This study aimed to demonstrate two protocols of Two-Dimensional Facial Approximation (2DFA) created with resources of the techniques of Facial Composite and Digital Three-Dimensional Facial Approximation. Both protocols were based on craniometric parameters and their facial correspondence obtained from a Cone-Beam computed tomography of a human skull. After this, this protocols were confronted with a photograph of the target subject. Said techniques, when compared with the photograph of the subject, demonstrated compatibilities and incompatibilities. With the obtained results, it is concluded that the two techniques can to be useful in the process of human facial recognition. Further research on the two protocols is suggested in order to assist the work of forensic professionals in the recognition of unidentified human skulls.

The primary objective of this paper is to report on the successful implementation of forensic facial approximation in a real case in the forensic context. A three-dimensional (3D) facial approximation protocol of the skull was performed with free software, applying techniques in a virtual environment that have already been consolidated in the literature. The skull was scanned with the photogrammetry technique, the digital replica was imported in the Blender software (Blender Foundation, Amsterdam) and individualized model sketches of the face were traced with the MakeHuman software (MakeHuman Org) according to the anthropological profile of the victim. The face created was imported in Blender, where it was adapted, modeled, and sculpted on the 3D skull and its soft tissue markers, using an American open-source application of the technique in the digital environment. The face created in a virtual environment was recognized and legal identification procedures were started, resulting in the more agile delivery of the disappeared body to its next of kin. It is therefore concluded that facial approximation may not be a primary method of human identification, but it can be satisfactorily applied in the forensic field as an individual recognition resource. It has great value in narrowing the search, reducing the number of alleged victims, and leading to identification tests, therefore significantly reducing the number of genetic DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) tests-which are considered costly for the State or Federation-and consequently reducing the waiting time before delivery of the body to its family.

Introdução: Embora as informações corretas sobre o tratamento ortodôntico sejam direito do paciente pelo Código de Defesa do Consumidor (CDC), o consumidor é geralmente considerado hipossuficiente à vista desta legislação, ou seja, não possui os conhecimentos técnicos e científicos que o permitam julgar o significado do risco e consequências do abandono do tratamento proposto, além da possibilidade de repercussões para o profissional, em âmbito ético junto ao Conselho de Classe. Objetivo: Este trabalho objetiva relatar um caso de abandono do tratamento ortodôntico e suas implicações éticas e legais para os envolvidos. Relato de caso: Paciente, do sexo feminino, 19 anos, relatou que abandonou, há doze meses, o tratamento ortodôntico que realizava em uma clínica prestadora de serviço de um plano de saúde odontológico porque não gostou da troca de profissionais e auxiliares, alguns destes em formação. Buscou a remoção do aparelho ortodôntico e tratamento para dores faciais na região da ATM esquerda. Considerações finais: No relato apresentado, a falta de motivação e a troca de profissionais durante o tratamento ortodôntico foram as principais razões para o abandono. Com isso, evidenciou-se a importância, do ponto de vista legal, da documentação odontológica para eventual prova em juízo dos profissionais envolvidos, além dos aspectos éticos que podem ser considerados, como, por exemplo, deixar de esclarecer adequadamente os propósitos e riscos do tratamento ortodôntico, bem como as consequências do seu abandono.

Introdução: A COVID-19 é uma enfermidade respiratória causada pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2, detectado pela primeira vez em Wuhan - China em dezembro de 2019. Atualmente, está bem definido que esse vírus possui alta e sustentada transmissibilidade entre as pessoas. Em decorrência do aumento da infecção humana pelo novo coronavírus e com o eminente risco de contágio e propagação da doença, iniciaram-se as medidas de prevenção e controle de infecção através da publicação de dispositivos legais com o objetivo de orientar os serviços de saúde e conter a disseminação do vírus. Sabe-se que a assistência odontológica apresenta alto risco para a disseminação do coronavírus e, por esse motivo, tornou-se de suma importância que os profissionais que atuam nos serviços de saúde estejam munidos de informaçõespara evitar ou reduzir ao máximo a transmissão de microrganismos durante qualquer assistência realizada. Objetivo: Apontar, por meio de uma revisão de literatura, a evolução das normativas éticas e legais relacionadas ao exercício da odontologia frente à pandemia da COVID-19 no Brasil. Revisão Da Literatura: Foram verificados dispositivos legais publicados durante o período de pandemia com repercussão sobre a Odontologia nas esferas nacional, com ênfase para questões sanitárias e de fiscalização do exercício profissional, além de uma orientação associativa. Conclusão: As normativas publicadas até a presente data, que se relacionam ao exercício profissional, destacam a importância deos cirurgiões-dentistas manterem-se atualizados sobre estes aspectos para o exercício profissional, ressaltando, ainda, que novas orientações e atualizações podem ser feitas sobre esta pandemia.

Prediction facial features from the skull are recurring theme on the forensic literature. The nose has been investigated since it has a significant role in facial recognition and the literature shows that there is not an universal method for nasal prediction. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review to analyze what are the most consistent techniques of nasal reconstruction. Primary studies describing or validating nasal reconstruction techniques in adults and published in journals of Forensic Sciences were included in this review. Tedeschi-Oliveira's method positioned nasal tip with acceptable accuracy as Gerasimov's method. The Krogman's and Iscan's technique underestimated nasal projection in North Americans. The Prokopec's and Ubelaker's method obtained accuracy in Caucasoid. George's method presented results similar to reference standard in Caucasoid. In a supplementary way, studies are needed to accurately estimate the nasal width.

Forensic facial approximation is an auxiliary method for human identification and allows facial recognition. The midface, that includes the nose, is vital for the recognition of a familiar face. The purpose of this study was to set hard tissue parameters to estimate nasal width, to test the method to estimate nasal width of Brazilians, and to analyze the relationship between nasal profile and facial type. A total of 246 computed tomography scans (183 females and 63 males) of adults were analyzed in Horos. Bone tissue measurements and facial type classification were performed on the skull scan. Nasal profile morphology was accessed through the tool 3D surface rendering. There was a difference around 3 mm from real to predicted nose through the method to estimate nasal width in Brazilians. So, the method may be used in forensic practice. Straight nose was associated with long face type.

A técnica de reconstrução facial forense é uma importante ferramenta que auxilia no processo de identificação humana. As técnicas são aplicadas com a finalidade de reconhecimento e posterior identificação, diante de condições em que não existe uma identidade atribuível ao esqueleto submetido ao exame forense. Foram obtidos os dados médios das espessuras de tecidos moles das faces de 47 crianças da faixa etária compreendida entre 6 e 10 anos de idade e comparados de modo linear com os dados obtidos por Beaini (2013) para adultos, utilizando a mesma metodologia para obtenção dos dados, e verificando se há diferenças significativas em relação às espessuras de tecidos moles entre crianças e adultos. O método envolveu a análise padronizada de bancos de dados de exames complementares de Tomografias Computadorizadas Cone-Beam de um centro radiológico brasileiro. Como resultados, a metodologia desenvolvida por Beaini (2013) para adultos mostrou-se adequada para ser empregada em exames de Tomografias Cone-Beam de crianças. Foi possível ainda aplicar uma modificação do protocolo de Beaini (2013), viabilizando a aplicação do método em crianças com a mensuração dos pontos Supra e Infra M2 Decíduos, proposta e desenvolvido nesta pesquisa. Recomenda-se utilizar como referência de espessuras de tecidos moles faciais o segundo molar decíduo, tanto superior como inferior para reconstruções faciais forenses em crianças com idade compreendida entre 6 e 10 anos. The forensic facial reconstruction technic is currently characterized as an important tool that assists in the process of human identification, guided by scientific knowledge. The techniques are applied with the main purpose of recognition and later identification, in conditions where there is no identity attributable to the skeleton undergoing the forensic examination. The mean soft tissue thickness data of the faces of children aged 6 to 10 years were obtained using the same methodology developed from Beaini (2013) for adults and compared in a linear fashion with these data, in order to determine whether or not there are significant differences in soft tissue thicknesses between children and adults. The method involved the standardized database analysis of Cone-Beam CT scans from a Brazilian radiological center, with the active application of the cited methodology. As results, in fact the applicability of the same methodology developed by Beaini (2013) for adults proved feasible to be used in children\'s exams. Since it was possible to evolve with the measurement of the superior and inferior M2 deciduous points, with the modification of the Beaini\'s protocol (2013), proposed and developed in this research successfully, it is recommended to use this reference of facial soft tissue thicknesses using the deciduous second molar, both superior and inferior, for forensic facial reconstructions in children aged 6 to 10 years.

Esta tese é composta por três capítulos. O primeiro capítulo teve por objetivo analisar quais as técnicas de reconstrução nasal mais consistentes em contexto forense através de uma revisão sistemática da literatura. No total, existem 15 métodos de reconstrução nasal descritos na literatura. Para localizar a ponta do nariz e estimar a projeção nasal em indivíduos brasileiros, o método que se demonstrou, em meta-análise, o mais apropriado foi o que considera que o ângulo (ponto Pronasale) formado pelas retas que partem dos pontos Rhinion e Prosthion possui valor aproximado de 90º. O capítulo II teve como propósito testar, mediante análise de imagens tomográficas, o método desenvolvido em indivíduos brasileiros para estimar a localização da ponta do nariz em casos de reconstrução facial forense. De acordo com a técnica, o ângulo (ponta do nariz) formado pela união de retas traçadas a partir dos pontos Rhinion e Prosthion corresponde a 90º. O programa Horos® foi utilizado para analisar as imagens dos exames de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico. Os critérios de seleção da amostra foram semelhantes aos utilizados no trabalho que propõe o método, assim como as análises realizadas. Os resultados mostraram que o ângulo de interesse correspondeu em média a 96.5º. Esta diferença resultou em uma inacurácia de aproximadamente 3 mm da localização estimada da ponta do nariz em relação à sua localização real. Em termos práticos, esta diferença não impede o reconhecimento facial. O terceiro capítulo teve o propósito de testar o método proposto para estimar a largura nasal de indivíduos brasileiros em reconstrução facial forense, além de determinar parâmetros em tecido duro para estimar a largura nasal e verificar relações entre o tipo facial e a morfologia do perfil nasal. A amostra foi composta por 246 imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (feminino: 183; masculino: 63). O programa Horos® foi utilizado. As análises em tecido duro foram realizadas na visualização de reconstrução multiplanar com projeção de máxima intensidade igual a zero, e a análise do perfil nasal foi realizada em tecido mole na ferramenta de visualização de superfícies. Os resultados mostram que o método proposto para estimar a largura nasal em brasileiros apresentou uma inacurácia de aproximadamente 1 mm, fato que não interfere no reconhecimento facial. Não houve relação de proporção direta entre a largura do nariz e a abertura piriforme, nem entre a largura do nariz e a distância intercanina, mesmo quando foram consideradas variáveis como sexo, idade e tipo facial. O biótipo facial longo apresentou relação moderada com o perfil nasal reto (r=0.037). This thesis contains three chapters. The first chapter aimed to conduct a systematic review to analyze what are the most consistent techniques of nasal reconstruction in a forensic context. There are fifteen nasal reconstruction methods described in the literature. To predict the Pronasale point and the nasal projection, the method that considers that the confluence between the lines traced from Rhinion and from Prosthion is an angle (Pronasale point) with a value of 90º presented good results when meta-analysis was performed. The aim of the second chapter was to test, trough CT images, the method developed on a sample of Brazilian subjects to predict the Pronasale point in forensic facial reconstruction. According to this technique, the union of the Rhinion and the Prosthion lines creates an 90º angle (Pronasale point). The software Horos® was used in order to perform the analysis on the cone-beam tomography images. The inclusion criteria of the sample were the same used by the primary study as well as the performed analysis. The results showed a mean value of 96.5º from the projection Pronasale and Rhinion. This difference results in an inaccuracy of approximate 3 mm of the Pronasale point and it is not impeditive for facial recognition of a familiar face. The third chapter aimed to test the method proposed to predict nasal length in Brazilian subjects, to determine hard tissue parameters to predict nasal length and to observe if there was any relation between facial pattern and nasal profile. The sample was composed by 246 cone beam computed tomography (183 female, 63 male). The software Horos® was used. The hard tissue analysis were performed on 3D multiplanar reconstruction with maximum intensity projection equal to zero, and the 3D surface rendering was used to verify the nasal profile in soft tissue. The proposed method to predict nasal length presented an inaccuracy of approximate 1 mm and it certainly does not influence facial recognition of familiar faces. There was no relation between nor nasal length and piriform aperture nor nasal length and intercanine distance even when sex, age and facial type were considered. The long facial type showed moderate relation with strength nasal profile (r=0.037).

Este estudo avaliou a rugosidade superficial e a resistência ao desgaste de dentes artificiais de resina acrílica submetidos ao ensaio de atrição. Foram selecionados 10 incisivos centrais superiores e 10 incisivos centrais inferiores de cada marca comercial: Biotone (Dentsply), Trilux (Vipi) e Soluut PX (Kota). As amostras foram submetidas à aferição da rugosidade superficial em rugosímetro (Mitutoyo SJ-201), com velocidade de 0,5 mm/s, por 30 segundos e comprimento de leitura de 0,25 mm; e à mensuração da altura cérvico-incisal utilizando paquímetro digital (MitutoyoDigimaticCaliper); assim como à aferição da massa de cada par de amostras (incisivo superior e inferior) em balança de precisão (Shimadzu AUW220D), antes e após o ensaio. Foi utilizada máquina de escovação mecânica, simulando movimento de atrição entre a superfície vestibular do incisivo superior e a incisal do incisivo inferior. As amostras foram submetidas a 40.000 ciclos, imersas em água destilada. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante com relação à rugosidade superficial antes e após o ensaio de atrição. Todas as marcas comerciais estudadas apresentaram redução significativa na altura cérvico-incisal, mas não apresentaram redução de suas massas, exceto Soluut PX. Também constatou-se que não houve diferença nos valores de rugosidade entre as marcas comerciais.

During forensic facial reconstruction, facial features may be predicted based on the parameters of the skull. This study evaluated the relationships between alar cartilage and piriform aperture and nose morphology and facial typology. Ninety-six cone beam computed tomography images of Brazilian subjects (49 males and 47 females) were used in this study. OsiriX software was used to perform the following measurements: nasal width, distance between alar base insertion points, lower width of the piriform aperture, and upper width of the piriform aperture. Nasal width was associated with the lower width of the piriform aperture, sex, skeletal vertical pattern of the face, and age. The current study contributes to the improvement of forensic facial guides by identifying the relationships between the alar cartilages and characteristics of the biological profile of members of a population that has been little studied thus far.

Amid so many FSTT data, Forensic artists have to make a subjective choice of a dataset that best meets their needs. This study investigated the performance of four FSTT datasets in the recognition and resemblance of Brazilian living individuals and the performance of assessors in recognizing people, according to sex and knowledge on Human Anatomy and Forensic Dentistry. Sixteen manual facial approximations (FAs) were constructed using three-dimensional (3D) prototypes of skulls (targets). The American method was chosen for the construction of the faces. One hundred and twenty participants evaluated all FAs by means of recognition and resemblance tests. This study showed higher proportions of recognition by FAs conducted with FSTT data from cadavers compared with those conducted with medical imaging data. Targets were also considered more similar to FAs conducted with FSTT data from cadavers. Nose and face shape, respectively, were considered the most similar regions to targets. The sex of assessors (male and female) and the knowledge on Human Anatomy and Forensic Dentistry did not play a determinant role to reach greater recognition rates. It was possible to conclude that FSTT data obtained from imaging may not facilitate recognition and establish acceptable level of resemblance. Grouping FSTT data by regions of the face, as proposed in this paper, may contribute to more accurate FAs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved. This study verified the difference between two methods of forensic facial approximation (FFA) regarding recognition and resemblance rates. Three-dimensional models of skulls were obtained from computerized tomography (CT) scans of two subjects (targets). Two manual FFAs were performed for each target, by applying two different guidelines for the facial structures (what we called "American method" (AM) and "Combined method" (CM)). Unfamiliar assessors evaluated the sculptures by recognition and resemblance tests. The AM was that which allowed more correct responses of recognition and higher resemblance's scores for the male target (p < 0.001). Regarding guidelines for modeling characteristics of the face, the ones that are practical and easily performed for sculptures, such as the length of the anterior nasal spine multiplied by 3 for nose prediction, may offer better results in terms of resemblance.

Este trabalho teve o propósito de avaliar a relação entre a cartilagem alar e a abertura piriforme a partir de imagens de tomografia computadorizada cone-beam e a relação do nariz com o padrão esquelético vertical da face. A pesquisa foi realizada com 96 imagens de indivíduos de ambos os sexos (49 masculino e 47 feminino), com idades entre 18 e 65 anos classificados de acordo com sua tipologia facial. Para a realização das marcações e mensurações de interesse foi utilizado o software OsiriX. A tipologia facial foi acessada através de três metodologias: índice facial, ângulo goníaco e proporção entre as alturas faciais. No corte axial da imagem de tomografia computadorizada, foram aferidas quatro grandezas lineares: largura do nariz externo, distância entre as inserções alares, extensão da base da abertura piriforme e máxima largura da abertura piriforme. Todas as grandezas foram mensuradas por dois examinadores em concordância. A análise dos resultados obtidos mostrou que há correlação entre as larguras do nariz externo e da abertura piriforme e entre a base da cavidade nasal e a distância entre as inserções alares. A largura da abertura piriforme aumenta proporcionalmente mais que a do nariz. Além disso, a tipologia facial longa associa-se à largura nasal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the alar cartilage and the pyriform aperture using cone-beam computed tomography (CT) imaging, and the relationship between the morphology of the nose and the vertical skeletal pattern of the face. 96 images of subjects (49 male and 47 female), aged 18-65 years classified according to the vertical skeletal pattern of the face were used in this study. The OsiriX software was used to measure the structures of interest. The facial pattern was obtained according to three techniques: facial index, gonial angle, and facial proportions. From an axial section of the CT imaging, four measurements were performed: nasal width, distance between the alar insertions, extension of the base of the pyriform aperture and width of the pyriform aperture. All measurements were obtained by two calibrated examiners. There is correlation between the nasal width and the breadth of the pyriform aperture, and between the base of the nasal cavity and the distance between the alar insertions. The width of the pyriform aperture proportionally increases more than the nasal breadth. Furthermore, the long face type is associated with nasal width.

Palatal rugae patterns are anatomic structures considered unique to each person. Monozygotic twins present similarities, however, Rugoscopy in particular, may contribute to their individualization for forensic purposes. The aims of this study were: to study the palatal rugae classifications of Brinon; to propose improvements to facilitate use of this method, if pertinent; and to characterize palatal rugae in a sample of Brazilian monozygotic twins and singletons. Precise reproducibility of the two methods of Brinon, from 1982 and 2011, was prevented by poor intra-examiner agreement (70% and 13% respectively). Our proposed improvements to these methods, although preliminary, were associated with better results. The most common palatal rugae patterns were types A, M, and Q. Palatal rugae were confirmed to be unique to each individual, even in monozygotic twins. Furthermore, twins did not exhibit any special patterns that might facilitate their differentiation from singletons.
