Research indicates that downward particle flux in the North Atlantic Ocean, near the Mauritanian upwelling zone, is correlated with westward surface currents. Abstract

A study of live benthic foraminifera along a transect across the main area of organic matter deposition in the Cape Blanc upwelling region indicates that the benthic ecosystem is permanently influenced by the upwelling at the shallowest station at 1,200 m. At the deepest stations with depths of 3010 and 2530 m, the ocean bottom is vulnerable to significant organic influxes only during summer. Foraminiferal inhabitants are only indirectly controlled by pore water oxygen concentrations, since deep infaunal foraminiferal species are believed to feed selectively.

Abstract

A better understanding of the dynamics of different particulate organic matter (OM) pools in the coastal carbon budget is a key issue for quantifying the role of the coastal ocean in the global carbon cycle. To elucidate the benthic component of this carbon cycle at the land-sea interface, we investigated the carbon isotope signatures (δ13C and ∆14C) in the sediment pore waters dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in addition to the sediment OM to constrain the origin of the OM mineralized in sediments. The study site is located at the outlet of the Rhône River (Mediterranean Sea), which was chosen because this river is one of the most nuclearized rivers in Europe and nuclear 14C can serve as a tracer to follow the fate of the OM discharged by the river to the coastal sea. The ∆14C results found in the pore waters DIC show a general offset between buried and mineralized OM following a preferential mineralization model of young and fresh particles. For example, we found that the sediment OM has values with a mean ∆14C=–33‰ at sampling stations near the river mouth whereas enriched ∆14C values around +523‰ and +667‰ respectively were found for the pore waters DIC. This indicates complete mineralization of a riverine fraction of OM enriched in 14C in the river conduit during in-stream photosynthesis. In shelf sediments, the ∆14C of pore waters DIC is slightly enriched (+57‰) with sediment OM reaching –570‰. A mixing model shows that particles mineralized near the river mouth are certainly of riverine phytoplanktonic origin whereas OM mineralized on the shelf is of marine origin. This work highlights the fact that pore waters provide additional information compared to sediments alone and it seems essential to work on both pools to study the carbon budget in river prodelta. Abstract

Detection of high-energy neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources will open a new window on the Universe. The detection principle exploits the measurement of Cherenkov light emitted by charged particles resulting from neutrino interactions in the matter containing the telescope. A novel multi-PMT digital optical module (DOM) was developed to contain 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In order to maximize the detector sensitivity, each PMT will be surrounded by an expansion cone which collects photons that would otherwise miss the photocathode. Results for various angles of incidence with respect to the PMT surface indicate an increase in collection efficiency by 30% on average for angles up to 45° with respect to the perpendicular. Ray-tracing calculations could reproduce the measurements, allowing to estimate an increase in the overall photocathode sensitivity, integrated over all angles of incidence, by 27% (for a single PMT). Prototype DOMs, being built by the KM3NeT consortium, will be equipped with these expansion cones.© 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

A recent analysis of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data provided evidence for a high-intensity emission of high-energy gamma rays with a E-2 spectrum from two large areas, spanning 50° above and below the Galactic centre (the "Fermi bubbles"). A hadronic mechanism was proposed for this gamma-ray emission making the Fermi bubbles promising source candidates of high-energy neutrino emission. In this work Monte Carlo simulations regarding the detectability of high-energy neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles with the future multi-km3 neutrino telescope KM3NeT in the Mediterranean Sea are presented. Under the hypothesis that the gamma-ray emission is completely due to hadronic processes, the results indicate that neutrinos from the bubbles could be discovered in about one year of operation, for a neutrino spectrum with a cutoff at 100 TeV and a detector with about 6 km3 of instrumented volume. The effect of a possible lower cutoff is also considered. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

RNAi screening for kinases regulating the functional organization of the early secretory pathway in Drosophila S2 cells has identified the atypical Mitotic-Associated Protein Kinase (MAPK) Extracellularly regulated kinase 7 (ERK7) as a new modulator. We found that ERK7 negatively regulates secretion in response to serum and amino-acid starvation, in both Drosophila and human cells. Under these conditions, ERK7 turnover through the proteasome is inhibited, and the resulting higher levels of this kinase lead to a modification in a site within the C-terminus of Sec16, a key ER exit site component. This post-translational modification elicits the cytoplasmic dispersion of Sec16 and the consequent disassembly of the ER exit sites, which in turn results in protein secretion inhibition. We found that ER exit site disassembly upon starvation is TOR complex 1 (TORC1) independent, showing that under nutrient stress conditions, cell growth is not only inhibited at the transcriptional and translational levels, but also independently at the level of secretion by inhibiting the membrane flow through the early secretory pathway. These results reveal the existence of new signalling circuits participating in the complex regulation of cell growth. Abstract

The biogeochemical fate of the particulate organic inputs from the Rhône River was studied on a seasonal basis by measuring sediment oxygen uptake rates in the prodelta, both during normal and flood regimes. On a selected set of 10 stations in the prodelta and nearby continental shelf, in situ and laboratory measurements of sediment oxygen demand were performed in early spring and summer 2007 and late spring and winter 2008. In and ex situ sediment Diffusive Oxygen Uptakes (DOU) did not show any significant differences except for shallowest organic rich stations. DOU rates show highest values concentrated close to the river mouth (approx. 20 mmol O2 m-2 d-1) and decrease offshore to values around 4.5 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 preferentially in a south west direction, most likely as the result of the preferential transport of the finest riverine material. Total Oxygen Uptake (TOU) obtained from core incubation showed the same spatial pattern with an averaged TOU/DOU ratio of 1.2± 0.4. Over different seasons, spring summer and late fall, benthic mineralization rates presented this same stable spatial pattern. A flood of the Rhône River occurred in June 2008 and brought up to 30 cm of new soft muddy deposit. Right after this flood, sediment DOU rates close to the river mouth dropped from around 15–20 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 to values close to 10 mmol O2 m-2 d-1, in response to the deposition near the river outlet of low reactivity organic matter associated to fine material. Six months later, the oxygen distribution had relaxed back to its initial stage: the initial spatial distribution was found again underlining the active microbial degradation rates involved and the role of further deposits.
