By analyzing experimental data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized targets, we extract the transverse momentum dependence of the quark helicity distribution, i.e., the difference between the three-dimensional motion of quarks with polarization parallel or antiparallel to the longitudinal polarization of the parent hadron. We perform the analysis at next-to-leading (NLL) and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLL) perturbative accuracy. The quality of the fit is very good for both cases, reaching a $\chi^2$ per number of data points equal to $1.11$ and $1.09$, respectively. Although the limited number of data points leads to significant uncertainties, the data are consistent with an interpretation in which the helicity distribution is narrower in transverse momentum than the unpolarized distribution.

We present studies aimed at probing the 3D gluon content of the proton through spin-dependent TMD gluon densities, computed by means of the spectator-model approach. Our formalism incorporates a fit-based modulation function for the spectator mass, designed to capture longitudinal-momentum effects across a broad kinematic range. Special emphasis is placed on the time-reversal even Boer-Mulders and the time-reversal odd Sivers functions. We consider a class of nonlocal conservation laws with an interaction kernel supported on the negative real half-line and featuring a decreasing jump at the origin. We provide, for the first time, an existence and uniqueness theory for said model with initial data in the space of probability measures. Our concept of solution allows to sort a lack of uniqueness problem which we exhibit in a specific example. Our approach uses the so-called \emph{quantile}, or \emph{pseudo-inverse} formulation of the PDE, which has been largely used for similar types of nonlocal transport equations in one-space dimension. Partly related to said approach, we then provide a deterministic particle approximation theorem for the equation under consideration, which works for general initial data in the space of probability measures with compact support. As a crucial step in both results, we use that our concept of solution (which we call \emph{dissipative measure solution}) implies an instantaneous \emph{measure-to-$L^\infty$} smoothing effect, a property which is known to be featured as well by local conservation laws with genuinely nonlinear fluxes.

We present an extraction of the unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions that takes into account possible differences between quark flavors and final-state hadrons. The extraction is based on experimental measurements from Drell-Yan processes and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, whose combination is essential to distinguish flavor differences. The analysis is carried out at N$^3$LL accuracy. The extracted flavor-dependent distributions give a very good description of the data ($\chi^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.08$). We propose and analyse a new microscopic second order Follow-the-Leader type scheme to describe traffic flows. The main novelty of this model consists in multiplying the second order term by a nonlinear function of the global density, with the intent of considering the attentiveness of the drivers in dependence of the amount of congestion. Such term makes the system highly degenerate; indeed, coherently with the modellistic viewpoint, we allow for the nonlinearity to vanish as soon as consecutive vehicles are very close to each other. We first show existence of solutions to the degenerate discrete system. We then perform a rigorous discrete-to-continuum limit, as the number of vehicles grows larger and larger, by making use of suitable piece-wise constant approximations of the relevant macroscopic variables. The resulting continuum system turns out to be described by a degenerate pressure-less Euler-type equation, and we discuss how this could be considered an alternative to the groundbreaking Aw-Rascle-Zhang traffic model. Finally, we study the singular limit to first order dynamics in the spirit of a vanishing-inertia argument. This eventually validates the use of first order macroscopic models with nonlinear mobility to describe a congested traffic stream.

We present a model calculation of T-odd transverse-momentum-dependent distributions of gluons in the nucleon. The model is based on the assumption that a nucleon can emit a gluon, and what remains after the emission is treated as a single spectator particle. This spectator particle is considered to be on-shell, but its mass is allowed to take a continuous range of values, described by a spectral function. Increasing cultivated lands, crop homogenization and global food trade have fostered the spread of crop pests and diseases. Optimizing crop protection is urgently needed to ensure food safety. One aspect of crop protection is surveillance, which focuses on the early detection of a parasite, and control, aiming to fight and possibly eradicate it. Network theory has been widely used to model the spread of human and animal infectious diseases in systems described through nodes and edges. It has been successfully used to optimize monitoring and immunization campaigns. In crop protection, there is a growing literature using this theory to describe parasites spread and to conceive protection strategies. Here we review the use of network theory in crop protection, from the more descriptive to the more applied approaches aimed to optimize crop protection. We retrace the logical process that has led epidemiological models to rely on network theory, and we provide examples of how the spread of crop parasites has been represented via a network description. We define the objectives of surveillance and control, and we show how these have been declined in the network-based epidemiological sphere and then adapted in the agricultural context. We eventually discuss the discrepancy between the application of network theory in surveillance and control to identify culprits and solutions. We find that: i) scientists have successfully interpreted very different modes of parasitic transmission under the lens of network theory; ii) while network-based surveillance has progressively clarified its objectives and sound tools have been proposed, network-based control has been less studied and applied; iii) network-thinking must address how to properly define edges and nodes at different geographic scale to broad its application in crop protection., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

We investigated existence of global weak solutions for a system of chemotaxis type with nonlinear degenerate diffusion, arising in modelling Multiple Sclerosis disease. The model consists of three equations describing the evolution of macrophages ($m$), cytokine ($c$) and apoptotic oligodendrocytes ($d$). The main novelty in our work is the presence of a nonlinear diffusivity $D(m)$, which results to be more appropriate from the modelling point of view. Under suitable assumptions and for sufficiently regular initial data, adapting the strategy in [30,44], we show the existence of global bounded solutions for the model analysed.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. We include strong parity-violating contributions to inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of longitudinally polarized leptons off an unpolarized target. At variance with standard results, we obtain nonvanishing parity-violating structure functions in the case of pure photon exchange. The addition of these strong parity-violating contributions improves the description of existing experimental data on DIS parity-violating asymmetries. We find the size of these contributions small but exhibiting a deviation from zero of about 1.5 $\sigma$. The associated $p$-value is 0.063, indicating that the probability of making an error by rejecting the hypothesis of no parity-violating contributions is 6.3\%, which is small but not negligible. We outline the physics opportunities provided by the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). These include the study of the parton structure of the nucleon and nuclei, the onset of gluon saturation, the production of jets and heavy flavor, hadron spectroscopy and tests of fundamental symmetries. We review the present status and future challenges in EIC theory that have to be addressed in order to realize this ambitious and impactful physics program, including how to engage a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to address these many-fold challenges, we propose a coordinated effort involving theory groups with differing expertise is needed. We describe the formal analogies in the description of the inclusive production in hard processes of hadron pairs (based on dihadron fragmentation functions) and of a single hadron inside a jet (based on hadron-in-jet fragmentation functions). We present a classification of area-strict limits of planar $BV$ homeomorphisms. This class of mappings allows for cavitations and fractures but fulfil a suitable generalization of the INV condition. As pointed out by J. Ball [4], these features are expected in limit configurations of elastic deformations. In [12], De Philippis and Pratelli introduced the \emph{no-crossing} condition which characterizes the $W^{1,p}$ closure of planar homeomorphisms. In the current paper we show that a suitable version of this concept is equivalent with a map, $f$, being the area-strict limit of BV homeomorphisms. This extends our results from [10], where we proved that the \emph{no-crossing BV} condition for a BV map was equivalent with the map being the m-strict limit of homeomorphisms (i.e. $f_k$ converges $w^*$ to $f$ and $|D_1f_k|(\Omega)+|D_2f_k|(\Omega) \to |D_1f|(\Omega)+|D_2f|(\Omega)$). Further we show that the \emph{no-crossing BV} condition is equivalent with a seemingly stronger version of the same condition.

This document is submitted as input to the NuPECC Long Range Plan 2024 by three European members of the EIC Users Group Steering Committee (Vice Chair, one at-large member, and the EU Representative). We submit the document on behalf of the international EIC Users Group (EICUG) community, but we specifically represent 335 European members of the EICUG (25%) based in 80 institutions (30% of the total) located in Armenia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. This European involvement is an important driver of the EIC, but can also be beneficial for a number of related ongoing and planned nuclear physics experiments in Europe. In this document, the shared interest regarding scientific questions and detector R&D between the EIC and European nuclear physics communities is outlined. We prove the stability of entropy solutions of nonlinear conservation laws with respect to perturbations of the initial datum, the space-time dependent flux and the entropy inequalities. Such a general stability theorem is motivated by the study of problems in which the flux $P[u](t,x,u)$ depends possibly non-locally on the solution itself. For these problems we show the conditional existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions. Moreover, the relaxation of the entropy inequality allows to treat approximate solutions arising from various numerical schemes. This can be used to derive the rate of convergence of the recent particle method introduced in [Radici-Stra 2021] to solve a one-dimensional model of traffic with congestion, as well as recover already known rates for some other approximation methods.

This work presents the ASIMOV Prize for scientific publishing, which was launched in Italy in 2016. The prize aims to bring the young generations closer to scientific culture, through the critical reading of popular science books. The books are selected by a committee that includes scientists, professors, Ph.D. and Ph.D. students, writers, journalists and friends of culture, and most importantly, over 800 school teachers. Students are actively involved in the prize, according to the best practices of public engagement: they read, review the books and vote for them, choosing the winner. The experience is quite successful: 12,000 students from 270 schools all over Italy participated in the last edition. ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

We map the distribution of unpolarized quarks inside a unpolarized pion as a function of the quark's transverse momentum, encoded in unpolarized Transverse Momentum Distributions (TMDs). We extract the pion TMDs from available data of unpolarized pion-nucleus Drell-Yan processes, where the cross section is differential in the lepton-pair transverse momentum. In the cross section, pion TMDs are convoluted with nucleon TMDs that we consistently take from our previous studies. We obtain a fairly good agreement with data. We present also predictions for pion-nucleus scattering that is being measured by the COMPASS Collaboration.

We consider a class of aggregation-diffusion equations on unbounded one dimensional domains with Lipschitz nonincreasing mobility function. We show strong $L^1$-convergence of a suitable deterministic particle approximation to weak solutions of a class aggregation-diffusion PDEs (coinciding with the classical ones in the no vacuum regions) for any bounded initial data of finite energy. We study the discretization of generalized Wasserstein distances with nonlinear mobilities on the real line via suitable discrete metrics on the cone of N ordered particles, a setting which naturally appears in the framework of deterministic particle approximation of partial differential equations. In particular, we provide a $\Gamma$-convergence result for the associated discrete metrics as $N \to \infty$ to the continuous one and discuss applications to the approximation of one-dimensional conservation laws (of gradient flow type) via the so-called generalized minimizing movements, proving a convergence result of the schemes at any given discrete time step $\tau>0$. This the first work of a series aimed at shedding new lights on the interplay between generalized gradient-flow structures, conservation laws, and Wasserstein distances with nonlinear mobilities.

We present the potential of $\eta_{b,c}$ production in proton collisions to access the gluon transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). We present an extraction of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions based on more than two thousands data points from several experiments for two different processes: semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs. The baseline analysis is performed with a Monte Carlo replica method resumming large logarithms at N3LL accuracy. The resulting description of the data is very good ($\chi^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.06$). In the present work we deal with the existence of solutions for optimal control problems associated to transport equations. The behaviour of a population of individuals will be influenced by the presence of a population of control agents whose role is to lead the dynamics of the individuals towards a specific goal. The dynamics of the population of individuals is described by a suitable nonlocal transport equation, while the role of the population of agents is designed by the optimal control problem. This model has been first studied in [12] for a class of continuous nonlocal potentials, while in the present project we consider the case of mildly singular potentials in a gradient flow formulation of the target transport equation.

Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a particle accelerator facility planned for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York by the United States Department of Energy. EIC will provide capabilities of colliding beams of polarized electrons with polarized beams of proton and light ions. EIC will be one of the largest and most sophisticated new accelerator facilities worldwide, and the only new large-scale accelerator facility planned for construction in the United States in the next few decades. The versatility, resolving power and intensity of EIC will present many new opportunities to address some of the crucial and fundamental open scientific questions in particle physics. We present preliminary results on the leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon linearity function, which is directly connected to nucleon transverse-spin asymmetries originating from the density of linearly-polarized gluons. We report progresses on leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions, calculated in a spectator-model framework for the parent nucleon.
