Abstract

The influence of Sb content, substrate type and cap layers on the quantum anomalous Hall effect observed in V-doped (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ magnetic topological insulators is investigated. Thin layers showing excellent quantization are reproducibly deposited by molecular beam epitaxy at growth conditions effecting a compromise between controlled layer properties and high crystalline quality. The Sb content can be reliably determined from the in-plane lattice constant measured by X-ray diffraction, even in thin layers. This is the main layer parameter to be optimized in order to approach charge neutrality. Within a narrow range at about 80% Sb content, the Hall resistivity shows a maximum of about 10 k$\Omega$ at 4 K and quantizes at mK temperatures. Under these conditions, thin layers grown on Si(111) or InP(111) and with or without a Te cap exhibit quantization. The quantization persists independently of the interfaces between cap, layer and substrate, the limited crystalline quality, and the degradation of the layer proving the robustness of the quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Abstract

The AEgIS experiment at CERN aims to perform the first direct measurement of gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter by measuring the deviation of a cold antihydrogen beam in the Earth gravitational field. The design of the experiment has been recently updated to include emulsion films as position sensitive detector. The submicrometric position accuracy of emulsions leads indeed to a significant improvement of the experimental sensitivity. We present results of preliminary tests and discuss perspectives for the final measurement.

Abstract

Investigations on antimatter allow us to shed light on fundamental issues of contemporary physics. The only antiatom presently available, antihydrogen, is produced making use of the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility at CERN. International collaborations currently on the floor (ALPHA, ASACUSA and ATRAP) have succeeded in producing antihydrogen and are now involved in its confinement and manipulation. The AEGIS experiment is currently completing the commissioning of the apparatus which will generate and manipulate antiatoms. The present paper, after a report on the main results achieved with antihydrogen physics, gives an overview of the AEGIS experiment, describes its current status and discusses its first target.

International audience; The present status of the AEGIS experiment at CERN (AD-06), on the way of forming anti-hydrogen for a first gravity measurement, is reviewed.Recent results in trapping and cooling positrons and antiprotons in the main electromagnetic traps are presented, including the storage time measurement obtained during the 2014 run with antiprotons, the observation of centrifugal separation of a mixed antiproton/electron plasma and positron accumulation and transfer results obtained during 2015.

23. Energy-Efficient Treatment of Digestates with an Optimised Membrane Process

Abstract

The large amount of biogas plants in Germany and the regional gradients of number and size of plants necessitate an adequate conditioning process for digestates. Limitations for the main nutrient fractions of fertiliser are shown with respect to the old and latest fertiliser order (Düngeverordnung). Focus of this work is the total conditioning process for treatment of digestates with the use of membrane technique. As the energy efficiency of the membrane process needs to be improved in order to compete with other separation techniques, the membrane flux behaviour and rheological behaviour of digestate was analysed. The results show the fundamental relation of membrane performance and organic content and the influence of the digestates rheology on energy demand of the ultrafiltration process. Digestate characteristics are shown for 20 different samples of digestates from agricultural biogas plants and 4 samples of bio-waste biogas plants.A final focus on energy demand gives opportunities for potential improvements of the filtration process., Proceedings of the 23rd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 1-4 June 2015, Vienna, Austria, pp. 599-608

32. Nutrient recovery from anaerobic sludge by membrane filtration: pilot tests at a 2.5 MWebiogas plant

Abstract

Membrane filtration is recently applied to recover nutrients and dischargeable water from anaerobic sludge. The purpose of this study is to quantify nutrient separation, membrane performance, and process stability and to increase the economical applicability of the process by energetic optimisation. At the site of a 2.5 MWeagricultural biogas plant, a membrane pilot plant was operated over a period of 7 months. It consisted of a screw press separator, a decanter centrifuge, an ultrafiltration unit, and a three-stage reverse osmosis unit. Mass and nutrient balances were generated by sampling and analysing every process stream. Process performance was analysed by monitoring separation efficiencies, membrane flux, cleaning intervals, and energy demand. Solid/liquid separation resulted in separation efficiencies of 70% for total solids and 80% for phosphorus. The solid fraction contained high concentrations of organics and particle-ligated nutrients (20% TS, 8 kg t−1Ntotal, 5.5 kg t−1P2O5). The retentate of the reverse osmosis had high concentrations of dissolved ammonia and potassium (4 kg t−1NH4–N and 10 kg t−1K2O). 38% of the sludge volume was recovered as clean water. The membrane pilot plant successfully produced a solid N/P-fertiliser, a liquid N/K-fertiliser and clean water. The results contribute to a sound understanding and growing database for future adaption of the process chain. Hydrodynamic optimisation within the pilot plant reduced the energy demand of the ultrafiltration step by 50%, which considerably contributes to the economy of the process.

Abstract

Abstract: A hollow fibre membrane contactor (HFMC) comprised of nonporous symmetric ultrathin wall polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fibres has been studied for biogas upgrading to establish if the ultrathin wall can enable low resistance to mass transfer coupled with enhanced selectivity for carbon dioxide (CO2). For a feed gas CO2 mole fraction of 80%, a CO2 flux of 1.25×10−4 molm−2 s−1 was recorded which was higher than expected and is ostensibly due to the thin wall and the absence of a support layer which can limit gas transfer due to concentration polarisation. Maximum CO2 flux was recorded at the highest liquid velocity tested due to a reduction in the thickness of the liquid phase boundary layer. Resistance in series analysis demonstrated that by limiting liquid phase resistance, mass transfer was controlled by the PDMS membrane and selectivity toward CO2 was analogous to the ideal selectivity imparted by PDMS. In comparison, mass transfer was liquid phase controlled for a microporous HFMC that comprised of fibres with equivalent wall thickness. Whilst PDMS presents a higher theoretical selectivity when compared to the gas filled pore of a microporous fibre, higher selectivity was provided by the microporous fibre due to the solvents selectivity, which established that selectivity is dependent upon the controlling phase boundary. Though higher CO2 fluxes were achieved with microporous fibres, ultrathin PDMS fibres are potentially beneficial for gases with a low CO2 mole fraction due to their greater resistance to wetting. However, at higher CO2 mole fraction, PDMS HFMC are only viable by increasing CO2 flux through overpressure or reduction in wall thickness, though the feasibility is impingent upon validating the fibres mechanical integrity for both conditions.
