We examine patterns of variation of 32 primarily main sequence stars, extending our previous 7-12 year time series to 13-20 years by combining b, y data from Lowell Observatory with similar data from Fairborn Observatory. Parallel chromospheric Ca II H and K emission data from the Mount Wilson Observatory span the entire interval. The extended data strengthen the relationship between chromospheric and photometric variation derived previously. Twenty-seven stars are deemed variable. On a year-to-year timescale young active stars become fainter when their Ca II emission increases while older less active stars such as the Sun become brighter when their Ca II emission increases. The Sun's total irradiance variation, scaled to the b and y filter photometry, still appears to be somewhat smaller than stars in our limited sample with similar mean chromospheric activity, but we now regard this discrepancy as probably due mainly to our limited stellar sample

The flux-flux relationships of cool stars are studied on the basis of nearly simultaneous measurements of Ca II H+K, Mg II h+k, and soft X-ray fluxes. A linear relationship is derived between IUE Mg II h+k fluxes and Mount Wilson Ca II H+K fluxes which were obtained within 36 hr of each other for a sample of 26 F5-K3 main-sequence stars. Nearly simultaneous EXOSAT soft X-ray fluxes are compared with Ca II H+K fluxes for a sample of 20 dwarfs and gaints with spectral types ranging from F6 to K2, and 72 additional cool stars for which noncontemporaneous Ca II H+K and EINSTEIN soft X-ray fluxes are available are compared. It is confirmed that a nonradiatively heated chromosphere exists on even the least active main-sequence stars. This basal chromosphere is probably independent of stellar magnetic activity.

A photometric survey of main-sequence stars in the Pleiades, Hyades, and Malmquist Field, to investigate variability among solar-type stars, had been continued at Cloudcroft Observatory for a second season. Possibly six of 40 Pleiades stars, two (possibly six) of 49 Hyades stars and possibly four of 42 stars in the Malmquist Field are found to be variable. Parallel observations of Hyades stars were obtained also at Lowell Observatory. These measurements, which achieved better precision, reveal significiant variations in eleven (possibly 16) of 36 Hyades stars, all of spectral type F7 V-K2 V. Agreement between the two surveys is acceptable. The two seasons of the Cloudcroft survey show that changes in the mean annual brightness of the Hyades stars accompany changes in the amplitude of their short-term variability, in the sense that a star tends to become fainter as its variability increases and vice versa. Color effects are absent.

Since its discovery as an eclipsing binary with a white dwarf companion by Nelson and Young (1970), V471 Tau (BD + 16 deg 516) has been an object of considerable importance. The K dwarf companion has been the subject of intensive studies because it demonstrates many of the properties normally attributed to classical RS CVn stars. In the present investigation, it is demonstrated that the K dwarf companion exhibits also flaring properties which characterize the BY Dra stars. In a sense, V471 Tau may be the critical link by providing information that the distinctions between RS CVn phenomena and BY Dra phenomena are artificial and misleading, arising entirely from historical processes. Observations in the optical and the X-ray wavelength regions are reported. A study of the occurrence times of flare events in terms of the ephemeris of the photometric wave which is known to migrate through the light curve of V471 Tau reveals a strong correlation, suggesting that the flares occur near regions of the K dwarf where spot groups are inferred.

The importance of timings and high resolution astrometry in occultation observations is discussed as well as the occultation process itself. The design and operation of the telescope, photodetector, and data acquisition systems are described. Methods are presented for data analysis and model fitting. Observations of beta Capricorni and Uranus occultations are examined. General conclusions concerning occultation observations are explored and future activities at Prairie Observatory are discussed.
