Drug abuse is a public health issue, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to determine the prevalence rate of drugs use and to identify certain factors that can serve as predictors of drug use. A total of 431 students from Mohammed V University in Rabat participated in this descriptive cross-sectional survey. The prevalence of drug use (regular users and experimenters) was 32.9%. Cannabis has a frequency of 13%, whereas other substances and other psychotropics have a prevalence of 3.8%. The most common average age of onset of substance use was 15. Males had the greatest likelihood of becoming drug addicts. We discovered a high consumption of drugs among university students at the end of this work, implying the need to establish a programme to combat drug addiction, the starting point of which will undoubtedly be prevention at the primary and secondary school levels, requiring the participation of all those involved in the field of education.

Aim The lack of availability of antidotes is a challenge for hospitals all over the world. The objective of our study was to investigate the availability of antidotes in Moroccan hospitals. Methods A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted from November 2018 to April 2019. The questionnaire was sent to 25 hospitals in order to investigate the availability of 42 selected antidotes based on the International Programme on Chemical Safety list. Results The survey response rate was 68%. Of the 42 selected antidotes, 38 (90.5%) were available depending on the hospitals included in the study. We found a strong correlation between the availability of antidotes and hospital bed capacity, and logistic regression analysis revealed that bed capacity is the only factor strongly associated with higher antidote stock levels. Some essential antidotes such as digoxin-specific antibody, protamine sulfate, flumazenil and glucagon were unavailable in many of the small- and medium-sized hospitals, and methylene blue, sodium nitroprussiate, Prussian blue and anti-snake venom were absent in all of the hospitals. Conclusion Despite the great efforts that have been made to improve the availability of antidotes in Morocco, some of these vital products are still lacking in Moroccan hospitals.

The 99m Tc-DTPA (Technetium99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid), is a radiopharmaceutical used in renal scintigraphy. The human serum albumin (HSA) binding site(s) for the 99m Tc-DTPA have never been characterized. This study will cover in vitro the binding rates of 99m Tc-DTPA on HSA and the 99m Tc-DTPA competition interactions with two drugs having known human serum albumin binding sites. Furosemide (FUR) and metformin (MET) were added to 99m Tc-DTPA solution (weight ratios 1/1 vol:vol) followed by the quantification of 99m Tc-DTPA binding rates to HSA (40 g/L) using equilibrium dialysis and the qualification of this binding using Molecular Modeling methods. The 99m Tc-DTPA binding rates to human serum albumin increased with the highest concentration. Both drugs FUR and MET displaced 99m Tc-DTPA binding. 99m Tc-DTPA could bind to human serum albumin in many locations in site I and I-II, but strongly bound to site I through hydrogen bonds.

The transmembrane glycoprotein CD36, which is responsible of the metabolic disorders, and the elevated intake of fat induces lipid buildup, is a multifunctional scavenger receptor signaling those functions in high-affinity tissue uptake of long-chain fatty acids. In this study, we used series of molecular dynamics simulations of the wild type and mutants types K164A CD36 protein interacting with one Palmitic acid (PLM) besides simulations of the wild type interacting with the three PLM to find out the mechanism of the functioning of the complex CD36/Fatty acids and the unraveling of the role of the mutation. Additionally we determined whether Lys164, mostly exposed to protein surface, played important roles in fatty acid uptake. These simulations revealed, the conformational changes induced by Lys164 residue and the altered interactions induced by the mutagenesis of surface lysine that was badly influencing the folding, utility, solubility, and stability form of the variant. Furthermore, Lys164 residue provided the structural basis of forming an opening at the region of principal portal for the dissociation of palmitic acid. The results of our simulations revealed hole two fatty acids found in CD36 cavity structure and it was the most preferred to CD36 structure stabilization.

Background and aims: Several studies have shown that genetic polymorphisms of the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) are highly associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its associated complications in several populations. The aim of our study was to investigate the association of the rs7903146 (C/T) and rs12255372 (G/T) polymorphism in the TCF7L2 gene with the risk of developing T2DM in the Moroccan population. Material and methods: A total of 150 T2DM patients and 100 healthy controls were recruited for various anthropometric, biochemical and genetic parameters. Genotyping was performed by using Real Time-PCR. The frequency of genotypes, alleles, anthropometric measures, glycemia, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were evaluated in patients and control, while lipid profile was available only for T2DM group. Results: Glycemia, HbA1c and body mass index (BMI) were significantly higher in T2DM group than control. Analysis of the distribution of the TCF7L2 rs7903146 genotype and allele revealed that the TT genotype was more frequent in T2DM group (24.0%) than in healthy controls (5%) (OR = 4.08, 95% confidence interval (CI = 1.95–11.80, p &lt, 0.0001). The T allele was more frequent in diabetic patients (45.2%) than healthy control (34.5%) and it was associated with high risk of diabetes (OR = 2.13, 95% CI = 1.12–7.31, p = 0.005). The same results were found regarding rs12255372, TT genotype frequencies were 18,7% and 6.0% in T2DM and control group, respectively (OR = 3.11, 95% CI = 1.33–7.24, p = 0.004). The T allele was over-presented in diabetics compared to controls (45.3% and 38.0%, respectively) and increases the risk of T2DM (OR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.04–3.10, p = 0.01). However, there was no significant difference between the three genotypes of rs7903146 and rs12255372 regarding age, BMI, glycemia, HbA1c and lipid profile. Conclusion: The present study confirmed a significant association of the TCF7L2 gene (rs7903146 (C/T) and rs12255372 (G/T) polymorphisms with a higher risk to T2DM in the Moroccan population. No significant difference in respect to anthropometric and metabolic parameters between different genotypes.

The aim of CONTAMILK study was to estimate levels of contamination of breast milk (BM) of Moroccan nursing mothers by some xenobiotics including, lead (Pb), to identify associated factors of exposure and to determine the daily intake of newborns. Lead concentrations were determined in 70 samples of colostrum by ICPMS and a structured questionnaire was filled during milk collection to report participants’ data. The median lead concentration was 908 μg/L (range 1.38–515,39 μg/L) and in 79 % of samples, levels were higher than the normal range reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) in BM (2−5 μg/L). Indeed, preterm delivery, frequency of use of cosmetic powders and lipsticks were significantly associated with the level of lead in BM. The estimated daily intake was greater than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of the European food safety authority (0.5 μg/kg/day) for 39 babies and 6 babies according to the WHO (3.6 μg/kg/day).

Objective: Virgin Argan oil (VAO) is of interest in oxidative stress and lipid profile because of its fat composition and antioxidant compounds. We investigated the effect of VAO consumption on lipid profile and antioxidant status in hemodialysis patients after a 4-week period of consumption. Methods: In a crossover, controlled trial, 37 patients (18 men, 19 women) with end-stage renal disease on maintenance hemodialysis, were randomly assigned to a 4-week VAO diet. Fasting plasma lipids, vitamin E and oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) were analyzed. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was determined before and after hemodialysis session. Results: There was no significant change in serum total cholesterol and ox-LDL. However, VAO consumption decreased the levels of triglyceride (p = 0.03), total cholesterol (p = 0.02) and low-density lipoprotein (p = 0.03) and increased the levels of high-density lipoprotein (p = 0.01). Introduction: Mortality and morbidity related to traumatic brain injuries still remain high in patients. Many authors reported the importance of Selenium in maintaining the integrity of brain functions. This fact is supported by clinical evidence that therapy with selenium supplementation could help patients suffering from brain disorders like neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of our study was to assess the relationship between Selenium concentration in serum and evolution of comatose patients with severe traumatic brain injury, in the first week of admission, and the correlation between selenium and C-reactive protein. Methods: This case-control study was conducted with 64 comatose patients with TBI, in the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, IbnSina University Hospital and Hospital of specialties in Rabat-Morocco, and healthy volunteers recruited in Blood transfusion center of Rabat. Blood sampling was collected from TBI patients, in the first week (3h after admission and each 48h during one week), and from healthy volunteers one time. Concentration of Se in serum was determined by electrochemical atomic absorption spectrometry. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistical software (SPSS) and the cases and controls were compared using the Mann- Whitney U test. A P-value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: Comparison selenium concentration in the first day (D0), third day (D2) and fifth day according to the death and survival statue in patients did not show statistical significance (p > 0.05). Selenium concentration of D0 in patients and Selenium concentration in control group also did not show statistical significance (p > 0.05). Similarly, we did not report a correlation between selenium and C-reactive protein. Conclusion: According to our data selenium and CRP may not play a role in progression of coma state in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

Background: Haemodialysis patients are at risk of developing trace elements imbalance and lipid peroxidation. The present study was aimed to assess plasma levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se) and malondialdehyde (MDA) of haemodialysis patients and to investigate the possible effect of haemodialysis on these trace elements and MDA imbalance. Methods: Blood samples of fifty hemodialysis patients and forty healthy controls subjects were analyzed for determination of hemoglobin, albumin, creatinine, urea and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Cu, Zn and Se were determined in plasma (before and after hemodialysis) and erythrocytes and MDA in plasma before and after hemodialysis. Results: The study showed that, plasma Zn and Se concentrations were lower in haemodialysis patients compared to that of healthy controls, while plasma Cu, MDA and Cu/Zn ratio were higher. Plasma Cu/Zn ratios were positively correlated to MDA and weakly correlated to hs-CRP levels whereas plasma Se concentrations were inversely correlated to MDA. In addition, MDA levels increased after haemodialysis session. Conclusions: Based on the results of the present study regarding the imbalance of trace elements in haemodialysis patients, it seems reasonable to periodically assess the trace elements status and consider possible correctional therapy in case of deficiency.

Background: In India economic problems like dowry and related issues play a major role in the problems of marriage and separation The aim of the present study is to assess the psychological impact on married females who living away from their spouses, and comparison of the psychiatric morbidity with the married women who are living with their spouses. Methods: A total of 35 subjects were included in the study. Intake proforma was specially designed for study and the questions were divided into 4 subscales (somatic complaints anxiety/insomnia social dysfunction and severe depression). Results: The study clearly revealed that the occupational separation has a significant negative impact on the marital quality of the women spouses of men working abroad or living away. Comparison with the marital quality of the control group, the group does not have the separation; the study group differs significantly in marital quality. The factors such as social support from family and friends, the stay of the study group with parents or in-laws, and duration of pre-separation, the study proved that there is no significant difference exists on the marital quality of the study group based on these factors. Conclusions: The numbers of females who were separated from their spouses are more likely to have psychiatric illnesses due the additional work load of looking after the children and managing the household activities. The study also found that the females staying with their parents after the separation from their spouses were less likely to have a severe psychiatric morbidity as they felt comfortable due the cooperation from their parents.

Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that usually attacks the lungs but sometimes attacks other parts of the body, such as the kidneys, glands, and bones. It is an endemic and major public health problem in Morocco. Tuberculosis is transmitted through the airways via the inhalation of microdroplets containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis . We present here the whole-genome shotgun sequences of three multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis strains isolated from Morocco.

Background/aim: Type 2 diabetes is a heterogeneous and multifactorial metabolic disorder with some relationship to oxidative stress (OS). Since no studies were conducted in the Moroccan population, this clinical investigation aimed at evaluating the antioxidants status in Moroccan patients with type 2 diabetes. Materials and methods: Blood samples of 60 type 2 diabetic patients and 40 healthy controls subjects were analyzed for determination of glycemia, hemoglobin, CRP, glycated hemoglobin, lipid parameters, malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamins E and C, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se). Results: CRP and triglycerides were higher in the diabetic group while high-density lipoprotein levels were significantly lower compared to the control group. Plasma MDA, Cu concentrations, and Cu/Zn ratio were found to be higher in diabetic patients compared to healthy subjects, while vitamin E, Zn, and Se concentrations were lower compared to the control group. No significant difference was found in vitamin C levels between the two groups. Plasma HbA1c was positively correlated to MDA levels. Conclusion: This study shows that antioxidant status is impaired in diabetics compared to healthy controls.

Background: Several trace elements have been implicated in the etiology of type 2 diabetes, they can influence the onset or pathogenesis of diabetes in various ways including disruption of normal metabolism of glucose and insulin. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the serum status of copper, zinc, selenium, chromium and manganese in Moroccan type 2 diabetics compared to control group.Methods: Blood samples from 100 type 2 diabetics and 90 control subjects were analyzed for blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (only for diabetics), lipid status and serum trace elements concentrations.Results: Glucose and triglyceride values were statistically higher in diabetics; while those of HDL-cholesterol were lower. Concentrations of zinc, selenium, chromium, and manganese were lower in diabetics compared to controls. In contrast, copper concentrations were higher.Conclusions: The status of trace elements is impaired in type 2 diabetics compared to a control group.

Paraphenylenediamine is an aromatic amine used as a hair dye; it is responsible for poisoning characterized by respiratory distress involving life-threatening. The objective of this work is the development and validation of an assay of para-phenylenediamine in the whole blood. The method is based on the determination of paraphenylene diamine in whole blood by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after liquid-liquid extraction and derivatization. The validation protocol has included the study of the recovery factor of extraction, the measurement range, accurency, repetability and intermediate precision. The calibration curve was linear between 98 and 1350 μg/L (r = 0.999), the limit of detection and quantification were 37 μg/L and 63 μg/L respectively. The accuracy were 94.7%. Coefficients of variation were (2.3/6.8/9.7%) for repeatability and (4.4/8.7/9.8%) for intermediate precision. The method is suitable for quantification of PPD in acute poisoning situations. A method for the determination of the paraphenylene diamine in the whole blood by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was developed. The validation of the method showed good linearity, good accuracy and low limit of quantification.

Introduction Plusieurs elements traces metalliques ont ete impliques dans l’etiologie du diabete de type 2. Ils peuvent, selon plusieurs etudes, influencer l’apparition ou la pathogenese du diabete de diverses manieres notamment la perturbation du metabolisme normal du glucose et de l’insuline. Le but de notre travail est d’evaluer le statut serique du cuivre, du zinc, du selenium, du chrome et du manganese chez les diabetiques de type 2 compare a celui d’un groupe temoin. Materiel et methode Les prelevements sanguins de 70 diabetiques de type 2 et 60 sujets cliniquement et biologiquement saints ont ete analyses pour determiner la glycemie, l’hemoglobine glyquee (seulement pour les diabetiques), le bilan lipidique et les concentrations serique en elements traces metalliques. Resultats Les valeurs de la glycemie et des triglycerides ont ete statistiquement plus eleve chez les diabetiques, alors que celles du cholesterol-HDL ont ete plus faibles (p Conclusion Notre etude montre que le statut en elements traces metalliques est altere chez le diabetique de types 2 compare a un groupe controle. In the present study, a 'novel' toxin, called Am IT from the venom of scorpion Androctonus mauretanicus is isolated and characterized. A detailed analysis of the action of Am IT on insect axonal sodium currents is reported. Am IT was purified through gel filtration followed by C18 reversed-phase HPLC. Toxicity of Am IT in vivo was assessed on male German cockroach (Blattella germanica) larvae and C57/BL6 mice. Cross-reactivity of Am IT with two β-toxins was evidenced using (125)I-iodinated toxin-based radioimmunoassays with synaptosomal preparations from rat brain. The complete amino acid sequence of Am IT was finally determined by Edman sequencing. Am IT was observed to compete with AaH IT4 purified from the venom of scorpion Androctonus australis in binding assays. It was recognized by an antibody raised against a β-type toxin, which indicated some structural similarity with β-toxins (or related toxin family). The 'novel' toxin exhibited dual activity since it competed with anti-mammal toxins in binding assays as well as showed contracting activity to insect. The toxin competed with radio-labeled β-toxin Css IV by binding to Na(+) channels of rat brain synaptosomes. Analysis of toxin amino acid sequences showed that Am IT shares high structural identity (92%) with AaH IT4. In conclusion, Am IT not only reveals an anti-insect compound properties secreted by 'Old World' scorpions, paralyzing insect larvae by binding to Na(+) channels on larvae's nerve-cell membranes, but also exerts toxic activity in mice, which is similar to anti-mammal toxins from 'New World' scorpions (North and South Americas). Therefore, Am IT appears to be structurally and functionally similar to AaH IT4.

Introduction Le chrome est un element trace essentiel qui joue un role cle dans le metabolisme du glucose. Plusieurs etudes ont montre que le statut en chrome se trouve profondement perturbe dans les deux types du diabete au point de proposer une supplementation chez les patients diabetiques. Cependant, les resultats restent assez heterogenes. Jusqu’a maintenant, aucune etude similaire n’a ete realisee au Maroc. Ainsi, le but de notre travail est d’evaluer le statut serique du chrome chez les diabetiques de type 2 compare a celui d’un groupe temoin. Materiel et methode Les prelevements sanguins de 60 diabetiques de type 2 et 50 sujets cliniquement et biologiquement saints ont ete analyses pour determiner la glycemie, l’hemoglobine glyquee (seulement pour les diabetiques), le bilan lipidique et le chrome serique. Resultats Les valeurs de la glycemie et des triglycerides ont ete statistiquement plus eleve chez les diabetiques, alors que celles du cholesterol-HDL et du chrome serique ont ete plus faibles comparees au groupe temoin ( p r = −0,73 : p = 0,031). Conclusion Cette etude montre que le statut en chrome est altere chez le diabetique de types 2 compare a un groupe controle. Ces resultats sont concordants avec certaines etudes publiees, mais en desaccord avec d’autres. Des etudes plus larges sont necessaires.

Acenocoumarol and carbimazole are two drugs widely prescribed, they can sometimes be used in the same time. There is no known drug interaction between the two drugs but we report a case of a serious hemorrhagic complication following the concomitant use of the acenocoumarol and carbimazole. A 70-year old man treated by acenocoumarol for an aortic and mitral valve replacement. For a clinical and biological hyperthyroidism, he began treatment with carbimazole, ten days before admission. Three days later, he developed a mucocutaneous icterus with major hemorrhagic syndrome. The outcome was favourable after stopping medication and the use of vitamin K.

Background: Vitamin D plays an important role in the immunomodulation and could be involved in the development of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). The study of the polymorphism of the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) gene may be of interest in explaining the pathophysiology of SLE.Methods: In this study, we aimed to examine the characteristics of VDR gene BsmI polymorphism for the first time in Moroccan patients with SLE and their relationship with clinical manifestations of the disease. We also measured the serum level of 25-hyroxyvitamin D3 to assess its relation to such polymorphism.Results: The study included 66 SLE patients and 91 healthy controls. Our results showed that there were no differences observed in VDR genotypes and allelic distribution within the two groups. Both groups were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with no significant P values for the observed and expected genotype frequencies. 25-hyroxyvitamin D3 serum levels were the same in the two groups.Conclusions: Based on the results of the present study. We cannot verify any association between VDR gene BsmI polymorphism and SLE. This polymorphism could not be regarded as a genetic marker of the SLE. A larger study examining BsmI and other VDR gene polymorphisms is needed.

Introduction Le diabete de type 2 est un desordre metabolique multifactoriel dont les liens sont documentes avec le stress oxydatif (SO). A defaut d’etudes marocaines dans ce domaine, ce travail s’est interesse a l’evaluation du statut antioxydant chez les diabetiques de type 2. Methode Les prelevements sanguins de soixante diabetiques de type 2 et de quarante controles cliniquement sains ont ete analyses pour la determination de la glycemie, l’hemoglobine, la C reactive proteine (CRP), les parametres lipidiques, le malondialdehyde (MDA), les vitamines E et C, le cuivre (Cu), le zinc (Zn) et le selenium (Se). Resultats Les valeurs de la CRP et des triglycerides ont ete plus elevees chez les diabetiques, alors que, les lipoproteines du haut poids moleculaires ont ete plus faibles. Le MDA, le Cu et le rapport Cu/Zn ont ete plus eleves chez les patients diabetiques compares aux sujets controles, tandis que, les valeurs de la vitamine E, du Zn et de Se ont ete plus faibles. Les concentrations de la vitamine C ont ete comparables dans les deux groupes. Discussion Cette etude a montre que le statut antioxydant est altere chez les diabetiques compares aux sujets controles. Cet etat de stress oxydatif, qui est entretenu par la maladie, est associe, selon plusieurs etudes, au developpement des complications du diabete surtout d’ordre cardiovasculaire par la genese de la plaque d’atherome. Cet aspect de la maladie doit etre pris en consideration dans la prise en charge globale du diabete en corrigeant, si necessaire, les deficits documentes.

Dental caries represents a problem of public health in Morocco and the reduction of this pathology is a priority of the Ministry of Health. The use of fluoride toothpastes is, at present, recognized as being an effective means for the prevention of dental caries.[corrected] The aim of our study was to verify the correspondence of the information marked on packagings with the international standards, but also to determine using potentiometry the quantity of fluorine presents in toothpastes marketed in Morocco from three origins: pharmacies, hypermarkets and ambulant sellers.The study concerned 56 toothpastes, 73.2% of toothpastes respect the standards of the concerning WHO dates of manufacturing and lapsing. The type of fluoride was specified only on 67.8% of packagings and the used concentration of fluoride was indicated only in 62.5% of the tested samples. For 56 studied toothpastes, the results revealed that if we take into account standards recommended by the WHO and the European Union, only 57.1% of toothpastes could have an effect dental caries.The results of this study show that there is a real need of quality control of fluoride toothpastes sold in Morocco especially those of the itinerant market.
