Abstract

French Guiana experienced an unprecedented dengue epidemic during 2023–2024. Prior to the 2023–2024 outbreak in French Guiana, DENV-3 had not circulated in an epidemic manner since 2005. We therefore studied retrospectively the strains circulating in the French Territories of the Americas (FTA)—French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Martinique—from the 2000s to the current epidemic. To this end, DENV-3 samples from the collection of the National Reference Center for Arboviruses in French Guiana (NRCA-FG) were selected and sequenced using next-generation sequencing (NGS) based on Oxford Nanopore Technologies, ONT. Phylogenetic analysis showed that (i) the 97 FTA sequences obtained all belonged to genotype III (GIII); (ii) between the 2000s and 2013, the regional circulation of the GIII American-I lineage was the source of the FTA cases through local extinctions and re-introductions; (iii) multiple introductions of lineages of Asian origin appear to be the source of the 2019–2021 epidemic in Martinique and the 2023–2024 epidemic in French Guiana. Abstract

Arboviruses can be difficult to detect in the field due to relatively low prevalence in mosquito populations. The discovery that infected mosquitoes can release viruses in both their saliva and excreta gave rise to low-cost methods for the detection of arboviruses during entomological surveillance. We implemented both saliva and excreta-based entomological surveillance during the emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in French Guiana in 2016 by trapping mosquitoes around households of symptomatic cases with confirmed ZIKV infection. ZIKV was detected in mosquito excreta and not in mosquito saliva in 1 trap collection out of 85 (1.2%). One female Ae. aegyptiL. (Diptera: Culicidae) was found with a ZIKV systemic infection in the corresponding trap. The lag time between symptom onset in a ZIKV-infected individual living near the trap site and ZIKV detection in this mosquito was 1 wk. These results highlight the potential of detection in excreta from trapped mosquitoes as a sensitive and cost-effective method to non invasively detect arbovirus circulation.Graphical Abstract

Abstract

A seismic time reversal experiment based on Time Reversal Mirror (TRM) technique was conducted in the mesoscopically scaled medium at the LSBB Laboratory, France. Two sets of 50 Hz geophones were distributed at one meter intervals in two horizontal and parallel galleries 100 m apart, buried 250 m below the surface. The shot source used was a 4 kg sledgehammer. Analysis shows that elastic seismic energy is refocused in space and time to the shot locations with good accuracy. The refocusing ability of seismic energy to the shot locations is roughly achieved for the direct field, and with excellent quality, for the early and later coda. Hyper-focussing is achieved at the shot points as a consequence of the fine scale randomly heterogeneous medium between the galleries. TRM experiment is sensitive to the roughness of the mirror used. Roughness induces a slight experimental discrepancy between recording and re-emitting directions degrading the quality of the reversal process., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures - This paper aimed at describing time reversal mirror method applied at mesoscopic scale to a natural medium in the frame of an active seismic experiment. Abstract

We investigated two mitochondrial genes (cytb and cox1), one plastid gene (tufA), and one nuclear gene (ldh) in blood samples from 12 chimpanzees and two gorillas from Cameroon and one lemur from Madagascar. One gorilla sample is related to Plasmodium falciparum, thus confirming the recently reported presence in gorillas of this parasite. The second gorilla sample is more similar to the recently defined Plasmodium gaboni than to the P. falciparum-Plasmodium reichenowi clade, but distinct from both. Two chimpanzee samples are P. falciparum. A third sample is P. reichenowi and two others are P. gaboni. The other chimpanzee samples are different from those in the ape clade: two are Plasmodium ovale, and one is Plasmodium malariae. That is, we have found three human Plasmodium parasites in chimpanzees. Four chimpanzee samples were mixed: one species was P. reichenowi; the other species was P. gaboni in three samples and P. ovale in the fourth sample. The lemur sample, provisionally named Plasmodium malagasi, is a sister lineage to the large cluster of primate parasites that does not include P. falciparum or ape parasites, suggesting that the falciparum + ape parasite cluster (Laverania clade) may have evolved from a parasite present in hosts not ancestral to the primates. If malignant malaria were eradicated from human populations, chimpanzees, in addition to gorillas, might serve as a reservoir for P. falciparum.

Abstract

Overview of infectious and non-infectious diseases in French Guiana in 2022 Source of many myths, French Guiana represents an exceptional territory due to the richness of its biodiversity and the variety of its communities. The only European territory in Amazonia, surrounded by the Brazilian giant and the little-known Suriname, Ariane 6 rockets are launched from Kourou while 50% of the population lives below the poverty line. This paradoxical situation is a source of health problems specific to this territory, whether they be infectious diseases with unknown germs, intoxications or chronic pathologies. Some infectious diseases such as Q fever, toxoplasmosis, cryptococcosis or HIV infection are in common with temperate countries, but present specificities leading to sometimes different management and medical reasoning. In addition to these pathologies, many tropical diseases are present in an endemic and / or epidemic mode such as malaria, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, histoplasmosis or dengue. Besides, Amazonian dermatology is extremely varied, ranging from rare but serious pathologies (Buruli ulcer, leprosy) to others which are frequent and benign such as agouti lice (mites of the family Trombiculidae) or papillonitis. Envenomations by wild fauna are not rare, and deserve an appropriate management of the incriminated taxon. Obstetrical, cardiovascular and metabolic cosmopolitan pathologies sometimes take on a particular dimension in French Guiana that must be taken into account in the management of patients. Finally, different types of intoxication are to be known by practitioners, especially due to heavy metals. European-level resources offer diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities that do not exist in the surrounding countries and regions, thus allowing the management of diseases that are not well known elsewhere. Thanks to these same European-level resources, research in Guyana occupies a key place within the Amazon region, despite a smaller population than in the surrounding countries. Thus, certain pathologies such as histoplasmosis of the immunocompromised patient, Amazonian toxoplasmosis or Q fever are hardly described in neighboring countries, probably due to under-diagnosis linked to more limited resources. French Guiana plays a leading role in the study of these diseases. The objective of this overview is to guide health care providers coming to or practicing in French Guiana in their daily practice, but also practitioners taking care of people returning from French Guiana. Seul territoire européen en Amazonie, entouré du géant brésilien et du méconnu Suriname, on y lance des fusées Ariane 6 depuis Kourou tandis que 50 % de la population vit en dessous du seuil de pauvreté. Cette situation paradoxale est source de problématiques de santé spécifiques à ce territoire, qu’il s’agisse de maladies infectieuses à germes méconnus, d’intoxications, ou de pathologies chroniques. Certaines maladies infectieuses telles que la fièvre Q, la toxoplasmose, la cryptococcose ou l’infection à VIH sont communes aux pays tempérés, mais présentent en Guyane des spécificités entraînant une prise en charge et un raisonnement médical parfois différents. Parallèlement à ces pathologies, de nombreuses maladies tropicales sont par ailleurs présentes sur un mode endémique et / ou épidémique telles que le paludisme, la leishmaniose, la maladie de Chagas, l’histoplasmose ou la dengue. De plus, la dermatologie amazonienne est extrêmement variée, allant de pathologies rares, mais graves (ulcère de Buruli, lèpre), à d’autres fréquentes et bénignes telles que les poux d’agouti (acariens de la famille des Trombiculidae) ou la papillonite. Les envenimations par la faune sauvage ne sont pas rares, et méritent une prise en charge appropriée au taxon incriminé. Les pathologies obstétricale, cardiovasculaire et métabolique cosmopolites prennent parfois en Guyane une dimension particulière à prendre en compte dans la prise en charge des patients. Enfin, différents types d’intoxication sont à connaître par les praticiens, notamment aux métaux lourds. Les ressources de niveau européen offrent des possibilités diagnostiques et thérapeutiques inexistantes dans les pays et régions des environs, permettant ainsi la prise en charge de maladies peu connues ailleurs. Du fait de ces mêmes ressources de niveau européen, la recherche en Guyane occupe une place clé au sein de la région amazonienne, malgré une population moins nombreuse que dans les pays alentour. Ainsi, certaines pathologies telles que l’histoplasmose du patient immunodéprimé, la toxoplasmose amazonienne ou la fièvre Q ne sont pratiquement pas décrites dans les pays voisins, probablement du fait d’un sous-diagnostic lié à des ressources plus limitées. La Guyane joue ainsi un rôle moteur dans l’étude de ces pathologies. Abstract

International audience; Geophysical imaging methods are often applied for analysing landslides; they can help detecting and localizing the landslide structures, distinguishing between lithologies, layers and slip surfaces of variable mechanical responses, and identifying the fluid storage and circulation paths.We present a joined analysis of two 3D geophysical models acquired from a dense electrical resistivity tomography (Fullwaver nodes) and a dense seismic travel-time tomography (DENSAR nodes) acquired at the Viella landslide (Hautes-Pyrenees, France). Fusion of the two geophysical models and of ancillary geotechnical and hydrogeological information from boreholes is carried out using machine learning, in order to predict the location of the different slope structures.

Abstract

The magnitude, quality, and maintenance of immunological memory after infection or vaccination must be considered for future design of effective influenza vaccines. In 2009, the influenza pandemic produced disease that ranged from mild to severe, even fatal, illness in infected healthy adults and led to vaccination of a portion of the population with the adjuvanted, inactivated influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine. Here, we have proposed a multiparameter quantitative and qualitative approach to comparing adaptive immune memory to influenza 1 year after mild or severe infection or vaccination. One year after antigen encounter, severely ill subjects maintained high levels of humoral and polyfunctional effector/memory [CD4.sup.+] T cells responses, while mildly ill and vaccinated subjects retained strong cellular immunity, as indicated by high levels of mucosal homing and degranulation markers on IFN-[γ.sup.+] antigen-specific T cells. A principal component analysis distinguished 3 distinct clusters of individuals. The first group comprised vaccinated and mildly ill subjects, while clusters 2 and 3 included mainly infected individuals. Each cluster had immune memory profiles that differed in magnitude and quality.
