The presence of Roman material in early Anglo-Saxon graves in England is well documented, and recent excavations at Scremby in Lincolnshire have revealed a complete copper-alloy enamelled drinking cup in a sixth-century ad female burial. Not only is such a Roman vessel a very rare find, but also its inclusion in an early medieval grave makes it a unique example of the reuse of an antique object in a funerary context. This article presents a typological and metallurgical analysis of the cup and selected comparative examples from England and France are discussed. The context of deposition and the role the cup played as a burial container for animal fat are examined, as are the mechanisms that lay behind the cup's continued life several centuries after its manufacture. The lower chamber of tower J17 from the Aurelian Walls in Rome is covered by a singular brick vault by slices that is almost completely preserved. This kind of vault is unusual in a Roman context and specifically in Aurelian Walls. Brick vaults by slices were extensively studied by the French engineer Auguste Choisy, who mainly scrutinized their ease of construction that doesn't require formwork and can adapt to different plans to achieve lowered vaults. The best-known examples are in Byzantium and generally in the Eastern Roman Empire, while we don't know many cases dating from late Roman antiquity on the Italian peninsula. Based on a rigorous photogrammetric survey and thorough data management, a detailed analysis of this vault allows us to establish a hypothesis about its construction process and to deepen the knowledge of this type of structure. Asylum has historically been a refuge for the persecuted. However, it now faces a fundamental antagonism between asylum and law, which often overlooks the rights of children seeking asylum. This paper explores the historical concept of asylum law from its inception in antiquity and the Roman era and its entanglements with the education of children. It also examines asylum's relevance to current conflicts over the educational rights of asylum-seeking children and how international conventions have neglected these rights. To contextualize the ambiguity of asylum and education, the paper presents a case study of Norway's reception of asylum-seeking children from the 1930s to the present day and how the Norwegian welfare system, which was founded on child rights protection, has struggled with the entry of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. The paper concludes with reflections on the potential impact of education for these children, considering their encounters as temporary educational moments. This paper examines how scholars of Greek and Roman antiquity in the German-speaking territories in the first half of the nineteenth century define scientificity (Wissenschaftlichkeit). I will argue that antiquity studies in this period of its foundation as a discipline is an instructive case to examine with regard to questions as to how scientific knowledge is established as different from other forms of knowledge, how scientific fields establish relative autonomy from other fields and what forms scientific autonomy can take. Widely recognised as important for the history of the modern research university, the case is not only interesting because it is influential. It is also interesting because the discussions in this period are so different to discussions in the later nineteenth century in the social sciences and the humanities, which have shaped debates about scientificity in sociology and cognate disciplines: We find here a notion of social and cultural research as a scientific endeavour, discussed not primarily with reference to or in defence against the natural sciences, but rather defined against imitative learning and the expectation that research provide moral support for the emerging Germany by idealizing the Greeks. The case highlights moralization as a source of heteronomy in cultural fields in addition to the more widely discussed forces of the market and the influence of the state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to provide new data on forest management and arboricultural practices in the Roman and Late Antique periods in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. In this study, the waterlogged branches found in three wells at the sites of Iesso and Vilauba in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula were analysed. To determine management practices the roundwood method, based on the correlation between age and diameter, has been applied. The study has revealed the presence of a wide range of species collected on surrounding forests, especially in riparian forest. Moreover, it is remarkable the abundance of fruit trees at both sites, being the most abundant Prunus sp. The comparison of the archaeological branches with a reference collection of modern twigs from cultivated and non-managed individuals of the Prunaceae family, Salix sp. and Sambucus nigra , has provided clear evidence of management practices in these taxa. The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the dynamics of performatives, with special focus on normatively charged institutions as legal-political ones, with the help of a case study coming from Roman antiquity: the appointment of Julius Caesar as "perpetual dictator", as it is analyzed by Licandro (2022). That analysis shows both how institutional performatives are established and how they are subject to tensions and changes in their course of application. On that basis, I will make two hypotheses. First, the power of legal-political performatives is (also) grounded in what I will call "symbolic value": a special feature of certain linguistic expressions which is historically related to religious rituals. Second, symbolic value and practical (i.e., means-end) reasoning are not alternative explanations, they are partners both in establishing legal-political performatives and in driving their application through time. This article focuses on artistic and aesthetic practices within the idealist and symbolist movements of the late 19th century in France. It investigates how artists and art critics embraced androgynous imaginaries derived from Greco-Roman antiquity and the Platonic myth, transforming them into tools for social and sexual emancipation and giving rise to a proto-queer vision. An analysis of the art of Alexandre Séon, Odilon Redon, Jeanne Jacquemin, and Léonard Sarluis, in conjunction with the symbolist theories of Joséphin Péladan, Gabriel-Albert Aurier, and Émile Verhaeren, reveals an idealistic pursuit grounded in the union of the masculine and the feminine through the act of creation. Through the examination of artworks, contemporary critical discourse, and the personal correspondence of these art figures, this study posits that the androgyne serves as a heuristic model for a queer art history. The ideal androgyne, as theorized in Freud's psychoanalytic writings, can function as a methodological paradigm in art studies as a tool for visualizing and conceptualizing homosexuality in art. In this study, I argue that Josephus' interpretation of the period of the biblical judges, following the conquest of Canaan and settlement in the land, mirrors Greco-Roman rhetoric that traced the origins of Rome's decline to the middle and late republic. Survey of Greco-Roman writers shows that Josephus modelled his diagnosis of the decline of Israel during the period of the judges on the causes of Roman decline identified by many Greek and Latin writers, these being: (1) influx of foreign wealth; (2) discharge of veterans and turn toward agricultural living; and (3) growth of rural elite estates. Beyond serving as his own inspiration, this literary milieu informed Josephus' elite Greco-Roman audience, thus ensuring that they would read his interpretation of the period of the judges in light of tropes about Roman decline that were popular in their day. This article examines the numerous ancient remedies that include roses and places them in a broader context. It suggests that these medicines' efficacy was partly explained by the association between the flower and the goddess Aphrodite/Venus. Vast amounts of roses were needed in the production of ancient drugs, especially when these included rose oil. This article therefore attempts to shed light on the labour that was involved in growing, transporting, and preparing rose products in antiquity. It aims at finding traces of people who worked with roses. These workers, some of whom were likely enslaved, are usually invisible in the written record, but insight into their working practices can be found on frescos and mosaics. On these artefacts, workers are either presented in their human form or as cupids, the attendant of Venus/Aphrodite. I conclude that the labour involved in producing rose-based medicines depended largely on enslaved people, whose wellbeing suffered for the health of medical consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vitruvius’s De Architectura Libri Decem is a treatise on architecture dating to the onset of the Pax Romana. It covers the design and practice to erect private and public buildings including marine structures. Terrestrial and marine concrete is one specific construction material covered in various sections of this handbook; its durability is proven by nearly two millennia of history, as buildings such as the Pantheon testify. The technology for marine concrete is similar to that of the former except for the mix proportions and water quality used. Furthermore, based on research undertaken as part of the ROMACONS project, the formation of a rare hydrothermal mineral accounts for the durability of marine concrete. This article concludes by (i) outlining good practice in marine concrete technology in Roman antiquity as stated by Vitruvius and (ii) proposing the further research potential of exploring De Architectura from a sustainable design perspective including a comparative reading of Roman architecture and engineering alongside similar contemporary building typologies. James Crossley and Robert Myles's Jesus: A Life in Class Conflict is a considerable accomplishment in its situation of Jesus as a figure inseparable from the material conditions of labor exploitation. The present review discusses two topics that the book touches upon only briefly, but linger under the surface of their analysis: Jesus' treatment of enslaved laborers and utopian social experimentation. This article juxtaposes Jesus with the roughly contemporaneous figure of Spartacus to consider about the availability of social experimentation and the location of slaves within class-based analyses of Roman antiquity. The Diphuès database is an open access research, exchange and dialogue tool devoted to the half-human half-vegetal figures in Roman Antiquity. It is the result of two research projects that have been carried out since 2012 under the aegis of the F.R.S.-FNRS (Fonds de la recherche scientifique de Belgique). From 2024, it will be made available in open access to the international scientific community by the 'Service d'Histoire de l'art et Archéologie de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine' (SHAArAGR) and the 'Centre Informatique de Philosophie & Lettres' (CIPL) of the University of Liège. Diphuès is based on a corpus originally designed as a personal work tool to serve specific research objectives. This tool has undergone several major modifications, in its structure and purpose, so that it can be used to produce new knowledge. Mining is a broad and complex field. The search for and exploitation of minerals is unceasing in many countries worldwide. Before its collapse towards the close of the 20th century, coal mining in the United Kingdom, for instance, which dates back to Roman antiquity, occurred in various regions of the country, such as Northumberland and Durham, North and South Wales, Yorkshire, Kent, and the East and West Midlands. An essential aim of the present paper is to give an overview of the plethora of mining terms in English which have been coined due to progress and advance in this field over time, ranging from terms associated with boring, drilling and extraction, to ventilation, pipelines and hauling. The Oxford English Dictionary Online (Murray et al., 1884–; henceforth referred to as the OED) and specific sources such as Elsevier's Dictionary of Mining and Mineralogy (Dorian, 1993) constitute valuable tools to identify these types of lexical items. "Though classicists have always believed in endings," Elizabeth Cook-Lynn writes in Aurelia, "the real Dakotah storytellers like Aurelia do not." Throughout her 1999 novella collection, Aurelia: A Crow Creek Trilogy, Cook-Lynn enacts a project of literary nationalism. Cook-Lynn also juxtaposes the Dakota topics and literary practices of her narrative against occasional but pointed references to Greek and Roman antiquity and to classicism: the scholarly mode that has enshrined Greek and Roman antiquity in both etiologies and ideals of "Western civilization" for centuries. A superficial reading might suggest that Cook-Lynn's classical invocations implicitly prioritize Western classicism or distract from Aurelia's Dakota literary nationalism. While such invocations do create multiple effects, their primary thrust is to redirect the reader to a Dakota-centered orientation of philosophical-artistic priorities. Ultimately, this examination of Cook-Lynn's classical invocations illuminates in action a provocative and deftly challenging authorial stance that Cook-Lynn identifies with literary greatness in her own criticism. This article explores the ancient testimony that has often been understood to indicate pagan antisemitism among Greeks and Romans in antiquity. It seeks to challenge the common notions that hostility to Jews arose on religious or ideological grounds or that it was rooted in suspicion of, or contempt for, the outsider or that it represented fear of Jewish proselytizing that might threaten pagan institutions. The article seeks to show that the negative comments about Jews found in Greek and Roman writings amount to scorn and derision or simply amused misgivings, but little (if any) antisemitism. In 1863, Emperor Tewodros II of Abyssinia (present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea) took a British consul hostage; five years later, the British sent a punitive expedition. This military expedition continued the brutal tradition of earlier ones and shaped later campaigns in Sudan and West Africa in the 1890s. Typically, a large contingent of non-military personnel accompanied these expeditions and the 1868 expedition to Maqdala was no different. What was unique for Maqdala was the inclusion of a member of staff from the British Museum. We argue that a letter from Charles Thomas Newton, keeper of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, to Sir Roderick Murchison, the president of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), illustrates that the plunder of cultural heritage was planned. We also argue that the plunder did not go to plan. The inclusion of a man from the museum made this expedition unique in the museum's history. The acquisition of these objects through colonial violence constitutes a strong moral reason for their repatriation from the British Museum and the numerous institutions in which they are dispersed. Understanding the planning involved in their plunder illustrates the entanglement of politics and imperialism with scientific and cultural institutions that constituted the backbone of Victorian Britain. Fig-eaters are small passerines of various genus (Sylviidés, Acrocéphalidés et Phylloscopidés); They change their diet in the time of fruits, passing from insectivorous to fructivorous. As a result they get stouter, acquiring a delicious grease which meant they became a target for hunting from Antiquity to the present day resulting in their near extinction. We know a very elaborate, long and precise recipe from Babylon. After the Greeks and Romans, Byzantines and Arabs appreciated and consumed these birds, that were prepared according to various recipes. Nevertheless, in the Arab cultures, two kinds of texts show the interest for those small birds: first, medical and paramedical texts of the hippocratic tradition, and second, texts of cookery books that provide recipes while sometimes quoting physicians. "Hansel and Gretel" begins with the parents' decision to abandon their children. The author argues that the differences in how the children survive their exile reflect the changes in how modern societies conceptualized their organization. An early baroque tale speaks of a contracted civil society and legitimizes sovereign power, while later versions represent Enlightened social subjects capable of emerging from their minority. The motif of abandoned children reaches back to Roman antiquity, where it was linked to mimetic rivalry. The author shows in what ways mimetic rivalry appears in modern fairy tales. This article uses the category of difference—a critical tool used by post-structuralist, postmodernist, and postcolonial theorists—to interrogate Italian Fascist architecture of the late interwar period. I show how architecture for the 1942 Rome World's Fair created an identitarian aesthetic that hybridized rectilinear facades of modernism with arches and columns of Roman antiquity. I argue this aesthetic represented Fascism's resistance to the universalizing impulse of modern industrial society, which Fascists identified with modernist architecture. To counter, planners rendered "irreducible" cultural difference as Fascism's standpoint of resistance to capitalism's abstract and universal materializations. By designating the aesthetic "past-modernist," this work underscores Fascism's claim to simultaneously return to "ethno-cultural origins" and transcend modernism. Past-modernism, though, anticipates postmodernism. The conclusion considers past-modernism alongside recent theories that posit "cultural antecedents" as resistance to capitalism, arguing that Fascism's claim of difference shows the limits of identitarian movements to realize freedom from domination. Within the impressive phenomenon of recovery and humanistic reinterpretation of the ancient cultural heritage, the discovery of archaeological finds and iconographic evidence of ancient Rome aroused the passionate interest of artists, antiquarians and scholars, and exerted an extraordinary impact also on the elaboration of the Renaissance musical imagery. On the ground of the broadly-designed research model, which develops in the musical direction the Warburg Institute’s studies on the ancient models employed by Renaissance artists, examined are the artistic resonances of the Roman gem, so-called “sigillum Neronis” (first century BC), attributed to Dioskourides, showing Apollo, Olympus and Marsyas (in works by Attavante degli Attavanti, Sandro Botticelli, Isaia da Pisa, Giovanni Baldù); compositions showing Muses, based on the late-third-century Sarcophagus of the Muses at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (Marcantonio Raimondi, Filippino Lippi); the Sarcophagus of the Muses at the Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Massimo in Rome (Raffaello Sanzio, Marcantonio Raimondi, Marin Mersenne, Filippo Bonanni, Amico Aspertini); and a group of Bacchic sarcophagi (Baldassarre Peruzzi, Jacopo di Giovanni Battista, Michele di Giovanni da Fiesole, Matteo Balducci). These copies, reworkings, misunderstandings and additions, gave rise to unprecedented musical icons but also to transpositions from the figurative register to the verbal and performative ones and to the assignment of new symbolic and emblematic meanings to musical figures, instruments and myths. This article considers the relationship between John Gibson's neoclassical sculpture The Sleeping Shepherd Boy and Oliver Laric's installations for the 2016 Liverpool Biennial using 3D models and prints of the Shepherd. These bodies of work allow us to think about their similarities in attitude towards imitation, the significance of the "neoclassical" across different historic moments, and the cultures of copying or reproduction. It looks at the reproductive technologies of 3D scanning, printing, CNC milling, and digital remixing alongside historical reproductions such as casts and copies. These offer new potentially disruptive--but not destructive--opportunities within the legacy of neoclassical practices. The intellectual and artistic inheritance of neoclassical sculpture as an imitative practice after Greek and Roman antiquity informs Laric's sculptural work. I draw on Alexander Nagel and Christopher Wood's Anachronic Renaissance (2010) and George Kubler's The Shape of Time (1968) to discuss Laric's modular, large-scale 3D prints, which point towards issues of replacement, imitation, and wholeness. The opensource 3D models he produces as part of his practice are then used by other artists, including Zachary Eastwood-Bloom in his Divine Principles series, and the author, for making research objects. By using the methods of archaeological chemistry—thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction analysis, and Fourier transform infrared measurements, 13 mortar samples from the Roman age and Late Antiquity were investigated. The results of the investigation showed the phase composition and probable raw materials that were used. The defined composition, type, and properties of the mortars prove that the same production technology was used in both the Roman and Late Antiquity. The exponential dependence of temperature of the point of inflection (Tinfl) by mass loss (ML) of calcite decarbonation was found, specifying that the decrease in mortar structure homogeneity and compactness leads to a decrease in calcite decarbonation temperature. All studied samples were defined as non-hydraulic lime mortars without any hygroscopic properties. The samples are of different binder to aggregate (B/A) ratios, as no relation between the B/A ratio and the purpose of mortar use was established. The experimental results related to the geological setting of the area provide additional information about people's knowledge of the environment. The auxiliary Roman castrum of Hoghiz (Braşov county) has stirred the interest of researchers and antiquities enthusiasts since the mid--18th century, being represented in cartographic sources of the period as Alte Schlos Rudera or Pons Vetus. Over time, based on the analysis of tegular material, it is believed that Ala I Asturum, Cohors III Gallorum, Numerus Illyricorum and troops from Legio XIII Gemina were stationed here, making it the most important auxiliary castrum in Eastern Dacia. During surface investigations in 2023, 12 fragments of glass vessels were recovered from the area of the Roman baths adjacent to the castrum. They belong mainly to beakers and cups, prismatic bottles or window panes, as well as a dark-red facetted bead. By analogy, the identified fragments can be dated to the 2nd century AD while the bead is specific to the 4th century AD with good similarities in the area of the Sântana de Mureş -- Cerneahov culture. There are abundant examples of negative assessments of cultic honors to Roman emperors by nineteenth- and twentieth-century researchers. In the minds of historians raised in modern societies, in which monotheistic Abrahamic religions usually reign supreme, this is a completely understandable a priori approach; nevertheless, it hinders a correct understanding of Roman society in antiquity. This paper examines the need to provide a complex answer to the question of whether the inhabitants of the Roman world really believed in the divinity of their rulers. A complex answer to the question can only emerge from a historical contextualization of the phenomenon under analysis, an examination of the imperial cult within the wider changes that were taking place in Roman religion at the time, and application of the necessary empathetic approach. The aim of the text entitled: Night Combat in Late Antiquity in the Light of Roman Military Treatises is to present the theory and practice of night combat in the 6th century. Based on source analysis (military treatises - mainly Strategicon, and Late Roman and Byzantine historiography), the author presented the theory and practice of night fighting. Apart from classical methods of analysis, the psychology of the battlefield was also used. This gives us a complete picture of how Byzantines use the night as an advantage on the battlefield. Hematidrosis constitutes a rare imposing phenomenon encountered millennia ago. It involves the plexus of small, mostly superficial arteries, veins and sweat glands of various parts of the human body. Bloody sweat implies skin pathology. It has been connected to psychogenic impairment and lacks a clear etiology. The present study conducted a historical review using the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae®, Gallica-BNF and Google Books databases. The year 1900 was the mark for full-text works to be included. A second review of the modern literature, over the last 20 years, was carried out using the PubMed/MedLine database. In both eras, the terms h[a]emat[h]idrosis, diapedesis, sudor sanguineus, plus various others vocables of Hellenic and Latin origin, were used as key words. Cases of persons suffering hematidrosis during stigmata as partly connected to this study were surveyed and discussed separately. References were obtained from the classical Greece, late Hellenic antiquity and Roman era. A number of 70 cases were registered from the Renaissance to 1900, and 44 cases between 2007 and 2022. The later time interval is considered as the selection of references of all time, while the 1870 to 1884 interval followed. Differences in sex were observed (males, 60.6%; and females, 39.4%; vs. males, 25.6%; and females, 74.4%). The scalp, forehead, face, trunk, arms and legs were the most common areas of appearance in both time intervals. The eyes and ears were the most common areas of appearance in the modern era. As regards the limitations of the present review, it should be emphasized that not all historical cases were available for survey. Stigmata were studied independently. Records in etiology hypothesis, pathological description and the manifestation of a cluster of post-triggering effects described were similar over time. The modern way of life, major stressful events, a fear of death, hematological disorders, vessel derangements and deep faith may trigger hematidrosis. This spectacular acute event stimulates alertness in patients, family, caregivers and physicians, and may lead to social isolation and unnecessary diagnostic and/or therapeutic interventions. The present narrative review aimed to connect science with history and religion, promote contemplation among health professionals and highlight a medical peculiarity. During excavations at the Hellenistic-Roman port of Berenike (on the Red Sea coast of Egypt) in the winter of 2019, work in the so-called Northern Complex documented a religious space from the Late Roman period. The excavation of a portion of this space recorded material that, together with the architecture, suggests a ritual function associated with a falcon cult. This study examines the features of this edifice and the interpretation of the religious materials found in it and proposes a possible relationship with the Blemmyan population who lived in Berenike between the fourth and sixth centuries CE. This article probes the various stakes of the rise of classical studies as a discipline in contemporary China, taking as a case in point Liu Xiaofeng's shifting intellectual and political allegiances in his transition from a scholar of liberalist persuasion during the 1990s to a much decried advocate of the Mao cult over the past two decades. Outlining the reinvention of the "classics" as an inherently comparative new discipline that incorporates both Greek and Roman antiquity and ancient Chinese texts, the article argues that a consistent driving force behind the rise of classical scholarship is an attempt on the intellectuals' part to amend cultural and intellectual ruptures that had ensued from political turmoil during the twentieth century from the modernizing May Fourth Movement to the Cultural Revolution. This categorical imperative of "making whole," however, has assumed radically different forms, leading to the seeming discrepancy between Liu's earlier "liberalist" stance to a more recent willingness to comply with the regime. In particular, through examining Liu Xiaofeng's esoteric rhetoric in his reading of the Confucian scholar Xiong Shili, the article demonstrates that the will to cultural preservation that underlies Liu's advocacy of classical scholarship eventually translates into an attempt to depoliticize philosophy and philology and hence a proneness to complicity with state power. Perjury – swearing to a false statement or not fulfilling a promissory oath – attracted universal condemnation in Antiquity, as well as promises of harsh divine retribution. Human responses to perjury, however, varied among the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean. This article surveys these responses, locates their cultural contexts, and explains them by examining perjury as an affront to honour. Legal penalties, expiation rituals, and other social responses highlight the various ways that society reifies, performs, and transforms the changing social status of the perjurer. This article examines a 2018 exhibition of William Kentridge's work, entitled O Sentimental Machine , at the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung in Frankfurt. This exhibition placed the South African artist's work in confrontation with the museum's collections, which offer an overview of sculpture from antiquity to early modernity. The exhibition draws together themes explored in Kentridge's sustained engagement with Greek and Roman antiquity: critiques of triumphant narratives of history; questions of memorialization and ruination; and the probing of narratives of enlightenment, which begin with Plato's allegory of the cave (Rep. 514a–521b). The first half of the article considers Kentridge's dialogues with Greek and Roman antiquity in his wider works before turning to his Triumphs and Laments (2016), a series of images telling the story of Rome, imprinted on the embankment walls of the Tiber. The second half focuses on O Sentimental Machine , paying particular attention to The Refusal of Time , a piece presented at the exhibition. The article argues that this piece offers a compelling challenge to narratives of 'civilisation', at the centre of which lie hegemonic notions of time, underpinned by constructions of the classical tradition. In 1911, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Italy, a grand exhibition of Roman antiquities was hosted at the Baths of Diocletian in Rome. Rodolfo Lanciani, main agent behind the organization of this Mostra Archeologica, opted for exhibiting mainly reproductions of ancient monuments from the far-flung regions that once formed the Roman Empire. The aim was to reconstruct a coherent image of ancient Roman culture, directed towards the celebration of both the glorious Roman Empire and the expanding Italian one. By examining the selection of material exhibited and its display, this paper will analyse how early twentieth-century visions of the Roman past and the Italian present were reflected in the Mostra Archeologica. This analysis sheds light on the impact of these ideas and the nationalistic biases they introduced into the formulation of modern notions of Roman provincial art and archaeology. The contribution intends to present some figures of strong women in the time of the Antiquity Saints Pudentiana and Praexedes, daughters of Senator Pudente whom the tradition identifies among the first people converted in Rome by the apostle Paul. Pudente owned a villa whose remains are nine meters below the current basilica (for centuries it was believed that this was the oldest Christian church in Rome) in which the persecuted Christians hid, according to some sources even the apostle Peter. When Pudente suffered martyrdom, Praxedes and Pudentiana, with the consent of Pope Pius I, built in 142/145 c.a. a baptistery to baptize new Christians. Praxedes and Pudentiana also suffered martyrdom during the persecutions of Antonino Pio. When Pudentiana died, Praxedes used her family's patrimony to build a church "sub titulo Praxedes". She hid many persecuted Christians, when they were discovered and martyred, she collected her bodies to bury them in the cemetery of Priscilla on the Via Salaria, where she too was buried together with her sister and her father. In our opinion, the proximity of the Basilica of Santa Pudentiana and one of the Roman synagogues (Oratorio Castro) as a symbol of the coexistence of religions is important for our project of strong women in times of crisis, which we will try to demonstrate with our research. The Italian occupation of Libya was preceded by an intense exploration of the territory then under the control of the Ottoman Empire. These geographers, travelers, anthropologists, and archaeologists founded an Italian colonial «professionalism» as they gradually penetrated inland, either in collaboration or in competition with similar European and American missions. These inland excursions exposed the visitors to the new and energetic Senussa brotherhood, whose religious livelihoods included political and military characteristics. Archaeologists also began fomenting conflict on the ideological level by exposing the rich deposits of Greek- Roman antiquity present in Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. The myth of the Mare nostrum was thus reborn as the Italian right to control the Eastern Mediterranean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
