3. Generic design of Chinese remaindering schemes

Abstract

We propose a generic design for Chinese remainder algorithms. A Chinese remainder computation consists in reconstructing an integer value from its residues modulo non coprime integers. We also propose an efficient linear data structure, a radix ladder, for the intermediate storage and computations. Our design is structured into three main modules: a black box residue computation in charge of computing each residue; a Chinese remaindering controller in charge of launching the computation and of the termination decision; an integer builder in charge of the reconstruction computation. We then show that this design enables many different forms of Chinese remaindering (e.g. deterministic, early terminated, distributed, etc.), easy comparisons between these forms and e.g. user-transparent parallelism at different parallel grains., Comment: International Symposium on Parallel Symbolic Computation, Grenoble : France (2010)

Abstract

Les sociétés anciennes vivaient sous la menace de la précarité, du chômage, des crises et des épidémies ; mais elles vivaient aussi le retour des famines et les rues des villes envahies de mendiants criant à la rage de la faim. Comment les hommes ont-ils vécu ces misères en France au Moyen Âge et à la Renaissance ? Pour mener l’enquête, Jean-Louis Roch traque, recense et décrypte leurs mots : les lieux communs, les proverbes, et l’expression des sentiments, comme la honte ou la pitié. Il explore, à côté des archives, la littérature et en particulier le théâtre à destination populaire, les farces et les Mystères. Ce faisant, il multiplie les points de vue sur ces gueux sans souci, sans six sous : le travail précaire, l’obsession de la faim et de la ruse, la fraude et la violence, les mille et une stratégies de survie et les rêves de festins plantureux et du pays de Cocagne. Il raconte l’ambivalence du rapport aux pauvres, qui font rire au théâtre et que l’on chasse dans la rue : « truand », « maraud », « bélître », « gueux » ; des termes à l’étymologie mystérieuse. En détaillant le vocabulaire de la misère à la fin du Moyen Âge, c’est l’ensemble de l’imaginaire social des humbles et un pan entier de la culture populaire qui se découvrent chemin faisant. Les mots des pauvres témoignent d’une très ancienne conception magique du monde, qui allait s’effacer lors de son désenchantement. Cela valait la peine d’aller voir à la fois du côté de la langue et du côté de l’histoire.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to introduce general techniques in order to optimize the parallel execution time of sorting on a distributed architectures with processors of various speeds. Such an application requires a partitioning step. For uniformly related processors (processors speeds are related by a constant factor), we develop a constant time technique for mastering processor load and execution time in an heterogeneous environment and also a technique to deal with unknown cost functions. For non uniformly related processors, we use a technique based on dynamic programming. Most of the time, the solutions are in O(p) (p is the number of processors), independent of the problem size n. Consequently, there is a small overhead regarding the problem we deal with but it is inherently limited by the knowing of time complexity of the portion of code following the partitioning.

Abstract

La mélancolie à la fin du Moyen Âge et à la Renaissance n’a pas été seulement le spleen des princes et des poètes. Elle a été aussi une grave maladie, qui menait parfois au suicide. Or les pauvres ont leur mélancolie. La littérature à destination populaire permet d’approcher cette mélancolie des pauvres, d’en démonter le mécanisme et d’en éclairer l’originalité face aux autres mélancolies. At the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, melancholy has not only been the spleen of the princes and the poets. It has been a severe disease, that has led sometimes to suicide. The poor people themselves have their own melancholy. Popular litterature and theater in particular help us understand this melancholy of the poor better, take apart its mechanism and see its originality compared to others melancholies.

Abstract

Long version of the SECRYPT 2020 accepted article; International audience; Linux implementation of Full Disk Encryption (FDE) relies on the dm-crypt kernel module, and is based on the XTS-AES encryption mode. However, XTS-AES is complex and can quickly become a performance bottleneck. Therefore we explore the use of cryptographic co-processors to efficiently implement the XTS-AES mode in Linux. We consider two Atmel boards that feature different cryptographic co-processors: the XTS-AES mode is completely integrated on the recent SAMA5D2 board but not on the SAMA5D3 board. We first analyze three XTS-AES implementations: a pure software implementation, an implementation that leverages the XTS-AES co-processor, and an intermediate solution. This work leads us to propose an optimization of dm-crypt, the extended request mode, that enables to encrypt/decrypt a full 4kB page at once instead of issuing eight consecutive 512 bytes requests as in the current implementation. We show that major performance gains are possible with this optimization, a SAMA5D3 board reaching the performance of a SAMA5D2 board where XTS-AES operations are totally offloaded to the dedicated cryptographic co-processor, while remaining fully compatible with the standard. Finally, we explain why bad design choices prevent this optimization to be applied to the new SAMA5D2 board and derive recommendations for future co-processor designs.
