1. Breeding and agronomic performance of new smooth bromegrass cultivar Kruševački 46 (K-46)

Abstract

Smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) is rhizomatous perennial forage grass species spread all over Serbia, mostly beside the roads and at the edges of semi-xerophylous or xerophylous natural grasslands. Stabile and high forage yield, classify Smooth bromegrass in a group of forage grasses suitable for mixtures composing for drought conditions and poor soils in agro-ecological conditions of Serbia. It can be used traditionally for hay production, but also in quality mixtures with legumes for silage or haylage production. Cultivar K-46 is created by multiple phenotypic recurrent selection of populations collected across central Serbia. The main breeding goal was developing of genotypes of Bromus inermis with improved yield and chemical composition of dry matter. Since this grass species generally have been characterised with a lot of large but indelicate leaves, improvement of its biomass quality requires breeding of leaf parameters (size, number, position, etc.). In plot trial on three locations in two years period (2015 and 2016) cultivar K-46 reached average DMY of 6400 kg ha-1. The average height of plants at the moment of cutting was 81.6 cm. Crude protein content was 11.61 g kg-1 of dry matter in the first cut and 13.51 g kg-1 in the second cut, which represents the good quality of grass biomass. New cultivar K-46, which is registered in December 2017, is suitable for mixtures composing for long-lasting and durable grasslands on light, marginal and dry soils. It stabilises land and produces enough amount of quality herbage which can be used with legumes species as complete forage meal for ruminants. It is adapted for cutting and tolerates dry, poor and eroded soils, therefore it shows best results on grasslands on hilly mountainous areas.

2. Determination of relevant parameters in the red clover seed processing (Trifolium pratense L.)

Abstract

The paper presents the results of the seed processing of the natural red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) seed with different initial purity in the seed processing center in the Institute for forage crops in Kruševac. Seeds of red clover for sowing must be clean, with high germination and high genetic value. Most of these requirements can be achieved through the seed processing, by the removal of impurities and seeds of poorer quality. In this process, there are number of technical-technological operations such as: cleaning, declarations, packaging in appropriate wrapping material and storage. The task of cleansing seeds is to remove all other seeds, weeds, impurities and extracts pure seed of the basic culture. In this way, the seed is prepared in a timely manner for good germination, sprouting, and cropping. During the processing of the red clover seeds, the relevant parameters on the equipment were determined: pure seed (%), weeds and seed of other cultures (%), inert matter (%), amount of processed seed (kg), seed losses (%) and processing output of the seed processing (%). The losses of red clover seeds in seed processing are in direct dependence on the type and quantity of weeds and other impurities present in the natural seed. On the basis of the obtained results, it is possible to optimally adjust and select the appropriate equipment for the red clover processing, depending on the quantity and type of weeds and other ingredients in the natural red clover seeds.

Abstract

One of the most important criteria in breeding process of perennial grasses is maturity. Cultivars with different maturity play a very important role in utilization of perennial grasses, by providing the ability to create a mixture of different aspects utilization and time. The first grass species in Serbia whose breeding program involved this criterion was cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.). In general cocksfoot is early to medium-early in maturity in comparison with other grasses and legumes, and that is mayor problem since in the optimum phase for cutting, cocksfoot is often earlier then other species in mixtures. As a result of this work, in the previous period, two cultivars of different maturity were released, Kruševačka 24 (K-24) and Kruševačka 25 (K-25). K-24 is medium and K-25 is late in maturity. New material is adapted to local agro-ecological conditions and productive in the same time. In breeding process of both cultivars initial material originated from autochthonous populations collected in eastern and central Serbia. Material from the wild flora is selected based on medium and late maturity which is already adapted and has good productivity. We applied the standard method of phenotypic recurrent selection with the creation of synthetic varieties by polycross.

Abstract

Due to historical background of vegetation development, geographical position, climate and relief, Serbia represents one of the 158 world biodiversity centres, based upon the number of plant species and territory size (biodiversity index 0.72). Large areas in Serbia are under natural grasslands and pastures, composed of forage grass species, and important as source of natural plant genetic diversity and germplasm for breeding. These eco-systems represent basic prerequisites for sustainable forage production, but very low potential of them is utilized and genetic resources are not protected. Family Poaceae is present in Serbia flora with 70 genera and among them from the aspect of forage production and quality, the most important are perennial Festuca, Lolium, Dactylis, Phleum, Bromus, Arrhenatherum, Poa and Agrostis species. Most of these grasses have been bred in Serbia and lot of cultivars were released. These cultivars contain autochthonous Serbian material and represent great and important resource of genetic variability. Therefore, collecting of new samples which are acclimatised to local eco-geographical conditions and including them in plant ex situ gene bank is of exceptional importance for further utilization in different plant breeding programmes as well as genetic resources protection. These autochthonous populations have natural variability and very often have satisfactory yielding performance in comparison with introduced cultivars, which referred them for direct phenotypic selection for cultivars release. Broadening of forage grasses genotypes collection is permanent objective of Serbian scientists. Collected accessions are being characterized and evaluated for important phenological, morphological and agronomical traits. In this paper genetic resources of forage grass species, their diversity and potentials, state of the grasses gene banks, as well as possibility for breeding of new cultivars has been analysed.

Abstract

Owing to its characteristics, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is important for the production of high-quality fodder. Its seed yields vary widely and are heavily influenced by environmental factors. The synchronization of alfalfa seed harvest requirements with environmental factors is partially possible through the cutting system. The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of a cutting schedule on the germination and size of alfalfa seeds. The pre-cutting time did not significantly affect the absolute mass within a 1 pre-cut system, whereas the number of pre-cuts had a reducing impact on the absolute mass within a 2 pre-cut system. The cutting system had no significant effects on seed germination. While the ecological conditions during the year had significant impacts, the lowest seed germination was recorded in the year with the highest rainfall during the summer period.

16. Assessment of quality and chemical composition of continental halophytic grasslands in south-east Europe

Abstract

Continental halophytic grasslands are known for performing of range of ecosystem services especially remarkable in the regions where they are much distributed – in arid and semi-arid areas. Continental halophytic grasslands of the Central and South-East Europe are not considered as favourable for arable farming, however, traditional animal husbandry plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and preserving these natural habitats. The particular interest of this study is the assessment of the chemical composition of biomass and the quality of insufficiently studied halophytic grassland communities of the central Balkans. In addition, the differences in pastoral value were monitored along the geographical gradient, i.e., between grasslands situated in the Pannonian plain (grasslands of Alliance Puccinellion limosae) and those distributed on the south Serbia (Alliance Festucion pseudovinae). The study was carried out at 18 representative sites, focusing on the saline grasslands of the two distinct regions – on the north and on the south of Serbia. The obtained results show that the halophytic grasslands have satisfying quality characteristics (average values: dry matter - 93.67%, crude protein - 8.66%, cellulose - 30.36%, crude fat - 2.27%) compared with other studied grasslands of saline habitats. There were no significant differences in quality and chemical composition of grasslands of the two regions, despite differences in floristic composition, indicating that salinity is the key determinant for pastoral value of the halophytic vegetation. The certain variations were attributed to the specific floristic composition related to ecological conditions and halophytic community characteristics.

18. Changes in the infrared attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectra of lignins from alfalfa stem with growth and development

Abstract

Lignin is a poorly characterized polymer and its exact properties vary depending on both the species of the plant and its location within the plant. Three classes of lignins taken from alfalfa stem were examined. The investigation was concentrated on the determination of chemical changes in the lignins during growth and development by the attenuated total reflectance (ATR) infrared (IR) spectrometric technique. The spectrum of permanganate lignin was comparable to that of acid detergent lignin. The main differences were in the different relative absorbance of the peaks. The predominant component of acid detergent lignin and permanganate lignin was guaiacyl-type lignin. The predominant component of Klason lignin was syringyl-type lignin. A comparison between the signals from lignin in different development stages revealed the appearance of new peaks, which are indications of new bonds and changes in the structure of the lignins.

Abstract

During summer and autumn, easily recognizable diseased plants can be detected in alfalfa fields. Diseased plants have characteristically curved apical part, commonly known as 'shepard's hook'. Using the standard mycological methods, several fungi isolates were obtained. Four of these isolates were used for further study. Two standard mycological methods were used for determination of pathogenicity of Colletotrichum spp. isolates: with and without damaging of the stems. During these studies, it was determined that all of the isolates were causing the symptoms of alfalfa anthracnose. All of the selected isolates form germinative bodies - acervulae - on mycelium. Acervulae can be grouped or scattered across the colony area. Their size in the culture was 100-250 mm. Conidia were short, cylindrical, relatively broad, with both end obtuse 7,85 x 3,85 mm. Appressoria were ovate to obovoid, pale to medium brown 7,5-16,5 x 5,5-8,9 μm.

21. VARIABILITY OF MEADOW FESCUE ACCESSIONS AND PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY OF THEIR POLYCROSS PROGENIES.

Abstract

The collection investigated included nineteen meadow fescue accessions, 16 wild populations, and 3 commercial cultivars. The first part of the experiment was performed in a plant nursery at a distance plant of plant 60x60 cm. The experiment was done as a randomized block design with 30 plants per accession. This part of the experiment aimed to determine values and variability for the studied traits (heading date, plant height, length of leaf and the number of generative and vegetative tillers per plant and dry matter yield per plant) in two productive years. Data processing was done by ANOVA analyses. The obtained results show that the studied accessions had significant within and among variability for all parameters. The number of generative tillers per plant, plant height and leaf length positively affected dry matter yield per plant. The highest dry matter yield per plant was observed for accessions: FP 1 and FP 4, but the best ratio between dry matter yield and number of vegetative tillers per plant, traits that influenced dry matter quality, was scored for accessions FP 8, FP 7, FP 3, FP 10 and FP 16. The second part of the trial investigated the productivity and biomass quality of the best 26 progenies selected from the polycross field and formed from the plant with the best performance from the nursery. They are tested in plots 5x2 m, as a randomized block design, in 3 replications. The most productive progenies with high biomass quality originated from accession FP 8, FP 3 and FP 13. 22. The effect of melliferous bee (Apis mellifera carnica poll) and mechanical means on seed yield, yield components and quality of alfalfa seed (Medicago sativa L)

Abstract

Number of alfalfa pollinators in free pollination was investigated as well as effect of measures that promote pollination alfalfa (using sugar syrup and mechanical means). In first year of investigations, with higher precipitation, higher number of others pollinators (80,8) then honeybees (45,6) on alfalfa field was determined. In second year, there were much more honeybees (139,5) then all others alfalfa pollinators (12,37). Pollination improvement with sugar syrup had positive effect on seed yield and seed yield components since by this way more seeds were obtained compare to free pollination and by using mechanical means. Highest seed yield was obtained with sugar syrup (44,90 gm-2), with mechanical improvement of pollination 40,74 gm-2 and in free pollination 30,41 gm-2. As for yield components pollination improvement gave better results compare to free pollination. Pod setting and number of seeds per pod were especially significant compare to control. There were no statistically significant differences between free pollination and improved pollination for seed quality components (mass of 1000 seeds, energy of germination and germination ability).

Abstract

Strateški cilj projekta EUCLEG je smanjenje zavisnosti Evrope i Kine od uvoza proteina biljnog porekla, razvojem efikasnih startegija oplemenjivanja ekonomski najvažnijih leguminoza za ljudsku i životinjsku ishranu. Projekat se bavi poboljšanjem diversifikacije najznačajnijih legumoniza, povećanjem produktivnosti i stabilnosti prinosa i kvaliteta proteina u krmi (lucerka i crvena detelina), i zrnu (grašak, bob, soja). Tokom trajanja EUCLEG-a takođe će se istraživati potencijal za nove načine upotrebe krmnih biljaka u ljudskoj ishrani. EUCLEG projekat predstavlja jedinstvenu priliku i pionirski korak u testiranju najvažnijih leguminoza u različitim agroekološkim uslovima od mediteranske, kontinentalne klime pa sve do do hladnog nordijskog pojasa. Projekat se odvija na 2 kontinenta sa učešćem 38 elitnih naučnih institucija iz Evrope (26) i Kine (12).

Rad prikazuje rezultate ispitivanja pri doradi naturalnog semena crvene deteline (Trifolium pratense L.) različitih početnih čistoća u doradnom centru Instituta za krmno bilje u Kruševcu. Seme crvene deteline za setvu mora biti čisto, visoke klijavosti i genetske vrednosti. Najveći deo ovih zahteva je moguće ostvariti kroz doradu, odnosno odstranjivanjem nečistoća i semena lošijeg kvaliteta. Pri procesu dorade semena crvene deteline postoji veći broj tehničko-tehnoloških operacija kao što su: čišćenje, deklarisanje, pakovanje u odgovarajuću ambalažu i skladištenje. Zadatak čišćenja semena je da se iz naturalnog semena sa primesama odstrane sva semena drugih kultura, korovi, primese i izdvoji samo čisto seme osnovne kulture. Ovakvim načinom seme se blagovremeno priprema u povoljno stanje za kvalitetnu setvu, klijanje i nicanje. Relevantni parametri na mašinama za doradu određivani su pri procesu dorade semena crvene deteline. Određivani su sledeći parametri: čisto seme crvene deteline (%), seme korova i seme drugih kultura (%), inertne materije (%), količina dorađenog semena (kg), gubici semena (%) i randman dorade (%). Kod dorade semena crvene deteline gubici su u direktnoj zavisnosti od vrste i količine korova i ostalih nečistoća prisutnih u naturalnom semenu deteline, odnosno početne čistoće. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata ispitivanja moguće je izvršiti kvalitetno podešavanje i izbor odgovarajućih mašina za doradu semena crvene deteline, u zavisnosti od količine i vrste korova i primesa u naturalnom semenu crvene deteline.

Abstract

Background: Various microorganisms that can have a positive or negative effect on plant development are present in the rhizospheric soil of alfalfa. The research aimed to investigate the impact of two nitrogen-fixing bacteria and two species of the phytopathogen fungus Colletotrichum on the abundance of aminoheterotrophs, nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere of three cultivars of alfalfa. Methods: The experiment was carried in vegetation pots as three factorial, where the first factor was alfalfa cultivar (Affinity+Z, K-28 and Perry), the second was the isolate of phytopathogen fungus Colletotrichum: C. trifolii (isolate Coll 4) and C. destructivum (two isolates: Coll-11 and Coll 657); and the third was the variant of bacterial inoculation (Azotobacter chroococcum and Sinorhizobium meliloti). The number of microorganisms was determined by introducing a diluted soil suspension into proper media and counted per one gram of absolutely dry soil. Result: According to the Fisher test applied inoculation microbial inoculation with nitrogen-fixing bacteria and phytopathogen fungus had different effects on the abundance of examined microorganisms in rizospheric soil of different alfalfa cultivars. 26. Grouping of red clover genotypes based on parameters of chemical quality

Abstract

Red clover breeding is usually directed at improving productive traits, but recently it is also oriented to the quality traits, including the content and the stability of proteins, content of soluble carbohydrates and digestibility of cell wall. Th e main part of the structural carbohydrates is found in the plant cell walls, and it is defi ned through the concept of fi ber. Th e parameters ADF (acid detergent fi ber) and NDF (neutral detergent fi ber) represent fi ber fractions that are only partially available to animals and which are indicators of the consumption and digestibility of the dry matter. Th e aim of this study was determination of the crude protein, ADF and NDF content for 46 red clover varieties and populations, classifi cation of genotypes based on the estimated quality parameters and selection of the most promising genotypes for further breeding. On the basis of these three parameters, the analyzed red clover genotypes were clearly grouped into two clusters, while one cluster was without subclusters and the another one was composed of two subclusters. Classifi cation of genotypes, as well as group composition based on the analysis of quality parameters, may be important for understanding the variability of genotypes at the quality level and for future breeding programs for quality improvement.

Abstract

Na oglednom polju su sprovedena dvogodišnja istraživanja združene setve kukuruza i sirka sa sojom u postrnoj setvi. Pored istraživanja na oglednom polju, kasnije su vršena demonstriranja združene setve kukuruza i soje na imanjima farmera. Demonstracije su imale (i) eksperimentalnu funkciju - čiji je cilj da se proceni efektivnost inovacije u proizvodnim uslovima; (ii) pokaznu funkciju - čiji je cilj da olakša difuziju inovacija prema drugim farmerima. U nastavku su prikazani rezultati koji su dobijeni u istraživanjima na oglednom polju. U objašnjenju tehnološkog rešenja i mogućnosti primene su uključeni i nalazi u ispitivanjima na gazdinstvima.

Large areas in Serbia are under natural grasslands and pastures, composed of forage grass species, and important as source of natural plant genetic diversity and germplasm for breeding. These eco-systems represent basic prerequisites for sustainable forage production, but very low potential of them is utilized and genetic resources are not protected. Family Poaceae is present in Serbia flora with 70 genera and among them from the aspect of forage production and quality, the most important are perennial Festuca, Lolium, Dactylis, Phleum, Bromus, Arrhenatherum, Poa and Agrostis species. Most of these grasses have been bred in Serbia and lot of cultivars were released. These cultivars contain autochthonous Serbian material and represent great and important resource of genetic variability. Therefore, collecting of new samples which are acclimatised to local eco-geographical conditions and including them in plant ex situ gene bank is of exceptional importance for further utilization in different plant breeding programmes as well as genetic resources protection. These autochthonous populations have natural variability and very often have satisfactory yielding performance in comparison with introduced cultivars, which referred them for direct phenotypic selection for cultivars release. Broadening of forage grasses genotypes collection is permanent objective of Serbian scientists. Collected accessions are being characterized and evaluated for important phenological, morphological and agronomical traits. In this paper genetic resources of forage grass species, their diversity and potentials, state of the grasses gene banks, as well as possibility for breeding of new cultivars has been analysed., Zahvaljujući svojoj geografskoj poziciji, klimi i reljefu, Srbija po broju biljnih vrsta i veličini teritorije (indeks biodiverziteta 0,72), predstavlja jedan od 158 svetskih centara biodiverziteta. Prirodne livade i pašnjaci zauzimaju značajne površine u Srbiji, veoma su bogate krmnim travnim vrstama i predstavljaju važan izvor germplazme za proces oplemenjivanja. Ovi ekosistemi predstavljaju osnovu za održivu stočarsku proizvodnju, pa iako se relativno male površine intenzivno koriste, javlja se potreba za očuvanjem postojećih, izuzetno bogatih, genetičkih resursa. Familija Poaceae je zastupljena u flori Srbije sa 70 rodova, a među njima, sa aspekta proizvodnje kvalitetne stočne hrane, najvažnije su vrste rodova Festuca, Lolium, Dactylis, Phleum, Bromus, Arrhenatherum, Poa i Agrostis. Veliki broj vrsta navedenih rodova je uključen u proces oplemenjivanja, a početni material za brojne registrovane sorte su bile uglavnom autohtone populacije, koje se odlikuju visokom varijabilnošću za mnoge osobine. Prikupljanje novih uzoraka, koji su tolerantni na lokalne eko-geografske uslove i njihovo uključivanje u biljnu banku gena, je od velikog značaja za dalje iskorišćavanje u različitim oplemenjivačkim programima, pa je stalno proširenje postojeće kolekcije krmnih trava permanentna aktivnost oplemenjivača u Srbiji. Prirodne populacije imaju visoku varijabilnost i veoma često zadovoljavajuće komponente prinosa u odnosu na postojeće sorte, što ih nakon karakterizacije i evaluacije važnih fenoloških, morfoloških i agronomskih osobina, preporučuje za direktno uključivanje u process selekcije. U ovom radu su predstavljeni genetički resursi krmnih trava, njihova divergentnost i potencijal, stanje u banci gena, kao i mogućnost kreiranja novih sorti.

Trifolium: T. pratense L., T. repens L., T. hybridum L., T. pannonicum Jack. и T. montanum L. Свака врста је била заступљена са већим бројем самониклих популација (минимално 5), различитог географског порекла унутар простора Републике Србије. Праћено је десет морфолошких параметара на појединачним биљкама које су узгајане у пољским условима. Састав суве материје утврђен је из просечног узорка Weende системом анализе. Анатомске карактеристике листа одређиване су анализом трајних препарата попречних пресека средње лиске тролиска (5 понављања по популацији). Садржај секундарних метаболита утврђен је применом спектрофотометријске методе (укупни феноли, флавоноиди и антиоксидативна активност), као и HPLC методом (изофлавони: даидзеин, генистеин, биоханин А и формононетин). Сви подаци обрађени су у програму Статистика 10 (StatSoft). Утврђено је постојање варијабилности проучаваног материјала. Разлике су се јавиле по свим групама особина, између врста, али и унутар врста (разлике између популација). Упоредном анализом је показано да је највиши просечан принос зелене масе по биљци (820 g) као и највећи број изданака (73.3) у двогодишњем истраживању дала је шведска детелина (T. hybridum); док су најмање вредности испољене код T. montanum (зелена маса – 55.07 g и 12.2 изданка). Ово су и најваријабилније особине, јер коефицијент варијације показује нашири опсег вредности. Шведска детелина (T. hybridum) се такође одликује највећим бројем интернодија (6.76 просек за две године) и највећим бројем бочних грана (6.55 просек за две године). Принос зелене масе опада из године у годину код црвене (T. pratense) и шведске детелине (T. hybridum), док код осталих врста расте или нема статистички значајних промена, што је случај са T. montanum..., Morphological, anatomical and chemical traits of five species of the genus Trifolium were studied. Researched species included: T. pratense L., T. repens L., T. hybridum L., T. pannonicum Jack., and T. montanum L. In the experimental study, each species was represented by a high number of wild population (at least 5) of a different geographical origin within the area of the Republic of Serbia. Ten morphological parameters were studied on individual plants grown in the field conditions. The composition of dry matter was determined from the average sample by Weende analysis system. Leaf anatomical traits were studied by analzses of the cross section of middle leaflet of trifoliate leaves (5 repetitions per population). The content of secondary metabolites was determined by spectrophotometry (total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity) and HPLC (isoflavones: daidzein, genistein, biohanin A and formononetin). All data were processed in the computer program Statistika 10 (StatSoft). It was determined that there is expressed variability in the studied material. There were differences in all groups of traits, both inter- and intra-species (differences between populations). The comparative analysis showed that the highest average yield of green mass per plant (820 g) as well as the largest number of tillers (73.3), in the two-year study, was obtained in the Swedish clover (T. hybridum), while T. montanum exhibited the lowest values (weight was 55.07 g and the number of tillers was 12.2). These were the most variable traits upon the coefficients of variation. Alsike clover (T. hybridum) was characterized by the highest number of internodes (6.76 average for two years) and the highest number of side branches (6.55 average for two years). Yield of green mass decreased from year to year in the red clover (T. pratense) and alsike clover (T. hybridum), while in the other studied species it increased or had no statistically significant change such in the case of T. montanu

Abstract

Owing to its characteristics, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is important for the production of high-quality fodder. Its seed yields vary widely and are heavily influenced by environmental factors. The synchronization of alfalfa seed harvest requirements with environmental factors is partially possible through the cutting system. The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of a cutting schedule on the germination and size of alfalfa seeds. The pre-cutting time did not significantly affect the absolute mass within a 1 pre-cut system, whereas the number of pre-cuts had a reducing impact on the absolute mass within a 2 pre-cut system. The cutting system had no significant effects on seed germination. While the ecological conditions during the year had significant impacts, the lowest seed germination was recorded in the year with the highest rainfall during the summer period., Plava lucerka (Medicago sativa L.) je zbog svih svojih osobina značajna u proizvodnji kvalitetne kabaste hrane. Prinosi semena u Srbiji jako variraju u zavisnosti od godine i kreću se, od onih koji ne opravdavaju troškove žetve, do preko 1000 kg ha-1, dok se u glavnim proizvodnim reonima u svetu beleže stabilniji prinosi. Različitim vremenom kosidbe predotkosa moguće je delimično upravljati vremenom cvetanja semenskog otkosa i na taj način uticati na sinhronizaciju cvetanja i oprašivanja, formiranja mahuna, sazrevanja i žetve sa periodom godine kada postoje najpovoljniji uslovi za to. Cilj ovih istraživanja je da se u poljskim uslovima ispita uticaj vremena kosidbe na klijavost i krupnoću semena lucerke. Praćeni su uticaji različitih rokova kosidbe prvog predotkosa u proizvodnji semena iz drugog otkosa i uticaj dva predotkosa u proizvodnji semena iz trećeg otkosa. Vreme predotkosa u sistemu sa jednim predotkosom nije značajno uticalo na apsolutnu masu, dok je u varijanti sa dva predotkosa ostvarena manja apsolutna masa. Posmatrano zajedno u trogodišnjem periodu ostvarena je prosečno masa 1000 semena od 1,92 g, a apsolutna masa se kretala u intervalu od 1,75 g do 2,07 g. Sistem kosidbe nije imao značajan uticaja na klijavost semena. Ekološki uslovi u toku godine imali su značajan utiacaj na klijavost i najmanja klijavost je ostavrena u godini sa najviše padavina u letnjem periodu. Prosečna klijavost je iznosila 82,11%, sa variranjem od 71,50% do 88,40%.

31. Study of red clover wild populations from the territory of Serbia for the purpose of pre-selection

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to evaluate the agronomic value of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) wild populations. The analyzed material was gathered on the territory of Serbia and it was estimated which populations could be involved in the breeding program. 17 red clover populations were included in the research. Investigation was carried out at the experimental field of the Institute for forage crops, Krusevac, Serbia. The field trial was performed during three years (2008 - 2010) when data about morphological (green mass, dry mater, plant height, number of stems, number of lateral branches, number of internodes, length and width of a middle leaf lamina) and basic chemical parameters (quantity of crude proteins, crude fiber, ash, fat, NFE) were collected. In this paper, results of the research were processed by application of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariation methods. Cluster analysis based on morphological traits resulted in formation of three clusters and the traits with the largest influence on grouping were: green mass, plant height, length and width of a leaf. Principal component method confirmed this separation and resulted in even more clear grouping of populations. Cluster analysis and PCA method were also applied to the traits of dry matter quality, when four clusters were formed, and the traits with the largest influence on grouping were percentages of protein, fat and fiber. Using both set of traits and several types of analyses contribute to grouping of populations which promise most and whose positive traits such as: high green mass yield, number of stems as well as the percentage of proteins can be combined for the purpose of getting synthetic varieties.

Abstract

The paper reviews the results of breeding and quantitative traits of domestic cultivars of alfalfa, red clover, birdefoot trefoil, white clover and esparcet. Using different sources of genetic variability and appropriate breeding methods, 24 alfalfa cultivars, 10 red clover cultivars, 5 birdefoot trefoil cultivars, and one cultivar of each white clover and esparcet have been developed. Based on long-term trials conducted under the different agroecological conditions of the country, it was concluded that the domestic perennial legumes have high production potentials for yields of green forage (OF) and dry matter (DM). The domestic alfalfa cultivars produced on average 65.6 t ha-1 OF, or 15.3 t ha-1 DM. DM quality was very good - the average content of crude proteins (CP) was 199.6 g ka-1 DM, crude cellulose (CC) 261.8 g ka-1 DM and Pi-free extract (BEM) 392.0 g ka-1 DM. The respective average values for the red clover cultivars were 52.4 t ha-1 OF, 11.2 t ha-1 DM, 195.6 g kg-1 CP, 220.4 g ka-1 CC and 440.8 g kg-1 BEM. The respective average values for the birdsfoot trefoil cultivars were 52.9 t ha-1 QF, 14.1 t ha-1 DM, 199.7 g ka-1 CP, 274.8 g ka-1 CC and 397.7 g ka-1 BEM. Although the white clover cultivar K-33 and the esparcet cultivar Krajina were first of their kind developed in our country, their production potentials and quality were very good. U radu se ističu rezultati oplemenjivanja i kvantitativna svojstva domaćih sorti lucerke, crvene deteline, žutog zvezdana, bele deteline i esparzete. Korišćenjem različitih izvora genetičke varijabilnosti i odgovarajućih metoda oplemenjivanja u Srbiji su priznate 24 sorte lucerke, 10 crvene deteline, pet žutog zvezdana i po jedna sorta bele deteline i esparzete. Na osnovu višegodišnjih rezultata istraživanja, u veoma različitim agroekološkim uslovima domaće sorte višegodišnjih leguminoza se odlikuju visokim proizvodnim potencijalom za prinos zelene krme (ZK), odnosno suve materije (SM). Sa domaćim sortama lucerke ostvareno je prosečno 65,6 t ha-1 ZK odnosno 15,3 t ha-1 SM. Kvalitet SM je bio veoma dobar, a ostvareno je prosečno sirovih proteina (SP) 199,6 g kg-1 SM, sirove celuloze (SC) 261,8 g kg-1 SM i udeo bezazotnih ekstraktivnih materija (BEM) 392,0 g kg-1 SM. Sa sortama crvene deteline ostvareno je prosečno 52,4 t ha-1 ZK, odnosno 11,2 t ha-1 SM sa udelom SP 195,6 g kg-1 SM, SC 220,4 g kg-1 i BEM 440,8 g kg-1 SM. Sorte žutog zvezdana su ispoljile visok proizvodni potencijal za prinos biomase (52,9 t ha-1 ZK, odnosno 14,1 t ha-1 SM) vrlo dobrog kvaliteta suve materije (SP 199,7 g kg-1 SM, SC 274,8 g kg-1 SM, BEM 397,7 g kg-1 SM). I pored toga što sorta bele deteline K-33 i esparzeta Krajina predstavljaju početne rezultate u oplemenjivanju ovih biljaka, one se odlikuju vrlo dobrim proizvodnim potencijalom za prinos biomase i kvalitetom suve materije.

Abstract

Review and results of research focusing on genetic resources and improvement of forage plants in Serbia and Montenegro (SMN) are presented in this paper. SMN is extremely rich on natural (native/autochthonous) genetic resources of different forage species. Great number of cultivars of perennial grass and leguminous plants as well as annual forage plants were created in SMN as a result of research work carried out over several decades. Domestic cultivars of forage plants have first of all high productive potential for yield of forage and quality of dry matter. U ovom radu dat je pregled i rezultati istraživanja na genetičkim resursima i oplemenjivanju krmnih biljaka u Srbiji i Crnoj Gori (SCG). SCG predstavlja izuzetno bogat izvor prirodnih (autohtonih) genetičkih resursa naročito vrsta krmnih biljaka. Veći broj gajenih sorti krmnih biljaka za stočnu hranu ima svoje srodnike u prirodnim livadskim zajednicama. U više decenijskom radu na oplemenjivanju krmnih biljaka stvoren je veliki broj sorti višegodišnjih trava i leguminoza i jednogodišnjih krmnih kultura sa visokim proizvodnim potencijalom za prinos krme vrlo dobrog kvaliteta suve materije.

35. Karakterizacija vrsta roda Colletotrichum, prouzrokovača antraknoze lucerke u Srbiji i osetljivost genotipova

Abstract

U periodu 2005-2010. godine, pregledom 17 lokaliteta gajenja lucerke u Srbiji, zabeležena je pojava intenzivnih simptoma antraknoze na lucerki. Učestalost zaraze u ispitivanim usevima bila je visoka i dostizala je 30%. Sa ciljem da se rasvetli etiologija oboljenja i ispita uticaj gljiva roda Colletotrichum obavljena je analiza 150 uzoraka, dobijeno ukupno 80 izolata i 18 odabrano je za morfološku, biološku i molekularnu identifikaciju i analizu vegetativne kompatibilnosti. Na osnovu obavljenih istraživanja ustanovljeno je prisustvo tri vrste roda Colletotrichum na lucerki u Srbiji: C. trifolii, C. destructivum i Colletotrichum sp.-Coll-44. Sve proučavane osobine ispitivanih izolata analizirane su kao mogući taksonomski kriterijum za razlikovanje vrsta roda Colletotrichum. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata, za razvrstavanje vrsta preporučuje se uporedno korišćenje najmanje dva taksonomska kriterijuma, morfoloških osobina i molekularne karakterizacije. Analize nukleotidnih sekvenci tri genomna regiona, ITS region rDNK, intron gena GS i intron gena GPHD, pokazale su različit potencijal za preciznije razdvajanje vrsta roda Colletotrichum. Rekonstrukcijom tri filogenetska stabla dat je doprinos u rasvetljavanju filogenetske meñupovezanosti vrsta prisutnih u Srbiji sa ostalim vrstama ovog roda iz različitih delova sveta. Proučavanjem genetičkog diverziteta populacija C. trifolii, C. destructivum i Colletotrichum sp. izolat Coll-44, ukupno 18 monosporijalnih izolata svrstano je u sedam grupa vegetativne kompatibilnosti. Ova istraživanja ukazala su na postojanje genetičke varijabilnosti komercijalnih sorti lucerke u osetljivosti prema ispitivanim izolatima u kontrolisanim uslovima inokulacije, sa prevalentnim vrstama C. trifolii i C. destructivum. Genotipovi sa najnižim ispoljenim nivoom osetljivosti koristiće se u programima selekcije lucerke na otpornost., During the period of 2005-2010, a survey was conducted at 17 localities in Serbia and intense occurrence of alfalfa anthracnose was observed. The disease incidence in the tested crops was high and it reached 30%. With the aim to clarify the etiology of the disease and investigate the effect of Colletotrichum, 150 samples were analysed. Total of 80 isolates were obtained, among which 18 were selected for morphological, biological and molecular characterization and analysis of vegetative compatibility. The conducted research showed the presence of three species of Colletotrichum on alfalfa in Serbia: C. trifolii, C. destructivum and Colletotrichum sp. isolate Coll-44. All studied traits of the tested isolates were analyzed as a possible taxonomic criterion for distinguishing species of the genus Colletotrichum. Based on these results, for the identification of species, it is recommended to use at least two parallel taxonomic criteria, morphological traits and molecular characterization. Analysis of nucleotide sequences of the three genome regions, ITS region of rDNA, GS gene intron and GPHD gene intron, showed different potential for more precise Colletotrichum species separation. By reconstructing three phylogenetic trees, the contribution was given to the establishing the phylogenetic relationships among species present in Serbia, with other species from diferent parts of the world. By studying the genetic diversity of populations of C. trifolii, C. destructivum and Colletotrichum sp. isolate Coll-44, 18 monosporial isolates were distributed into seven vegetative compatibility groups. The studies revealed the existence of different levels of susceptibility with in commercial cultivars against tested isolates of prevalent species, C. trifolii and C. destructivum. Genotypes with the lowest susceptibility will be used in selection programs and improving alfalfa for resistance.

36. Differences in symbiotic N-2 fixation of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L. cultivars and Sinorhizobium spp. strains in field conditions

Abstract

In a two-year field trial, four alfalfa cultivars grown in all combinations with five strains of Sinorhizobium spp. were assessed for N-2-fixing potential and compatibility of symbionts with the aim to co-select plant and rhizobia as alternative approach to symbiotic N-2 fixation improvement. It was found that rhizobial strains, host cultivars and interactions between them had a highly significant effects on shoot dry weight (SDW), total and fixed N content of alfalfa. A significant variation in N-2 fixation effectiveness of rhizobial strains, from ineffective to significantly effective depending on cultivars and year of utilization was detected. Effective strains increased SDW by 49-114% (2010) and 35-86% (2011). In the first year the highest effectiveness had strain L5 with cultivars K-28 and BL-88 and strain L3Si with BL-88 while in the following year all applied strains were effective with different extent. Only one strain (L5) was effective with most of alfalfa cultivars over a two-year period. Percentage of N-2 fixed in plant mass for strain L5 was 33% in 2010, and 38% in 2011. In addition, one cultivar (BL-88) was identified to have superior symbiotic performances, exhibiting its high capacity for N-2 fixation. Results indicate that simultaneous selection of both symbionts should be applied for improvement of N-2 fixation in alfalfa.

37. Evaluation of morphological traits, dry matter yield and quality of Lolium perenne L. autochthonous populations from Serbia through multivariate analysis

Abstract

Due to specific climatic conditions, perennial ryegrass breeding in Serbia is focused on resistance or tolerance to abiotic stress factors, especially to drought and high temperatures. These traits should be associated with high dry matter yield and quality. Therefore, most frequently used initial material is autochthonous populations and ecotypes adapted to local agro-ecological conditions, but knowledge about their variability of important traits for breeding is missing. Pre-selection evaluation of ten populations of perennial ryegrass originating from Serbia is presented in this paper. Twenty five traits were investigated during the two-year period and processed using analysis of variance and multivariate statistical methods (cluster and principal components analysis). The goal was to determine diversity and genetic distances of investigated populations by phenotyping and to define traits considerably affecting the variability and discrimination of populations. On cluster diagram two groups of population are observed, but geographic origin of populations (lowland, hilly, mountainous habitat) was not influence to clustering of collection. Factor analysis has clarified that first seven principal components (PC) described almost 95%. The traits which show high correlation coefficients with first principal component were plant height in first cut, leaf length and width, DM of generative tillers, spike and spikelet length and 1000 seed weight, and with second principal component time of heading, terminal internode length, DM of vegetative tillers, spikelet number and FSU. It can be concluded that variability between populations was high and that differences of population were mainly affected by most important traits for breeding, such as components of dry matter production and some seed yield components., Usled specifičnih klimatskih uslova, oplemenjivanje engleskog ljulja u Srbiji je fokusirano na toleranciju abiotičkih faktora stresa, posebno na sušu i visoke temperature. Stoga se kao početni materijal u oplemenjivanju najčešće upotrebljavaju autohtone populacije i ecotipovi prilagođeni lokalnim agro-ekološkim uslovima. Međutim saznanja o varijabilnosti najvažnijih osobina kod autohtonih populacija su vrlo ćesto oskudna. U ovom radu su predstavljena proučavanja varijabilnosti osobina deset populacija engleskog ljulja poreklom iz Srbija. Dvadeset pet osobina je ispitivano tokom dve godine, a podaci su obrađeni analizom varijanse i multivarijacionim statističkim metodama (PCA i klaster analiza). Cilj je bio da se utvrdi raznovrsnost i genetička udaljenosti ispitivanih populacija fenotajpingom i da se definišu osobine koje značajno utiču na varijabilnost i grupisanje populacija. Klaster analizom utvrđene su dve grupe populacija, ali geografsko poreklo populacija (ravničarska, brdska i planinska staništa) nije uticalo na pomenuto grupisanje. Faktorska analiza je pokazala da prvih sedam glavnih komponenti (PC) opisuje 95% varijabilnosti. Osobine koje pokazuju visok koeficijent korelacije sa prvom glavnom komponentom su visina biljaka u prvom otkosu, dužina i širina lista, suva materija generativnih izdanaka, dušina klasa i klasića i težina 1000 semena. Utvrđena je visoka varijabilnost između populacija koja uglavnom potiču od oplemenjivački najvažnijih osobine, kao što su komponente prinosa suve materije i neke komponente prinosa semena.

Abstract

During three years period (2003-2005), in Serbia in higher number in alfalfa field observed losses about 30% green masses of alfalfa. From collected material from field, by standard mycological procedures, the great number of Colletotrichum spp. strains was isolated. Pathogenicity of five strains to consolidate that to cause rot in inoculate plant alfalfa. Inoculate characteristics are studied with six different mediums and six different temperatures. To consolidate the highest colony growth on the most isolates have been obtained on potato-dextrose agar, while the colony have had lowest grown on oat meal agar (tab. 2). Sporulation was abundant on all medium. Optimal growth temperature for observed isolates was 25° C. Very small growth was observed on 5° C for all isolates (tab.3). According to investigation of pathogenic and in culture characteristics selected strains, we can make a conclusion that these are Colletotrichum trifolii Bain et Essary, antracnose inducer in alfalfa. Abstract

Influence of honey bee and other pollinators on alfalfa and red clover pollination was investigated. In order to attract honey bee crop has sprayed by sugar syrup. Experiment was doing in 2005, in Dobricevo, Cuprija. Field with alfalfa and red clover were situated by each other. Alfalfa field size and red clover field size were 30 ha and 16 respectively. Twenty two honey bee colonies were included in pollination. Honey bee and other pollinators significantly higher visited red clover, then alfalfa. Number of pollinators scored on m² were 46,27 on alfalfa field and 19,93 on red clover field. Honey bee was dominant pollinators on both species (4:1 to compares with other pollinators). Alfalfa seed yield was 127,0 kg ha-1and red clover seed yield was 569,5 kg ha-1. Treatment with sugar syrup was resaulting in incresed of seed production for 8,9 % of alfalfa and 18 % of red clover. Abstract

Birdsfoot trefoil is a widespread perennial legume, which is very important in providing the protein component in forage grown on the low quality soils, especially in hilly-mountainous regions. The aim of this paper was to evaluate forage production and quality 12 birdsfoot trefoil genotypes, selected from domestic populations. Dry matter (DM) yield and plant height were determined by four cuts in the second and third year of utilization, while the quality parameters (crude protein, crude fiber, ether extract, N-free extract, ash) were determined only on the first cut, in the second year of exploitation. The results were analyzed by ANOVA. Variation in green matter yield (CV 7,7-10,2%) and dry matter yield (CV 9,0-9,7%) were higher, than the variation in plant height (CV 5.5%). Differences between genotypes in crude protein content (CV 10,0%), and for total yield of crude protein (CV 19,6%) were significant. Genotypes number 7, 10 and 3 obtained green matter and dry matter yield, as total crude protein yield as standard cultivar, and they are great source of variability for further breeding process. Abstract

During two years examination of half-sib and full-sib progenies of two selected diploid red clover populations (1 and 2) the results of variability structure and heritability for main traits were obtained. The following characteristics of red clover have been examined: dry matter yield per plant, plant height, number of tillers per plant, CPC, CFC and TSC. The values of phenotypic variance were higher than genetic variance for DMY, plant height and number of tillers per plant, while their values were the same (similar) for quality parameters. The values of genetic variance, their relation and structure for all characteristics hawe depended on genotype as wel as on the year of examination. Within population 1 for almost all examined features significant part of genetic variance was additive variance. On the other hand, within population 2, dominant variance is higher for the most number of traits. The narrow-sense heritability in the first year of investigation has greatly depended on genotype, while differences of heritability level between populations in the seccond year were not significant. The highest values of narrow-sense heritability were obtained for number of tillers per plant (0,47 in population 1 and 0,55 in population 2), while the highest broad-sense heritability were found for quality parameters (about 0,90).
