With the advent of high-power laser facilities in the second half of the XXth century camethe ability to study matter at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. This advancementenabled research into thermonuclear fusion and laboratory astrophysics, two fields which oftenemploy elements with low atomic numbers. These elements have weak x-ray absorption, resultingin poor contrast in traditional x-ray radiography. Thus, new and more refined methods arerequired to achieve high-contrast and high-resolution images.This manuscript reports on the study of propagative and interferometric x-ray phase imagingmethods for laser-generated plasmas at XFEL and other laser facilities. First, the neededfundamental plasma and imaging physics are presented to develop x-ray phase contrast imagingin a high-energy-density environment. This is followed by an overview of the facilities andprimary diagnostics used in these studies. Next, experimental results are shown using propagativeimaging methods at laser and XFEL facilities. The manuscript finishes by examining the currentdevelopments in differential x-ray phase contrast imaging of laser-generated plasmas using aTalbot-Lau x-ray interferometer, including its first demonstration at XFEL facilities.; L’avènement des lasers de forte puissance dans la seconde moitié du XXème sièclea donné la possibilité d’étudier en laboratoire la matière dans des conditions de pression et detempérature extrêmes. Les applications de fusion thermonucléaire, et d’astrophysique de laboratoiresont ainsi vite évoquées. Les matériaux généralement employés dans ces expériences sontde numéro atomiques faible (Deuterium-Tritium, mousses, etc..). Ils sont donc particulièrementpeu absorbants. Le faible contraste qu’ils procurent à la radiographie impose de développer denouvelles méthodes de radiographie plus fines.Ainsi, dans ce manuscrit nous étudions les possibilités de réalisation expérimentale de la radiographiede phase X en propagation et par interférométrie pour les plasmas générés par laser.Dans un premier temps, sont abordées les notions de base en physique des plasmas et d’imagerie.Ensuite sont présentées les installations et les diagnostics utilisés lors des expériences. Enfin, nousmontrons les résultats expérimentaux de radiographie classique et de phase sur installations laseret sur XFEL. Nous terminons le manuscrit sur les études en cours sur l’interférométrie Talbot-Laupour l’imagerie X par différence de phase de plasmas denses. Nous présentons d’ailleurs la premièredémonstration d’interférométrie Talbot sur XFEL afin d’imager des plasmas denses dans uncontexte de haute densité d’énergie.

Le texte résume les travaux de restauration d’une sculpture romaine en bronze représentant Hercule, effectués au Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France, ainsi que le travail d’étude mené en amont et en parallèle, tant sur le plan des examens que des analyses. Il s’attache particulièrement à présenter les acquis des différentes techniques utilisées et leur importance pour la détermination des choix de traitements à mettre en œuvre. En effet, cette œuvre récemment découverte n’avait fait l’objet d’aucune restauration. Il a donc été possible de mener une étude complète, et d’orienter les traitements en fonction des résultats. The article summarises the restoration operations conducted at the C2RMF on a Roman bronze sculpture of Hercules, and the different investigations conducted before and during the restoration work, including observations and analyses. It emphasizes in particular the achievements of the various investigative techniques and their importance for determining the choice of technique to employ. The sculpture was recently discovered and had never been submitted to any restoration. It has been thus possible to execute a complete study and to direct the treatments geared towards the results.

The objective of this research was to create a comparative database comprising findings from the London and Paris Battle’s with those that are currently being obtained from the research on the Uffizi painting. With experts from the Scientific Departments of the two Museums we made a comparative study of the silver-leaf usage and decoration techniques, and study the nature of the decorative organic layers present on the surface of metal leaf, from the perspective of technical art history and as a possible tool for cleaning options of the Uffizi panel. Cette recherche avait pour objectif d’élaborer une base de données comparatives sur les panneaux de La Bataille de San Romano conservés au Louvre, à la National Gallery et à la galerie des Offices, où l’œuvre est en cours d’examen. Avec des spécialistes des laboratoires du Louvre et de la National Gallery, nous avons effectué une étude comparée de l’utilisation de la feuille d’argent et des techniques de décoration. Nous avons analysé la nature des couches organiques présentes à la surface de la feuille métallique, à la fois du point de vue de l’histoire technique de l’art et afin de guider éventuellement le choix des procédés de nettoyage pour le panneau des Offices.

International audience; Measurements of soil bulk density profiles combined with thin-section analysis have been suggested to assess the structural seedbed degradation caused by rainfall. The effects of water table elevation and rainfall duration on surface sealing and seedbed slumping were studied on a repacked silt loam soil. Two initial water table elevations (0.3 and 0.7 m below the soil surface) and three simulated rainfall durations (15, 30, and 40 min at 30.5 mm h-1 followed by 180 min at 7 mm h-1) were used. Seedbed bulk density profiles were generated using x-radiography of resin-impregnated soil slices. Macroporosity measurements using image analysis and thin-section observations showed that infilling of eroded particles in interaggregate voids and compaction of the infilled particles were the main sealing processes. Below the seal, the seedbed exhibited coalescence and welding of aggregates into larger units, which affected mainly macroporosity. A model of sealing, exponential decrease in bulk density with depth, and slumping, linear increase in bulk density with depth, adequately reproduced the measured bulk density profiles (regression RMSE range 0.057-0.106 Mg m-3). The change in surface bulk density increased with rainfall duration, whereas this factor did not significantly affect slumping. The highest initial water table elevation led to the highest soil surface and internal seedbed bulk densities. It was suggested that high values of soil water content led to a decrease in aggregate cohesion. Moreover, the number of wetting and drying cycles and the water content during these cycles were shown to increase the magnitude of slumping.

X-ray imaging coupled with recently emerged energy-resolved photon counting detectors provides the ability to differentiate material components and to estimate their respective thicknesses. However, such techniques require highly accurate images. The presence of scattered radiation leads to a loss of spatial contrast and, more importantly, a bias in radiographic material imaging and computed tomography (CT). Additionally, artifacts are also introduced in the case of the latter. The main aim of the present thesis was to develop a scatter correction approach adapted for multi-energy imaging. In order to achieve this task, a secondary objective was also set. Namely, the conception and validation of a simulation tool capable of providing energy-resolved scatter simulations in a reasonable time. Once validated through simulations and experimentally, this tool gave the ability to study the behavior of scattered radiation both in spatial and energy domains. Based on the conducted scatter analysis, a Partial Attenuation Spectral Scatter Separation Approach (PASSSA) adapted for multi-energy imaging was developed. The evaluation of PASSSA in radiographic mode through simulations and experiments revealed noteworthy results both in terms of image contrast improvement and scatter induced bias reduction. Additionally, simulation studies examined the performance of the developed approach in CT, where PASSSA also proved to be quite effective at correcting scatter induced distortions. Moreover, the performance improvement in the context of basis material decomposition in radiography after applying the designed method was also analyzed. It was concluded that the application of PASSSA results in a substantial improvement in basis material thickness estimation. Finally, based on the obtained simulated and experimental method evaluation results an analysis of perspective developments was also conducted., L’imagerie à rayons X couplée aux détecteurs résolus en énergie permet de différencier les matériaux présents et d’estimer leurs contributions respectives. Cependant, ces techniques nécessitent des images très précises. La présence du rayonnement diffusé conduit à une perte du contraste spatial et un biais dans l’imagerie radiographique ainsi que des artefacts dans la tomodensitométrie (TDM). L’objectif principal de cette thèse était de développer une approche de correction du rayonnement diffusé adaptée à l’imagerie multi-énergies. Pour réaliser cette tâche, un objectif secondaire a été défini : la conception et la validation d’un outil de simulation capable de fournir des images du diffusé résolu en énergie dans un temps raisonnable. Une fois validé, cet outil a permis d’étudier le comportement du diffusé dans le domaine spatial et énergétique. Sur la base de cette analyse du diffusé, une approche originale dite « Partial Attenuation Spectral Scatter Separation Approach » (PASSSA) adaptée à l’imagerie multi-énergies a été développée. L’évaluation de PASSSA en mode radiographique par des simulations numériques et des mesures expérimentales a révélé des résultats remarquables en termes d’amélioration du contraste d’image et de la réduction du biais induit par la présence du diffusé. De plus, des études de simulation ont permis d’évaluer la performance de l’approche développée dans la TDM, où PASSSA s’est révélée d’être très efficace pour corriger les distorsions in-duites par le rayonnement diffusé. D’autre part, l’amélioration de la performance dans le contexte de la décomposition des matériaux de base en radiographie après avoir appliqué la méthode développée a également été analysée : l’application de PASSSA se traduit par une amélioration substantielle de l’estimation des épaisseurs des matériaux de base. Finalement, sur la base des différents résultats de validation obtenus, une analyse des développements potentiels a été menée.

Exponential and sigmoidal functions have been suggested to describe the bulk density profiles of crusts. The present work aims to evaluate these conceptual models using high resolution X-radiography. Repacked seedbeds from two soil materials, air-dried or prewetted by capillary rise, were subjected to simulated rain, which resulted in three types of structural crusts, namely, slaking, infilling, and coalescing. Bulk density distributions with depth were generated using high-resolution (70 mum), calibrated X-ray images of slices from the resin-impregnated crusted seedbeds. The bulk density decreased progressively with depth, which supports the suggestion that a crust should be considered as a nonuniform layer. For the slaking and the coalescing crusts, the exponential function underestimated the strong change in bulk density across the morphologically defined transition between the crust and the underlying material; the sigmoidal function provided a better description. Neither of these crust models effectively described the shape of the bulk density profiles through the whole seedbed. Below the infilling and slaking crusts, bulk density increased linearly with depth as a result of slumping. In the coalescing crusted seedbed, the whole seedbed uniformly collapsed and most of the bulk density change within the crust could be ascribed to slumping (0.33 g cm(-3)) rather than to crusting (0.12 g cm(-3)). Finally, (i) X-radiography appears as a unique tool to generate high resolution bulk density profiles and (ii) in structural crusts, bulk density profiles could be modeled using the existing exponential and sigmoidal crusting models, provided a slumping model would be coupled.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a significant loss of bone mass and alterations in the microarchitecture of bone tissue. Actually, in clinical routine the diagnosis of osteoporosis is based mainly on measurement of bone mineral density. It turned out that this is not sufficient, it must be accompanied by an analysis of the microarchitecture of the bone to increase the efficiency of diagnosis. This thesis deals with the characterization of images of bone radiographs for the early diagnosis of osteoporosis. To do this, in order to better characterize the texture of bone radiography, we have introduced a new technique for data preprocessing to reduce redundancy and decrease the effect of the noise resulted by the acquisition sensors. For characterization, we propose a new analysis method inspired from the local binary patterns (LBP). The new descriptor called 1DLBP (One Dimensional Local Binary Patterns) applies in one-dimensionally manner. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted two clinical studies where the new descriptor (1DLBP) is compared with the conventional method (LBP) to classify osteoporotic patients and healthy subjects. The classification scores obtained were enhanced by 72% with the conventional LBP descriptor to 91% with 1DLBP descriptor., L’ostéoporose est une maladie osseuse caractérisée par une perte importante de la masse osseuse et des altérations de la microarchitecture du tissu osseux. Aujourd’hui, en routine clinique, le diagnostic de l’ostéoporose est basé principalement sur une mesure de la densité minérale osseuse qui n’est pas suffisante, car elle doit être accompagnée par une analyse de la qualité de la microarchitecture osseuse. Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse concernent la caractérisation des images de radiographies osseuses pour le diagnostic précoce de l’ostéoporose. Pour ce faire, afin de mieux caractériser la texture osseuse sur radiographie, nous avons introduit une nouvelle technique de prétraitement des données pour réduire les redondances et éliminer le bruit issu des capteurs d’acquisition. Pour la caractérisation, nous avons proposé une nouvelle technique d’analyse inspirée des motifs binaires locaux (Local Binary Patterns, LBP). Le nouveau descripteur, appelé 1DLBP (One Dimensional Local Binary Patterns) s’applique de manière unidimensionnelle. Pour tester l’efficacité de notre approche, nous avons réalisé deux études cliniques où le nouveau descripteur LBP1D est comparé à la méthode classique, LBP afin de classifier des patients ostéoporotiques et des sujets sains. Les pourcentages de classification obtenus ont été améliorés de 72% avec la méthode classique LBP à 91% avec le nouveau descripteur 1DLBP.

The development of X-ray photon counting detectors based on semiconductors has grown up over the last ten years, and applications in medicine, in security and in nondestructive testing are under study. These detectors make it possible to perform measurements at multiple energies in a single acquisition, with an excellent energetic separation. Since the years 2008-2009, it seems that a real race started for the development of detectors performing multi-energetic measurements on an increasing number of energy bands. However, today, within the works already done, the interest of performing measurements on a large number of energies has not been demonstrated for material identification. As part of a study in homeland security, we assessed the interest of using Xray counting detectors that perform measurements on multiple energy bands. The considered field of interest is material identification in the luggage of travelers. We first developed an original method for identifying single materials. This method is applicable to any type of multi-energy detector. In a first time, we studied in simulation the evolution of the performance for identifying materials with the increasing number of energy bands. An optimization process was carried out to determine, for certain configurations, an optimal geometry of the energy bands.In a second step, the consequences of taking into account the detector response function were quantified by simulating different sensors effects (charge sharing, energy resolution). An experimental validation has been performed by using a counting spectrometric detector. From the measurements experimentally obtained with such a detector, combining the data allowed us to evaluate the identification performance that would have detectors possessing a different number of energy bands. Finally, we conducted a preliminary study on the transposition of the identification method initially developed for radiography to the multi-energy computed tomography. This imaging modality allows to identify superimposed materials., Le développement des détecteurs de rayons X en comptage à base de semiconducteurs est en plein essor depuis une dizaine d’années, et des applications aussi bien dans le domaine médical que dans le domaine du contrôle non destructif sont envisagées. Une sculpture représentant une pomme réalisée par collage de l’artiste tchèque Jiří Kolář et datant de 1972, a été soumise à un traitement de conservation-restauration. La sculpture présentait des dommages structurels causés par des facteurs externes ainsi que des surfaces encrassées. Les interrogations déontologiques soulevées lors de la restauration d’une œuvre d’art contemporain ont représenté un aspect important de l’étude. Par conséquent, la majeure partie des recherches a été dévolue à la compréhension du matériau et de la structure, celle des intentions de l’artiste,tout comme du concept et de la signification de l’œuvre. Ce travail a été étayé par une recherche scientifique ayant pour but d’évaluer l’efficacité du Triammonium citrate comme agent de nettoyage à base aqueuse, ainsi que par une analyse de la construction en trois dimensions de l’œuvre d’art.A collaged sculpture of an apple by the Czech artist Jiří Kolář, dated 1972 was presented for conservation. The sculpture suffered from structural damage caused by external factors and ingrained surface dirt. The ethical implications raised in conserving a contemporary artwork were an important aspect and subsequently an understanding of the materials and structure, the artist’s intentions, concept and meaning of the artwork formed a large part of the research. Combined with this was scientific research into the effectiveness of Tri-ammonium Citrate as an aqueous surface cleaning agent and analysing construction of 3-Dimensional artworks.
