on a downward trend. The incidence of Klebsiella spp. and GPCs is rising. Antibiotic stewardship strategies should be implemented after carefully considering regional variations in etiology and resistance trends.

Background and Objectives: Stroke survivors commonly experience cognitive deficits, which significantly impact their quality of life. Integrating modern technologies like eye tracking into cognitive assessments can provide objective and non-intrusive measurements. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the cognitive and visual processing capabilities of stroke patients using eye-tracking metrics and psychological evaluations. A cohort of 84 ischemic stroke patients from the N-PEP-12 clinical study was selected for secondary analysis, based on the availability of eye-tracking data collected during a visual search task using an adapted Trail Making Test. Standardized cognitive assessments, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and digit span tasks, were also conducted. Results: Correlation analyses revealed some notable relationships between eye-tracking metrics and cognitive measures, such as a positive correlation between Symbol Search performance and the number of fixations. Anxiety levels were found to be positively correlated with first fixation duration, while longer first fixation durations were associated with poorer cognitive performance. However, most correlations were not statistically significant. Nonparametric ANOVA showed no significant differences in fixation metrics across the visits. Conclusions: These findings suggest a complex relationship between cognitive status, gaze fixation behavior, and psychological well-being in stroke patients. Further research with larger sample sizes and analysis of saccadic eye movements is needed to better understand these relationships and inform effective interventions for stroke rehabilitation.

Infections in severe burns and their etiology are and will remain a big concern for the medical field. The multi-drug resistant strains of bacteria are a challenge of today’s medicine. The aim of our study was to identify the etiological spectrum of bacterial infections in severe burn patients in Romania and their multi-drug resistant patterns. We performed a prospective study that included 202 adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Clinical Emergency Hospital of Plastic, Reconstructive Surgery and Burns, Bucharest, Romania (CEHPRSB), from 1 October 2018 to 1 April 2022, a period which includes the first 2 years of the outbreak of COVID-19. From each patient, wound swabs, endotracheal aspirates, blood for blood culture, and urine were collected. The most frequently isolated bacterium was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (39%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (12%), Klebsiella spp. (11%), and Acinetobacter baumannii (9%). More than 90% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii were MDR, regardless of the clinical specimen from which they were isolated.

The multiplex PCR assay can be a helpful diagnostic tool for patients with bacteremia. Herein, we assessed the impact of a Blood Culture Identification Panel (BCID) on both the diagnosis and treatment of patients with bacteremia. We performed a retrospective study using laboratory and clinical data to evaluate the impact of syndromic testing using a multiplex PCR testing system (BioFire® FilmArray) for the management of patients with bloodstream infections. BCID detected the pathogen in 102 (87.9%) samples out of the 116 positive blood cultures tested. The average time from the blood culture collection to the communication of the molecular test result was 23.93 h (range: 10.67–69.27 h). The main pathogen detected was Klebsiella pneumoniae (17.6%). The antimicrobial therapy was changed in accordance with the BCID results in 28 (40.6%) out of the 69 cases, wherein the treatment could have been theoretically adjusted. This allowed the adjustment of the therapy to be performed 1305.1 h faster than it would have been possible if conventional diagnostic methods had been used; this was the case for only 35.1% of the time gained if treatment was adjusted for all patients with positive BCID. Thus, although molecular tests can make a difference in the management of bloodstream infections, there is room for improvement in the clinical application of BCID results.

This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from different pathological samples processed in the Microbiology Laboratory of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases “Prof. Dr. Matei Balș”, Romania, between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2022, aiming to establish the ratio of methicillin-resistant to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains and the antibiotic resistance pattern of isolated microorganisms. The data of isolates originating from routine diagnostic tasks were analyzed retrospectively using laboratory data from the microbiology department. Up to 39.11% of Staphylococcus aureus strains were resistant to oxacillin (MRSA), with 49.97% resistance to erythromycin and 36.06% inducible resistance to clindamycin. Resistance rates to ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole were 9.98%, 5.38%, 5.95%, and 0.96%, respectively. There was no resistance to vancomycin. Between 2017 and 2022, the percentage of MRSA strains decreased from 41.71% to 33.63%, sharply increasing to 42.42% in 2021 (the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the percentage of strains isolated from lower respiratory tract infections was higher than that of strains isolated from wounds or blood, as in previous years). This study showed a high percentage of MRSA strains (39.11% overall) with a higher proportion of these strains isolated from the blood (42.49%) compared to other clinical specimens.

Vehicle traffic pollution requires complex physicochemical analysis besides emission level measuring. The current study is focused on two campaigns of emissions measurements held in May and September 2019 in Alba Iulia City, Romania. There was found a significant excess of PM2.5 for all measuring points and PM10 for the most circulated points during May, along with significant VOC and CO2 emissions. September measurements reveal threshold excess for all PM along with increased values for VOC and CO2 emissions. These are the consequences of the complex environmental interaction of the traffic. Street dust and air-suspended particle samples were collected and analyzed to evidence the PM2.5 and PM10 sources. Physicochemical investigation reveals highly mineralized particulate matter: PM2.5 fractions within air-suspended particle samples predominantly contain Muscovite, Kaolinite, and traces of Quartz and Calcite, while PM10 fractions within air-suspended particle samples predominantly contain Quartz and Calcite. These mineral fractions originate in street dust and are suspended in the atmosphere due to the vehicles’ circulation. A significant amount of soot was found as small micro-sized clusters in PM2.5 and fine micro-spots attached over PM10 particles, as observed by Mineralogical Optical Microscopy (MOM) and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). GC-MS analysis found over 53 volatile compounds on the investigated floating particles that are related to the combustion gases, such as saturated alkanes, cycloalkanes, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons. It proves a VOC contamination of the measured particulate matters that make them more hazardous for the health. Viable strategies for vehicle traffic-related pollutants mitigation would be reducing the street dust occurrence and usage of modern catalyst filters of the combustion gas exhausting system.

Dacian civilization flourished on the actual territory of Romania during the Late Iron Age and had its peak from the first century BC to the first century AD. They had intensive relations with Hellenistic and Roman civilizations. Therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the origin of some widely spread artifacts discovered in the Dacian archeological sites. The present research is focused on two bronze artifacts (a bronze coin and a mirror fragment) found in the Alun-Piatra Rosie site and a silver coin found in the Ardeu site. Artifacts were investigated with nondestructive methods such as SEM-EDX for microstructural and elemental characterization, and the crystalline phases were investigated using XRD. Bronze coin proves to be an Istrian issue having an elemental composition of 75.0% Cu, 20.8% Sn, and 4.1% Pb, which corresponds to a structure of Cu grains mixed with Cu5.6Sn grains. The bronze mirror fragment has an elemental composition of 52.3% Cu and 47.7% Sn, which corresponds to a structure containing grains of Cu6Sn5 mixed with grains of Cu41Sn11. It has a smooth surface that was investigated with AFM microscopy, which evidences a Ra roughness of 51 nm for the patina surface and 33.7 nm for the clean metal surface, proving the high quality of the original mirror luster of the artifact. The silver coin was identified as a Radulesti–Hunedoara type meaning that it was produced in local Dacian metallurgic workshops. It has an elemental composition of 63.1% Ag, 25.3% Sn, 7.8% Cu, and small traces of P and Fe, which corresponds to a structure of Ag grains and Ag3Sn grains. Silver coins show that Dacians uses Sn as alloying element in their metallurgic workshops. Istrian bronze coin proves to be typical for Hellenistic or Roman bronze type with Sn content no more than 25% Sn. The bronze mirror fragment has an unusual composition that might be a result of al local metal charge elaboration with several Hellenistic and Roman bronze pieces as raw material and an extra Sn addition during the melting process. This material facilitates the polishing properties of the active surface that has a very low roughness even after 2000 years of ground resting and adherent oxides patina.

Aims: To investigate the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection in Romanian hospitals. Methods: A survey was conducted at nine hospitals throughout Romania between November 2013 and February 2014. Results: The survey identified 393 patients with Clostridium difficile infection. The median age was 67 years (range: 2-94 years); 56% of patients were aged >65 years. The mean prevalence of Clostridium difficile infection was 5.2 cases per 10.000 patient-days. The highest prevalences were 24.9 and 20 per 10.000 patient-days in hospitals specializing in gastroenterology and infectious diseases, respectively. Clostridium difficile infections were health care-associated in 70.5% patients and community-acquired in 10.2%. The origin was not determined in 19.3%. Clostridium difficile infection was severe in 12.3% of patients, and the in-hospital all-cause mortality was 8.8%. Polymerase chain reaction ribotype 027 had the highest prevalence in all participating hospitals and represented 82.6% of the total ribotyped isolates. The minimum inhibitory concentration of moxifloxacin was >4 μg/mL for 59 of 80 tested isolates (73.8%). This study reports the identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the phenolic composition for these medicinal plants: lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), and elderflower (Sambucus nigra). The HS-SPME-GC-MS hyphenated technique was used to investigate the volatiles from the three plants in fresh and dried forms. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation technique, followed by GCMS analysis. Additionally, HPLC-UV/VIS detection was used to identify the phenolic compounds of these plants. The majority compounds identified in the fresh, dried and oil of lemon balm were Z-beta-ocimene, citronellal, citronellol, b-caryophyllene, (E)-citral, (Z)-citral and geraniol respectively. The aerial part of lavender contains mainly linalool, linalyl acetate, beta-myrcene, trans-betaocimene, lavandulyl acetate and caryophyllene. The most compounds identified in the fresh flowers of elderflower were linalool, cis-beta-ocimene, linalool oxide (II) pyran, cis-3-hexenyl isovalerate, while in the dry flowers the majority compounds were linalool oxide (II) pyran, cis-3-hexenyl isovalerate and hexenyl tiglate. The essential oil was rich in n-hexadecanoic acid, linoleic acid, and heneicosane. Majority phenolic compounds identified in the analysed species were vanillic, sinapic, ferulic, and p-coumaric acids, while the predominant flavonoids were rutin, quercetin and epicatechin. MEEREB is an inter-regional network of countries from North Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia that work together with the aim of improving rabies control and prevention at local, regional and global level. MEEREB members met for the third time in 2015 in France (Lyon) to review the current rabies situation within the network and to discuss the way forward the prospect of a One Health approach against rabies. Dogs were the main vector of transmission in all MEEREB countries except for Croatia and Serbia where foxes represented the primary source. The number of rabies animal cases reported in 2014 varied substantially between countries with Ukraine reporting the highest number of animal cases. Human cases still occur in North Africa and all Middle East and Eurasian countries while no cases of human rabies were reported in Croatia, Serbia and Romania, although cases of rabies were identified in both dogs and foxes in 2014. Participants concluded that MEEREB can act as a think-tank where countries can share data, information, experiences and best practices to jointly address challenges in rabies control and prevention. They called for elimination of dog-transmitted rabies through vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin stockpiles and implementation of a One Health approach to achieve rabies’s eradication. Ferrous particles are usually found in atmospheric particulate matters due to the cars chassis oxidation. These particles are able forming conglomerates with the other mineral particles. Thus, the investigated carwash slurry (CS) reveals a high mineralized composition dominated by Quartz, Calcite and clay minerals with significant amount of iron hydroxides. We found some unusual bigger particles of ferrous conglomerate (FC) into the CS sample. XRD and mineralogical microscopy (MOM) reveal that FC sample is formed by a nanostructured mixture of 56 wt.% Calcite and 44 wt.% Goethite. SEM images and EDS spectra reveal submicron particles within the FC structure with a dense mixture of Ca and Fe. FTIR investigation reveal strong absorption bands for goethite and very weak ones for Lepidocrocite within the FC sample. The results indicates that the conglomerate weas formed on the car chassis rust by wet partial dissolution of calcite that locally forms Ca(OH)2 which further is re-crystallized as calcite due to the CO2 from the combustion gases. Fine crystallites of iron hydroxides are embedded into the re-crystallized calcite. In conclusion, the magnetic selection is recommended for the ferrous conglomerate particles removal from CS to be used as natural coverage for of urban dump sites rehabilitation. Abstract Background Globally, the HIV epidemic continues to represent a pressing public health issue in Europe and elsewhere. There is an emerging and progressively urgent need to harmonise HIV and STI behavioural surveillance among MSM across European countries through the adoption of common indicators, as well as the development of trend analysis in order to monitor the HIV-STI epidemic over time. The Sialon II project protocols have been elaborated for the purpose of implementing a large-scale bio-behavioural survey among MSM in Europe in line with a Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS) approach. Methods/Design Sialon II is a multi-centre biological and behavioural cross-sectional survey carried out across 13 European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK) in community settings. A total of 4,966 MSM were enrolled in the study (3,661 participants in the TLS survey, 1,305 participants in the RDS survey). Three distinct components are foreseen in the study protocols: first, a preliminary formative research in each participating country. Second, collection of primary data using two sampling methods designed specifically for ‘hard-to-reach’ populations, namely Time Location Sampling (TLS) and Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS). Third, implementation of a targeted HIV/STI prevention campaign in the broader context of the data collection. Discussion Through the implementation of combined and targeted prevention complemented by meaningful surveillance among MSM, Sialon II represents a unique opportunity to pilot a bio-behavioural survey in community settings in line with the SGSS approach in a large number of EU countries. Data generated through this survey will not only provide a valuable snapshot of the HIV epidemic in MSM but will also offer an important trend analysis of the epidemiology of HIV and other STIs over time across Europe. Therefore, the Sialon II protocol and findings are likely to contribute significantly to increasing the comparability of data in EU countries through the use of common indicators and in contributing to the development of effective public health strategies and policies in areas of high need.

The article discusses the urgent need to address the healthcare crisis in Europe, emphasizing the challenges faced by the health and care workforce due to factors like an aging population, chronic illnesses, and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Topics include staff shortages, mental health strain, burnout, and violence against healthcare workers.

Objectives: We analysed the distribution of vaccine and non-vaccine Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes and the antimicrobial susceptibility of pneumococcal strains isolated from healthy Romanian children. Methods: A multi-centre cross-sectional study was performed in four counties to evaluate carried strains of S. pneumoniae isolated from 2000 children aged 0–5 years. Results: S. pneumoniae carriage was detected in 25.25% of the tested children. Carriage increased from 16.7% among infants to 29.4% in 3–5-year-old children (p 0.064 mg/l were recorded in 71.6%, but the penicillin MIC was >2 mg/l for only 8.4% of tested isolates. Conclusions: In Romanian children, the majority of carried S. pneumoniae isolates are vaccine serotypes. The isolates with MICs defining macrolide resistance were very frequent, as well as the isolates with MICs defining penicillin resistance in the case of meningitis or penicillin dose-dependent susceptibility for other infections, mainly for the strains belonging to PCV13 serotypes. The implementation of PCV13 within the Romanian national immunization programme could reduce the circulation of these strains with higher macrolide and/or penicillin MICs.
