Abstract

Radiography is an effective method for nondestructive inspection of thick metal components. However, complete diagnosis of internal defects is a difficult task that needs reliable computer assistance. In particular, fully 3-D reconstruction would be a very valuable tool for the expert, but it is not so clear whether digitized radiographs can be made suitable for reconstruction. We show that this is indeed the case by studying the radiographic image formation process in the context of primary loop piping inspection in pressurized water nuclear reactors. In a more general way, our findings apply to the testing of thick metal pecimens with simple, known geometry. Based on justified simplifications and approximations, we demonstrate that it is possible to process the raw data to closely fit the conventional line-integral projection model. More specifically, we provide a full processing procedure that includes (i) a criterion for subsampling the data without loss of pertinent information, (ii) a novel field-flattening algorithm, and (iii) a calibration method that requires minimal knowledge about the data acquisition parameters. The actual 3-D reconstruction issue is addressed in another paper [1] whose results further validate the present work. International audience; L’accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC), est un problème majeur de santé public qui représente la 3ième cause de mortalité dans les pays industrialisés. Il est nécessaire d’améliorer l’identification des patients éligibles à différentes thérapies et à l’évaluation du ratio risquebénéfice. Dans ce contexte, l’imagerie (3D+temps) par résonance magnétique de perfusion, pendant laquelle on enregistre en chaque voxel la réponse des tissus au passage d’un agent de contraste de susceptibilité magnétique, permet l’évaluation sur des bases hémodynamiques des tissus à risques. Toutefois, le pipeline associant à la fois la gestion et le traitement de ces données sur des cohortes de patients est complexe et nécessite encore des développements, comme l’illustre cette communication qui présente des outils logiciels d’introduction récente dans ce contexte (1-8).1. Abstract

National audience; Perfusion MRI is a reference clinical routine examination for the diagnosis of cerebral ischemia. In order to test and validate posttreatment algorithm for MRI perfusion sequences by the means of simulation, we need to use realistic noise models. We discuss the validity of a gaussian approximation of the log-rician distribution of the MRI data, first via a low-level statistic approach, then via the extraction of high-level information with respect to the processing pipeline, such as the extraction of the cerebral blood flow; L’IRM de perfusion est un examen de référence en routine clinique pour le diagnostic de l’ischémie cérébrale. Pour tester et valider par simulation les algorithmes de post-traitement sur cette séquence, il est nécessaire de disposer de modèles de bruit réalistes. Nous discutons de la validité d’une approximation gaussienne de la distribution log-ricienne des données IRM via une approche statistique de bas niveau puis via l’extraction d’information de haut niveau dans la chaîne de traitement, telle que celle du flux sanguin cérébral.

Abstract

This work deals with 2D sparse array probes for 3D ultrasound imaging where an optimization of their piezoelectric elements positions is needed. Indeed the fully sampled version of 2D array probes involves several thousands of active elements which are too many to be driven by current ultrasound scanners. Our work aims at optimizing the acoustic radiation of a 256 elements 2D array probe. The integration of a realistic acoustic simulation inside the simulated annealing optimization algorithm and a multi-depth pressure field consideration are the two main innovative aspects of our approach., Ce travail porte sur l'optimisation du positionnement d'un nombre réduit d'éléments piézoélectriques d'une sonde échographique matricielle utilisée pour l'imagerie ultrasonore 3D. En effet ce type de sonde comporte en général plusieurs milliers d'éléments dans sa version pleinement peuplée ce qui représente un nombre bien trop important pour être piloté par les échographes actuels. Notre travail cherche donc à optimiser le rayonnement d'une sonde matricielle comportant 256 éléments. L'originalité de notre approche réside dans l'intégration de la simulation acoustique dans un algorithme d'optimisation par recuit simulé en tenant compte des caractéristiques du champ de pression à plusieurs profondeurs et non uniquement à la distance focale.

49. Globally Convergent Edge-preserving Reconstruction with Contour-line Smoothing

Abstract

The standard approach to image reconstruction is to stabilize the problem by including an edge-preserving roughness penalty in addition to faithfulness to the data. However, this methodology produces noisy object boundaries and creates a staircase effect. The existing attempts to favor the formation of smooth contour lines take the edge field explicitly into account; they either are computationally expensive or produce disappointing results. In this paper, we propose to incorporate the smoothness of the edge field in an implicit way by means of an additional penalty term defined in the wavelet domain. We also derive an efficient half-quadratic algorithm to solve the resulting optimization problem, including the case when the data fidelity term is non-quadratic and the cost function is nonconvex. Numerical experiments show that our technique preserves edge sharpness while smoothing contour lines; it produces visually pleasing reconstructions which are quantitatively better than those obtained without wavelet-domain constraints., {"references":["J.
