Abstract Hyperspectral imaging has demonstrated its potential to provide correlated spatial and spectral information of a sample by a non‐contact and non‐invasive technology. In the medical field, especially in histopathology, HSI has been applied for the classification and identification of diseased tissue and for the characterization of its morphological properties. In this work, we propose a hybrid scheme to classify non‐tumor and tumor histological brain samples by hyperspectral imaging. The proposed approach is based on the identification of characteristic components in a hyperspectral image by linear unmixing, as a features engineering step, and the subsequent classification by a deep learning approach. For this last step, an ensemble of deep neural networks is evaluated by a cross‐validation scheme on an augmented dataset and a transfer learning scheme. The proposed method can classify histological brain samples with an average accuracy of 88%, and reduced variability, computational cost, and inference times, which presents an advantage over methods in the state‐of‐the‐art. Hence, the work demonstrates the potential of hybrid classification methodologies to achieve robust and reliable results by combining linear unmixing for features extraction and deep learning for classification.

Abstract Hyperspectral (HS) imaging (HSI) technology combines the main features of two existing technologies: imaging and spectroscopy. This allows to analyse simultaneously the morphological and chemical attributes of the objects captured by a HS camera. In recent years, the use of HSI provides valuable insights into the interaction between light and biological tissues, and makes it possible to detect patterns, cells, or biomarkers, thus, being able to identify diseases. This work presents the HistologyHSI-GB dataset, which contains 469 HS images from 13 patients diagnosed with brain tumours, specifically glioblastoma. The slides were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and captured using a microscope at 20× power magnification. Skilled histopathologists diagnosed the slides and provided image-level annotations. The dataset was acquired using custom HSI instrumentation, consisting of a microscope equipped with an HS camera covering the spectral range from 400 to 1000 nm.

Esta investigación pretende enriquecer la comprensión del panorama actual de los KMS a través de una exploración bibliométrica. El objetivo es ofrecer a investigadores y profesionales un resumen actualizado que los sitúe en este campo y su dominio además de mostrar su estado actual, así como sugerir posibles direcciones futuras de investigación. El estudio revela un crecimiento constante en la investigación de KMS, destacando la colaboración multidisciplinaria y la influencia global. Temas emergentes incluyen elementos como el talento humano y la sostenibilidad, y también se denotan necesidades de investigación en seguridad informática y aprendizaje.

Correlated Multimodal Imaging (CMI) gathers information about the same specimen with two or more modalities that–combined–create a composite and complementary view of the sample (including insights into structure, function, dynamics and molecular composition). CMI allows one to reach beyond what is possible with a single modality and describe biomedical processes within their overall spatio-temporal context and gain a mechanistic understanding of cells, tissues, and organisms in health and disease by untangling their molecular mechanisms within their native environment. The field of CMI has grown substantially over the last decade and previously unanswerable biological questions have been solved by applying novel CMI workflows. To disseminate these workflows and comprehensively share the scattered knowledge present within the CMI community, an initiative was started to bring together imaging, image analysis, and biomedical scientists and work towards an open community that promotes and disseminates the field of CMI. This community project was funded for the last 4 years by an EU COST Action called COMULIS (COrrelated MUltimodal imaging in the LIfe Sciences). In this review we share some of the showcases and lessons learnt from the action. We also briefly look ahead at how we anticipate building on this initial initiative.

Optical binding enables light-induced assembly of many particles within a focus area. Here, the authors demonstrate that optical binding can occur outside the irradiated area by scattered light interacting with the particles outside the focus, generating arc-shape potential wells for particle trapping.

Introducción: En pacientes con trauma cerrado de abdomen, la posibilidad de encontrar algún signo de irritación peritoneal es de entre el 1 y 58%, especialmente cuando el paciente sufre alteración del estado de alerta o bajo los efectos de sustancias. Métodos: Estudio retroprolectivo. Muestreo consecutivo. Se calcularon la precisión, sensibilidad, especificidad, valor predictivo positivo y valor predictivo negativo, tanto para los datos de irritación peritoneal como para el Focused Assessment Sonography in Trauma (FAST), de manera global y en subgrupos de pacientes intubados y no intubados, así como al combinar la existencia o no de datos de irritación peritoneal con el FAST, con un intervalo de confianza del 95%. Se calculó también el índice de Kappa para evaluar la concordancia entre la irritación peritoneal y el FAST. Resultados: Irritación peritoneal: precisión 73.3%, sensibilidad 60.8%, especificidad 86.3%, valor predictivo positivo 82.3% y valor predictivo negativo 67.8%. FAST: precisión 86.6%, sensibilidad 78.2%, especificidad 95.4%, valor predictivo positivo 94.7% y valor predictivo negativo 80.7%. Conclusión: El FAST ha sido considerado como un complemento de la evaluación inicial de los pacientes con trauma cerrado de abdomen, sin embargo es momento de que se considere parte del mismo protocolo procurando dar prioridad a la realización del FAST sobre la exploración física, sin que esta se omita de la evaluación de estos pacientes.

The aim of this paper is to explain the differential object marking (DOM) of inanimate objects in Spanish. Generally, animate objects in Spanish are marked with an A morpheme; however, it is possible for the A-marker to appear also with inanimate objects in specific circumstances. In this article, I defend the idea that a lexical feature of the verb (the presupposition of existence) must be licensed with the organizing node that dominates the specificity features. V inherits this organizing node from v. The analysis will be done using mainly two theoretical tools: the feature geometry of Harley & Ritter (2002) and Chomsky's (2013, 2015) labeling theory.

Introducción: Aunque la habilidad para realizar un Focussed Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) es fácil de adquirir, se requiere entrenamiento para familiarizarse con la técnica; sin embargo, la curva de aprendizaje no se ha logrado definir. Método: Estudio retroprolectivo con muestreo consecutivo. Se evaluaron los informes de 74 protocolos FAST realizados por residentes de urgencias. Se consideraron como métodos de referencia la tomografía de abdomen y la laparotomía exploratoria. Se calcularon la precisión, la sensibilidad, la especificidad, el valor predictivo positivo y el valor predictivo negativo de forma global y según el año de residencia para compararlos entre sí con p = 0.05. Resultados: Se calcularon de forma global la precisión (86.5%), la sensibilidad (80%), la especificidad (92.3%), el valor predictivo positivo (90.3%) y el valor predictivo negativo (83.7%). Las curvas de precisión, especificidad y valores predictivos positivo y negativo mejoran con el tiempo, es decir, muestran una pendiente positiva, encontrando una meseta durante el segundo año de residencia. La curva de sensibilidad muestra un comportamiento distinto, pues durante el segundo año de residencia se encontró su pico máximo y durante el tercer año tuvo una pendiente negativa. Conclusiones: La habilidad para realizar el FAST en los residentes de urgencias requiere una sesión teórico-práctica y un mínimo de 1 año de repeticiones supervisadas en escenarios clínicos reales para lograr un aprendizaje significativo, por lo que se debe desarrollar desde el primer año de residencia, haciendo especial énfasis en la retroalimentación durante los 3 años de residencia.

Abstract Background Repetitive DNA elements such as direct and inverted repeat sequences are present in every genome, playing numerous biological roles. In amphibians, the functions and effects of the repeat sequences have not been extensively explored. We consider that the data of mitochondrial genomes in the NCBI database are a valuable alternative to generate a better understanding of the molecular dynamic of the repeat sequences in the amphibians. Results This work presents the development of a strategy to identify and quantify the total amount of repeat sequences with lengths from 5 to 30 base pairs in the amphibian mitogenomes. The results show differences in the abundance of repeat sequences among amphibians and bias to specific genomic regions that are not easily associated with the classical amphibian ancestry. Conclusions Derived from these analyses, we show that great variability of the repeat sequences exists among amphibians, demonstrating that the mitogenomes of these organisms are dynamic.

The use of hyperspectral imaging for medical applications is becoming more common in recent years. One of the main obstacles that researchers find when developing hyperspectral algorithms for medical applications is the lack of specific, publicly available, and hyperspectral medical data. The work described in this paper was developed within the framework of the European project HELICoiD (HypErspectraL Imaging Cancer Detection), which had as a main goal the application of hyperspectral imaging to the delineation of brain tumors in real-time during neurosurgical operations. In this paper, the methodology followed to generate the first hyperspectral database of in-vivo human brain tissues is presented. Data was acquired employing a customized hyperspectral acquisition system capable of capturing information in the Visual and Near InfraRed (VNIR) range from 400 to 1000 nm. Repeatability was assessed for the cases where two images of the same scene were captured consecutively. The analysis reveals that the system works more efficiently in the spectral range between 450 and 900 nm. A total of 36 hyperspectral images from 22 different patients were obtained. From these data, more than 300 000 spectral signatures were labeled employing a semi-automatic methodology based on the spectral angle mapper algorithm. Four different classes were defined: normal tissue, tumor tissue, blood vessel, and background elements. All the hyperspectral data has been made available in a public repository.

This article explores the conditions that underlie the differential marking of objects in Spanish. It is argued here that the A-marker of the direct object is the realization of features in D (class and animate) and features in the verb (affectedness). These features must be part of the label Phi that dominates the VP. The interaction between the participating features of the Spanish DOM will be described by using feature geometry.

Introducción. Pese a las estrategias de vigilancia se cree que existe Subregistro de dengue, lo que puede ser secundario a la no detección de casos ya sea por no consulta del paciente, por falla en el diagnóstico o diligenciamiento de fichas de notificación. Objetivo. Estimar el Subregistro de los casos de dengue en el municipio de Tocaima durante el periodo de enero a septiembre de 2019 y establecer los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas respecto al dengue de los habitantes del municipio. Metodología. Se realizó un estudio transversal de prevalencia durante el período de enero a septiembre de 2019 en la población urbana de Tocaima, mediante encuestas a dos viviendas de las 262 manzanas seleccionadas por muestreo aleatorio simple en la búsqueda activa comunitaria y en el 100 % de los registros individuales de prestación de servicios y del sistema de vigilancia nacional en salud pública SIVIGILA mediante Búsqueda Activa Institucional BAI. Resultados. Se encuestaron 440 personas de las cuales 19 manifestaron haber presentado síntomas y signos de dengue en el periodo de estudio, de estos, seis personas no asistieron a consulta médica. El Subregistro Comunitario por falta de asistencia a consulta médica fue de 31,5 %. Se identificaron en SIVIGILA 125 casos de dengue notificados en el periodo y 156 en el Registro Individual de Prestación de Servicios (RIPS), aplicando el método de Chandra-Sekar Deming se estimaron un total de 257 casos, para un Subregistro Institucional de SIVIGILA de 48,5 %. Conclusiones. Son diversas las razones por las cuales no se notificaron todos los casos de la enfermedad al sistema de vigilancia, la primera es que solo se notifican los casos de las personas que consultan a los servicios de salud y que además viven en Tocaima, la segunda es que algunos casos detectados no se notificaron al sistema de vigilancia por errores de procedimiento, o por desconocimiento del diagnóstico por el personal de salud.

Antibiotic tolerance characterized by slow killing of bacteria in response to a drug can lead to treatment failure and promote the emergence of resistance. β-lactam antibiotics inhibit cell wall growth in bacteria and many of them cause filamentation followed by cell lysis. Hence delayed cell lysis can lead to β-lactam tolerance. Systematic discovery of genetic factors that affect β-lactam killing kinetics has not been performed before due to challenges in high-throughput, dynamic analysis of viability of filamented cells during bactericidal action. We implemented a high-throughput time-resolved microscopy approach in a gene deletion library of Escherichia coli to monitor the response of mutants to the β-lactam cephalexin. Changes in frequency of lysed and intact cells due to the antibiotic action uncovered several strains with atypical lysis kinetics. Filamentation confers tolerance because antibiotic removal before lysis leads to recovery through numerous concurrent divisions of filamented cells. Filamentation-mediated tolerance was not associated with resistance, and therefore this phenotype is not discernible through most antibiotic susceptibility methods. We find that deletion of Tol-Pal proteins TolQ, TolR, or Pal but not TolA, TolB, or CpoB leads to rapid killing by β-lactams. We also show that the timing of cell wall degradation determines the lysis and killing kinetics after β-lactam treatment. Altogether, this study uncovers numerous genetic determinants of hitherto unappreciated filamentation-mediated β-lactam tolerance and support the growing call for considering antibiotic tolerance in clinical evaluation of pathogens. More generally, the microscopy screening methodology described here can easily be adapted to study lysis in large numbers of strains.

Atherothrombosis is the cornerstone of cardiovascular diseases and the primary cause of death worldwide. Genetic contribution to disturbances in lipid metabolism, coagulation, inflammation and oxidative stress increase the susceptibility to its development and progression. Given its multifactorial nature, the multiloci studies have been proposed as potential predictors of susceptibility. A cross-sectional study was conducted to explore the contribution of nine genes involved in oxidative stress, inflammatory and thrombotic processes in 204 subjects with atherothrombosis matched by age and gender with a healthy group (n = 204). To evaluate the possibility of spurious associations owing to the Mexican population genetic heterogeneity as well as its ancestral origins, 300 unrelated mestizo individuals and 329 Native Americans were also included. ALOX5, LPA, MMP9 and TPO gene polymorphisms, as well as their multiallelic combinations, were twice to four times more frequent in those individuals with clinical manifestations of atherothrombosis than in the healthy group. Once adjusting for population stratification was done, these differences remained. Our results add further evidence on the contribution of ALOX5, LPA, MMP9 and TPO polymorphisms to atherothrombosis development in the middle-aged group, emphasizing the multiethnic studies in search of gene risk polymorphisms.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that heterodimerizes with the AhR nuclear translocator (ARNT) to modulate CYP1A1 expression, a gene involved in the biotransformation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). The AhR pathway shows daily variations under the control of the circadian timing system. Daytime restricted feeding (DRF) entrains the expression of genes involved in the processing of nutrients and xenobiotics to food availability. Therefore, we evaluate if temporal AhR, ARNT, and CYP1A1 hepatic expression in rats are due to light/dark cycles or fasting/feeding cycles promoted by DRF. Our results show that AhR oscillates throughout the 24 h period in DRF and ad libitum feeding rats (ALF), showing maximum expression at the same time points. DRF modified the peak of ARNT expression at ZT5; meanwhile, ALF animals showed a peak of maximum expression at ZT17. An increased expression of CYP1A1 was linked to the meal time in both groups of animals. Although a high CYP1A1 expression has been previously associated with BaP genotoxicity, our results show that, compared with the ALF group, DRF attenuated the BaP-CYP1A1 induction potency, the liver DNA-BaP adducts, the liver concentration of unmetabolized BaP, and the blood aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities when BaP is administered prior to the acrophase of CYP1A1 expression. These results demonstrate that DRF modifies the ARNT and CYP1A1 expression and protects from BaP toxicity.

Infections remain an issue of particular relevance in renal transplant patients, particularly viral infections. Human parvovirus B19 infection causes severe refractory anaemia, pancytopenia and thrombotic microangiopathy. Its presence is recognised by analysing blood polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and by the discovery of typical giant proerythroblasts in the bone marrow. We report the case of a 65 year-old man with a history of deceased donor renal transplant in September 2014. At 38 days after the transplant, the patient presented progressive anaemia that was resistant to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. At 64 days after transplant, hyperthermia occurred with progressive deterioration of the patient's general condition. The viral serology and the first blood PCR for human parvovirus B19 were both negative. At 4 months and 19 days after, a bone marrow biopsy was conducted, showing giant erythroblasts with nuclear viral inclusions that were compatible with parvovirus; a PCR in the tissue confirmed the diagnosis. A second blood PCR was positive for parvovirus. After treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin and the temporary discontinuation of mycophenolate mofetil, a complete remission of the disease occurred, although the blood PCR for parvovirus B19 remained positive, so monitoring is necessary for future likely recurrence.

Las infecciones continúan siendo un problema relevante en el paciente trasplantado renal, en especial las infecciones virales. La infección por el parvovirus humano B19 causa anemia refractaria grave, pancitopenia y microangiopatía trombótica. Dicha infección se diagnostica mediante el análisis de la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) en sangre y por la presencia de proeritroblastos gigantes típicos en la médula ósea. Presentamos el caso clínico de un varón de 65 años con trasplante renal de donante cadáver en septiembre de 2014. A los 38 días del trasplante comienza con anemia progresiva y resistente a los agentes estimulantes de la eritropoyesis. A los 64 días se produce hipertermia, con deterioro progresivo de su estado general. La serología vírica resultó negativa, al igual que la PCR inicial en sangre del parvovirus humano B19. A los 4 meses y 19 días se realiza una biopsia de médula ósea en la que se observan eritroblastos gigantes con inclusiones víricas nucleares compatibles con parvovirus, por lo que se realiza una PCR en dicho tejido que confirma el diagnóstico. Una segunda PCR en sangre resultó positiva. Tras el tratamiento con inmunoglobulinas intravenosas (IGIV) y la suspensión temporal del micofenolato de mofetilo, se produce una remisión completa de la enfermedad, aunque persistía positiva la PCR para el parvovirus B19 en sangre, lo que hace necesario vigilar probables recidivas.

Gracias a ella se ha conseguido posicionar esta Revista como un referente en la materia. Desde el pasado mes de marzo de 2019 ha cedido el testigo para centrarse en la actividad que actualmente desarrolla como directora de Comunicación en la Delegación del Gobierno en Andalucía.

The combination of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and digital pathology may yield more accurate diagnosis. In this work, we propose the use of superpixels in HS images for combining regions of pixels that can be classified according to their spectral information to classify glioblastoma (GB) brain tumors in histologic slides. The superpixels are generated by a modified simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) method to accommodate HS images. This work employs a dataset of H&E (Hematoxylin and Eosin) stained histology slides from 13 patients with GB and over 426,000 superpixels. A linear support vector machine (SVM) classifier was performed on independent training, validation, and testing datasets. The results of this investigation show that the proposed method can detect GB brain tumors from non-tumor samples with average sensitivity and specificity of 87% and 81%, respectively. The overall accuracy of this method is 83%. The study demonstrates that hyperspectral digital pathology can be useful for detecting GB brain tumors by exploiting spectral information alone on a superpixel level.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology has demonstrated potential to provide useful information about the chemical composition of tissue and its morphological features in a single image modality. Deep learning (DL) techniques have demonstrated the ability of automatic feature extraction from data for a successful classification. In this study, we exploit HSI and DL for the automatic differentiation of glioblastoma (GB) and non-tumor tissue on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained histological slides of human brain tissue. GB detection is a challenging application, showing high heterogeneity in the cellular morphology across different patients. We employed an HSI microscope, with a spectral range from 400 to 1000 nm, to collect 517 HS cubes from 13 GB patients using 20× magnification. Using a convolutional neural network (CNN), we were able to automatically detect GB within the pathological slides, achieving average sensitivity and specificity values of 88% and 77%, respectively, representing an improvement of 7% and 8% respectively, as compared to the results obtained using RGB (red, green, and blue) images. This study demonstrates that the combination of hyperspectral microscopic imaging and deep learning is a promising tool for future computational pathologies.

We are presenting the case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of Sjögren syndrome and a secondary antiphospholipid syndrome admitted at the Nephrology department for the evaluation of renal failure. The patient was initially diagnosed with tubulointerstitial nephritis and subsequently a membranoproliferative type I glomerulonephritis, secondary to cryoglobulins during the course of the disease. Repeated renal biopsies were required to confirm the diagnosis.

Atualmente, um desenvolvimento e crescimento sustentável são, indiscutivelmente, uma das maiores preocupações e objetivos dos territórios periféricos. De facto, esta tipologia de crescimento já não é apenas um desejo, mas sim uma necessidade territorial, a fim de melhorar a qualidade de vida das populações e ainda para garantir um futuro às gerações vindouras. Tendo em consideração esta tipologia de crescimento, em regiões com bases socioeconómicas “reféns” do turismo, estudos que analisem os processos de ordenamento e planeamento territorial e a sua relação com esta atividade são fundamentais para o desenvolvimento territorial sustentável. Através de ferramentas e metodologias exploratórias, como disso são exemplo: o método de análise de caso de estudo, a análise de impacto territorial, ou os questionários de exploração das perceções públicas; nesse sentido, foi conduzido um estudo de perceções públicas de ordenamento territorial sobre o turismo da Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM).A investigação permite verificar a relação entre as políticas de ordenamento territorial e o seu impacto no turismo regional, assim como o crescimento insustentável da região.

We report a case of a 64-year-old male who, 44 days after starting treatment with prasugrel, presented with severe thrombocytopenia, anemia, renal failure, and severe ADAMTS13 activity deficiency, along with a high titer of autoantibodies to this protease.

Fístulas arteriovenosas para hemodiálise podem apresentar complicações a longo prazo. Entre as complicações mais raras, há a isquemia distal por síndrome de roubo. Os autores relataram a experiência de três casos de pacientes portadores de fístulas braquiocefálicas, em funcionamento por longo prazo e que evoluíram com isquemia crítica do membro, sem resposta com tratamento clínico. Com o intuito de tratar esta afecção e preservar o acesso vascular, optou-se pela realização da revascularização distal interposta por ligadura arterial. Devido à raridade dos casos, relatou-se a experiência e apresentou-se uma revisão de literatura.Arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis may present long-term complications. Among the least frequent complications, there is the steal syndrome. The authors report the experience of three patients that presented with critical limb ischemia years after the access confection of brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistulas, with little response to clinical treatment. Distal revascularization interval ligation was performed in all cases, with good outcome. Due to small quantity of the cases, we decided to report the experience and review the literature on the subject.

OBJETIVO: Calcular los costos por ausentismo laboral atribuibles al tabaquismo en los asegurados del IMSS y población ocupada en México para el periodo 2006-2009. MATERIAL y MÉTODOS: Los costos se estimaron usando fracciones atribuibles para cáncer pulmonar, enfermedad cerebrovascular, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica e infarto agudo de miocardio, así como registros de salarios y días de incapacidad por esas enfermedades en asegurados del IMSS. Los parámetros encontrados se extrapolaron a la población ocupada. RESULTADOS: El IMSS erogó 143.9 millones de pesos a precios de 2009 atribuibles al tabaquismo como subsidio por incapacidad en el período 2006-2009. La productividad perdida atribuible al tabaquismo en asegurados del IMSS ascendió a 298.2 millones de pesos y a 437.8 millones de pesos en población ocupada del país en el mismo período. CONCLUSIONES: El tabaquismo impone costos importantes a las instituciones de seguridad en el país y causa pérdidas en la productividad. Por tanto, deben fortalecerse las políticas gubernamentales de control del tabaco incluidas en el Convenio Marco para el Control del Tabaco.OBJECTIVE: To calculate the absenteeism costs by lung cancer, cerebrovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute myocardial infarction attributable to smoking in the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the occupied population from 2006 to 2009. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Productivity loss data from selected illnesses were obtained from IMSS records. The smoking attributable fraction was used, and extrapolation to occupied population was conducted. RESULTS: IMSS paid $143.9 million pesos (2009 prices) attributable to smoking between 2006 and 2009. The productivity loss was $298.2 million pesos and $437.8 million pesos in the occupied population, attributable to smoking. CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco smoking implies costs to the individual, families and society, which urge to strengthen policies contained in the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control by the WHO.

El presente trabajo plantea la posibilidad de analizar oraciones como María se aburrió de hacer lo mismo como pasivas pronominales, derivadas de las versiones inacusativas de estos verbos sicológicos: A María le aburrió hacer lo mismo. Fundamentalmente, las pruebas que se presentan son de carácter semántico, es decir, tanto la versión pasiva como la inacusativa presentan un significado análogo, específicamente, presentan el rasgo semántico de Causa interna. Las versiones causativa y agentiva del verbo sicológico quedan excluidas como input por carecer de este rasgo. El mecanismo sintáctico que permite formar pasivas a partir de verbos que no tienen argumento externo, por ejemplo los inacusativos, es el desarrollado por Baker (1988), y es el que usaremos en este trabajo

Morphological variables such as phytomass, plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, have been used to express the influence of mineral nutrients on plant growth patterns, since the vegetative development responds, in general, favorably to fertilizer applications. This work evaluates the effect of P on both, some morphological characteristics and total [P] in the shoot of eight grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) genotypes. Genetic materials were grown in nutrient solution under three concentrations of P (0; 0.5 and 1.0 mmol L-1). Plants were harvested 41 days after sowing, and leaf area per plant (LA), number of leaves (NL) per plant, root volume (RV), plant height (PH), root dry matter (RDM), shoot dry matter (SDM), total dry matter (TDM), RDM/SDM ratio, and total P concentration in shoot were determined. RDM/SDM was high for treatment P(0) and diminished about twice when P was added. Lack of applied P decreased the final NL and LA. Shoot [P] was positively correlated with solution [P], but the increase in P concentration in the nutrient solution from 0.5 to 1.0 mmol L-1 had a negative effect on growth. Both under deficiency and sufficiency conditions of P, Himeca-101 showed the best behavior in terms of RDM, SDM, TDM, RV, LA and NL. LA and PH were identified as the best indicators to predict dry matter yield of sorghum plants under P supply conditions.

For alkali sodic soils (pH>8.5), the "hydrolysis of exchangeable sodium" has been used as a possible explanation for the alkalinity production and rise in pH of these soils. As an alternative to this hypothesis, a model was developed to simulate and to explain that the alkalinity production and rise in pH is possible in a soil that accumulates alkaline sodium salts and CaCO3. Several simulations were performed by using different combinations of CO2 partial pressures (P), presence or absence of MgCO3, along with experimental values of exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) and ion concentrations in saturation extracts from an alkali sodic soil (named Pantanal). A hypothetical system with similar conditions to the Pantanal soil but with a Gapon selectivity coefficient (KG) of 0.01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2 was also considered. Good agreement was obtained between experimental and predicted values for pH and ion concentrations in the soil solution when the model (without MgCO3) was applied to the Pantanal soil. However, KG values calculated for the Pantanal soil were generally higher than 0.01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2. Moreover, high pH values and elevated ionic strength were obtained when a KG of 0.01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2 was used at high ESP (similar to those found in the Pantanal soil). KG values obtained for the Pantanal soil and the results obtained in the simulation of the hypothetical system are suggesting that a value higher than 0.01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2 should be used to adequately simulate the behavior of the Pantanal soil at low ionic strength and high ESP values.Em solos alcalino sódicos (pH>8,5), a "hidrólise de sódio trocável" tem sido usada como uma possível explicação para a produção de álcali e elevação do pH nestes solos. Como uma alternativa a essa hipótese, um modelo foi desenvolvido para simular e explicar que a produção de álcali e elevação do pH é possível num solo que acumula sais alcalinos de sódio e CaCO3. Várias simulações foram feitas fazendo uso de diferentes combinações da pressão parcial de CO2 (P), presença ou ausência de MgCO3, com valores experimentais da porcentagem de sódio trocável (ESP) e concentrações de íons em extratos de saturação de um solo sódico alcalino (chamado Pantanal). Um sistema hipotético com condições similars ao solo Pantanal mas com um coeficiente de selectividade de Gapon (KG) de 0,01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2 foi, também, considerado. Boa concordância foi obtida entre os valores experimentais e os predezidos para o pH e concentração de íons na solução do solo quando o modelo (sem MgCO3) foi aplicado ao solo Pantanal. Porém, valores de KG calculados para o solo Pantanal estiveram muito acima de 0,01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2. Além disso, elevados valores de pH e da força iónica foram obtidos quando o KG de 0,01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2 foi usado a altos ESP. Valores de KG obtidos para o solo Pantanal e os resultados achados na simulação do sistema hipotético sugerem que um valor maior de 0,01475 (mmol L-1)-1/2 poderia ser empregado adequadamente para simular o comportamento do solo Pantanal a baixa força iônica e altos valores de ESP.

Analizando datos de la variedad limeña (Perú), este trabajo intenta desarrollar la hipótesis de que en las construcciones con Se aspectual (Juan se comió la manzana) hay un nudo Causa presente. Considero que introducir un nudo Causa equivale a introducir dos roles causativos: Causer y Causee. Asumiendo el trabajo de Pylkkänen (2002, 2008) clasifico al español como una lengua voice-bundling y root-selecting. Una lengua de este tipo no debería permitir causativizar verbos inacusativos o transitivos, de acuerdo con la autora; sin embargo, el clítico aspectual haría posible esa causativización. Este clítico tendría una función reflexiva; específicamente, se encargaría de convertir a uno de los argumentos del verbo en un Causee o Causer, por tanto, no sería necesario ingresar un Causee o Causer diferente, la razón de la imposibilidad mencionada.

Intratumoral expression of genes encoding Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP) might play a critical role not only in cancer development but also in the metabolism of anticancer drugs. The purpose of this study was to compare the mRNA expression patterns of seven representative CYPs in paired tumor and normal tissue of child patients with rabdomyosarcoma (RMS). Using real time quantitative RT-PCR, the gene expression pattern of CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP1B1, CYP2E1, CYP2W1, CYP3A4, and CYP3A5 were analyzed in tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissues from 13 child RMS patients. Protein concentration of CYPs was determined using Western blot. The expression levels were tested for correlation with the clinical and pathological data of the patients. Our data showed that the expression levels of CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 were negligible. Elevated expression of CYP1B1 mRNA and protein was detected in most RMS tumors and adjacent normal tissues. Most cancerous samples exhibit higher levels of both CYP3A4 and CYP3A5 compared with normal tissue samples. Expression of CYP2E1 mRNA was found to be significantly higher in tumor tissue, however no relation was found with protein levels. CYP2W1 mRNA and/or protein are mainly expressed in tumors. In conclusion, we defined the CYP gene expression profile in tumor and paired normal tissue of child patients with RMS. The overexpression of CYP2W1, CYP3A4 and CYP3A5 in tumor tissues suggests that they may be involved in RMS chemoresistance; furthermore, they may be exploited for the localized activation of anticancer prodrugs.

En México la deficiencia marginal de algunas vitaminas y minerales afecta la salud y la funcionalidad de un número elevado de mexicanos, por lo que la Secretaría de Salud ha iniciado un programa para promover la adición de nutrimentos a las harinas de trigo y de maíz que se procesan industrialmente. El presente documento expone las bases científicas y tecnológicas para dicha adición. El objetivo primordial es restaurar los nutrimentos que se pierden durante el proceso de obtención de las harinas y durante la fabricación de los alimentos a partir de las harinas; además, se adicionan aquellos nutrimentos cuya presencia es deficiente en una proporción importante de la población y cuya suplementación en la dieta ha demostrado ser benéfica en la salud y la funcionalidad de la población. En la definición de la fórmula para adicionar a las harinas de trigo y maíz se consideraron, además de los factores mencionados, los niveles de absorción de los diferentes nutrimentos, la interacción probable entre nutrimentos y un malgar muy amplio de seguridad, de manera que se eliminara cualquier riesgo de algún efecto adverso en la salud, aun en los niveles más altos de ingestión de los alimentos. Finalmente, se sugieren los compuestos más apropiados para la adición a las harinas considerando su reactividad y sus posibles efectos negativos en la estabilidad de las harinas, así como su biodisponibilidad, su disponibilidad en el mercado y su costo. Con lo anterior se recomienda la adición de 5 mg/kg de tiamina (mononitrato de tiamina), 3 mg/kg de riboflavina (hidroclorhidrato de riboflavina), 35 mg/kg de niacina (nicotinamida), 30 mg/kg de hierro (hierro reducido extrafino) y 20 mg/kg de zinc (óxido de zinc) para ambas harinas, así como 2 mg/kg y 0.5 mg/kg de ácido fólico para las harinas de trigo y maíz, respectivamente.In Mexico, marginal micronutrient deficiency is widespread and affects the health status and function of many Mexicans. A program to add nutrients to corn and wheat flour has been promoted by the Ministry of Health. This document describes the scientific and technological bases of the program. The main objective is to restore the nutrients which are lost during cereal processing to obtain flour and food products. Also, certain nutrients which are known to be deficient in a high proportion of Mexicans, and which should be supplemented in the diet for the benefit of the population are also included. In the definition of the formula to be added to flours various other factors were considered such as the absorption levels of the nutrients, potential interactions among them and a wide range of security to eliminate the risk of an adverse effect on health even at the highest level of food intake. Finally, the most appropriate compounds to be added to flours are suggested considering their reactivity and their possible negative effects on the stability of flour, as well as the bioavailability, market availability and cost. The recommended compounds were 5 mg/kg of thiamine (thiamine mononitrate), 3 mg/kg of riboflavin (riboflavin hydrochlorhidrate), 35 mg/kg of niacine (nicotinamide), 30 mg/kg of iron (extrafine reduced iron) and 20 mg/kg of zinc (zinc oxide) for both types of flour, as well as 2 mg/kg and 0.5 mg/kg of folic acid for wheat and corn flour, respectively.

The aim of this study was to explore the relation between the problematic consumption of drugs and some variables: age, time of imprisonment, education, legal situation, committing a crime under drugs effect and number of visits received. Data of inmates who had accepted they were consuming drugs at the moment of doing the study was analyzed. It was found that the problematic consumers were younger and had less time of imprisonment. The inmates with less education, the ones who were being processed at the moment of doing the study, the ones who had committed crimes under the drugs effect and the ones who did not receive any visit showed more problems (measured through the DAST questionnaire) associated to the consumption. Some hypotheses about the results are discussed.

Although clinical presentation of fibrillary glomerulonephritis is similar to most forms of glomerulonephritis, it is usually difficult to make the diagnosis. Clinical manifestations include proteinuria, microscopic haematuria, nephrotic syndrome, and impairment of renal function. A diagnosis of fibrillary glomerulonephritis is only confirmed by renal biopsy and it must comprise electronmicroscopy-verified ultrastructural findings. We report four cases between 45–50 years old with documented type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and arterial hypertension. All patients were found to have fibrils on kidney biopsy. The differential diagnosis of fibrils in the setting of diabetes mellitus is also discussed.

Homologous recombination is a DNA repair mechanism that additionally generates a biological diversity. Most of our knowledge about it was obtained from assays that used double strand ends as initiators of recombination. The present work is aimed at evaluating homologous recombination in bacteria, using an assay based on the segregation of chromosomal duplication. This assay measures exchanges between sister strands without favoring any pathway. A collection of strains of Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium deficient in genes coding for proteins involved in homologous recombination was built. We evaluated spontaneous (SSR) and UV-induced segregation rate (UV-ISR). We demonstrated that the absence of RuvC resolvase did not affect SSR, while defects in RecA, RecQ and RecB/RecF decreased it and the lack of SbcCD or RuvAB stimulated it. In RecB null mutants, lesions that are not commonly sensed by RecFOR seem to have been recognized and repaired by this pathway. The methodology supported the corroboration of a RecA-independent pathway in Salmonella and suggests the existence of alternative recombination pathways in recB/recF double mutants.
