In recent years, forest fires have become an important issue in Central Europe. To model the probability of the occurrence of forest fires in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland, historical fire data and several types of predictors were collected or generated, including topographic, vegetation, climatic, and anthropogenic features. The main objectives of this study were to determine the importance of the predictors of forest fire occurrence and to map the probability of forest fire occurrence. The H2O driverless artificial intelligence (DAI) cloud platform was used to model forest fire probability. The gradient boosted machine (GBM) and random forest (RF) methods were applied to assess the probability of forest fire occurrence. Evaluation the importance of the variables was performed using the H2O platform permutation method. The most important variables were the presence of coniferous forest and the distance to agricultural land according to the GBM and RF methods, respectively. Model validation was conducted using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The areas under the curve (AUCs) of the ROC plots from the GBM and RF models were 83.3% and 81.3%, respectively. Based on the results obtained, the GBM model can be recommended for the mapping of forest fire occurrence in the study area.

Mountain forests constitute one of the most diverse ecosystems, not only in Europe but also all over the world. Mountain ranges, which frequently encompass multiple countries, constitute a unique link between various natural areas, which are very often completely different from the historical point, or which are characterized by different use and management types. Although the role of mountain forests is relatively well recognized nowadays, in the distant past, these areas were poorly penetrated, mainly due to the unfavourable climate and natural topography, which discouraged not only from settling down but also from moving around. Despite the fact that mountains had been the object of interest of mining, weaving, and glassmaking industries for hundreds of years, dramatic changes in the stands in these areas were sealed by the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. The purpose of this paper is the analysis of forest dieback process in the mountain ranges of Sudetes and Western Carpathians placed in Poland. Stress factors have been divided into three main groups, however, it should be remembered that it is a very simplified division and some factors could be partially found in the anthropogenic, as well as biotic, and even abiotic factor groups. Neither the beginning nor the end of deforestation process was defined precisely in the study, which was deliberate in taking into account constant changes in the ecosystems. Generally, three periods may be distinguished here, regarding the spruce forests dieback process. Typically anthropogenic deforestation, caused by the industrialization of the areas during the industrial revolution and earlier, deforestation in the years 1970–1980 and partially before the year 2000 (Western Carpathians) caused by a set of various stress factors and the latest period, that is, generally understood climate change. The last several years have particularly contributed to the expansion of detailed knowledge about the dependencies and the influence of abiotic, biotic, and anthropogenic factors on the health condition of spruce trees. Although models have already been developed, which describe the course of insect outbreaks, the growth and health condition of spruces, or climate factors, no model has been developed so far that would allow to depict the process of hitherto deforestation, and to enable modelling the forthcoming changes. It seems that the development of such tool, not only from the forest management point of view, would constitute a milestone on the way to precision forestry.

Forest dieback of mountainous areas is a common problem in almost all regions of the world. This process is characterized by high variability and is independent of whether the process is caused by climate changes, insect pests or human impact on the environment, particularly environmental pollution. This state of affairs is probably influenced not only by unusual atmospheric conditions, unusual stressors or species composition but also by many factors that have not been identified to date. Even in the case of relatively small mountainous areas in Central Europe with similar species composition, climatic conditions, and stressors, the process of tree dieback might have different characteristics and causes. During the analyses of such phenomena, remote sensing technologies, such as LiDAR and aerial imagery, which have become increasingly popular and precise, are helpful. Additionally, access to geographic information systems has become common by forest owners. Using previous research, as well as airborne laser scanning data, aerial imagery and Polish State Forests IT system (SILP) data, it was possible to analyze almost 200,000 dead trees inventoried in the areas of the Western Sudety, Eastern Sudety, Beskid Śląski and Beskid Żywiecki mountain ranges. Despite the fact these areas are located relatively close to each other, they differ in terms of forest structure and in terms of period of mass deforerstation. The impact of detailed landform, age, and species composition were considered, and complemented many other factors, which eventually enabled the development of three different models for each of the analyzed areas. The models depict the influence of the respective factors of the environment on Norway spruce dieback in the Central Europe mountains. The obtained results show that there are certain factors, such as e.g. age or stocking, which increase the probability of damage in all three areas, but certain ones are significant exclusively for one or two areas, such as e.g. altitude, which has an influence on the likelihood of damage only in the Western Sudety and the Western Beskidy Mountains. What is interesting, the altitude does not impact unequivocally on the share of dead spruces itself, since in the case of the Western and Eastern Sudety, the increase of altitude is positively correlated with the share, whereas in the case of the Western Beskidy Mountains, the correlation is negative. An important fact is that the increase of deciduous species’ share impacts positively on the forest dieback of spruces on all analyzed areas.

Background Supplementary feeding is a widespread but controversial practice in game management. While many studies have been conducted on this issue, there is limited empirical evidence on how feeding affects damage caused by wildlife. In this context, the present study focused on the effect of artificial winter feeding on tree damage in three mountain regions in Poland. Results The presence of additional winter food did not increase tree damage caused by deer in any region, as expected. Moreover, we observed that additional feeding mitigated forest damage in one region, where the highest level of deer impact had occurred. However, in this mountain region, the most important factor was elevation, which was used to classify additional feeding practice as efficient or inefficient. In the two other study regions, we did not observe any effect of supplementary feeding. Conclusions Additional winter supplementary feeding can reduce damage caused by deer in forest stands, but only in areas with high deer pressure. Moreover, feeders should be situated in locations > 600 m above sea level in our study area. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Fluctuations in weather conditions, particularly precipitation and water availability, may strongly affect growth rate patterns and lead to interannual height growth variation. Consequently, height growth models developed using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data collected at short time intervals may over- or underestimate long-term height growth trends and finally result in different growth forecasts. The objective of this study was to develop height growth models for Norway spruce, including the effect of weather conditions. We used ALS-derived top height (TH) estimates and meteorological data from the research area collected for 2007-2012 and 2013-2018 to develop a weather-sensitive height growth model. The top height (TH) growth of Norway spruce was affected by the mean annual precipitation sum (APS) in the studied periods, and a higher APS resulted in faster TH growth. This study demonstrates the high potential of repeated ALS for detecting short-term variation in the tree height increment and the development of weather-sensitive height growth models.

Forest site productivity, which is a quantitative estimate of the potential of a site to produce plant biomass, remains a fundamental variable in forestry. The most commonly used and widely accepted method of evaluating site productivity is the site index. Therefore, the construction of site index models describing top height (TH) growth with age remains a fundamental task for site productivity differentiation. Three main data sources have been used for site index model development to date: (1) repeated measurements on permanent sample plots (PSP); (2) temporary sample plot (TSP) data from periodic inventories; and (3) stem analysis (SA) data. Our study is practical application of change detection using airborne laser scanners for the development of top height growth models. We demonstrated how wall-to-wall airborne laser scanner (ALS) data obtained for large forest areas can be used in developing top height growth models for Norway spruce that appropriately reflect site-specific growth trajectories. Site specific growth trajectories were successfully captured by repeated height measurements using ALS data from notably short 5-year period, which indicates that such a period between subsequent ALS observations is sufficient and surmounts the noise and other uncertainties connected with ALS systems and interannual TH growth variations. Height increment obtained by change detection using repeated airborne laser scanning (ALS) may be recognized as a new, fully valuable data source for TH growth and site index modelling. Repeated ALS observations can be a substitute for height growth data used in site index modelling and collected to-date from SA, PSP or TSP. It could be expected that improving ALS technologies, decreasing costs of laser scanning acquisition and increasing data availability will result in improving the accuracy of forest height growth estimates. Therefore, in the near future, both utility and increased predictive validity will lead to substantial increases in the importance of change detection using airborne laser scanners in forest growth modelling using the data from repeated ALS measurements.

Two change detection techniques (NDVI differencing and post-classification analysis) were compared, in order to detect canopy cover changes in forests on the area of twelve forest districts in the Sudety and West Beskidy Mountains in Poland, using 2012 and 2013 Black-Bridge satellite images. Although the classification accuracy of the respective images was high (about 95%), the accuracy of the difference in bi-temporal images was much worse because of the short time between the dates of images and the imperfection of the algorithm calculating the unclear boundary between the forest and no-forest areas. NDVI differencing method and thresholding brought much better overall results, although roads, clouds and fogs caused much problem performing pseudo-changes.

The main goal of this research is to shed further light on the sensitivity of the vegetation indices to spatial changes of stand parameters. The analysis was done within mountain forests in the Sudetes and the Beskids in southern Poland. Some 1327 stands were analysed with more than 70 percent of spruce contribution in the species composition. The response of selected vegetation indices was verified in relation to the alterations of spruce participation, stand height, volume, stand density and diameter. The following indices were analysed: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Normalized Difference Red Edge Index, Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Wide Dynamic Range Vegetation Index. Indices were calculated based on the Rapid Eye (Black Bridge) images. All the analysed stand characteristics influence the values of vegetation indices. In general: mean height, diameter at breast height, volume and spruce participation are the most negatively correlated with the indices. Density is a variable that, in general, cannot directly be used for indices correction, because it is hard to find any stable trend. NDRE is the most stable index for the analysis of stand characteristics.

Late-spring frosts (LSFs) affect the performance of plants and animals across the world’s temperate and boreal zones, but despite their ecological and economic impact on agriculture and forestry, the geographic distribution and evolutionary impact of these frost events are poorly understood. Here, we analyze LSFs between 1959 and 2017 and the resistance strategies of Northern Hemisphere woody species to infer trees’ adaptations for minimizing frost damage to their leaves and to forecast forest vulnerability under the ongoing changes in frost frequencies. Trait values on leaf-out and leaf-freezing resistance come from up to 1,500 temperate and boreal woody species cultivated in common gardens. We find that areas in which LSFs are common, such as eastern North America, harbor tree species with cautious (late-leafing) leaf-out strategies. Areas in which LSFs used to be unlikely, such as broad-leaved forests and shrublands in Europe and Asia, instead harbor opportunistic tree species (quickly reacting to warming air temperatures). LSFs in the latter regions are currently increasing, and given species’ innate resistance strategies, we estimate that ∼35% of the European and ∼26% of the Asian temperate forest area, but only ∼10% of the North American, will experience increasing late-frost damage in the future. Our findings reveal region-specific changes in the spring-frost risk that can inform decision-making in land management, forestry, agriculture, and insurance policy.

In the 1980s, the Western Sudety Mountains were affected by a forest dieback process, resulting in large-scale deforestation covering an area of about 15,000 ha. A similar phenomenon is presently being observed in the Western Beskidy and Eastern Sudety Mountains, where the course of the process and the final effects are similar. The presented study analyzed the relationships between forest dieback processes today and in the past. Among others, the impact of the following factors was examined: exposure, slope, altitude, and topographic index, which was generated based on the airborne LIDAR (also airborne laser scanning abbreviated as ALS) data. The identification of forest dieback areas in the past was carried out based on the archived Landsat satellite imagery, as well as data obtained from the Polish State Forests. The identification of forest dieback areas at present was carried out based on the ALS data (single-tree detection approach) and color infrared aerial images. In the study, inter-dependencies between forest dieback today and in the past were compared. The performed analyses show significant differences between forests&rsquo, dieback specifics in all three areas. The process first occurred at 800&ndash, 900 m a.s.l., and afterwards at over 900 m. Mortality was especially intensive on the western and southwestern slopes. Below 700 m a.s.l., forests survived quite well. In the 1980s, significantly higher concentrations of hazardous chemical compounds were noted, which resulted in respectively greater deforestations on aspects open to the operation of prevailing winds (mainly west). Nowadays, a proportionately higher number of trees die on the southern aspects, which is particularly visible in the Western Sudety Mountains.

Spruce stands in the mountains of Central Europe are particularly valuable, not only because of their natural and scenic values but also because of their role in the protection of watersheds and soil. Over the past decades, these stands were frequently exposed to massive deforestation caused by various biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic factors. The current health condition of spruce stands in the Eastern Sudetes shows that the next phase of deterioration of these stands has begun. Bearing in mind past experiences and the current situation in these mountain areas, it is particularly important to understand the processes and factors that may short-term (2012&ndash, 2016) spruce health analyses based on the normalized difference red-edge index and RapidEye satellite imagery, which is being delivered annually. Aided by remote sensing data and Boosted Regression Trees, it was possible to determine the topographic and tree stand features having the greatest impact on the vitality of spruce in all analyzed areas during 2012&ndash, 2016. As the results show, the highest impact on the value of the normalized difference red-edge index indicator comes from a height above sea level, age of stands, terrain slopes, and exposure. In various areas, these factors may affect the vitality of spruce to varying degrees but not always in the same way. Our models accurately explained 74&ndash, 81% of the randomly selected input data (predicted 72&ndash, 80% of the excluded data) for site A, 50&ndash, 58% for site B (48&ndash, 57% for tested data) and 54&ndash, 70% for site C (52&ndash, 69% for excluded data).

W dniach 12–14 marca 2019 r. w Instytucie Badawczym Leśnictwa odbyła się XI Sesja Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej (ZSL), której tematem było „Zastosowanie geoinformatyki w leśnictwie”. Współorganizatorem Sesji była Dyrekcja Generalna Lasów Państwowych. Merytoryczne aspekty XI Sesji zostały przygotowane i opracowane przez Radę Programową Zimowej Szkoły Leśnej w składzie: prof. dr hab. Andrzej Grzywacz, prof. dr hab. Jacek Hilszczański, dr inż. Krzysztof Janeczko, prof. dr hab. Andrzej Klocek, mgr inż. Jacek Przypaśniak, mgr inż. Marek Roman, dr inż. Jacek Sagan, dr hab. Krzysztof Stereńczak, prof. IBL (przewodniczący), mgr inż. Adam Wasiak, prof. dr hab. Tomasz Zawiła-Niedźwiecki. Rada Programowa określiła nie tylko zakres problematyki XI Sesji, ale także propozycje tematyczne referatów zamawianych oraz wytypowania ich autorów. W trakcie XI Sesji referaty wygłosili zaproszeni goście zagraniczni reprezentujący Remote Sensing Research and Consulting Ltd. (Szwajcaria), Wyższą Szkołę Techniczną w Zurychu (Szwajcaria), Norweski Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy – NMBU, Federalny Instytut Badawczy Lasu, Śniegu i Krajobrazu (Szwajcaria), Uniwersytet we Fryburgu (Niemcy), Uniwersytet Florencki (Włochy), Instytut Geografii i Geoekologii i Instytut Technologii w Karlsruhe (Niemcy), Instytut Lasu im. Sukaczewa Syberyjskiej Filii Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk, Federalne Centrum Badawcze «Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS» i Syberyjski Uniwersytet Federalny (Rosja) oraz Uniwersytet w Cambridge (Wielka Brytania). Poza gośćmi z zagranicy na Zimowej Szkole Leśnej wystąpiło szerokie grono autorów z Polski, prezentujących wiele przykładów wykorzystania geoinformatyki w leśnictwie. W tym miejscu składam serdeczne podziękowanie autorom za przygotowanie i wygłoszenie interesujących referatów, a także za opracowanie tekstów wystąpień, które znajdą Państwo w niniejszych materiałach posesyjnych. W XI Sesji ZSL wzięło udział prawie 400 osób reprezentujących m.in.: kierownictwo Lasów Państwowych oraz jednostki organizacyjne PGL LP i Ministerstwo Środowiska. Najliczniejszą grupę słuchaczy Szkoły stanowili zarówno geomatycyreprezentujący szeroko rozumiany świat nauki, jak i firmy zajmujące się wdrożeniami i praktyką, pracownicy nadleśnictw oraz biur urządzania lasu i geodezji leśnej, na co dzień korzystających z narzędzi geoinformatycznych. Liczne grono stanowili przedstawiciele ośrodków naukowych, a także studentów polskich wydziałów leśnych.

Forest biomass is an essential indicator for monitoring the Earth’s ecosystems and climate. It is a critical input to greenhouse gas accounting, estimation of carbon losses and forest degradation, assessment of renewable energy potential, and for developing climate change mitigation policies such as REDD+, among others. Wall-to-wall mapping of aboveground biomass (AGB) is now possible with satellite remote sensing (RS). However, RS methods require extant, up-to-date, reliable, representative and comparable in situ data for calibration and validation. Here, we present the Forest Observation System (FOS) initiative, an international cooperation to establish and maintain a global in situ forest biomass database. AGB and canopy height estimates with their associated uncertainties are derived at a 0.25 ha scale from field measurements made in permanent research plots across the world’s forests. All plot estimates are geolocated and have a size that allows for direct comparison with many RS measurements. Początki państwowej administracji i gospodarki leśnej sięgają VIII-IX wieku. Wraz z występującą w tym czasie wielką wędrówką ludów nastąpił znaczny wyrąb lasu na potrzeby ówczesnego osadnictwa. Kolejna nadmierna eksploatacja lasów w Europie miała miejsce w XIII-XV wieku i była wynikiem intensywnego rozwoju miast, rzemiosła, transportu, w tym drewnochłonnej floty oraz górnictwa, hutnictwa żelaza i szkła. Rosnące z roku na rok zużycie drewna doprowadziło do jego nadmiernego pozyskania i ubytku zasobności drzewostanów. Odzwierciedleniem tej sytuacji było zjawisko „głodu drewna”. Kolejny okres intensywnego użytkowania tego surowca nazwany został „epoką drewna” i trwał od XV do XIX wieku. Pierwszą usystematyzowaną teorią zajmującą się ekonomicznymi problemami gospodarki leśnej była kameralistyka (niem. Kammer − m.in. izba skarbowa), której początki rozwoju sięgają przełomu XVII i XVIII wieku. Jej nazwa pochodzi od byłych kamer rządowych. Kameralistów traktowano jako niemieckich przedstawicieli merkantylizmu i zaliczano do przedstawicieli liberalizmu gospodarczego. Wzrost zainteresowania leśnictwem ze strony kameralistów doprowadził do szybkiego rozwoju przemysłu leśnego. Za prekursora tych działań uważany jest W.G. Moser, autor dzieła „Zasady ekonomiki leśnictwa” (1757), według którego głównym celem leśnictwa jest zaspokojenie zapotrzebowania przemysłu na drewno1. Z obawy o brak dostatecznych dostaw drewna Moser formułuje „zasadę ciągłości użytkowania”, która w późniejszym okresie została określona jako „zasada ciągłości produkcji leśnej” i stała się kamieniem węgielnym rozwoju gospodarstwa leśnego. Na przełomie XVIII i XIX wieku gospodarkę leśną zaczyna kształtować liberalna ekonomia A. Smitha, wraz z jej wolnym rynkiem. Podstawowe jej zasady, w tym dotyczące zwłaszcza równowagi ekonomicznej gospodarstwa leśnego, znalazły swoje miejsce pod skrzydłami statyki leśnej. Jej wybitny przedstawiciel, G. Heyer (1865), określił ją natomiast jako rachunek oceny rentowności metod gospodarowania w leśnictwie2. To właśnie pod wpływem statyki żądano od leśnictwa dostarczenia „możliwie dużego dochodu pieniężnego” (zysku, renty), a nie największej masy drewna. Rozległość zainteresowania statyki leśnej doprowadziła do sformułowania dwóch podstawowych teorii ekonomiki leśnictwa określanych jako: ■ teoria renty gruntowej oraz ■ teoria renty leśnej. Pierwsza z wymienionych teorii główną uwagę koncentrowała na gruntach leśnych, które traktowała jako kapitał trwały gospodarstwa leśnego. Natomiast drzewostan był uznawany za kapitał (środek) obrotowy. Pojęcie gospodarności sprowadzało się do uzyskania maksymalnej rentowności mierzonej stosunkiem czystego (netto) dochodu (renty) do wartości kapitału trwałego gruntu leśnego. W obliczeniach tych statyka leśna korzystała w szerokim zakresie i nadal korzysta z rachunków procentu składanego. Wymieniona teoria renty leśnej nazywana również szkołą renty leśnej lub nauką o czystym dochodzie z lasu, dążyła do maksymalizacji czystego dochodu z lasu obejmującego przede wszystkim grunt i drzewostan. Wiek, w którym ten postulat był spełniony, określono wiekiem najwyższej renty leśnej lub wiekiem rębności. Teoretycznie wiek ten jest znacznie wyższy niż wiek rębności najwyższej renty gruntowej. Dla gorszych siedlisk różnice te wynosiły 40-60 i więcej lat, dla najlepszych zaś siedlisk około 30-40 lat. Wiek najwyższej rentowności był na ogół wyższy od wieku dojrzałości finansowej, a niższy od wieku najwyższej renty leśnej. W Europie Środkowej wiek rębności waha się od 60 do 250 lat (Möhring 2004)3. Długi okres produkcji leśnej na ogół dominuje w ekstensywnych metodach produkcji. Natomiast aktywne metody zagospodarowania lasu i jego pielęgnacji obejmują rocznie zaledwie od 10 do 20% ogółu powierzchni gospodarstwa leśnego. Oznacza to, że przeciętny cykl zabiegów hodowlano-ochronnych powtarzany jest co 5−10 lat. Przedstawiona krótka charakterystyka teorii statyki leśnej wskazuje na wysoki stopień jej operacjonizmu wynikający z empirycznych (fizycznych) metod pomiaru elementów rachunku renty gruntowej i renty leśnej. Pod tym względem rachunek rent wyraźnie różni się od pozostałych rachunków ekonomicznych gospodarki leśnej. Od XIX wieku, zwłaszcza od ukształtowania przez M. Faustmanna finansowego nurtu gospodarki leśnej, jej cele zostały zdominowane przez teorię czystego dochodu z gruntu, nazywanego również teorią renty gruntowej. Upowszechniła się ona po długim, przeszło 100-letnim sporze między nauką o czystym dochodzie z gruntu a nauką o czystym dochodzie z lasu. Obok teorii renty gruntowej i renty leśnej w XIX w. w leśnictwie zachodniej i środkowej części Europy ukształtowały się dwa nurty, które odbiegają pod względem celów i metod od teorii renty gruntowej i leśnej. Nurty te są bliżej określone w poniższych tytułach: ■ nurt ekologiczno-środowiskowy oraz ■ nurt ekonomiczno-finansowy. W Europie Środkowej i Zachodniej dominuje nurt ekologiczno-środowiskowy. Jego cechą są drzewostany wielogatunkowe o długim cyklu produkcji leśnej, słabych trzebieżach, niskim oprocentowaniu i małych odsetkach oraz o znacznym podporządkowaniu gospodarki leśnej czystemu dochodowi z lasu. Kolejną cechą nurtu ekologicznego jest duży przyrost miąższości, ale także znaczny udział drzewostanów starszych klas wieku w strukturach lasu oraz ich odporność na działanie biotycznych i abiotycznych zakłóceń, dywersyfikacja dochodów i ukierunkowanie celu gospodarki leśnej na maksymalizację czystego dochodu z lasu. Przeciwieństwem powyższego nurtu jest ekonomiczno-finansowa orientacja gospodarki leśnej ukierunkowana na krótkie wieki rębności, intensywne trzebieże, drzewostany jednogatunkowe, duże oprocentowanie i najwyższy czysty dochód z gruntu. Jednym słowem gospodarstwo o orientacji finansowo-ekonomicznej dąży do krótkich wieków rębności, zrębowego użytkowania oraz wysokich procentów. Tymczasem nurt ekologiczny preferuje długie wieki rębności i niskie oprocentowanie. Podsumowując należy zauważyć, że ukształtowane w przeszłości dwa nurty gospodarki leśnej dominują nadal w leśnictwie europejskim z różnym nasileniem poszczególnych metod. Ekonomiczne podejście do podejmowania decyzji inwestycyjnych w leśnych warunkach niepewności ryzyka zostało wsparte przez rozwijaną od roku 1950 teorię portfela, najpierw w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki, później w innych krajach, w tym zwłaszcza w Skandynawii i Niemczech. Z jednej strony preferowane są więc drzewostany o dużej odporności na ryzyko, ale mniejszej produkcyjności, z drugiej zaś drzewostany o znacznej produkcyjności, ale małej odporności na ryzyko. Optymalna kombinacja drzewostanów reprezentujących te dwie cechy w jednym z przykładowych leśnictw w Niemczech miała następujący skład gatunkowy: 70% Św, 30% Bk (Knoke 2004)4. Natomiast w Szwecji optymalna struktura gatunkowa drzewostanów wynosi: 49% Św oraz 51% So (Svensson 2000)5. Do szczególnie ważnych i szeroko stosowanych obecnie rozwiązań należy dywersyfikacja, która polega na zmniejszeniu sumarycznego ryzyka przy jednakowym dochodzie lub zwiększeniu dochodu przy jednakowym ryzyku. Wynika stąd, że teoria portfela obejmuje kombinację dwóch dóbr, na przykład drzewosfery jodłowe i bukowe. Metodyczne aspekty omawianej teorii portfela są dziełem H. Markowitza (1952), który został za nie uhonorowany nagrodą Nobla w 1990 r.6 Natomiast pionierskiezastosowania teorii portfela w praktyce leśnictwa USA są wynikiem intensywnych prac W.L. Millsa i W.L. Hoovera (1982) nad rozwojem inwestycji leśnych7. Odnotowany w kolejnych dekadach dalszy rozwój teorii portfela dotyczy przede wszystkim leśnictwa Skandynawii oraz Niemiec. Zgodnie z teorią portfela jego istota polega na optymalnej kombinacji dwóch dóbr, na przykład dwóch gatunków w drzewostanie (Kruschwitz 2007)8. Powszechnym przykładem takiej kombinacji jest Las Tharandzki oraz sporządzone dla niego optymalne kombinacje struktury gatunkowej drzewostanów. Taki sam atrybut odnosi się również do innych kategorii dóbr. Dziewiąta edycja wspólnego przedsięwzięcia Instytutu Badawczego Leśnictwa i Dyrekcji Generalnej Lasów Państwowych, jakim jest Zimowa Szkoła Leśna, dotyczyła właśnie wyzwań stojących przed współczesnym leśnictwem, zarówno tych wynikających ze zmian globalnych środowiska, jak i ekonomiczno-społecznych aspektów leśnictwa. W IX Sesji uczestniczyło 259 osób. Poza autorami krajowymi, reprezentującymi Ministerstwo Środowiska, Dyrekcję Generalną Lasów Państwowych oraz jednostki organizacyjne Lasów Państwowych, uczelnie i instytuty naukowe, referaty wygłosili naukowcy i leśnicy praktycy z zagranicy. ----------------------------------------- 1 Moser W.G. 1757. The increase in the deer population observed in recent decades has strongly impacted forest regeneration and the forest itself. The reduction in the quality of raw wood material, as a consequence of deer-mediated damage, constitutes a significant burden on forest owners. The basis for the commencement of preventive actions in this setting is the understanding of the populations and behaviors of deer in their natural environment. Although multiple studies have been carried out regarding this subject, only a few suggested topography as an important factor that may influence the distribution and intensity of deer-mediated damage. The detailed terrain models based on LiDAR data as well as the data on damage caused by deer from the State Forests database enabled thorough analyses of the distribution and intensity of damage in relation to land form in this study. These analyses were performed on three mountain regions in Poland: the Western Sudety Mountains, the Eastern Sudety Mountains, and the Beskidy Mountains. Even though these three regions are located several dozen to several hundred kilometers apart from each other, not all evaluated factors appeared common among them, and therefore, these regions have been analyzed separately. The obtained results indicated that the forest damage caused by deer increased with increasing altitude above 1000 m ASL. However, much larger areas of damage by deer were observed at elevations ranging from 401 to 1000 m ASL than at elevations below 400 m ASL. Moreover, the locations of damage (forest thickets and old stands) indicated that red deer is the species that exerts the strongest pressure on forest ecosystems. Our results show the importance of deer foraging behavior to the structure of the environment.

The biodiversity-productivity relationship (BPR) is foundational to our understanding of the global extinction crisis and its impacts on ecosystem functioning. Understanding BPR is critical for the accurate valuation and effective conservation of biodiversity. Using ground-sourced data from 777,126 permanent plots, spanning 44 countries and most terrestrial biomes, we reveal a globally consistent positive concave-down BPR, showing that continued biodiversity loss would result in an accelerating decline in forest productivity worldwide. The value of biodiversity in maintaining commercial forest productivity alone - US$166 billion to 490 billion per year according to our estimation - is more than twice what it would cost to implement effective global conservation. This highlights the need for a worldwide reassessment of biodiversity values, forest management strategies, and conservation priorities.
