Patient value in hospital care has become increasingly important over the last decade. This paper argues that patient value could be ameliorated by investing in patient agility. Patient agility constitutes the capabilities that enable hospitals to sense the health service needs of their patients and respond to the changing health service demands of these patients. This paper further posits that hospitals’ current sensing and responding capabilities are inherently reactive as they detect, act upon and pursue occurrences and patterns in the needs and demands of patients after these have already manifested themselves. Hence, we assert that this reactive nature thwarts hospitals in preventing negative trends or capitalizing on positive trends necessitating a shift to sensing and responding capabilities that are more predictive. We postulate that this necessary organizational shift can be facilitated by implementing and utilizing the power of predictive analytics and that this particular issue has not yet been adequately addressed by existing scientific literature. Based on this argument, an initial research proposal is established centering around the role of predictive analytics in fostering patient agility and patient value in hospitals. The initial research proposal sets out to examine this topic in an inclusive, integrated and comprehensive manner as it outlines a coherent conceptual model, incorporates a multi-stakeholder perspective and integrates biomedical as well as health service needs and demands. The initial proposal is meant to serve as a conceptual framework for future research as well as an initial point of departure for further refinement, improvement, elaboration, and discussion.

Aim: Blockchain technology (BCT) is a relatively new technological development, promising strong gains in the areas of product traceability and visibility, end-to-end coordination (E2E), governance, and efficiency of supply chains. The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of the impact of BCT on these performance measures. Design / Research methods: Hypotheses were tested with survey data from 119 supply chain professionals from Northern American SMEs. Conclusions / findings: The results confirm the positive impacts of BCT on all performance measures. E2E coordination is the integration of information, goods, and money within an organisation or supply chain. E2E coordination appeared to benefit from the use of BCT, enabling information sharing in a safe way. The findings suggest that BCT use fosters E2E coordination, which in its turn also positively affects financial performance. Originality / value of the article: Despite the increasing interest in and use of, BCT, there is little empirical evidence for the effect on supply chain performance. Many studies are anecdotal and lack empirical evidence. Implications of the research (if applicable): Companies should acknowledge the impact of BCT use on the various supply chain performance measures. Implementing and using BCT is likely to foster improvement in a wide range of performance indicators. Limitations of the research (if applicable): Companies use different types, versions, varieties, and forks of blockchain, all having their own strong and weak points. Future studies could investigate and include the nuances within different forks of BCT.

Attribute-based encryption (ABE) cryptographically implements fine-grained access control on data. As such, data can be stored by an entity that is not necessarily trusted to enforce access control, or an entity that is not even trusted to have access to the plaintext data at all. Instead, access control can be externally enforced by a trusted entity. Additionally, some multi-authority variants of ABE—which do not have a central authority—can effectively and securely implement access control in multiple-domain settings. Furthermore, ABE is the only cryptographic approach to fine-grained access control that does not require an online trusted third party during access requests, and thus provides better availability properties. The actual realization of these theoretical advantages in practice depends on whether current state-of-the-art ABE schemes support the necessary core properties. Much progress has been made in the last two decades in pairing-based ABE schemes, owing to their versatility and efficiency. In fact, it is possible to support most core properties under strong security guarantees, while incurring acceptable storage and computational costs. It is therefore a good time to ask ourselves whether pairing-based ABE has reached its full practical potential. To answer this question, we provide a comprehensive systematized overview of various existing pairing-based ABE schemes and their core properties. We also investigate the relationship between these core properties and real-world access control requirements. We show that a few challenges remain, that must be overcome for ABE to reach its full potential as a mechanism to implement efficient and secure access control in practice.

IT project portfolio management has been implemented in most organizations to effectively manage and balance complex portfolios of IT projects with business strategy. Portfolio risks can affect the success of a portfolio and the achievement of its strategic intentions. While recent literature identifies potential risks in sub-areas of ITPPM, a validated comprehensive list of risk factors and an understanding of why these factors are perceived as risks by practitioners is lacking. Therefore, this study designs and then validates a reference set of risks based on practitioners’ experiences with these risks. Our validated reference set of risk factors can be used by organizations to more confidently assess the risks of their IT project portfolio.

During the last decade, the public healthcare sector has had to deal with increased competition, a growing influence of patient associations, and a necessity to deliver health services more efficiently and effectively. Despite recognising the patient participant’s role as a critical stakeholder in value creation, there is a limited body of research on the influence and power of patient participants. This article focuses on regional health improvement collaboratives that aim to develop coordinated, multi-stakeholder solutions to their healthcare cost and quality problems. They meet regularly and include health professionals, health insurance providers, and patient participants. In this article, we explore the relationships between these stakeholders and patient participants’ interpersonal dimensions regarding empowerment and valuable collaboration. Data were collected through stakeholder observations during meetings of three regional health improvement collaboratives, as well as through semi-structured interviews with the patient participants involved in these cases. Results show that patient participants can be empowered on a personal level. However, this does not imply that patient participants are empowered within the group dynamics. Interpersonal relationships constitute a crucial hidden aspect of building trust. More dialogue and inquiry are needed to examine how patient engagement is enacted and positioned within healthcare collaboratives.

The current research investigates the interplay of board gender diversity (BGD), the quality of corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD), and the green innovation performance (GIP) of a firm. It examines the moderation effect of the CSRD on the relationship between corporate GIP and BGD. The study inculcates 3,736 firm-year observations of A-share listed Chinese firms from 2010 to 2019. Least square dummy variables method, generalized method of moments, and 2SLS are employed for the analysis of the study. The findings foster an affirmative and significant impact of BGD on corporate GIP in terms of green innovation patents. Moreover, the quality of CSRD is also detected for a significant moderating effect on the relationship between BGD and corporate GIP. The quality of CSRD emerges to be an indicator for social resilience and female role congruence under the purview of the social resilience theory and the role congruence theory, respectively. This research would help managers and policymakers of developing nations in formulating environmental innovation strategies for corporate sustainability.

This study contributes to the inconclusive literature on the relationship between board gender diversity (BGD) and green innovation (GI). It empirically examines the moderating role of normative, mimetic and coercive pressures in the relationship between BGD and GI, derived from an industry-specific isomorphic exhibition of institutional theory. Appertaining to A-share listed firms of China, the findings highlight the moderating effect of masculinity, environmental sensitivity, environmental regulation level and export orientation of an industry on the said relationship. Moreover, the coercive isomorphism exhibits pronounced impact with the intensity of export orientation. However, firms associated with high-tech industries have not been confirmed for significant effect on the relationship. Thus, the findings imply that the dynamics of the corporate governance and institutional isomorphism in case of BGD and GI relationships, in the organisational field of industry, are likely both pertinent and prevalent. Moreover, the increase in the number of females on the corporate boards could enhance the green performance of a firm, subject to the fulfilment of industry specific boundary conditions, predefined by the unique set of industry specific institutional pressures. These pressures amid affiliation with a specific industry should be evaluated and controlled for, on the bases of coercive, normative, and mimetic isomorphism it hatches, to device an optimum composition of the corporate board.

This study aims to increase our understanding of how family firms, acting as ecosystem orchestrators, mitigate perceived relational and performance risk in ecosystems via the use of governance mechanisms. We use the ecosystem governance literature to understand whether family firms' characteristics lead to a unique governance approach in an ecosystem setting. Our findings and theoretical implications are threefold; (1) formal and informal governance mechanisms act as complements to mitigate relational and performance risks; (2) the choice of governance mechanisms differs for relational and performance risk; (3) changes in perceived risk over time result in shifts in the relative dominance of formal/informal governance mechanisms. Plain English Summary This study analyzes how family firms, acting as ecosystem orchestrators, mitigate perceived relational and performance risk via the use of governance mechanisms. Using data from a Belgian family firm that initiated an ecosystem in healthcare, the study shows that in a family firm-led ecosystem, formal and informal governance mechanisms act as complements to deal with relational and performance risk. We show that to deal with relational/performance risk, different combinations of governance mechanisms should be used. When ecosystem members perceive changes over time in perceived risk, the ecosystem orchestrator should change the balance between formal/informal governance mechanisms. Our study suggests that family firm orchestrators benefit from stimulating the active participation of ecosystem members. Family firm orchestrators might want to consider changing needs of a growing ecosystem, as, in larger ecosystems, frequent communication between the orchestrator and members can be more difficult. We argue that family firm orchestrators should remain mindful of the balance between formal and informal governance mechanisms.

Ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption is a versatile primitive that has been considered extensively to securely manage data in practice. Especially completely unbounded schemes are attractive, because they do not restrict the sets of attributes and policies. So far, any such schemes that support negations in the access policy or that have online/offline extensions have an inefficient decryption algorithm.In this work, we propose GLUE (Generalized, Large-universe, Unbounded and Expressive), which is a novel scheme that allows for the efficient implementation of the decryption while allowing the support of both negations and online/offline extensions. We achieve these properties simultaneously by uncovering an underlying dependency between encryption and decryption, which allows for a flexible trade-off in their efficiency. For the security proof, we devise a new technique that enables us to generalize multiple existing schemes. As a result, we obtain a completely unbounded scheme supporting negations that, to the best of our knowledge, outperforms all existing such schemes in the decryption algorithm.

IT Project Portfolio Management has been implemented in most organizations to effectively manage complex portfolios of IT projects and balance them with business strategy. Several standards for portfolio management have been published, but the scientific literature still lacks a theoretically grounded and practically validated reference model for analyzing the implementation of IT Project Portfolio Management in an organization. Therefore, this study designs and validates a reference model for systematically analyzing IT Project Portfolio Management design choices in an organization in terms of processes, roles, responsibilities, and authority. Organizations can use the reference model to systematically assess their local implementation of IT Project Portfolio Management and identify areas for improvement.

PurposeDuring choir rehearsals, a conductor continuously holds choir members accountable for what they do and how they sing. Hence, members are held accountable through action. This allows a conductor to emphasize his/her expertise and underline his/her authority. Choir members typically respond in certain ways when this is done, for instance by commenting on the feedback they receive or by trying to improve their singing. The interplay between these accounts, how they develop over time, and what they (do not) accomplish in terms of human relatedness are the focus of this study. We use Bauman's (1993) conceptualization of social space to investigate these issues.Design/methodology/approachBy providing reasons for their conduct and behaving in a certain way, a conductor and choir members, but also a choir's management, can alter their position in social space. Thereby, they solidify or change how they relate to other individuals in the choir. Bauman assumes that processes of social spacing require so-called “misunderstandings”. We examine seven misunderstandings that occurred in a particular rehearsal of a top-level amateur choir, analyzing their impact on human relatedness. Video analysis methods, interviews and photo-elicitation are the main research methods used.FindingsWe find both short-term and long-term effects of misunderstandings on human relatedness, and offer two extensions of Bauman's (1993) conception of social space. Firstly, we assert that there is a reflective side to processes of social spacing that needs to be taken into account when changes in human relatedness are discussed. Secondly, we find that the emotional impact of accountability on how individuals behave ought not to be underestimated, as this can have lasting effects on how people relate to one another.Originality/valueThis research makes two contributions to the extant literature. It is shown how accountability through action unfolds when people engage in leisurely activity, and how this affects the way they relate to one another – in sometimes unintentional and unpredictable ways. It also extends a well-known theoretical framework on social space that has seen little application in the accounting literature. This framework is adapted so that it may be used more fruitfully in future accounting studies.

Although IT sourcing strategic partnerships provide various advantages to the co-operating partners, realising these advantages is not self-evident. The high level of uncertainty of an IT context and their long duration make them vulnerable to a premature ending. Neglecting the possibility of such an ending may confront the partners of an IT strategic partnership with high negative consequences. Therefore, it is surprising that partnership ending and the governance of partnership ending have received relatively little attention in the existing literature. Around the beginning of the new millennium a small stream on this topic, in which Tähtinen plays a prominent role, has emerged. However, the discussions in this stream are very much at a conceptual level and seem to have stopped without a conclusive ending. Arguably, it is too difficult to develop a conclusive theoretical framework up-front matching all kinds of practical observations. Therefore, we plea for a more empirically grounded local approach. In such an approach, for a specific partnership, the signals which revealed a possible ending will be collected through a set of interviews with interviewees involved in the specific partnership. By combining these signals a more complete and pluriform picture of the ending of a specific partnership can be acquired. If such an exercise for sufficient IT sourcing strategic partnerships’ endings will be done, hopefully science will be in a better position to generate generic theories from these gathered local theories. At the time of the writing we are conducting first experiments with several IT sourcing strategic partnerships which recently faced or are facing a premature ending. We hope to report our progress on a future conference event soon.

Gamification relates to the application of game elements in a non-game context. Recently, the concept receives increasing acknowledgement as a tool for achieving motivational or behavioural goals. The effects of gamification in education, on an individual level, have been the topic of academic research for some time. However, until now, only few academic studies have addressed the implementation of gamification in teams in organizational contexts. Using Q methodology, this study combines quantitative and qualitative data to explore how team members experience gamification in work teams. The results show two main perspectives on gamification in organizational work teams. The first perspective, described as the eager team gamer, is predominantly positive. It reveals an experience of increased enjoyment, collaboration, creativity, and productiveness among team members. The second perspective, labelled as the critical player, is much more demanding. It acknowledges the potential positive influences of gamification in certain contexts, but feels strongly about possible inappropriateness in serious tasks or environments, and is adverse towards competitive elements. The results of this Q study add to our understanding of how and why team members in organizations may variously perceive gamification of team tasks.

The increasing generation of data has inspired many organizations to explore data using data analytics. Initially, mainly large organizations showed a keen interest, but more recently also small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) picked up on this trend. However, the use of data analytics to improve performance has several challenges for SMEs. For example, SMEs have fewer financial resources and knowledgeable staff who are familiar with data analytics. As SMEs play a significant role in the economy it is crucial that these disadvantages are mitigated. Still, many research gaps exist concerning the use of data analytics in SMEs. One of these gaps is the role of data analytics maturity on organizational performance. And more specifically, what dimensions should mature or what type of benefits are achieved by mature use of data analytics. Therefore, this study aims to measure SME's data analytics maturity through a maturity model and show if mature use of data analytics within SMEs is related with a positive impact on organizational performance. The study findings indicate that higher data analytics maturity is related to a positive impact on the organizational performance of SMEs. Specifically, the contribution of mature use of data analytics to SME performance is substantial after the awareness stage. Furthermore, the results suggest that the benefits for mature use of data analytics mainly stimulate the successful introduction of new products and services rather than other aspects of organizational performance.

To get value from an IT project portfolio now and in the future, it is important to periodically assess the so-called health of the portfolio. If organizations attempt to assess the health of their portfolio, many do not use a proven set of assessment criteria. Moreover, recent literature lacks an overview of assessment criteria that have been validated in real life conditions. Therefore, this article attempts to provide a validated reference set of assessment criteria. In this study, first an initial list of potential assessment criteria was established based on literature. Secondly, the usefulness of these potential assessment criteria were validated in five case organizations. In this multiple case study, interviews were conducted with practitioners in the field of IT Project Portfolio Management to learn about their practical experience with the assessment criteria. During the in-depth interviews, experts were asked to assess the usefulness of the assessment criteria for monitoring the health of their IT Project Portfolio. We propose that this reference set can be used by organizations to assess the health of their IT Project Portfolio in a more confident manner.

Purpose Organizations are increasingly joining inter-organizational networks to foster sustainable employability for their employees. The purpose of this study is to examine how these inter-organizational networks function and to identify the factors that foster or hinder the benefits of network membership. Design/ methods/ approach A qualitative approach was adopted, using four focus groups with network coordinators (N = 18) and HR professionals (N = 14), complemented with available written documentation. In total, 14 Dutch inter-organizational networks were represented. Respondents were recruited through purposive and snowballing sampling techniques. Thematic analysis was applied.Findings The results outline the goals, benefits for organizations and employees, as well as contextual factors and drivers that were mentioned by respondents and reasons for starting up inter-organizational networks. Furthermore, shared obstacles and interests, reciprocity, trust, active involvement and commitment, communication, membership fee, virtual connections, and network size were identified as key factors for sustaining the collaborative efforts of network actors.Originality/ value This study provides insights into how a new type of inter-organizational network functions and the specific factors and dynamics that influence its success. Additionally, it illustrates the processes of fostering sustainable employability beyond organizational boundaries and existing HRM practices. Emmerson et al.’s (2011) collaborative governance model is used as a theoretical lens. The results of this research create a refined model that captures the specificity of this new way of inter-organizational collaboration.

Ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) has attracted much interest from the practical community to enforce access control in distributed settings such as the Internet of Things (IoT). In such settings, encryption devices are often constrained, having small memories and little computational power, and the associated networks are lossy. To optimize both the ciphertext sizes and the encryption speed is therefore paramount. In addition, the master public key needs to be small enough to fit in the encryption device’s memory. At the same time, the scheme needs to be expressive enough to support common access control models. Currently, however, the state of the art incurs undesirable efficiency trade-offs. Existing schemes often have linear ciphertexts, and consequently, the ciphertexts may be too large and encryption may be too slow. In contrast, schemes with small ciphertexts have extremely large master public keys, and are generally computationally inefficient.In this work, we propose TinyABE: a novel CP-ABE scheme that is expressive and can be configured to be efficient enough for settings with embedded devices and low-quality networks. In particular, we demonstrate that our scheme can be configured such that the ciphertexts are small, encryption is fast and the master public key is small enough to fit in memory. From a theoretical standpoint, the new scheme and its security proof are non-trivial generalizations of the expressive scheme with constant-size ciphertexts by Agrawal and Chase (TCC’16, Eurocrypt’17) and its proof to the unbounded setting. By using techniques of Rouselakis and Waters (CCS’13), we remove the restrictions that the Agrawal-Chase scheme imposes on the keys and ciphertexts, making it thus more flexible. In this way, TinyABE is especially suitable for IoT devices and networks.

Team flow is a positive team state that may augment team performance and well-being of team members. Although gaining momentum, the topic of collective flow in a work team context is still largely unexplored and little is known about what factors foster it. In addition, research into this topic has so far been conducted predominantly outside real-life organizational work settings. In the study reported on in this paper, 386 respondents from 60 teams in four public organizations in different domains were included in a survey study. Results of a multilevel analysis showed that, at the between-group level and the within-group level, team goal commitment was positively associated with team flow, and collective efficacy beliefs served as a mediator in the relationship between team goal commitment and work team flow. Moreover, at the within-group level, support was found for a positive, mediated association of team proximity with team flow and for a moderating role of collective challenge-skills balance. Conclusions from this study provide more insights into the complex mechanisms involved in establishing collective flow within a work team context, with implications for both researchers and managers.

Escalation of commitment causes people to continue a failing course of action. We study the role of construal level in such escalation of commitment. Consistent with the widely held view of construal level as a primed effect, we employed a commonly used prime for manipulating this construct in a laboratory experiment. Our findings revealed that the prime failed to produce statistically significant differences in construal level, which was measured using the Behavior Identification Form (BIF). Furthermore, there was no effect of the prime on escalation of commitment, or on constructs that have previously been linked to construal level such as the perceived importance of feasibility considerations relative to desirability considerations, and the number of pros and cons that subjects can think of.Interestingly, however, subjects’ actual construal level scores on the BIF were found to significantly affect escalation. Specifically, our findings show that people with a low construal level are less willing to continue a failing project. This relation is mediated by the perceived importance of the feasibility of the project relative to its desirability. For people with a low construal level, the perceived importance of feasibility relative to desirability is higher, which in turn makes escalation of commitment less likely.Our findings are consistent with prior research suggesting that priming construal level may not always be effective. Thus, while construal level has typically been regarded as a state-like variable that can be primed, in this study, we show that construal level may also be considered as a trait.

Automatic speech emotion recognition (SER) may assist call center service employees in deciphering and regulating customer emotions. In order to contribute to a successful augmentation of service employees with AI, the main goal of this study is to identify effective machine learning approaches to classify discrete basic emotions in customer service conversations. A comparison is presented of the recognition performance of different neural network architectures on speech features extracted from service interactions in a naturalistic customer service setting. Baseline classifiers, including a zerorule classifier, a random classifier, a frequency classifier, and nonsequential multi-class classifiers are compared to different neural network architectures. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP), a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN), and a neural machine translation (NMT) outperform the baseline classifiers, suggesting a pattern in the data relating to emotion labels. While the neural machine translation model with attention attains the highest f1-score, no significant difference in performance among the neural networks is detected. Results therefore support the use of the the multi-label multi-layer perceptron as the simplest model.

Banking market integration is essential for a stable European Monetary Union but was severely disrupted during the Eurozone crisis. With heterogeneous national banking markets, interpreting the recent post-crisis convergence of national interest rates as restored integration has been challenged in the literature. We therefore scrutinize integration under the condition of market heterogeneity for 12 Eurozone countries before, during and after the Eurozone crisis from 2003 to 2019, employing a novel combination of state-of-the-art network analyses and estimates of bilateral interest rate linkages. We measure integration as bi-directional (Granger) causality relations between lending rates or margins in order to identify crisis-resilient arbitrage mechanisms. Their extent, disruption and restoration inform our subsequent network analysis, which unveils that the Eurozone crisis has fundamentally and persistently disrupted this network beyond the crisis period even when interest rates and margins are converging. Our approach complements and extends existing integration analyses by revealing policy-relevant but otherwise undetected disintegration.

This study investigated the relationship between executive turnover (ET) and quality of corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD) at the firm level. The role of political embeddedness (PE) in the association between ET and CSRD quality in Chinese listed A-share firms is also inspected. We employed 20,850 firm’s/year observations between 2010 and 2016. An inverse relationship was found between ET and CSRD quality as well as PE and CSRD quality. In addition, the study findings disclose that corporate PE moderates the relationship between ET and a firm’s CSRD quality whilst the impact of ET on a company's CSRD quality was found more pronounced for firms with a low level of corporate PE. This examination adds to the literature on CSRD quality under the premise of normative stakeholder theory and leads to the conclusion that the political link of departing executives is an active participant in the exacerbation of CSRD quality in PE firms of China. This implies a reinvigoration of the roles of decision-makers for sustainable CSR assurance.

This paper uncovers global ESG rating inflation that negates the societal impact of socially responsible investing under information asymmetries. Refinitiv, MSCI IVA, and FTSE ESG ratings are inversely related to sustainable performance because firms’ promises of sustainable performance improvements do not realize up to 15 years in the future. Consequently, socially responsible investors accidentally tilt their portfolios toward firms with high ESG ratings but low sustainable performance. We causally show that this provides cost of capital incentives for firms to inflate their ESG rating. Therefore, the portfolios of socially responsible investors are less sustainable than the market.

PurposeA vast body of literature has documented the negative consequences of stress on employee performance and well-being. These deleterious effects are particularly pronounced for service agents who need to constantly endure and manage customer emotions. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and describe a deep learning model to predict in real-time service agent stress from emotion patterns in voice-to-voice service interactions.Design/methodology/approachA deep learning model was developed to identify emotion patterns in call center interactions based on 363 recorded service interactions, subdivided in 27,889 manually expert-labeled three-second audio snippets. In a second step, the deep learning model was deployed in a call center for a period of one month to be further trained by the data collected from 40 service agents in another 4,672 service interactions.FindingsThe deep learning emotion classifier reached a balanced accuracy of 68% in predicting discrete emotions in service interactions. Integrating this model in a binary classification model, it was able to predict service agent stress with a balanced accuracy of 80%.Practical implicationsService managers can benefit from employing the deep learning model to continuously and unobtrusively monitor the stress level of their service agents with numerous practical applications, including real-time early warning systems for service agents, customized training and automatically linking stress to customer-related outcomes.Originality/valueThe present study is the first to document an artificial intelligence (AI)-based model that is able to identify emotions in natural (i.e. nonstaged) interactions. It is further a pioneer in developing a smart emotion-based stress measure for service agents. Finally, the study contributes to the literature on the role of emotions in service interactions and employee stress.

Samenvatting De overeenkomst tussen kenmerken van persoon en omgeving – ‘fit’ genoemd – is nodig opdat mensen zich goed voelen op het werk. In onderzoek worden deze kenmerken echter zelden ingevuld met theoretisch onderbouwde concepten. We komen tegemoet aan deze tekortkoming met concepten uit de construal-leveltheorie en zelf-determinatietheorie. In het eerste onderzoek (twee vignetstudies, N = 202) vonden we dat een sterkere fit bereikt wordt wanneer de medewerker die een grote (kleine) sociale en spatiele afstand ervaart ten opzichte van de leidinggevende, met abstracte (concrete) taal wordt aangesproken. In het tweede onderzoek (drie vignetstudies, N = 473) werd gevonden dat fit bij sollicitanten kan gezien worden als de overeenkomst tussen persoonlijke waarden en de waarden specifiek voor de organisatie, maar ook als de overeenkomst tussen persoonlijke waarden en de waarden typisch voor de sector. Organisatie-specifieke fit krijgt meer invloed naarmate sollicitanten een kleinere afstand ervaren ten opzichte van de organisatie; sectortypische fit krijgt dan minder invloed. In het laatste onderzoek (vragenlijststudie, N = 188) bekeken we fit als de overeenkomst tussen intrinsieke (extrinsieke) persoonlijke waarden en intrinsieke (extrinsieke) organisatiewaarden en toonden we aan dat sollicitanten zich vooral laten leiden door fit in extrinsieke waarden. Wetmatigheden uit beide theorieen worden toegepast om nieuwe inzichten in fit te ontdekken.

Innovative firms confront potential lenders with various risks, including possible innovation failure, uncertain R&D investment payoffs, cash flow volatility, and low collateral value of hard-to-value intangible assets. As a result, these firms might struggle to obtain financing. More readable financial disclosures could mitigate the informational risk around innovative firms' fundamentals, ease their monitoring by lenders, and thus ultimately reduce these firms' cost of debt. In this regard, we find that while all firms can overcome information uncertainty about their firm fundamentals and reduce their spreads by having more readable financial disclosures, there is an additional benefit in terms of readability further lowering the cost of debt for innovative firms. The additional benefit that innovative firms can achieve from having more readable financial disclosures, however, is limited to situations of more pronounced information asymmetry where there is no previous lending relationship.

Verifying security of advanced cryptographic primitives such as attribute-based encryption (ABE) is often difficult. In this work, we show how to break eleven schemes: two single-authority and nine multi-authority (MA) ABE schemes. Notably, we break DAC-MACS, a highly-cited multi-authority scheme, published at TIFS. This suggests that, indeed, verifying security of complex schemes is complicated, and may require simpler tools. The multi-authority attacks also illustrate that mistakes are made in transforming single-authority schemes into multi-authority ones. To simplify verifying security, we systematize our methods to a linear approach to analyzing generic security of ABE. Our approach is not only useful in analyzing existing schemes, but can also be applied during the design and reviewing of new schemes. As such, it can prevent the employment of insecure (MA-)ABE schemes in the future.

Several studies have advocated for the value of co-evolutionary approaches to business-IT alignment in healthcare settings because they would be better suited to deal with complexity. However, empirical evidence supporting this premise is scarce and mainly based on qualitative works. We address this research gap by performing a survey among 85 Dutch healthcare organizations, looking into the effects of co-evolutionary information systems alignment (COISA) on organizational performance and the role of dynamic capabilities in this value path. We combine Necessary Condition Analysis and Partial Least Squares Modeling to see which aspects are indispensable and help further develop dynamic capabilities and performance. Our results confirm that COISA indeed positively influences healthcare organizations' organizational performance through dynamic capabilities. Furthermore, we demonstrate that alignment motivation and interconnections between heterogeneous IS stakeholders are indispensable, and show the seemingly higher importance of the operational and orchestrational alignment competencies and the sensing dimension of dynamic capabilities.

In spatial planning, the influence of citizens on their living environment is an important and urgent topic. Citizens make their voices heard, solicited and unsolicited, for example by demonstrating against the housing shortage or by getting involved in the sometimes heated discussions about solar parks, wind turbines, nature conservation and agriculture. In the new Environment and Planning Act, participation is mentioned as an important pillar, but what exactly is the position of citizens in this law? Are the expectations, like in the earlier decentralization of healthcare, perhaps too high? And what risks are in the execution of the law? Time to consider how local governments can better safeguard participation.

Software Engineering and Computer Science (CS) programs often contain several mathematical courses or courses with large mathematics components or dependencies. Study success in those subjects can be influenced by students' attitudes towards mathematics and their perceptions about their own relation with mathematics. To gain insights into how the mathematics perceptions of computer science students affect their studies, we collected qualitative data from fourteen CS students from two universities in the context of an elective mathematics course. In this qualitative research, we used a triangulation strategy by collecting data from three different sources (interviews, questionnaires, and math-history assignments) to develop a comprehensive understanding of CS students' mathematics perceptions. The thematic analysis revealed the factors that affect students' perceptions about mathematics, including various types of prior experiences, their self-efficacy, math anxiety, and motivation sources. The analysis also highlighted that students find mathematics important for skill transfer to specific CS topics and for supporting continuous learning.

COVID-19 has a substantial and unexpected impact on individuals’ daily life around the world. Unprecedented public health restrictions such as lockdowns have the potential to affect multiple dimensions of individuals’ well-being, while the severity of such restrictions varies across countries. However, a holistic perspective comparing differences in and drivers of the different dimensions of well-being across countries differentially affected by COVID-19 is missing to date. We address this gap in the literature by examining the mental, social, functional, and financial well-being of 2,100 individuals across Australia, France, Germany, and South Africa by means of a survey administered during May of 2021. Supporting our holistic approach, we find that the different dimensions of well-being are correlated, with survey respondents from France reporting the lowest and those from Australia reporting the highest overall level of well-being. Respondents’ subjective and objective evaluations of their living conditions during lockdowns as well as positive health and financial behaviors are positively associated with their well-being during the pandemic.

This paper examines the effect of national culture on corporate risk-taking worldwide. Specifically, we focus on one particular cultural trait – Individualism – a culture dimension linked to risk-taking and overconfidence. Using a sample of 48 countries from 1998 to 2019 (a total of 111,697 firm-year observations), we document a positive relationship between Individualism and corporate risk-taking. This result is robust to potential endogeneity concerns, alternative default horizons, an alternative measure for corporate risk-taking, and alternative measures of Individualism.

Enterprises always do their business within some restrictions. In a team of enterprise architects, the restrictions are transformed into the modelling conventions and the corresponding modelling constraints that should be consistently applied across all enterprise models. This paper presents an approach for refining and formali\-zing modeling conventions into modelling constraints and using them for assessment of enterprise models by a software component called ArchiChecker. The specifics of the proposed approach is that the modeling conventions are first visualized and formalized using the types of elements and relationships of the ArchiMate modeling language, that is also used for modelling of enterprise views. The ArchiMate elements and relationships serve as types to formulate constraints. The elements and relationships in an ArchiMate model are instances of the ArchiMate elements and relationships. Using these types and instances the ArchiChecker automatically generates the lists of violations of modeling conventions in the enterprise models. Each violation shows how a specific enterprise view deviates from a given modeling convention. The paper reports a case study of application of the proposed approach to enterprise modelling views and modelling conventions used in a medical center. The case study is used to discuss the added value of formalization and automated assessment of modelling constraints in enterprise modelling.

This study aims to investigate whether and how a learning-from-error climate is associated with work-related flow experiences by employees. Drawing on the tenets of Job Demands-Resources theory, we propose that this relationship is mediated by a work-related growth mindset. The study tests a mediation model by conducting structural equations modelling. Data were gathered in two waves from 159 employees within a Dutch financial organization. Results demonstrate that work-related mindset significantly mediates the relationship between a learning-from-error climate and work-related flow. In this study, we address the call for studies that empirically assess the influence of organizational climate on work-related flow in a multiwave study design. Specifically, we highlight the relevance of understanding how individual dispositions can shape the effects of a learning-from-error climate on work-related flow.

The 2030 Agenda recognizes the role of the private sector and calls on its innovative and creative capabilities to help solve sustainable development challenges. Judging by the embracement of the SDGs in sustainability reporting, this call seems to resonate. However, the extent to which companies actually make a contribution to solving SDG challenges remains unclear. This paper aims to explore this innovative contribution to the SDGs. It does so by assessing the level of SDG relevant innovation by the largest multinational enterprises in the world. We develop a method for the identification of SDG relevant patent applications, distinguishing between “green” patents, related to environmental themes, and “blue” patents, related to “improving conditions” and meeting unmet sustainable development needs. In addition, we explore whether the level of SDG relevant innovation is systematically associated with a number of company characteristics. Our results show that large MNEs have similar levels of green patents, and lower levels of blue patents, compared to smaller companies. Using regression analysis, we find that there are regional and industry-specific differences. Corporate sustainable development attributes such as Global Compact membership and sustainability reporting, are less convincingly associated. It can be concluded that MNEs play an important role in SDG relevant innovation, but that there are trade-offs between different SDGs. Some SDG relevant innovation is not commonly associated with sustainable development. This study attempts to quantify the actual effect of sustainability strategies of companies by identifying their sustainable patents and associates this to company characteristics, using a new method for sustainable patent identification. Moreover, SDG relevant innovation is taken beyond green innovation to include the whole range of technical innovation that is related to the broad range of SDGs.

Many companies have developed a green marketing strategy, aimed at promoting and selling green environmental products. While the majority of articles on this topic report on studies in a business-to-consumer setting, this research focusses on the impact of green marketing strategies on the satisfaction and loyalty of professional buyers in a business-to-business setting. Hypotheses were tested with survey data from 148 Dutch professional purchasers in the cleaning industry. The results emphasize the impact and importance of product quality, product price and corporate image. The most notable and strong impact on satisfaction and loyalty was found for the salesperson expertise.

Open innovation is a viable strategy to solve wicked problems. However, the complexity of these types of problems renders the management of open innovation initiatives (even) more difficult. How can managers make open innovation for complex or even wicked problems work? This article examines case studies of open innovation initiatives adopting a health care service innovation. It uses the proximity framework to identify several ways in which open innovation barriers can be overcome despite their complexity. The case study findings show how partners leverage their differences to the benefit of service innovation in the face of wicked problems.

PurposeBuying companies in the food industry increasingly recognize the need to cultivate relationships with their suppliers. Social capital and power are important to understand buyer–supplier relationships. Maintaining these relationships appears highly dependent on the degree of information sharing.Design/methodology/approachThe study investigates how power and social capital dimensions are related to information sharing. A survey of first-tier suppliers in the Dutch meat processing industry was carried out. The data from 82 suppliers was analyzed using partial least squares.FindingsIt appears that expert power contributes to the cognitive and structural social capital. In contrast, coercive power showed no influence at all. Cognitive and structural social capital dimensions have a direct link to relational social capital, which significantly improves buyer–supplier information sharing in the food industry.Practical implicationsBuying companies can encourage supplier information sharing by building up their own expertise and cultivating social relationships. They should refrain from strong-handed practices.Originality/valueCompanies in the food and food processing industry are dependent on effective information exchange for their very survival. This study investigates the role of power and social capital in making such exchange possible and sustainable.

This article assesses the evolving ‘stringency’ of multilateral climate mitigation governance towards the 2015 Paris Agreement. To do so, we systematically distinguish four key dimensions of hard/soft governance: (1) formal legal status; (2) the nature of the obligations (procedural-substantive); (3) prescriptiveness and precision; and (4) implementation review and response. We find that the governance approach of the Paris Agreement is significantly softer than the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, but harder than the 2010 Cancun Agreements under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. As a result, the Paris Agreement has had a differentiated effect on the stringency of governance. On the one side, it has softened climate governance for countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol, most notably the European Union. On the other side, it has hardened the international governance framework for developing countries and industrialised countries that are not subject to the Kyoto Protocol, including the US, Japan, Canada, and Russia. The shifting climate geopolitics of the twenty-first century helps us understand this development.

PurposeAdvanced Electronic Medical Records (EMR) provide many potential benefits to hospitals. However, because of their broad scope, many stakeholders deal with the EMR and a continuous effort has to be made to keep up with internal and external change. Therefore, hospitals need to deliberately shape their organizational competencies considering the pursuit of alignment, i.e. making sure that the EMR remains optimally aligned with strategies, goals and needs of the hospital and its stakeholders. This paper aims to investigate the evolutionary paths of these alignment competencies and their drivers, from a theoretical perspective of co-evolutionary information systems alignment (COISA).Design/methodology/approachThis paper reports on a longitudinal multiple case study of three Dutch hospitals which each recently implemented an advanced EMR system. The authors conducted 35 in-depth interviews in 2 phases (before and after go-live of the EMR), and studied documentation related to the EMR implementations.FindingsThe findings show that each hospital's COISA capability shows a different evolutionary path. However, two of the three case hospitals ended up coordinating part of their COISA capability to an ecosystem level, i.e. they incorporated other hospitals using the same EMR system to coordinate their alignment efforts, either from an operational perspective, or in terms of orchestration and strategy. The found evolutionary paths' key drivers include “stakeholder initiative”, “accumulating experience”, “driving events” and “emerging issues”.Originality/valueThe findings help healthcare practitioners to deliberately shape their organization's COISA capability in pursuit of EMR alignment. Furthermore, the authors add to the knowledge base on co-evolutionary approaches to alignment through the longitudinal approach.

Despite initial evidence on employees’ motives for telecommuting, studies so far never investigated if and how distinct telecommuting motives might co-occur. In the current study (N wave 1 = 1297 employees; N wave 2 = 564 employees), we use Latent Class Analysis and identify three classes reflecting three specific combinations of telecommuting motives: the job requirement class (telecommuting because one has to), the efficiency class (telecommuting to cope with deadlines and pressure) and the work-life balance class (telecommuting to have a healthy balance between work and family/leisure). Our analyses show that employees belonging to the same class also tend to share a certain context (in terms of job characteristics such as speed of work and autonomy). Furthermore, the telecommuting motive classes predicted outcomes six months later: Whereas we found no significant associations between the job requirement class and the study outcomes, employees in the efficiency class reported more vigour and less emotional exhaustion, and employees in the work-life balance class reported more vigour, less emotional exhaustion and more job satisfaction. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
