Abstract

Skeletal muscles are living tissues that can undergo large deformations in short periods of time and that can be activated to produce force. In this paper we use the principles of continuum mechanics to propose a dynamic, fully non-linear, and three-dimensional model to describe the deformation of these tissues. We model muscles as a fibre-reinforced composite and transversely isotropic material. We introduce a flexible computational framework to approximate the deformations of skeletal muscle to provide new insights into the underlying mechanics of these tissues. The model parameters and mechanical properties are obtained through experimental data and can be specified locally. A semi-implicit in time, conforming finite element in space scheme is used to approximate the solutions to the governing nonlinear dynamic model. We provide a series of numerical experiments demonstrating the application of this framework to relevant problems in biomechanics, and also discuss questions around model validation.

6. Sessional Contract Faculty, Unionization, and Academic Freedom

Abstract

This article explores the relationship between unionization and academic freedom protections for sessional faculty in Ontario universities. Specifically, we compare university policies and contract provisions with a view to determining whether unionized sessionals hired on a per-course basis have stronger academic freedom protections than their non-union counterparts. We then explore whether particular kinds of bargaining unit structures are more conducive to achieving stronger academic freedom provisions. Finally, we consider whether academic freedom can be exercised effectively by sessionals, whether unionized or not. We conclude that unionization does help to produce stronger academic freedom protections for sessional faculty and that faculty association bargaining unit structures are most likely to help deliver this outcome. We further conclude that academic freedom is difficult to exercise for sessional faculty, regardless of union status, but that unionization offers greater protections for sessionals facing repercussions as a result of asserting their academic freedom.

7. Strategies for Network-Safe Load Control with a Third-Party Aggregator and a Distribution Operator

Abstract

When providing bulk power system services, a third-party aggregator could inadvertently cause operational issues at the distribution level. We propose a coordination architecture in which an aggregator and distribution operator coordinate to avoid distribution network constraint violations, while preserving private information. The aggregator controls thermostatic loads to provide frequency regulation, while the distribution operator overrides the aggregator's control actions when necessary to ensure safe network operation. Using this architecture, we propose two control strategies, which differ in terms of measurement and communication requirements, as well as model complexity and scalability. The first uses an aggregate model and blocking controller, while the second uses individual load models and a mode-count controller. Both outperform a benchmark strategy in terms of tracking accuracy. Furthermore, the second strategy performs better than the first, with only 0.10% average RMS error (compared to 0.70%). The second is also able to maintain safe operation of the distribution network while overriding less than 1% of the aggregator's control actions (compared to approximately 15% by the first strategy). However, the second strategy has significantly more measurement, communication, and computational requirements, and therefore would be more complex and expensive to implement than the first strategy.

Abstract

The way electricity is generated and consumed in the US is quickly changing, including in terms of the rapid growth in variable power generation resources and the need for large-scale investments to replace aging infrastructure and modernize the grid. Buildings that coordinate electricity use with grid conditions are a flexible and cost-effective resource to address the evolving power system challenges. Outfitted with smart technologies, GEBs are energy-efficient buildings with smart technologies characterized by the active use of distributed energy resources to optimize energy use for grid services, occupant needs and preferences, and cost reductions in a continuous and integrated way. In doing so, GEBs can play a key role in promoting greater affordability, resilience, environmental performance, and reliability. The report finds that, over the next two decades, GEBs could deliver between $100 and $200 billion in savings to the US power system and cut CO2 emissions by 80 million tons per year by 2030, or 6% of total power sector CO2 emissions. The report also provides 14 recommendations for addressing the top barriers to overcome barriers to GEB adoption and deployment.

13. Effects of Load-Based Frequency Regulation on Distribution Network Operation

Abstract

This paper examines the operation of distribution networks that have large aggregations of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) providing secondary frequency regulation to the bulk power system. Specifically, we assess the prevalence of distribution network constraint violations, such as over- or under-voltages and overloading of transformers. Our goal is to determine the set of constraints that are at increased risk of being violated when TCLs provide regulation. We compare network operation in two cases: first with TCLs operating freely, and second with TCLs controlled to track a regulation signal. Using GridLAB-D, we run power flow simulations of five real distribution networks. Our results indicate that voltage limits are at increased risk of violation when TCLs provide regulation because of increased voltage variation. Effects on transformer aging are more nuanced and depend on the method used for dispatching TCLs. We find that in many distribution networks it may only be necessary to consider voltage constraints when designing a TCL control strategy that protects the distribution network., Comment: 10 pages, journal article in review
