Abstract: Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern. Abstract: Trabajo presentado en TERRAenVISION Environmental Issues Today: Scientific Solutions for Societal Issues, celebrado en Barcelona (España) del 27 de enero al 2 de febrero de 2018, This contribution results from international collaborative efforts of different research groups around the Mediterranean basin focusing on soil conservation and water management. We will present the most complete database of runoff and soil erosion information and analyze the records from 68 locations, including more than 22458 detail events between 1985-2015. Soil conservation and water planning are two of the most challenging problems around the Mediterranean basin due to climate conditions and human activity. We believe that future advances on understanding soil degradation by water should be developed under global approaches. In this contribution, we will present an analysis of atmospheric conditions, expressed by weather types and the resulted rainfall, runoff, and erosion and sediment yield around the Mediterranean basin. The weather types compile daily information about the different air masses responsible for rainfall, runoff and eventually erosion and sediment yield, and their analyses let us know the synchrony of the response at different sites around the Mediterranean basin. The analyses of the global dataset display different spatial patterns for rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield, related to different atmospheric patterns. This research will be a valuable tool for understanding the evolution of these environmental variables, and therefore it will allow future planning to design regional water management and soil conservation measures

Abstract: Soil erosion is one of the environmental problems of main concern in Mediterranean areas because of significant both on- and off-site issues such as soil loss, land degradation, reservoir siltation, water quality and ecological impacts. Even if it has longly been observed that major erosive events are almost always associated to extremely large or intense rainfall events, little is known on the exact nature of these events at the small catchment scale. One of the main reasons for this is that, frequently, the investigation of variables influencing sediment yield is done through the analysis of erosive events of highly variable magnitude, with the objective of deriving general log-relationships between sediment yield and hydrological variables. With such approach, the specificity of the most erosive events is often lost in the analysis where large events act as a single cluster at one extreme of the events distribution and their real magnitude is masked by the log scale.With the objective of determining the specific characteristics of the most erosive events, and to infer some of the key processes acting during them, this study presents an analysis of the 10 most erosive events recorded for a set of 10 small research catchments located in the Mediterranean region. The different catchments, grouped in the R-OSMed Network, are located in France (4), Spain (3), Italy (1), Portugal (1) and Tunisia (1); the catchments have areas ranging from 0.018 to 1.32 km2, mean annual precipitation from 236 to 1303 mmyear-1 and mean annual sediment yield between 7.5 and 6900 Mgkm-2year-1. In total more than 120 years of hydrological and sediment data (series between 3 and 29 years long) have been analysed to select the 10 most erosive events for each catchment. The study is based on the analysis of the relationship existing between a series of meteorological, hydrological and sediment related variables. First results show that the cumulated sediment yield of these 10 most erosive events represented a variable proportion (from 150 to 1500%) of the mean annual suspended sediment yield. The size of the catchments, their relative area with intense erosion and the mean annual rainfall were identified as the main causes of the differences between the catchments responses. For major erosive events, runoff depth was more dependent on rainfall depth than on rainfall intensity, whereas peakflow was not clearly related to any specific variable. Suspended sediment load during major erosive events was most often related to runoff depth and to peakflow discharge, but considering all catchments, no general relationship could be observed between suspended sediment concentration (maximum and mean) and rainfall or runoff variables. Results also show that the return periods associated to rainfall and flood characteristics may be used as a measure of the singularity of the diverse variables, allowing a better characterisation of major erosive events. Finally, the comparison between the responses of the different catchments helps to improve the knowledge of the hydrological and geomorphological functioning of each of them.

Abstract: Au sein d’une stratégie nationale de mobilisation des eaux de surface, la Tunisie a réalisé près de 700 lacs et barrages collinaires depuis les années 90, principalement dans la Dorsale tunisienne et le Cap Bon. En contribuant à l’envasement de ces retenues, l’érosion hydrique diminue la capacité de mobilisation. Pour raisonner une stratégie de lutte anti-érosive dans les bassins versants qui soit plus efficace que ce qu’elle n’est actuellement, il est fondamental de mieux identifier et comprendre les principaux mécanismes responsables de l’envasement des retenues. En milieu méditerranéen, le rôle des très nombreux systèmes ravinaires a plusieurs fois été pointé du doigt pour expliquer l’envasement rapide de certaines retenues.Dans ce contexte, le présent travail se fixe comme objectif d’évaluer, à l’échelle de la Dorsale et du Cap Bon, les facteurs qui expliquent la présence et la dynamique morphologique actuelle du ravinement.Pour cela, une démarche en trois étapes a été retenue. Il s’agit d’abord de cartographier, sous SIG, l’évolution des caractéristiques (position, caractéristiques géométriques, processus actifs) du réseau hydrographique (oueds et ravins) sur une période de plus de 50 ans par interprétation de différents jeux de photographies aériennes actuelles et historiques. Une cartographie des facteurs, aussi bien bio-physiques (géologie/pédologie et pente) qu’anthropiques (occupation du sol et aménagements), susceptibles d’expliquer la présence et la morpho-dynamique des systèmes ravinaires est également réalisée. La seconde étape consiste à établir le rôle des facteurs biophysiques et anthropiques sur la présence de ravins en analysant les corrélations spatiales entre facteurs et présence de ravins pour l’ensemble des dates analysées. 16. Déterminisme du ruissellement et de l'érosion hydrique de la parcelle au versant en milieu méditerranéen marneux

Abstract: La lutte contre l’érosion hydrique passe par une meilleure compréhension et modélisation des mécanismes en jeu depuis les zones « source » jusqu’aux zones de dépôt des sédiments. Ce papier présente et analyse 4 années de mesures du ruissellement et de l’érosion au niveau de trois stations de mesures construites sur le bassin versant de Kamech (Cap Bon, Tunisie) à l’exutoire d’une parcelle agricole (1.32 ha), d’une ravine (1.37 ha) et du micro-bassin (15.2 ha) englobant la parcelle et la ravine. L’objectif de ce papier est de tester les facteurs déterminants du ruissellement et de l’érosion sur chaque site et de comparer le fonctionnement hydro-érosif entre les trois stations. Les résultats montrent un comportement hydrologique et érosif très similaire aux trois échelles. Le ruissellement apparaît principalement guidé par la dynamique de fermeture des très nombreuses fentes de retrait qui apparaissent chaque été sur le bassin. De bonnes corrélations linéaires entre pluie et lame ruisselée ont pu être établies sur les trois stations en différenciant les périodes avant et après le cumul de pluie de 250 mm. Les masses érodées présentent de bonnes corrélations avec les débits maximaux (R² entre 0.64 et 0.97) et avec les masses érodées aux autres stations (R² de 0.88 à 0.96). Grâce à ces relations, les masses érodées ont pu être reconstituées pour les événements ruisselants sans données d’érosion mesurées, ces événements contribuant à moins de 20% des bilans érosifs. Sur les 4 années de mesure, les taux d’érosion atteignent 29.2 t/ha/an pour la parcelle, 38.4 t/ha/an pour la ravine et 22.1 t/ha/an pour le microbassin. Les différences de taux d’érosion s’expliquent principalement par i) la contribution des flancs de la ravine mesurées par des suivis topographiques, ii) la présence au sein du microbassin de zones de parcours (3.6 ha) peu productrices de sédiments.

Abstract: An extensive database of short to medium-term erosion rates as measured on erosion plots in Europe under natural rainfall was compiled from the literature. Statistical analysis confirmed the dominant influence of land use and cover on soil erosion rates. Sheet and rill erosion rates are highest on bare soil; vineyards show the second highest soil losses, followed by other arable lands (spring crops, orchards and winter crops). A land with a permanent vegetation cover (shrubs, grassland and forest) is characterised by soil losses which are generally more than an order of magnitude lower than those on arable land. Disturbance of permanent vegetation by fire leads to momentarily higher erosion rates but rates are still lower than those measured on arable land. We also noticed important regional differences in erosion rates. Erosion rates are generally much lower in the Mediterranean as compared to other areas in Europe; this is mainly attributed to the high soil stoniness in the Mediterranean. Measured erosion rates on arable and bare land were related to topography (slope steepness and length) and soil texture, while this was not the case for plots with a permanent land cover. We attribute this to a fundamental difference in runoff generation and sediment transfer according to land cover types. On the basis of these results we calculated mean sheet and rill erosion rates for the European area covered by the CORINE database: estimated rill and interrill erosion rates are ca. 1.2 t ha(-1) year for the whole CORINE area and ca. 3.6 t ha(-1) year(-1) for arable land. These estimates are much lower than some earlier estimates which were based on the erroneous extrapolation of small datasets. High erosion rates occur in areas dominated by vineyards, the hilly loess areas in West and Central Europe and the agricultural areas located in the piedmont areas of the major European mountain ranges. Abstract: ABSTRACT Mapping and monitoring linear erosion features (LEFs) over large areas is fundamental for a better understanding of the main erosion processes and for planning suitable protection measures. The advent of very high-resolution satellite imagery has expanded the range of satellite LEF identification to moderate-size elements. After determining the relationship between satellite imagery resolution and the ability to detect LEFs, we discuss a highly automated method for extracting such LEFs from a very high spatial resolution image (0.61 m resolution). The method is based on a two-stage strategy: (1) extraction of all linear features visible on the satellite image using filters and photo-interpretation; (2) filtering these linear features according to geometric criteria (e.g. orientation relative to slope, sinuosity, position in landscape, etc.) so as to retain only those relative to linear erosion. A series of three images with increasing spatial resolution (10.5 and 0.61 m) was prepared for an area on the Cap Bon peninsula (Tunisia). This predominantly agricultural area has a high density of LEFs with very varied geometric characteristics. The area's problems are both onsite for the agriculture itself, and offsite with the silting up of hillside reservoirs. Respectively 22 per cent, 37 per cent and 73 per cent of the site's LEFs, with respective average widths of 2.8, 3.0 and 2.2 m, are visible on the 10, 5 and 0.61 m resolution images. Gully identification should help to identify the most threatened areas to help land use planning and management or to validate erosion models whether at regional or local (drainage basin) scale. Abstract: Este artículo contiene 16 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas., Soil degradation by water is a serious environmental problem worldwide, with specific climatic factors being the major causes. We investigated the relationships between synoptic atmospheric patterns (i.e. weather types, WTs) and runoff, erosion and sediment yield throughout the Mediterranean basin by analyzing a large database of natural rainfall events at 68 research sites in 9 countries. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify spatial relationships of the different WTs including three hydro-sedimentary variables: rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield (SY, used to refer to both soil erosion measured at plot scale and sediment yield registered at catchment scale). The results indicated 4 spatial classes of rainfall and runoff: (a) northern sites dependent on North (N) and North West (NW) flows; (b) eastern sites dependent on E and NE flows; (c) southern sites dependent on S and SE flows; and, finally, (d) western sites dependent on W and SW flows. Conversely, three spatial classes are identified for SY characterized by: (a) N and NE flows in northern sites (b) E flows in eastern sites, and (c) Wand SW flows in western sites. Most of the rainfall, runoff and SY occurred during a small number of daily events, and just a few WTs accounted for large percentages of the total. Our results confirm that characterization by WT improves understanding of the general conditions under which runoff and SY occur, and provides useful information for understanding the spatial variability of runoff, and SY throughout the Mediterranean basin. Abstract: Producción Científica, Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern. 31. Landscaping compromises for land degradation neutrality: The case of soil erosion in a Mediterranean agricultural landscape.

Abstract: Soil erosion is the primary process driving land degradation. Using multiple scales of management to minimize soil erosion is crucial to achieve land degradation neutrality targets within the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. Land management (LM) influences both on-site and off-site erosion on the event-scale and over the long-term. However, each LM differs in effectiveness depending on the temporal scale considered. In order to understand how LM effects internal and external catchment dynamics, we apply LandSoil, a physically based landscape evolution model, to evaluate 7 LM scenarios over long- (30 years) and short-terms (event scale). LM scenarios included changes in land use and/or landscape structure. Under current LM, mean surface soil erosion was ∼0.69 ± 39·10 -3  m over 30 years. In contrast, a single extreme event (435 mm/24 h) in January resulted in ∼0.62 ± 3·10 -3  m loss and ∼0.04 ± 2·10 -3  m if it occurred in October. Heterogeneous patterns of erosion and deposition developed after 30 years, whereas extreme events dominantly showed soil loss and high catchment connectivity. Effectiveness of LM in erosion mitigation and sediment trapping differed according to temporal and spatial scales for each scenario. We concluded that multiple temporal and spatial scales must be incorporated in order to adaptively manage land degradation and meet neutrality targets., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. 32. Anaerobic digestion of Brewery Spent Grains: Trace elements addition requirement.

Abstract: The current study evaluates and compares the stability of anaerobic digestion of Brewery Spent Grains (BSG) with and without addition of nutrients. Based on the composition of the BSG two levels of nutrients addition were defined. Control reactor, without addition of nutrients, showed signs of instability after 3months of operation and collapsed. On the contrary, supplemented reactors led to a COD removal rate of 60% and a methane production of 280NLCH 4 .kg -1 VS added . 33. Enantiomeric fractionation as a tool for quantitative assessment of biodegradation: The case of metoprolol.

Abstract: An efficient chiral liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry method has been developed for the determination of metoprolol (MTP) and three of its major metabolites, namely O-desmethylmetoprolol (O-DMTP), α-hydroxymetoprolol (α-HMTP) and metoprolol acid (MTPA) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) influents and effluents. The optimized analytical method has been validated with good quality parameters including resolution >1.3 and method quantification limits down to the ng/L range except for MTPA. On the basis of this newly developed analytical method, the stereochemistry of MTP and its metabolites was studied over time in effluent/sediment biotic and sterile microcosms under dark and light conditions and in influents and effluents of 5 different WWTPs. MTP stereoselective degradation was exclusively observed under biotic conditions, confirming the specificity of enantiomeric fraction variations to biodegradation processes. MTP was always biotransformed into MTPA with a (S)-enantiomer enrichment. The results of enantiomeric enrichment pointed the way for a quantitative assessment of in situ biodegradation processes due to a good fit (R(2) > 0.98) of the aerobic MTP biodegradation to the Rayleigh dependency in all the biotic microcosms and in WWTPs because both MTP enantiomers followed the same biodegradation kinetic profiles. These results demonstrate that enantiomeric fractionation constitutes a very interesting quantitative indicator of MTP biodegradation in WWTPs and probably in the environment., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. 34. A method for modeling the effects of climate and land use changes on erosion and sustainability of soil in a Mediterranean watershed (Languedoc, France).

Abstract: Global climate and land use changes could strongly affect soil erosion and the capability of soils to sustain agriculture and in turn impact regional or global food security. The objective of our study was to develop a method to assess soil sustainability to erosion under changes in land use and climate. The method was applied in a typical mixed Mediterranean landscape in a wine-growing watershed (75 km(2)) within the Languedoc region (La Peyne, France) for two periods: a first period with the current climate and land use and a second period with the climate and land use scenarios at the end of the twenty-first century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change A1B future rainfall scenarios from the Météo France General circulation model was coupled with four contrasting land use change scenarios that were designed using a spatially-explicit land use change model. Mean annual erosion rate was estimated with an expert-based soil erosion model. Soil life expectancy was assessed using soil depth. Soil erosion rate and soil life expectancy were combined into a sustainability index. The median simulated soil erosion rate for the current period was 3.5 t/ha/year and the soil life expectancy was 273 years, showing a low sustainability of soils. For the future period with the same land use distribution, the median simulated soil erosion rate was 4.2 t/ha/year and the soil life expectancy was 249 years. The results show that soil erosion rate and soil life expectancy are more sensitive to changes in land use than to changes in precipitation. Among the scenarios tested, institution of a mandatory grass cover in vineyards seems to be an efficient means of significantly improving soil sustainability, both in terms of decreased soil erosion rates and increased soil life expectancies., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. 35. Screening triclocarban and its transformation products in river sediment using liquid chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry.

Abstract: An analytical method was developed and validated for the target screening of triclosan (TCS), triclocarban (TCC) and its lesser and higher chlorinated congeners namely, 4,4'-dichlorocarbanilide (DCC) 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorocarbanilide (3-Cl-TCC) and 2,3',4,4'-tetrachlorocarbanilide (2-Cl-TCC) in river sediment. Sediment samples were extracted by pressurized liquid extraction and quantification and identification of target compounds were carried by liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). The overall method recoveries were 89% with relative standard deviations below 6%. Method detection limits ranged from 0.01 to 0.12 ng/g. The usefulness of the method was demonstrated on sediment samples collected downstream of three wastewater treatment plants in an attempt to provide with a set of occurrence data of these biocides in France and for a better understanding of their fate in river. Major results are the following: TCC, DCC and 3-Cl-TCC were ubiquitously detected demonstrating that these emerging contaminants have been probably overlooked in France. Reductive dechlorination of TCC into DCC was also ubiquitous but predominated in anoxic sediment. 3-Cl-TCC is probably more persistent than TCC and LC-HRMS enabled the detection and identification of a suite of other chlorinated biocides in river sediment., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
