Abstract

The reaction anti-proton + proton -> anti-\Lambda + \Lambda -> anti-proton + \pi^+ + proton + \pi^- has been measured with high statistics at anti-proton beam momentum of 1.637 GeV/c. The use of a transversely-polarized frozen-spin target combined with the self-analyzing property of \Lambda/anti-\Lambda decay allows access to unprecedented information on the spin structure of the interaction. The most general spin-scattering matrix can be written in terms of eleven real parameters for each bin of scattering angle, each of these parameters is determined with reasonable precision. From these results all conceivable spin-correlations are determined with inherent self-consistency. Good agreement is found with the few previously existing measurements of spin observables in anti-proton + proton -> anti-\Lambda + \Lambda near this energy. Existing theoretical models do not give good predictions for those spin-observables that had not been previously measured., Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. C. Abstract

Spin transfer observables for the strangeness-production reaction Antiproton-Proton -> Antilambda-Lambda have been measured by the PS185 collaboration using a transversely-polarized frozen-spin target with an antiproton beam momentum of 1.637 GeV/c at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring at CERN. This measurement investigates observables for which current models of the reaction near threshold make significantly differing predictions. Those models are in good agreement with existing measurements performed with unpolarized particles in the initial state. Theoretical attention has focused on the fact that these models produce conflicting predictions for the spin-transfer observables D_{nn} and K_{nn}, which are measurable only with polarized target or beam. Results presented here for D_{nn} and K_{nn} are found to be in disagreement with predictions from existing models. These results also underscore the importance of singlet-state production at backward angles, while current models predict complete or near-complete triplet-state dominance., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In the large COMPASS polarized proton target the 1508 cm$^{3}$ of irradiated granular ammonia is polarized with dynamic nuclear polarization method using 4 mm microwaves in 2.5 T eld. The nuclear polarization up to 90 - 93 % is determined with cw NMR. The properties of the observed ammonia proton signals are described and spin thermodynamics in high elds is presented. Also the second moment of the NMR line is estimated.

Abstract

The COMPASS (NA58) experiment at CERN operates with a large solid polarized target (PT) to study the spin structure of the nucleon. The COMPASS PT system started its operation with the target material (LiD)-Li-6 in 2001. Deuteron polarizations of +54.2% and -47.1% were achieved in a He-3/He-4 dilution refrigerator at a magnetic field of 2.5 T. The equal spin temperature (EST) concept was found to hold among the deuteron, the Li-6 and the Li-7 nuclei during the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) process. The agreement with the EST concept allows the permanent monitoring of only one nuclear species by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The helicity dependence of the total cross section for the reaction has been measured for the first time at incident photon energies from 400 to 800 MeV. The measurement was performed with the large acceptance detector DAPHNE at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz. This channel is found to be excited predominantly when the photon and proton have a parallel spin orientation, due to the intermediate production of the D13 resonance. peerReviewed

Abstract

Abstract

With the help of systematic EPR and NMR studies under various conditions the polarization properties of some established target materials could be considerably improved. In [sup 6]LiD preliminary polarization results of the still ongoing investigations are 52 % at 150 mk and 18% at 1 K both at a magnetic field of 2.5T. Radiation doped d-butanol was polarized up to 48% and 13% under the same conditions. Additionally first investigations were started into a group of materials, the alkanes, which have not been tested for polarization purposes so far. Difficulties specific to these compounds could be overcome with the result of promising +16.2%/-13.5 % at 1 K/2.5 T in a hybrid sample of chemically doped n-pentane/butanol. In this context new insights could be also gained into the polarization physics of radiation doped polyethylene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
