Summary: Background: The substantial and increasing global burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) underscores the imperative to enhance implementation and utilization of effective CRC screening offers. Therefore, we examined the lifetime and up-to-date use of CRC screening tests across various countries, and described utilization trends over time. Methods: We conducted a systematic review on the extent and recent trends of utilization of CRC screening tests among people 45 years or older in different countries around the globe. PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Embase electronic databases were screened for eligible studies from inception to June 30, 2024. The study protocol was registered with international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42023391344). Findings: A total of 50 studies, based on nationally-representative data, were finally included - 27 from the United States (US) and 23 from other countries. The overall utilization of CRC screening has steadily increased over time in many countries, reaching 74.9% in Denmark in 2018–2020, 64% in Korea in 2020, and 72% in the US in 2021. Nevertheless, the utilization rates remain far below the national or continental targets in most countries. In contrast to European and Asian countries, where screening was predominantly fecal test-based, the approach in the US was primarily driven by colonoscopy, and the uptake of fecal tests and sigmoidoscopy gradually declined in the past two decades. Interpretation: Despite ongoing progress in CRC screening offers and utilization, there remains large potential for enhanced roll-out and utilization of effective CRC screening programs for enhanced control of CRC incidence and mortality in the years ahead. This study explores a nanoemulsion formulated with açaí seed oil, known for its rich fatty acid composition and diverse biological activities. This study aimed to characterise a nanoemulsion formulated with açaí seed oil and explore its cytotoxic effects on HeLa and SiHa cervical cancer cell lines, alongside assessing its antioxidant and toxicity properties both in vitro and in vivo. Extracted from fruits sourced in Brazil, the oil underwent thorough chemical characterization using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The resulting nanoemulsion was prepared and evaluated for stability, particle size, and antioxidant properties. The nanoemulsion exhibited translucency, fluidity, and stability post centrifugation and temperature tests, with a droplet size of 238.37, PDI -9.59, pH 7, and turbidity 0.267. In vitro assessments on cervical cancer cell lines revealed antitumour effects, including inhibition of cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation. Toxicity tests conducted in cell cultures and female Swiss mice demonstrated no adverse effects of both açaí seed oil and nanoemulsion. Overall, açaí seed oil, particularly when formulated into a nanoemulsion, presents potential for cancer treatment due to its bioactive properties and safety profile.

Background and Aim: Treatment of endometriosis involves pain relief which is achieved through the administration of analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, with or without the addition of hormone therapy. At present, studies investigating endometriosis pain management using experimental rat models and the use of medications are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically evaluate research trends and critical points in the field of endometriosis pain management using experimental models. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 publications related to this topic that were published from 2012 to 2022 were retrieved from various databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL, using appropriate English keywords. The quality of the publications was evaluated using impact metrics, productivity, term density mapping, and author network. Results: The average publication rate was three articles per year, reaching its peak in 2021 at five articles per year. The United States and China were found to be the most productive countries, with 12 and 10 publications per year, respectively. The field of medicine (37.0%) was the most abundant, although the H-index was relatively low (13:13). Term density mapping involved the search of 542 keywords, of which 35 were selected, with only 8 exhibiting significant density. Conclusion: In the past decade, there has been a shortage of publications that have addressed pain in endometriosis in experimental models and, within this context the majority of the production and publication in this field has been performed by the United States and China. After performing this bibliometric review, it can be inferred that more research is required in this field, to develop new approaches and treatments for endometriotic pain.

Osteoarthritis (OA) remains a chronic incurable condition, presenting substantial challenges in treatment. This study explores a novel strategy by investigating the concurrent use of cuminaldehyde, a natural compound, with indomethacin in animal models of MIA-induced OA. Our results demonstrate that the co-administration of cuminaldehyde and indomethacin does indeed produce a superior effect when compared to these compounds individually, significantly enhancing therapeutic outcomes. This effect is evidenced by a marked reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IFN-γ, alongside a significant increase in the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, compared to treatments with each compound alone. Radiographic analyses further confirm the preservation of joint integrity and a reduction in osteoarthritic damage, highlighting the association’s efficacy in cartilage-reducing damage. These findings suggests that the association of cuminaldehyde and indomethacin not only slows OA progression but also offers enhanced cartilage-reducing damage and fosters the production of protective cytokines. This study underscores the potential benefits of integrating natural products with pharmaceuticals in OA management and stresses the importance of further research to fully understand the mechanisms underlying the observed potentiated effects.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a pathology that is characterized by progressive erosion of articular cartilage. In this context, medicinal plants have become relevant tools regarding their potential role in the prevention and treatment of OA, being safe and effective. The aim of this work was investigate the therapeutic efficacy of the ethyl acetate fraction of Bixa orellana leaves (BoEA) and ellagic acid (ElAc) for the therapeutic treatment of OA induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) in rats. The plant material was extracted via maceration with 70 % hydroalcoholic solvent (BoHE). The ethyl acetate (BoEA) fraction was by solvents in increasing order of polarity. The ElAc was identified and isolated in BoEA using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD) and analytical curve. The OA was induced using MIA in the right knee at the knee joint. Doses of BoEA and ElAc were administered daily (every 24 h, orally) at concentrations of 50, 100 and 50 mg/kg, respectively, for 28 days after induced OA. We evaluated the animals through clinical and radiological examinations every 7 days and, on the 29th day, the animals were euthanized, the joints being removed for histopathological analysis and the serum for cytokine analysis. BoEA and ElAc compounds reduced inflammation and nociception in OA and were as effective as indomethacin in clinical parameters of joint discomfort and allodynia in rats, in addition to showing improvements in radiological and histopathological images, acting on the progress of cartilage deterioration, proving properties related to anti-inflammatory and analgesic processes, being important allies for new therapeutic interventions for the treatment of OA.

Heme is the prosthetic group of several enzymes and proteins, including cytochrome c oxidase and hemoglobin. During hemolytic events, high amounts of heme derived from hemoglobin can be released from red blood cells, contributing to the pathogenesis of different hemolytic diseases. Heme-induced cell death is an important player in this situation, and different studies report that heme stimulus can lead to distinct types of regulated cell death. Here, I hypothesize that, when incubated in the presence of high heme concentration, macrophages display concomitant and distinct types of cell death, including necroptosis and a yet to be identified type of cell death. This hypothesis is based on recently published results discussed throughout this manuscript.

Human schistosomiasis is caused by helminths of the genus Schistosoma. Macrophages play a crucial role in the immune regulation of this disease. These cells acquire different phenotypes depending on the type of stimulus they receive. M1 macrophages can be ‘classically activated’ and can display a proinflammatory phenotype. M2 or ‘alternatively activated’ macrophages are considered anti-inflammatory cells. Despite the relevance of macrophages in controlling infections, the role of the functional types of these cells in schistosomiasis is unclear. This review highlights different molecules and/or macrophage activation and polarization pathways during Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum infection. This review is based on original and review articles obtained through searches in major databases, including Scopus, Google Scholar, ACS, PubMed, Wiley, Scielo, Web of Science, LILACS and ScienceDirect. Our findings emphasize the importance of S. mansoni and S. japonicum antigens in macrophage polarization, as they exert immunomodulatory effects in different stages of the disease and are therefore important as therapeutic targets for schistosomiasis and in vaccine development. A combination of different antigens can provide greater protection, as it possibly stimulates an adequate immune response for an M1 or M2 profile and leads to host resistance; however, this warrants in vitro and in vivo studies.

Current-Fed Dual-Active Bridge (CF-DAB) converters are interesting in bidirectional applications when a wide conversion voltage ratio is required, such as residential extra-low voltage energy storage systems, where conventional DAB converters have several limitations. Even though many developments have been made in the last few years to improve the CF-DAB technology for such applications, ensuring a flat efficiency curve is still challenging since it is difficult to ensure high efficiency at very low power. Current solutions include phase-shift modulations (PSM), dual phase-shift (DPSM), and hybrid approaches. This paper proposes an asymmetrical pulse width modulation (a-PWM) strategy to operate the CF-DAB in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), improving the converter efficiency curve at low power. The DCM operation ensures soft-switching conditions over a wide operation range, providing a simple and effective solution. It is relevant to CF-DAB converter development because conventional modulations have limitations concerning the soft-switching range and usually result in overvoltage problems. A 500 W prototype was built and tested to evaluate this proposal. The experimental results show that the a-PWM ensures soft-switching from 2% to 100% of the converter rated power, and the efficiency curve is almost flat due to the improved efficiency at low power levels.

The adaptive arm of the immune system is crucial for appropriate antitumor immune responses. It is generally accepted that clusters of differentiation 4+ (CD4+) T cells, which mediate T helper (Th) 1 immunity (type 1 immunity), are the primary Th cell subtype associated with tumor elimination. In this review, we discuss evidence showing that antitumor immunity and better prognosis can be associated with distinct Th cell subtypes in experimental mouse models and humans, with a focus on Th2 cells. The aim of this review is to provide an overview and understanding of the mechanisms associated with different tumor outcomes in the face of immune responses by focusing on the (1) site of tumor development, (2) tumor properties (i. e., tumor metabolism and cytokine receptor expression), and (3) type of immune response that the tumor initially escaped. Therefore, we discuss how low-tolerance organs, such as lungs and brains, might benefit from a less tissue-destructive immune response mediated by Th2 cells. In addition, Th2 cells antitumor effects can be independent of CD8+ T cells, which would circumvent some of the immune escape mechanisms that tumor cells possess, like low expression of major histocompatibility-I (MHC-I). Finally, this review aims to stimulate further studies on the role of Th2 cells in antitumor immunity and briefly discusses emerging treatment options.

O artigo apresenta uma análise de conteúdo dos recursos argumentativos presentes nos comentários em vídeos do YouTube sobre os cortes na educação feitos pelo governo brasileiro no ano de 2019. Foram coletados 6.609 comentários de seis vídeos que tratam sobre o contingenciamento do orçamento discricionário das universidades federais — medida anunciada em maio de 2019 pelo Ministério da Educação. Três vídeos são a favor dos cortes (dos canais MamãeFalei, Nando Moura e Diego Rox), enquanto outros três foram contra (nos canais Meteoro Brasil, Henry Bugalho e O Historiador). Os resultados apontam para uma interatividade baixa, seja com outros usuários ou com o conteúdo do vídeo, e uma ausência de tomada de posição em relação ao tema. Também reforçam estudos anteriores, indicando maior popularidade e melhor desempenho dos canais conservadores e revelando uma baixa discordância na relação entre comentarista e o produtor do vídeo.

Free heme released from hemoglobin contributes to exacerbated inflammation and tissue damage in hemolytic diseases. While a moderate level of free heme does not cause intravascular inflammation by itself, its presence during infection greatly enhances inflammation. Although specific serum proteins have been found to affect heme-induced inflammation, the selective contribution of serum proteins inhibiting macrophage activation by heme or, conversely, amplifying the production of cytokines by macrophages stimulated with heme and microbial molecules, is poorly defined. Here we identified a serum fraction containing proteins with >50 KDa which was capable of inhibiting heme-stimulated TNF production and capable of enabling TNF production under conditions of a heme-LPS synergy. The inhibition of heme-induced TNF production was mimicked by Hemopexin (Hx), human serum albumin (HSA), serum from Hx-knockout mice, and less efficiently by serum from albumin-knockout mice, but not by serum LDL. Hx and HSA inhibited heme-induced ROS generation, MAPK/ Syk phosphorylation and cell death. However, Hx and HSA each also promoted the synergistic relationship between heme and LPS upon TNF production. Serum from Hx-knockout mice was fully capable of enabling this synergy, while serum from albumin-knockout mice was less efficient to promote TNF production under these conditions. Low concentrations of HSA mimicked the ability of serum to enable heme-stimulated IL-1β production after LPS priming, while high concentrations inhibited it. Together, our findings indicate how heme inflammatory effects are restrained in the blood upon sterile hemolysis, yet exacerbate inflammation in the presence of microbes. Moreover, it is interesting to note that opposing effects of serum proteins on heme-induced macrophage activation were selected through evolution, with both effects exerted by Hx and albumin.

RESUMO A consagração da Semana de Arte Moderna pela história cultural é fenômeno que data da década de 1940. O artigo analisa a reinvenção discursiva da Semana por meio dos escritos de Tristão de Athayde, Lourival Gomes Machado, Luís Martins, Ruben Navarra, Robert C. Smith e Nestor Victor, entre outros críticos. Aponta-se a correspondência epistemológica e metodológica entre dois mitos originários, gerados nessa época e ainda vigentes: a tese de que o movimento modernista redescobriu o Brasil profundo, resgatando a negritude do apagamento, e a noção de que o modernismo brasileiro seria uma retomada das raízes do período colonial.

Mycobacteria cause tuberculosis and other serious diseases. Understanding their mechanisms of resistance to our immune system and exploring novel drugs are critical strategies to combat infections. A bibliometric analysis was performed to identify publication trends and critical research areas in the field of the antimicrobial activity of desferrioxamine. A total of twenty-four publications on the topic, from 2012 to 2023, were retrieved from databases including Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Embase, using specific keywords. The quality of the publications was assessed using impact and productivity metrics, with an average annual publication rate of 2.1 articles. The United States emerged as the most productive country, with medicine (23.4%, 11 publications) and biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology (21.3%, 10 publications) as the top research fields. The five most cited publications accounted for 672 citations, with a relatively low h-index (11:11). In conclusion, there has been a lack of publications on this topic in the last decade. The United States dominates production and publication in this area, and there appears to be limited exchange of knowledge, ideas, and technology within the field. Therefore, fostering international cooperation through funding is essential to facilitate further research and development of desferrioxamine-related studies.

The emergence of horizontal transmission of cancer between vertebrates is an issue that interests scientists and medical society. Transmission requires: (i) a mechanism by which cancer cells can transfer to another organism and (ii) a repressed immune response on the part of the recipient. Transmissible tumors are unique models to comprehend the responses and mechanisms mediated by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), which can be transposed for transplant biology. Here, we discuss the mechanisms involved in immune-mediated tissue rejection, making a parallel with transmissible cancers. We also discuss cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in cancer immunotherapy and anti-rejection therapies.

A análise de conteúdo (AC) é uma das principais técnicas de análise de dados qualitativos nas ciências da vida e nas humanidades e tem sido aperfeiçoada há décadas visando elevar o seu rigor científico. Buscando-se verificar a situação da produção acadêmica nacional, apresentamos uma revisão cientométrica de 3.484 artigos que utilizam AC, publicados entre 2002-19 na SciELO Brasil. Fez-se uma análise de redes de cocitação e de acoplamento bibliográfico através do VOSviewer e uma avaliação das referências mais frequentes. O colégio de ciências da vida aparece em primeiro lugar na utilização da técnica, seguido pelo colégio de humanidades. Os resultados demonstraram predominância do manual de Bardin em ambos, confirmando achados anteriores, mas em uma escala de artigos, amplitude temporal e diversidade disciplinar inéditas. A concentração observada evidencia descompasso entre o avanço da literatura especializada e seu uso pela comunidade científica brasileira.

The present review of 20th Century Indian Art focuses on the book’s contribution to debates around ‘global art history’ and ‘world art studies’. What methodological breakthroughs can be gained from the comparative study of regions outside Europe and the USA? Issues such as hybridity and syncretism, primitivism and folk art, nationalism and regional identities, authenticity and derivativeness, belatedness and modernization, are common to discussions of art history in various contexts traditionally regarded as peripheral or marginal. Inverting the vantage point of historical analysis, and examining them from the position of the formerly colonized, undermines established categories and generates novel insights. Such shifts in perspective tend to inflect differently, and may even alter radically, the understanding of terms like primitivism, Orientalism and even art and craft. The article underscores the importance of rethinking commonly held presumptions about dislocation, appropriation, precedence, deviation. Only when art historians can look at the discipline from a multiplicity of cultural and geographical perspectives will it be possible to establish a truly global art history.

Summary: Background: An increasing proportion of colorectal cancers (CRCs) are detected through screening due to the availability of organised population-based programmes. We aimed to analyse survival probabilities of patients with screen-detected CRC in European countries. Methods: Data from CRC patients were obtained from 16 population-based cancer registries in nine European countries. We included patients with cancer diagnosed from the year organised CRC screening programmes were introduced until the most recent year with available data at the time of analysis, whose ages at diagnosis fell into the age groups targeted by screening. Patients were followed up with regards to vital status until 2016-2020 across the various countries. Overall and CRC-specific survival were analysed by mode of detection and stage at diagnosis for all countries combined and for each country separately using the Kaplan-Meier method. Findings: We included data from 228 134 patients, of whom 134 597 (aged 60-69 years at diagnosis targeted by screening in all countries) were considered in analyses for all countries combined. 22·3% (38 080/134 597) of patients had cancer detected through screening. Most screen-detected cancers were found at stages I-II (65·6% [12 772/19 469 included in stage-specific analyses]), while the majority of non-screen-detected cancers were found at stages III-IV (56·4% [31 882/56 543 included in stage-specific analyses]). Five-year overall and CRC-specific survival rates for patients with screen-detected cancer were 83·4% (95% CI 82·9-83·9) and 89·2% (88·8-89·7), respectively; for patients with non-screen-detected cancer, they were much lower (57·5% [57·2-57·8] and 65·7% [65·4-66·1], respectively). The favourable survival of patients with screen-detected cancer was also seen within each stage – five-year overall survival rates for patients with screen-detected stage I, II, III, and IV cancers were 92.4% (95% CI 91·6-93·1), 87·9% (86·6-89·1), 80·7% (79·3-82·0), and 32·3 (29·4-35·2), respectively. These patterns were also consistently seen for each individual country. Interpretation: Patients with cancer diagnosed at screening have a very favourable prognosis. In the rare case of detection of advanced stage cancer, survival probabilities are still much higher than those commonly reported for all patients regardless of mode of detection. Although these results cannot be taken to quantify screening effects, they provide useful and encouraging information for patients with screen-detected CRC and their physicians. Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by synovial inflammation leading to progressive joint erosion and, eventually, joint deformities. RA treatment includes anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and immunosuppressants. Drug administration is associated with adverse reactions, as gastrointestinal ulcers, cardiovascular complications, and opportunistic infections. Wherefore, different plant-derived phytochemical compounds are studied like new therapeutic approach to treatment of RA. Among the phytochemical compounds of plants for treatment of RA, flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins are related for present anti-inflammatory activity and act as physiological and metabolic regulators. They have low toxicity compared to other active plant compounds, so their therapeutic properties are widely studied. The intention of the review is to present an overview of the therapeutics of flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins for RA. An extensive literature survey was undertaken through different online platforms: PubMed, SciELO, and Virtual Health Library databases, to identify phytochemical compounds used in RA treatment and the descriptors used were medicinal plants, herbal medicines, and rheumatoid arthritis. Seventy-five research and review articles were found to be apt for inclusion into the review. The present study summarizes the phytochemicals isolated from plants that have therapeutic effects on RA models, in vitro and in vivo. The studied substances exerted anti-inflammatory, chondroprotective, immunoregulatory, anti-angiogenic, and antioxidant activities and the most compounds possess good therapeutic properties, valuable for further research for treatment of RA.

Abstract The registered incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in primary healthcare centers is lower than expected, suggesting a lack of awareness by primary care healthcare professionals. The implementation of educational tools for healthcare workers has been found to increase timely referral and treatment of patients. We aimed to determine healthcare workers’ knowledge of NAFLD to identify their educational needs in one marginalized region. We performed a cross-sectional survey of 261 healthcare professionals in Tlapa de Comonfort, Guerrero, Mexico from October 2019 to December 2019. We created a questionnaire that assessed domains most relevant to NAFLD knowledge. Two hundred and forty-six questionnaires were completed. Of the respondents, 38.3% were nurses and 63.4% were women. Most nurses identified NAFLD as a prevalent (89%) and preventable (93%) disease. Hypertension (33%) and obesity (84%) were recognized as risk factors. The associations between NAFLD and cancer, cirrhosis and cardiovascular disease were identified by 53%, 67% and 72% of respondents, respectively. The largest gaps were found in diagnostic workup, therapeutic approach and the current treatments. We identify modifiable knowledge gaps in NAFLD. Educational strategies for primary care workers could enhance the identification of patients with NAFLD and prevent complications.

This work studied the obtaining of methyl biodiesel and ethyl biodiesel using alkaline transesterification from macroalgae Fucus vesiculosos oil (FVO). FVO has 86.59% of its composition in unsaturated fatty acids, with a greater quantity of linoleic acid and oleic acid, a chemical composition near the soybean oil, the most used raw material for the production of biodiesel. Linoleic acid (47.88%), and oleic acid (34.66%) are the fatty acids present in the greatest amount in FVO, and unsaturated fatty acids correspond to 86.59% the composition of FVO, a composition of fatty acids close to that of soybean oil, which is the oil most produced and used for the production of biodiesel. To obtain methyl biodiesel (MBFVO) and ethyl biodiesel (EBFVO) the molar ratio oil: alcohol 1: 3 and 1% alkaline catalyst, NaOH, was used. The yield of the transesterification reaction was evaluated by varying the reaction time between 30 and 60 minutes and the highest yields were obtained after 60 minutes of reaction. In order to check the quality of the obtained biodiesel, the properties acidity index, iodine value, water content, specific mass at 20 ºC, oxidative stability, cold filter plugging point and kinematic viscosity were evaluated. The oxidative stability had an induction period below the recommended, but it can be corrected with the addition of antioxidants to the biodiesel. All other physical and chemical properties had values within the stipulated by the regulatory agencies, indicating that the macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus can be a raw material in potential for production of biodiesel.

Resumo Funções cognitivas são alvo frequente de curiosidade, estudo e reflexão, pois são estruturantes para o ser o humano tal como o conhecemos. Compreender os limites cognitivos, os processos que os originam e a forma de os ultrapassar é, por isso, forma de entender a condição humana e de perceber as consequências da potencial manipulação da cognição. Nos últimos anos tem havido interesse crescente no melhoramento cognitivo mediante o uso de fármacos, e com ele têm surgido diversos e importantes dilemas éticos, médicos e legais. O objetivo deste ensaio é refletir sobre os problemas éticos levantados. Pode-se concluir que o melhoramento cognitivo farmacológico tem de ser mais bem estudado no nível farmacodinâmico para que sua aplicação – regulada e em contextos específicos – possa beneficiar indivíduos e sociedade, não pondo em causa a autenticidade da condição humana.

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o ambiente institucional e a capacidade de interferência sobre o processo decisório governamental do Gabinete Digital – experiência de democracia digital desenvolvida no estado do Rio Grande do Sul entre 2011 e 2014 – de modo a contribuir com o debate a respeito da avaliação de iniciativas de democracia digital no Brasil. Para tanto, optou - se por uma abordagem sistêmica ao objeto, ao mesmo tempo em que foram analisados alguns dos aspectos que caracterizaram a instituição participativa em questão. A mobilização institucional, a transversalidade de temas e a adesão do corpo de servidores são destacadas a fim de se avaliar até que ponto a experiência obteve êxito em movimentar o aparato estatal para assegurar efetividade aos processos de participação.

Diabetes mellitus and pancreatitis are common pancreatic diseases in dogs, affecting the endocrine and exocrine portions of the organ. Dogs have a significant role in the history of research related to genetic diseases, being considered potential models for the study of human diseases. This review discusses the importance of using the extracellular matrix of the canine pancreas as a model for the study of diabetes mellitus and pancreatitis, in addition to focusing on the importance of using extracellular matrix in new regenerative techniques, such as decellularization and recellularization. Unlike humans, rabbits, mice, and pigs, there are no reports in the literature characterizing the healthy pancreatic extracellular matrix in dogs, in addition to the absence of studies related to matrix components that are involved in triggering diabetes melittus and pancreatitis. The extracellular matrix plays the role of physical support for the cells and allows the regulation of various cellular processes. In this context, it has already been demonstrated that physiologic and pathologic pancreatic changes lead to ECM remodeling, highlighting the importance of an in-depth study of the changes associated with pancreatic diseases.

Os 100 primeiros dias de governo são retratados pela mídia como uma data simbólica do início de uma gestão. O jornalismo tem por hábito agendar o tema em seus noticiários no decorrer do período e, de forma mais efetiva, no centésimo dia. Esse trabalho analisa a série de entrevistas do portal G1 com 28 prefeitos de capitais e regiões metropolitanas publicadas em 10 de abril de 2017, data exata dos 100 primeiros dias de gestão. Para isso, usa como referencial teórico-metodológico o estudo do enquadramento noticioso. O objetivo é identificar, a partir das entrevistas, quais saliências predominam entre os campos da mídia e da política, buscando perceber de que forma o jornalismo se apropria do marco temporal para enquadrar a entrevista; e quais saliências são percebidas nas perguntas dos jornalistas. Por outro lado, considerando a dependência dos atores políticos pela exposição midiática, também buscamos identificar, no discurso político, qual a imagem que os governantes desejam imprimir no início do mandato. Os resultados apontam que, enquanto o jornalismo usa o período para cobrar o andamento das propostas de campanha, os políticos aproveitam a efeméride para imprimir uma imagem de trabalho, realização e otimismo.

Coronaviruses are the etiologic agents of several diseases. Coronaviruses of critical medical importance are characterized by highly inflammatory pathophysiology, involving severe pulmonary impairment and infection of multiple cell types within the body. Here, we discuss the interplay between coronaviruses and autophagy regarding virus life cycle, cell resistance, and inflammation, highlighting distinct mechanisms by which autophagy restrains inflammatory responses, especially those involved in coronavirus pathogenesis. We also address different autophagy modulators available and the rationale for drug repurposing as an attractive adjunctive therapy. We focused on pharmaceuticals being tested in clinical trials with distinct mechanisms but with autophagy as a common target. These autophagy modulators act in cell resistance to virus infection and immunomodulation, providing a double-strike to prevent or treat severe disease development and death from coronaviruses diseases.

ABSTRACT Objective: A unusual case of ocular toxoplasmosis with significant vitreomacular traction is reported. The patient improved significantly following pars plana vitrectomy combined with visual stimulation and occlusion therapy. Methods: The case of a 5-year-old girl with significant unilateral vision loss associated with vitreous condensation and macular traction is described. Results: Pars plana vitrectomy was carried out for vitreomacular traction release. This was followed by visual stimulation and occlusion therapy. Significant improvement was observed. Conclusion: Despite structural damage, the combination of properly indicated surgery and amblyopia management strategies allowed the achievement of maximum vision goals in this case, suggesting structural damage may be associated with functional amblyopia.

Sambaquis são sítios arqueológicos presentes principalmente próximos a costa e a sistemas flúvio-lacustres. São encontrados na maior parte do litoral brasileiro. Coletas e análises de amostras de solos e de espécies de malacofauna fornecem informações importantes sobre a ocupação humana em determinado local. Essa pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar, através da análise de elementos químicos presentes em amostras de solos, a ocorrência de ocupação humana em três sambaquis localizados no município de Guarapari, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Foram delimitados três perfis, um para cada sambaqui, denominados Una I, Una II e Concha D’Ostra. As amostras de solos foram secas, destorroadas e peneiradas. A seguir foram enviadas para análises em laboratório. Foram encontradas quantidades significativas de elementos químicos tais como fósforo, potássio, sódio, cálcio, magnésio, manganês, zinco, cobre e também de matéria orgânica. Foi verificada ainda significativa variação nos níveis de pH, na capacidade de troca de cátions, na soma de bases e saturação de bases. Os restos de espécies de malacofauna, utilizadas como fonte de alimentação pelos sambaquieiros, bem como as análises químicas das amostras de solos realizadas permitem concluir que houve ocupação humana nos três sambaquis. Altos teores de fósforo e potássio encontrados bem como o porte do sambaqui Concha D’Ostra sugerem que ali houve ocupação humana por período de tempo maior quando comparado com os sambaquis Una I e Una II.

Background and Aim: From a biomedical point of view, the value of marsupials as a model of primitive mammals is indisputable. Among its species, the possum is a model that allows the study of the ontogeny of different organic systems, as well as their physiological aspects. The relevance of anatomical, functional, evolutionary, and phylogenetic study of marsupials for the development of comparative morphology is extensively documented in the literature. However, there are still many aspects to be further evaluated, as the anatomy and histology of the respiratory tract of this species. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology of the larynx, trachea, and lungs of Didelphis marsupialis. Materials and Methods: Five adult male animals were donated to the Comparative Animal Anatomy Laboratory – LAAC/ CCAA-UFMA, for morphological studies. Specimens were washed in running water to perform biometrics. Then, they were fixed with 10% formaldehyde solution. After the fixation period, the specimens were positioned in dorsal decubitus position, for dissection of the respiratory system organs, by opening the ventral region of the neck and thoracic cavity, with subsequent removal of the pectoral muscles, ribs, and sternum. For histological analysis, fragments of 1 cm2 of the larynx (epiglottis and thyroid cartilages), trachea, and lungs were collected and fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution. Right after fixation, the fragments were dehydrated in increasing concentrations of ethyl alcohol (70, 80, 95, and 100%), diaphanized in xylene, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned into thin slices of 5 μm using a microtome. Sections were stained using the hematoxylin and eosin technique. Results: Anatomically, the larynx starts right after the pharynx. It consisted of four cartilages: Epiglottis, cricoid, thyroid, and arytenoid. The trachea was made of dorsally incomplete cartilaginous rings. At the entrance of the thoracic cavity, it bifurcated into the left and right main bronchus. The left lung was smaller than the right lung, with two lobes (cranial and caudal). The right lung presents the cranial, middle, caudal, and accessory lobes. Histologically, the epiglottis consisted of elastic cartilage and is covered by a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Thyroid cartilage is made of hyaline cartilage covered by smooth muscle. The trachea presents hyaline cartilage, with ciliated pseudo-stratified epithelium, serous glands, isogenic groups of chondrocytes, and perichondrium. The lung consisted of bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli, also presenting blood vessels and arteries. Conclusion: Morphologically, the larynx, trachea, and lungs of D. marsupialis were similar to those of the other Didelphids described in the literature.

Este artigo busca analisar como se deu a construção narrativa da destituição da presidenta Dilma Rousseff nos principais jornais brasileiros, avaliando tanto categorias da narrativa quanto do enquadramento noticioso. O corpus é formado por 2.272 notícias publicadas pelos três principais jornais brasileiros desde o início da tramitação do processo – dezembro de 2015 – até a saída definitiva de Dilma Rousseff – agosto de 2016. Por meio da análise de conteúdo, verificou-se que o julgamento predominante da narrativa jornalística culpou Dilma e aliados. Houve destaque, enquanto recomendação de tratamento, à ideia de que o impeachment era a melhor solução. Em relação à identificação dos personagens, percebeu-se que os atores políticos ligados a Dilma obtiveram maior destaque como vítimas e vilões (e não heróis). Enfim, concluímos que o jornalismo não conseguiu escapar das narrativas políticas cotidianas, sem conseguir demonstrar a real magnitude e complexidade desse acontecimento político.

Introduction The prevalence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) related to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is rising in the whole world. Objective To access the prevalence and temporal trend of HPV infection in oropharyngeal cancer by analyzing the expression of the p16 protein. Methods We conducted a transversal study in a Brazilian reference oncology center. The sample consisted of 254 patients with OSCC. The analyzed period was from 2013 to 2017. All patients underwent p16 immunohistochemistry analysis. Results The overall prevalence of HPV-related OSCC was of 31.9%. During the analyzed period, we observed a trend of increasing rates of OSCC that marked positive for p16 immunohistochemistry. The annual prevalence of p16-positive cases was of 20.6% in 2013, 23.9% in 2014, 33.3% in 2015, 38.3% in 2016, and 34.2% in 2017. Most of the patients were stage III and IV (84%). Female patients (odds ratio [OR] = 2.43; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.003–5.888; p = 0.049) and younger patients (OR = 2.919; 95%CI: 1.682–5.067; p

The use of mixed mineral fertilizers consisting of macro- and micronutrients, which are already routinely used for leaf fertilization, in the treatment of corn and soybean seeds would positively influence germination and vigor, consequently improving growth and seedling development. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological potential of corn and soybean seeds treated with mixed mineral fertilizers. The seed treatment efficiency test with mixed mineral fertilizers was conducted at the Federal University of Jataí—UFJ—using Vital®, Lança®, Ídolo®, Massivo®, and their combinations. The treatments consisted of two controls for soybean and three for corn. Analysis of variance was performed using the F-test (p ≤ 0.05), and when there was significance, the means were compared using the Scott–Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). The mixed mineral fertilizers Vital® + Massivo® (T6), Lança® + Ídolo® (T7), and Vital® + Lança® + Ídolo® (T10) used in the seed treatment benefit the development of soybean (NS7667 IPRO) seeds. The treatments for corn (MG744 PWU) had little effect on germination and seedling development. The use of mixed mineral fertilizers in the seed treatments did not affect the physiological potential of the soybean and corn seeds, keeping the lots with germination values within commercialization standards.

Resumo: O artigo realiza uma análise do uso da estratégia argumentativa de autoridade em vlogs publicados no YouTube por produtores de conteúdo conservadores do Brasil. A partir do contexto pré-vacinação contra a COVID-19 no país, entre os meses de outubro de 2020 e janeiro de 2021, identificou-se a partir dos preceitos da Retórica a utilização tanto de argumentos de autoridade para reforçar um posicionamento quanto os de desvalorização de opositor — os ad hominen — em 26 vídeos de 13 canais diferentes. Para obtenção de dados sistematizados, foi realizada uma Análise de Conteúdo. Os resultados indicam que a chamada Nova Direita traz algumas características em comum, como a necessidade de identificar e desqualificar um adversário e a alta valorização da autoridade autoatribuída, ou seja, conferida ao próprio youtuber. Por outro lado, o corpus revela-se difuso no formato de colocação de ideias e na organização de seus argumentos, inclusive com discursos contrários às ações do Governo Federal. This paper proposes a dispatchable photovoltaic (PV) hybrid inverter for output power tracking without any dependency on the converter’s efficiency and with no power closed loop. The system uses an extra-low-voltage battery energy storage system (BEES) based on a Li-ion battery pack to be applicable for use inside homes and other installations close to the end-user. A bidirectional isolated current-fed dual-active bridge (CF-DAB) converter associated with the batteries provides a wide conversion voltage ratio and ensures safety for the users. The proposed control system shares the DC bus voltage controller between the ac grid interfacing converter (AC-DC) and CF-DAB (DC-DC), eliminating the converter’s efficiency in the reference equations. When dispatchable power is not required, or according to the user’s request, the battery’s charge/discharge current can be specified. A disturbance rejection technique avoids low-frequency current ripple on the battery side. It contributes to the battery’s lifespan. Experimental results presenting the dc bus voltage control, current disturbance rejection, and power dispatching are included to validate the proposal.

Este artigo analisa os tipos e formas de discurso de ódio presentes na fanpage do político Jair Bolsonaro, entre os anos de 2013 e 2016 — período em que o parlamentar manifestava interesse em concorrer à presidência em 2018. Os procedimentos metodológicos envolvem uma articulação entre Mineração de Dados, Estatística e Análise do Conteúdo (AC) de 3.819.909 comentários. A extração dos dados foi realizada pelo Netvizz e um software foi desenvolvido exclusivamente para a mineração textual. A AC verificou os tipos de discursos de ódio presentes na página e a forma como os interagentes manifestaram a intolerância. Os resultados mostraram o ódio político-partidário como o mais recorrente, seguido pelo discurso sexista, LGBTfóbico e xenofóbico. As formas de manifestação mais recorrentes foram insultos e xingamentos, estereótipos e generalizações, sentimento de superioridade e ameaças.

Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. massiliense (Mabs) causes chronic infections, which has led to the need for new antimycobacterial agents. In this study, we investigated the antimycobacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of the ethyl acetate fraction of Bixa orellana leaves (BoEA) and ellagic acid (ElAc). In silico analysis predicted that ElAc had low toxicity, was not mutagenic or carcinogenic, and had antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. Apparently, ElAc can interact with COX2 and Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) enzymes, which could explain both activities. In vitro analysis showed that BoEA and ElAc exerted antimicrobial activity against Mabs (minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.56, 1.56 mg/mL and bactericidal concentration of 6.25, 3.12 mg/mL, respectively. Clarithromycin showed MIC and MBC of 1 and 6 µg/mL). Treatment with BoEA or ElAc increased survival of Tenebrio molitor larvae after lethal infection with Mabs and reduced carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice, around 40% of edema volume after the fourth hour, similarly to diclofenac. In conclusion, BoEA and ElAc exert antimicrobial effects against Mabs and have anti-inflammatory effects, making them potential sources of antimycobacterial drugs. The biological activities of ElAc may be due to its high binding affinities predicted for COX2 and DHFR enzymes.

Abstract In São Luís, Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, the notification of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases intensified in 1982, showing endemic and epidemic patterns. In this city, the Center for Zoonoses Control (CZC) was an organization in charge of the control and prevention of the disease. However, technical and political reasons have led to a significant decline in the periodicity of its activities. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the epidemiological scenario of human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) and the prevalence of the disease in dogs after the cessation of the CZC activities, covering the period of 2007 to 2016. The seroprevalence of canine leishmaniasis was determined based on clinical and serological profiles. HVL cases were notified using data provided by the Municipal Health Department of São Luís. A seropositivity rate of 45.8% (p = 0.0001) was found among dogs, 54% (p = 0.374) of which were asymptomatic. As for human cases, there were 415 notifications, with an increase in the incidence of the zoonosis observed during the aforementioned period. Thus, it can be inferred that after the control and surveillance activities were curtailed, there was an increase in the number of seropositive animals in circulation, acting as reservoirs of infection for dogs and humans.

Tuberculous granuloma formation is mediated by hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), and is essential for establishing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and its progression to active tuberculosis (TB). Here, we investigated whether HIF-1α expression and adjacent mechanisms were associated with latent or active TB infection. Patients with active TB, individuals with LTBI, and healthy controls were recruited, and the expression of cytokine genes IL15, IL18, TNFA, IL6, HIF1A, and A20 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and serum vitamin D (25(OH)D3) levels were evaluated. Additionally, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were analyzed in PBMC lysates and culture supernatants, respectively, after HIF-1α blockade with 2-methoxyestradiol. We observed that IL-15 expression was higher in individuals with LTBI than in patients with active TB, while IL-18 and TNF-α expression was similar between LTBI and TB groups. Additionally, serum 25(OH)D3 levels and expression of IL-6, HIF1A, and A20 were higher in patients with active TB than in individuals with LTBI. Moreover, PBMCs from individuals with LTBI showed decreased NF-κB phosphorylation and increased TNF-α production after HIF-1α blockade. Together, these results suggest that under hypoxic conditions, TNF-α production and NF-κB pathway downregulation are associated with the LTBI phenotype.

Candidiasis is the most common fungal infection among immunocompromised patients. Its treatment includes the use of antifungals, which poses limitations such as toxicity and fungal resistance. Plant-derived extracts, such as Punica granatum, have been reported to have antimicrobial activity, but their antifungal effects are still unknown. We aimed to evaluate the antifungal and antiviral potential of the ethyl acetate fraction of P. granatum (PgEA) and its isolated compound galloyl-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-glucose (G-HHDP-G) against Candida spp. In silico analyses predicted the biological activity of G-HHDP-G. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of PgEA and G-HHDP-G, and their effects on biofilm formation, preformed biofilms, and phospholipase production were determined. In silico analysis showed that G-HHDP-G has antifungal and hepatoprotective effects. An in vitro assay confirmed the antifungal effects of PgEA and G-HHDP-G, with MIC in the ranges of 31.25–250 μg/mL and 31.25 ≥ 500 μg/mL, respectively. G-HHDP-G and PgEA synergistically worked with fluconazole against planktonic cells. The substances showed antibiofilm action, alone or in combination with fluconazole, and interfered with phospholipase production. The antifungal and antibiofilm actions of PgEA and G-HHDP-G, alone or in combination with fluconazole, in addition to their effects on reducing Candida phospholipase production, identify them as promising candidates for therapeutics.

This work proposes an autonomous management system for distributed generation (DG) systems connected to the AC grid, using supervisory control theory (SCT). SCT is used to deal with discrete asynchronous events that modify the properties and operational conditions of these systems. The proposed management layer allows the smart inverters to interact with smart grid managers (SGMs), while guaranteeing operation compliance with the IEEE Standards. The implemented supervisor for the management layer is an automaton that performs the smart inverter manager (SIM) functions in the photovoltaic systems in discrete events. A DSP real-time verification was performed with Typhoon HIL 602+ to demonstrate the smart inverter’s operating dynamics connected to the grid. The results showed the fast response and robust operation of the smart inverter manager to the commands from the smart grid manager.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the scientific community and the pharmaceutical industry to develop new vaccines, in an attempt to reach herd immunity and stop the SARS-CoV-2 from spreading. However, to ensure vaccination among the general population, COVID-19 vaccine intention must be measured. So far, no studies have focused on rural residents in Latin America, which represent approximately 20% of the population of this geographical region. In this study, we present the validation of a self-developed questionnaire, which was validated in a pilot study with 40 Spanish-speaking Mexican rural residents in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. In this study, we describe the chronological validation of the questionnaire, including the assessment of its internal consistency and temporal reliability, which we measured with the Cronbach’s alpha and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, respectively. After the psychometrical analysis, we were able to validate a 20-item questionnaire, which intends to assess vaccine intention among the rural population. Aiming to develop a comprehensive policy and vaccination strategies, we hope this instrument provides valuable insight regarding COVID-19 vaccination willingness across rural communities in Mexico and Latin America. Finally, if we want to reach worldwide herd immunity, it is important to understand rural residents’ position towards COVID-19 vaccination.

The detailed study of graphene oxide (GO) synthesis by changing the graphite/oxidizing reagents mass ratios (mG/mROxi), provided GO nanosheets production with good yield, structural quality, and process savings. Three initial samples containing different amounts of graphite (3.0 g, 4.5 g, and 6.0 g) were produced using a bench reactor under strictly controlled conditions to guarantee the process reproducibility. The produced samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), x-ray diffraction (XDR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetry (TGA) techniques. The results showed that the major GO product comprised of nanosheets containing between 1–5 layers, with lateral size up to 1.8 µm. Therefore, it was possible to produce different batches of graphene oxide with desirable physicochemical characteristics, keeping the amount of oxidizing reagent unchanged. The use of different proportions (mG/mROxi) is an important strategy that provides to produce GO nanostructures with high structural quality and scale-up, which can be well adapted in medium-sized bench reactor.

The present article examines the relationship between intellectuals and political autonomy in the Brazilian cultural context, focusing on a historical case study: the actions of two of the most important leaders of the modernist movement, Mário de Andrade and Oswald de Andrade. Special consideration is given to two lectures delivered by them, “The modernist movement” (1942) and “The path trodden” (1944), respectively. How did these authors react to powerful pressures by the Vargas dictatorship to control information and cultural discourse? Mário de Andrade attempted to draw near to the authorities, but afterwards publicly expressed regret and self-criticism. Oswald de Andrade, engaged in communist circles, kept a distance from official patronage at the time. The results of their respective attitudes are indicative of the difficult position of Brazilian intellectuals faced with an authoritarian State.

In the last few years, Brazilian municipal governments have launched their open data web portals. These initiatives have been taking place as part of the implementation of the Transparency Act, which sets forth deadlines and punishments concerning the adoption and performance of steps that focus on government transparency, such as the presence of transparency portals. Accordingly, this paper aims to check whether municipalities that keep portals with higher a Digital Transparency Index (DTI) will also prove to have the strongest open data initiatives. In order to achieve this goal we assess the official portals and open data initiatives in five Brazilian capitals by using the methodologies proposed by Paula Amorim (2012), and the prerequisites pointed out by the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF, 2011), and Tim Berners-Lee (2010). The results indicate that there is no direct relationship between the Digital Transparency Index and the strength of open data actions in each municipality. The discussion of the results points to the absence of a concise public policy on digital democracy that is able to promote transparency and government data simultaneously.

Rotary friction welding process (RFW) is one of the most used processes in the world for manufacturing bimetallic components that require high mechanical strength. All process occurs in solid state at temperatures below the melting point of the involved materials, having as the main bonding mechanisms the diffusion and mechanical mixture. The purpose of this work was to carry out an experimental thermal analysis of the dissimilar joint AA6351 T6 aluminum and AISI 304L stainless steel during the friction welding operation through system of thermocouples. Gradients of temperature obtained had their data analyzed and recorded. Results of the experimental thermal analysis showed the behavior of the temperature in the bonding interface, how the dissipation occurs in the radial and longitudinal direction, heating rates, cooling, maximum temperatures reached, its relationship with the different stages of the process and the influence on mechanical properties of welded joint. This study is of great importance for relating the temperature distribution in the bonding interface with atomic diffusion and mechanical resistance of junction.

Esta pesquisa realiza um levantamento da produção acadêmica no campo da Administração sobre democracia digital, governo eletrônico e termos afins. A prospecção envolve artigos que abordam gestão, políticas públicas e sistemas de informação, publicados em periódicos qualificados na área de Administração, entre 2002 e 2016. O estudo lança mão de uma análise de conteúdo, classificando as publicações de acordo com as seguintes variáveis: ano, periódico, autor, abordagem (gerencial, política, híbrida). Foram encontrados 49 artigos, distribuídos em apenas sete periódicos e majoritariamente produzidos por pesquisadores provenientes de apenas seis instituições brasileiras. Ademais, evidenciamos que o termo “democracia digital” era praticamente inexistente até 2011. Por fim, a abordagem gerencialista era predominante inicialmente, mas foi superada pela abordagem política nos últimos anos. Conclui-se que a área de Administração já foi capaz de superar uma visão excessivamente gerencial, mas que o tema ainda carece de maior atenção acadêmica.

Brazil has a Microgravity Program mainly based on experiments using sounding rockets. Up to now, four missions have been carried out with approximately 35 experiments submitted in total. In all flights, the Associate Laboratory of Sensors and Materials of the Brazilian Space Research Institute (LABAS/INPE) participated with a fast solidification furnace, capable of producing temperatures up to 900 °C, which was tested with semiconductor and metal alloys. This paper describes the construction and the performance of that furnace during the last parabolic flight, Rio Verde Mission, occurred in 2016. The solidification furnace is now qualified and ready to be used by other institutions in sounding rocket flights.
