2. Classification of damping properties of fabric-reinforced flat beam-like specimens by a degree of ondulation implying a mesomechanic kinematic

Abstract

In order to determine the influence of the ondulations in fabrics on the damping properties of fiber-reinforced plastics, the structural dynamic properties of fabric- and unidirectionally reinforced plastics are investigated. The free decay behavior of flat beam-like specimens is investigated under fixed-free boundary conditions. As the material damping is consistently higher in fabric-reinforced specimens compared to unidirectionally reinforced ones, a contribution of an additionally acting mesomechanic kinematic in fabric weaves is implied. Based on a degree of ondulation, it is possible to classify the enhancement of the material damping and determine the corresponding energy dissipation. The study provides valuable quantitative relations of the additional damping effect due to the mesomechanic kinematic. Compared to the unidirectionally reinforced material, plain weave enhances the material damping by 37…52% at O˜PL=0.0133{\tilde{O}}_{{\rm{PL}}}=0.0133, whereas twill weave 2/2 enhances it by 31…40% at O˜T2=0.0098{\tilde{O}}_{{\rm{T2}}}=0.0098. The consideration of the findings contributes to a deeper understanding of the visco-elastic dynamic behavior of fabric-reinforced plastics and allows further applications in research, development, and industry.

Abstract

Against the backdrop of a critical reflection on the psychiatric concepts of organicism and predisposition to mental illness, the research investigates the relationship between psychiatry and the Great War from a perspective that considers the complexity of the orientations assumed by both the Italian alienists on war pathologies and the health practices implemented towards soldiers. The study highlights the comparison/clash between two totally different approaches forced to coexist during the conflict: on one side, the one from military psychiatry, and on the other the distinctive one from civil asylums. The two perspectives were not always clearly separated, but it is possible to detect a constant tension between the duties towards the war effort and the professional ethics dictated by the neuropsychiatric discipline.

6. Empowering Teachers to Create Augmented Reality Experiences: The Effects on The Educational Experience

Abstract

Well-designed educational Augmented Reality (AR) experiences support collaboration, transferability to the real world, situated, and experiential learning. Nevertheless, envisioning engaging yet effective learning and teaching experiences is a challenge. Most teachers are not technologically ready to create AR experiences and rely upon closed products often regarded as fun activities but whose learning affordances might remain unnoticed and whose integration within the course activities is often shoehorned. End-User Development tools empowering not technical users like teachers to create their own AR experience could contribute to spread the use of this technology in educational settings. In this paper, we analyze whether a EUD AR tool based on mobile technology can have positive effects on the educational experience from a teaching and learning perspective. We performed qualitative and quantitative research in a high school analyzing the tool in a focus group with teachers and assessing its effects on the educational experience by using it in two real classes. Results show that even if using the tool implies an additional workload for teachers, results can be rewarding for both, teachers and students that are skilled enough to use AR as far as it is based on easy, familiar, and affordable devices like mobile devices.

Abstract

Photon indistinguishability plays a fundamental role in information processing, with applications such as linear-optical quantum computation and metrology. It is then necessary to develop appropriate tools to quantify the amount of this resource in a multiparticle scenario. Here we report a four-photon experiment in a linear-optical interferometer designed to simultaneously estimate the degree of indistinguishability between three pairs of photons. The interferometer design dispenses with the need of heralding for parametric down-conversion sources, resulting in an efficient and reliable optical scheme. We then use a recently proposed theoretical framework to quantify genuine four-photon indistinguishability, as well as to obtain bounds on three unmeasured two-photon overlaps. Our findings are in high agreement with the theory, and represent a new resource-effective technique for the characterization of multiphoton interference., Comment: 8+8 pages, 5+5 figures

Abstract

This paper presents an organizing framework of Entrepreneurship Education (EE) evolving strategies to fulfill third mission in an Entrepreneurial University. Actually, universities are struggling to face the challenges in achieving third mission objectives enhancing entrepreneurial culture to prosper in an entrepreneurial society. In this context, there is currently no clear categorization in the literature of the different EE academic strategies able to contribute differently to third mission goals and impact. Gathering from the literature on EE, the paper typifies academic EE strategies and their evolution toward an ecosystemic approach that is here seen as an ideal scenario to align EE within the mission and values expected to achieve third mission outcomes and impact. The contribution is a starting point for future research in the field, paving the way for empirical validations able to highlight the link between University EE strategy and University ability to implement its third mission. It can also serve as a guide for entrepreneurship educators, university executives and policy makers to develop extensive and effective strategies in the EE field.

Abstract

Paediatric heart transplant is an established treatment for end stage heart failure in children, however patients have to commit to lifelong medical surveillance and adhere to daily immunosuppressants to minimise the risk of rejection. Compliance with immunosuppressants can be burdensome with their toxic side effects and need for frequent blood monitoring especially in children. Though the incidence of early rejection episodes has significantly improved overtime, the long-term allograft health and survival is determined by Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy (CAV) which affects a vast number of post-transplant patients. Once CAV has set in, there is no medical or surgical treatment to reverse it and graft survival is significantly compromised across all age groups. Current treatment strategies include novel immunosuppressant agents and drugs to lower blood lipid levels to address the underlying immunological pathophysiology and to manage traditional cardiac risk factors. Translational researchers are seeking novel immunological approaches that can lead to permanent acceptance of the allograft such as using regulatory T cell (Tregs) immunotherapy. Clinical trials in the setting of graft versus host disease, autoimmunity and kidney and liver transplantation using Tregs have shown the feasibility and safety of this strategy. This review will summarise current knowledge of the latest clinical therapies for CAV and pre-clinical evidence in support of Treg therapy for CAV. We will also discuss the different Treg sources and the considerations of translating this into a feasible immunotherapy in clinical practice in the paediatric population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study examined the ill effects caused by addiction to online gambling in Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City. Online gambling (or Internet gambling) is an online gambling conduct. Gambling addiction—pathological gambling, compulsive gambling, or gambling disorder—is an impulse-control disorder. The risk of mental health consequences has been highlighted (Holmes et al., 2020), and this also includes a risk of increased online behaviour, such as increased video gaming (King et al., 2020) or addiction to internet use (Sun et al., 2020). Similarly, the existing online gambling behaviour is an additional concern in society, particularly in the Philippines, where gambling is legal, and no Filipino laws state that it is illegal online gambling.     Using the descriptive method approach helps the researcher to gather comprehensive data for the study. Descriptive research design can be used to answer what, where, when, and how questions, but not why questions will also guide the researcher in investigating one or more variables. The researcher's objective is to address whether there is an argument for participating in online gambling.   The researchers used respondents' questionnaires to collect information from their perceptions and carefully constructed them to formulate exact details for the study. Also, to fully understand the respondents’ approach regarding their answers, the researcher used an unstructured kind of interview were this kind of interview use, especially when the interviewer throw a follow-up question to a responder when they are not satisfied with their answer.   The researcher utilizes twenty respondents, consisting of 10 barangay officials and ten purok vendors from Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City. Based on the demographic profile of the study from the two groups of respondents’ barangay officials and purok vendors, the majority of the respondents both came from the age bracket of 34-41 years old, male for barangay officials

Abstract

Hippopotamus antiquus was an extinct semiaquatic megaherbivore foraging mainly on aquatic vegetation, with a biochronological range in the Italian peninsula spanning from around 2.2 to 0.4 Ma. Considering its large body size, and its lifestyle considered to be more aquatic than the current form H. amphibius, a correct estimate of the body mass is interesting to correctly interpret various biological aspects of this extinct megaherbivore. In this contribution, we propose an estimate of the body mass of H. antiquus by comparing the results obtained with classical regression formulae with the values obtained through a new 3D volumetric approach. For both approaches, we used the mounted specimen on display at the Museum of Geology and Palaeontology of the University of Florence. As already found in recent contributions, the estimates obtained with the regression methods provide very high ranges compared to the volumetric approach, with minimum estimates of 200 kg and maximum estimates of over 6 tons, completely incompatible with a tetrapod of this size. The new volumetric estimate provides an average value for the BM in H. antiquus of approximately 3170 tons, thus confirming a body weight approximately double compared to the average values in the extant species H. amphibius. Abstract

During the sampling of a stratigraphic section along the shore of the Fiastra Lake (Carg Project - Sheet 313 “Camerino” of the Geological Map of Italy at 1:50 000 scale), a small rock boulder with partially exposed bony material was discovered at the base of a small cliff at the northern termination of the Sibillini Mts. In this area, the classical facies of Umbria-Marche stratigraphic succession are well-exposed. The Oligocene-Miocene portion of the succession is represented by the ~200 m-thick Scaglia Cinerea Formation, passing upwards to the ~100 m-thick Bisciaro Formation. The microfossil assemblage has allowed the specimen to be constrained to the lower Burdigalian. The skeletal remains were examined using a CT-SCAN, a non-invasive method that has proven to be highly performing. The analysis revealed some articulated vertebrae, deformed by lithostatic compaction, which are attributed to a shark of the order Lamniformes. Subsequently, the vertebrae were digitally isolated, extracted from the surrounding matrix, and rendered into three-dimensional prints. Through digital retro-deformation, the body length of the lamniform shark was estimated to be approximately 4 metres. Further considerations on the vertebrae allowed us to infer that the studied shark had similarities to either Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinesque, 1810 or Carcharodon carcharias Linnaeus, 1758. The development of a dead-fall microbial community likely facilitated the preservation of the vertebrae. The studied specimen represents the first occurrence of a lamniform shark in the Lower Miocene of the Umbria-Marche Domain and represents one of the very rare recorded occurrences of lamniforms from the Lower Miocene of Italy [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
