Introduction: Waltheria indica Linn (Malvaceae) is a widely distributed plant in West Africa. It is commonly used in Burkina Faso to treat inflammation-related diseases, including asthma. Previous reviews have focused on the ethnobotanical, traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological properties of Waltheria indica. This report aims to compile the biological and pharmacological activities that highlight the anti-asthmatic properties of Waltheria indica L. (W. indica). Method: Electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, Hinari, SciFinder, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, were used to gather data on Watheria indica. Data on the toxicological, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and bronchorelaxant effects of W. indica were collected. Results: Twenty-three studies describing the biological and pharmacological activities relevant to assessing the anti-asthmatic properties of W. indica were found. Nine articles investigated the anti-inflammatory effects, and three manuscripts were found to have bronchorelaxant activity. Five publications reported the antioxidant activity of the plant extracts. Research on the extracts revealed a tolerable safety profile in rats and mice with an LD50 ranging from 300 to 5000 mg/kg body weight, depending on the parts of the plant used. Phenolic compounds, particularly flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, were found to be responsible for the activities involved in the assessment of anti-asthmatic properties. Conclusion: The results of this review suggest that W. indica could be a valuable resource for the treatment of asthma and other respiratory diseases. However, further chemical and pharmacological investigations are needed to understand its mechanism of action in treating asthma.

Dermatoses are essentially caused by infection or free radical aggression, immunoallergic disorders, or can be secondary to general diseases. Management of dermatoses by modern medicine is complex and costly, and the development of alternative treatments is urgent. Opilia amentacea Roxb. is a woody climber plant traditionally used in Burkina Faso for treatment of bad skin diseases. This study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of extracts of O. amentacea and to characterize potent fractions. The antimicrobial activity was determined using the disc diffusion and microdilution methods, while antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The content of the plant extracts in polyphenols and flavonoids was also studied. The results revealed several secondary metabolites in the leaves, stems and root bark extracts of the plant, including sterols, triterpenes, and flavonoids and tannins, and a generally high total polyphenol and total flavonoid content. Dichloromethane fractions of leaves (FDFe) and stem barks (FDET) exhibited the best antioxidant activity and were the most active on Gram-positive bacilli. Hexane leaves (FHFe) and hexane root bark (FHER) fractions exhibited the best antifungal activity against Candida tropicalis. High correlation (R2 = 0.932) was found between the total flavonoid content of extracts and ferric-reducing antioxidant power. In view of these results, the present study describes O. amentacea as a potential source of antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant agents and justifies the traditional uses of the plant as an anti-dermatosis plant.

Objectives: Our study aimed to assess the statistical relationship between the use of chloroquine phosphate or hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin (CQ/HCQ + AZ) and virological recovery, disease worsening, and death among out- and inpatients with COVID-19 in Burkina Faso. Methods and Designs: This was a retrospective observational study that compared outcomes in terms of time to recovery, worsening, and death in patients who received CQ/HCQ + AZ and those who did not using a multivariable Cox or Poisson model before and after propensity matching. Results: Of the 863 patients included in the study, about 50% (432/863) were home-based follow-up patients and 50% were inpatients. Of these, 83.3% (746/863) received at least 1 dose of CQ/HCQ + AZ and 13.7% (118/863) did not. There were no significant differences in associated time to recovery for patients receiving any CQ/HCQ + AZ (adjusted HR 1.44; 95% CI 0.76–2.71). Similarly, there was no significant association between CQ/HCQ + AZ use and worsening (adjusted IRR 0.80; 95% CI 0.50–1.50). However, compared with the untreated group, the treated group had a lower risk of death (adjusted HR 0.20; 95% CI 0.10–0.44). Conclusions: The study provided valuable additional information on the use of CQ/HCQ in patients with COVID-19 and did not show any harmful outcomes of CQ/HCQ + AZ treatment.

Introduction: Ampelocissus africana is a medicinal plant used to treat several diseases, including those affecting the prostate. This study investigated the effects of the aqueous extract of rhizomes from Ampelocissus africana (AAA) on a testosterone propionate (TP)-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) model. Methods: The effect of the extract at 50, 150, and 300 mg/kg on BPH in male rats was assessed using daily subcutaneous injections of 3 mg/kg TP for four consecutive weeks. After the induction schedule, physical parameters, prostate index (PI), serum biochemical parameters, homogenate antioxidant, enzyme parameters, and prostates histopathological studies were carried out. Triterpenes and sterols were also assessed. Results: Treatment with AAA reduced the PI level in a dose-dependent manner (up to 75.91% at the dose of 300 mg/kg). The inflammatory marker measured in the present study, namely C-reactive protein, increased significantly in the BPH group and improved with the treatments. In addition, AAA reduced oxidative stress by decreasing the malondialdehyde (MDA) level and increasing the catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in comparison to the positive control group. A histopathological examination corroborated the result of the analysis of the physical and biochemical parameters. The study also showed interesting levels of triterpenes (119.5 ± 4.5 mg UAE/g) and sterols (104.6 ± 3.06 mg CE/g). Conclusion: These results suggest that the aqueous extract of Ampelocissus africana could be used as a natural herbal therapy to treat BPH.

Background: Waltheria indica L. (Malvaceae) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating inflammation and asthma. This study aimed to evaluate the antiasthmatic properties of the hydroethanolic extract derived from the stems and leaves of W. indica. Method: Phytochemical analysis was conducted using thin-layer chromatography, and phytoconstituents were quantified using appropriate techniques. The antioxidant activity was determined through DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS+ radical cation decolorization, ferric ion reduction, and lipid peroxidation inhibition. The fractions' acute general toxicity was assessed following the guidelines of OECD 423. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by inhibiting the 15-lipoxygenase and phospholipase A2 (PLA2), while the in vivo evaluation involved carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of body weight (b.w.). Results: The study revealed a total phenolic content of 116.03 ± 1.02 mg TAE/g in the residual fraction and 146.62 ± 2.02 mg TAE/g in the hydroethanolic extract. The extract and fractions also exhibited significant flavonoid content. The fractions' lethal dose was estimated to equal 5000 mg/kg b.w. Furthermore, the extract and fractions demonstrated substantial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusion: The observed pharmacological activities provide scientific evidence for the traditional medicinal use of the leafy stems of W. indica in treating asthma.

Although considerable effort and progress has been made in the search for new anticancer drugs and treatments in the last several decades, cancer remains a major public health problem and one of the major causes of death worldwide. Many sources, including plants, animals, and minerals, are of interest in cancer research because of the possibility of identifying novel molecular therapeutics. Moreover, structure-activity-relationship (SAR) investigations have become a common way to develop naturally derived or semi-synthetic molecular analogues with improved efficacy and decreased toxicity. In 2012, approximately 138 molecules from marine sources, including isolated compounds and their associated analogues, were shown to be promising anticancer drugs. Among these, 62% are novel compounds. In this report, we review the marine compounds identified in 2012 that may serve as novel anticancer drugs.
