Abstract

Rotational structures have been measured using the Jurogam II and GAMMASPHERE arrays at low spin following the 155Gd({\alpha},2n)157Dy and 148Nd(12C, 5n)155Dy reactions at 25 and 65 MeV, respectively. We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a K{\pi}= 2+ {\gamma} vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2- neutron orbital, in both odd-A 155, 157Dy isotopes. The coupling of the first excited K=0+ states or the so-called \b{eta} vibrational bands at 661 and 676 keV in 154Dy and 156Dy to the [505]11/2- orbital, to produce a K{\pi}=11/2- band, was not observed in both 155Dy and 157Dy, respectively. The implication of these findings on the interpretation of the first excited 0+ states in the core nuclei 154Dy and 156Dy are also discussed., Comment: Published in Physical Rev C

Abstract

Isospin properties of dipole excitations in 74 Ge are investigated using the ({\alpha},{\alpha}'{\gamma}) reaction and compared to ({\gamma},{\gamma}) data. The results indicate that the dipole excitations in the energy region of 6 to 9 MeV adhere to the scenario of the recently found splitting of the region of dipole excitations into two separated parts: one at low energy, being populated by both isoscalar and isovector probes, and the other at high energy, excited only by the electromagnetic probe. Relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation (RQTBA) calculations show a reduction in the isoscalar E1 strength with an increase in excitation energy, which is consistent with the measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

High-spin states of the odd-odd nucleus Lu-168 were populated in the Sb-123(Ca-48, 3n) Lu-168 reaction at a beam energy of 203 MeV and decay gamma rays measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer array. The level scheme has been extended from spin 27 to 50 (h) over bar, and three new rotational bands have been added. A number of interband linking transitions were revealed, so that all but two bands could be connected with each other. High-spin band crossings, above the first vi(13/2) alignment, are delineated in most bands. Significant signature inversions are identified for the first time in the bands involving both favored and unfavored signatures of the pi h(9/2) orbital, which are likely caused by a residual proton-neutron interaction. A signature inversion with small amplitude is also observed in the pi d(5/2) circle times vi(13/2) band. Configurations are suggested for all bands based on their experimental properties, with the help of Cranked Shell Model calculations. No evidence is found for triaxial strongly deformed structures that were predicted by the calculations.

We report high-K bands, which are conjectured to be the first candidates of a Kπ=2⁺γ vibrational band, built on the [505]11/2⁻ neutron orbital, in both odd-A155,157Dy isotopes. Abstract

A comprehensive systematic study is made for the collective β and γ bands in even-even isotopes with neutron numbers N=88 to 92 and proton numbers Z=62(Sm) to 70 (Yb). Data, including excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) values, and branching ratios from previously published experiments are collated with new data presented for the first time in this study. The experimental data are compared to calculations using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) based on the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). A realistic potential in the quadrupole shape parameters V(β,γ) is determined from potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated using the CDFT. The parameters of the 5DCH are fixed and contained within the CDFT. Overall, a satisfactory agreement is found between the data and the calculations. In line with the energy staggering S(I) of the levels in the 2γ+ bands, the potential energy surfaces of the CDFT calculations indicate γ-soft shapes in the N=88 nuclides, which become γ rigid for N=90 and N=92. The nature of the 02+ bands changes with atomic number. In the isotopes of Sm to Dy, they can be understood as β vibrations, but in the Er and Yb isotopes the 02+ bands have wave functions with large components in a triaxial superdeformed minimum. In the vicinity of 152Sm, the present calculations predict a soft potential in the β direction but do not find two coexisting minima. This is reminiscent of 152Sm exhibiting an X(5) behavior. The model also predicts that the 03+ bands are of two-phonon nature, having an energy twice that of the 02+ band. This is in contradiction with the data and implies that other excitation modes must be invoked to explain their origin. peerReviewed

Abstract

Excited states in l67Lu were populated in the l23Sb(48Ca,4n) reaction at 203 MeV and decay γ rays measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer array. Two triaxial strongly deformed bands were identified previously and interpreted as zero- and one-phonon wobbling excitations. As a result of more extensive band search, the level scheme has been considerably extended to include ten new rotational bands and some 630 γ-ray transitions. A number of interband linking transitions were revealed, so that all but two bands could be connected with each other. Configurations are proposed for all new bands based on measured observables, with the help of cranked shell model calculations. A γ-ray sequence, previously suggested as a triaxial strongly deformed band based on quasiparticle excitations coexisting with the wobbling excitation in the triaxial potential well, has now been determined to be a signature partner of a coupled band, associated with a normal deformed five-quasiparticle configuration. The possibility of two new bands being associated with triaxial deformation is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

High-spin states in Bi-197 were studied with the AFRODITE gamma-ray array at iThemba LABS using the Ta-181(Ne-22, 6n) reaction at a beam energy of 125 MeV. A new shears band was found and linked to the low-lying states in Bi-197. Its dynamic moment of inertia, F (2), is considerably larger than the ((2)) of the shears bands in the neighbouring Pb isotopes. Abstract

Excited states in Ta-164 were populated in the Nd-142(Al-27,5n)Ta-164 reaction and investigated using the AFRODITE spectrometer Arran. The yrast rotational decay sequence Lip to spin 21(-) is identified for the first time and assigned to the pi[514]9/2(-) x nu[660]1/2(+) configuration. A less intense. excited hand is also identified. Low-spin signature inversion is observed in the yrast band, and is compared with the extended total Routhian surface calculations. It is likely that quadrupole pairing plays a role in generating the anomalous signature splitting, but an additional mechanism apart front the assumed mean field and quadrupole pairing interaction may be required to account for the experimental data., QC 20100525
