Flashes from the Dark was the 1941 debut by Jamaican poet Ferdinand Levy, published in Dublin while he was a medical student. It brought something of the Harlem Renaissance to Lower Baggot Street. Despite favorable reviews by Irish poets such as Austin Clarke and others, Levy has vanished from literary posterity. His many passions--literary, political, musical--situate him at a properly intersectional literary history of mid-century Dublin, and he critiques the particular structure of systemic racism in 1930s and '40s Ireland. Levy's 'decolonial cosmopolitanism' mounts a challenge to nationalist tendencies within the mainstay of Irish postcolonial thinking, a factor in his occlusion. His awkward poetics--wavering between a belated signature of the Harlem Renaissance and parodies of English sonnets and ballads--constitutes 'mimicry' in HomiBhabha's sense--destabilizing white discourse with 'flashes from the dark.' The current paper used eye tracking to examine the influence of implicit racial bias on the visual examination and recognition of own- and other-race face identities. Implicit bias favoring the own-race group was not associated with differences in the amount of time spent looking at the internal features (i.e., right eye, left eye, nose, mouth) of other-race faces during an old/new identity recognition task. However, larger implicit biases favoring the own-race group was associated with longer total dwell times towards the internal features of own-race faces during the test phase of the identity recognition task. As we enter the twenty-first century, reflexive approaches to the history of folklore studies around the world, along with the antiracist and decolonizing efforts in academic studies in general, have led to a series of paradigmatic shifts away from the Eurocentric systems of defining genre, folk, racial group, and identity. What remains to be essential, yet to be fully subverted, is the concept and practice of 'racial/ethnic groups' that is still used by folklorists in studying folklores in cultural groups. Continuously drawing the boundaries through the concept of 'race' is nothing but reinforcing the existing racist system. Unless we build dialogues across the existing 'racial' boundaries and seek new common terms and concepts, we are not able to make progress in understanding and accepting the nature and reality of our hybridized folklore traditions that inform the folk groups that we are in, as well as our own personal identities. In spite of being written over three decades ago, Mills's posthumously published 'Manifesto' not only anticipates but transcends the majority, if not the totality, of the scholarship on Tolkien, race, and racisms which has been published since 2003. Although critics have addressed this topic using the familiar contexts of Hemingway's life, his iceberg theory, or intertextuality, this article argues that a fluid, combinatory context is necessary in the twenty-first century classroom.
