10. Paving the Way for Sustainability: A Study on Porous Asphalt Mixtures Reinforced with LDPE Plastic Waste and Freshwater Mussel (Pilsbryoconcha Exilis) Shell Filler

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the impact of different fillers, namely conventional (stone ash) and alternative (mussel shell powder), along with varying percentages of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) additives, on the performance of porous asphalt mixtures. The Marshall Stability and Flow of asphalt mixtures were examined with LDPE percentages of 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%. Results highlighted that the choice of filler and LDPE content significantly influences the mixture's stability and flow. A shift from 100% stone ash to 50% mussel shell powder resulted in a slight decrease in stability for 0% and 2% LDPE, whereas for 4% and 6% LDPE, the stability was notably higher with the inclusion of the alternative filler. Mixtures with 100% stone ash exhibited increased flow values with rising LDPE concentrations, while mixtures with 100% mussel shell powder showed an opposite trend. Furthermore, mixtures containing mussel powder generally had higher flow values than those with stone ash at similar LDPE percentages. The study underscores the intricate relationship between filler types and LDPE additives in influencing the properties of asphalt mixtures. These findings pave the way for the potential use of alternative fillers in asphalt mixtures, emphasizing the importance of understanding material interactions for optimal pavement design.

Abstract

In the composition of the asphalt mixture, the filler is vital to the aggregate skeleton. One of the filler functions is to increase the mixture's stability and density by filling the void in a bigger aggregate. However, since the filler requirement needs to be smaller than 0.075 mm, it isn't easy to collect enough quantity to fulfill the mixture requirement. Hence, this study aims to study the Faunus ater waste as filler in asphalt concrete wearing coarse (AC-WC) mixture, since it is a waste and has little economic value. This study incorporates Bina Marga's specifications and following the standard Marshall testing method to investigate the effect of utilizing Faunus ater (FA) shell as filler. The result shows that the addition of Faunus ater shell in the mixture shows an increase in both stability and flow testing results. Thus, Faunus ater addition as filler may have a good impact on the pavement in terms of stability; however, it needs conservative treatment since the Marshall flow became high. 15. Characterization of Porous Asphalt Mixture Using Faunus Ater Shell Ash as Filler and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as Bitumen Additive

Abstract

This study proposed using Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Faunus ater shell ash (FAA) waste as asphalt binder additives and filler substitutions, respectively, to increase the strength and stability of porous asphalt. A thorough investigation of porous asphalt mixture properties was carried out using a permeability test, void in the mix (VIM), Marshall stability, and cantabro loss (CL). In this study, the stone dust filler was substituted by 0%, 50%, and 100% of FAA. In addition, 2%, 4%, and 6% of PET were used as asphalt binder additives. The permeability test result was in line with the VIM measurement, resulting in Mix 2 (50% stone dust, 50%FAA, and 2% PET) having the highest permeability and VIM value. In comparison, Mix 4 (100% stone dust and 4% PET) has the lowest permeability and VIM value. The Marshal stability results were in reverse with the permeability and VIM value, where Mix 4 resulted in the highest Marshall stability of 1519 kg. The majority of the CL test result was in line with the permeability and VIM value, where the only mixture that failed to satisfy the minimum 35% of CL value was Mix 2 with the CL value of 36%.
