Abstract

We use the sixth order linear parabolic equation \begin{equation} \frac{\partial y}{\partial t}=B\left(\alpha\frac{\partial^{6}y}{\partial x^{6}}-\frac{\partial^{4}y}{\partial x^{4}}\right),\ x\in \mathbb{R}_{+},\ t>0,\nonumber \end{equation} proposed by Rabkin and describing the evolution of a solid surface covered with a thin, inert and fully elastic passivation layer, to analyze the grain boundary groove formation on initially flat surface. We derive the corresponding boundary conditions and construct an asymptotic representation of the solution to this initial boundary value problem when $\alpha$ is small, by applying the theory of singular perturbation. We illustrate the effect of passivation film near and far from a grain boundary groove.

38. OPTIMAL SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF Ti6Al4V ALLOY FOR THE ADHESION OF HEK293 HUMAN CELLS

Abstract

The wetting behavior of surfaces strongly depends on their roughness. In this work we investigated the effect of surface roughness of Ti - 6 wt.%Al - 4 wt.% V alloy on the adhe-sion of HEK293 human cells. The array of linear scratches has been produced on the surface of cold-wrought Ti - 6 wt.%Al - 4 wt.% V alloy discs with the aid of various abrasive SiC papers with grit sizes of 220, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 2000 and 4000 (number of grains per cm2) and different diamond pastes with grain sizes 6, 3 and 1 μm. These SiC papers grades correspond to the SiC grain size of 68-7 μm. The resulted surface topography of the samples was examined by the conventional and confocal light microscopy and high-resolution scan-ning electron microscopy. Afterwards, the adhesion of the HEK293 human cells to the sam-ples of different roughness has been measured by fluorescence miscroscopy. The size and morphology of adhered cells were measured by the light miscroscopy. The fraction of adhered cells behaves non-monotonously with grain size. It is about 0.35 for grain size of 1 μm, it in-creases with increasing grain size up to 0.95 for grain size of 7 μm and then slowly decreases down to 0.55 at abrasive grain size of 68 μm. The position of maximum is comparable with the dimension of HEK293 cells (~14 μm). Thus, the variation of surface roughness opens the way to control and tailor the fraction of adhered cells, depending on demand of medical tech-niques.

Abstract

In a vacuum arc discharge, highly ionised species are formed, which permits an effective control of the deposition process and, particularly, to deposit Ti, TiN and TiO2 coatings on non-conducting materials like glass. Moreover, this technique allows us to position a mask between the substrates and the sheets to be coated. Another advantage of the vacuum arc technology is the low substrate temperature during the deposition. Data on the roughness, composition and corrosion resistance in architectural glass mask-coated with titanium nitride and oxide are presented and analysed in this work. A comparative analysis is made with reactive direct current sputtering and plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition techniques.La técnica de pulverización por arco eléctrico en vacío permite un control eficaz del proceso de deposición, ya que la temperatura del sustrato permanece baja durante dicho proceso. Además, mediante esta técnica pueden llevarse a cabo recubrimientos sobre superficies no conductoras y resulta posible la utilización de máscaras de plástico, colocadas entre la fuente y el sustrato a recubrir. En este trabajo se han llevado a cabo recubrimientos de Ti, TiN y TiO2 sobre vidrio arquitectónico. Los recubrimientos se han realizado con y sin dibujos, aplicados a través de máscaras. Se han estudiado algunas características de estos recubrimientos, como son la rugosidad, composición y resistencia contra la corrosión. Los análisis se han llevado a cabo mediante técnicas de microscopía de fuerza atómica, espectroscopía Auger y ensayos electroquímicos. Finalmente, se ha realizado un análisis comparativo con resultados obtenidos mediante otras técnicas de deposición.
