This study discusses 1) the national legislative frameworks, terminologies, and criteria for the recognition of natural mineral waters and thermal waters in selected European countries (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Spain), and 2) it provides a first extensive multi-national overview of hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical characteristics of numerous water sources from those regions. Študija razpravlja o: 1) nacionalnih zakonodajnih okvirjih, izrazoslovju in kriterijih za priznavanje naravnih mineralnih in termalnih voda v izbranih evropskih državah (Avstrija, Bosna in Hercegovina, Danska, Francija, Madžarska, Islandija, Italija, Litva, Poljska, Portugalska, Romunija, Srbija, Slovenia in Španija), ter 2) predstavlja prvi pregledni več-nacionalni pregled hidrogeoloških in hidrogeokemijskih značilnostih številnih vodnih virov v teh regijah.

Transboundary groundwater resources are very important sources of water for different uses and represent a significant role in some region, although monitoring and management are an major issue. The Bregana – Obrežje (Slovenia) / Sava – Samobor (Croatia) aquifers were identified by the International Network of Water-Environment Centres for the Balkans (INWEB) inventory as transboundary aquifers. The main goal is to set up a cooperative framework so that institutions from both sides can effectively work together and ensure effective monitoring and management of transboundary aquifers.

The DARLINGe project supports enhanced and efficient use of geothermal energy in the wider area as the TRANSENERGY (Rman et al., 2015). Utilization data on thermal water was collected from 6 countries (Rman et al., 2017) where selection criteria were: i) Outflow water temperature of 30 °C and above, ii) Active production or reinjection of thermal water, even if no exploitation permit is granted, iii) Inactive wells are included if they have an exploitation permit or belong to a national monitoring network.

The Slovenian Geological Congress offers our leading geologists a celebration of their research achievements in the last four years. It is a great opportunity to exchange experience internationally also, and this bilaterally organized field trip offers just that, an opportunity for many international informal contacts. The field trip is organized as a collaboration of many institutions: the Slovenian Geological Society, the Geological Survey of Slovenia, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, the Slovenian Committee of the International Association of Hydrogeologists, the Croatian Geological Society and the Croatian Geological Survey. It also has the honnor to form a part of the annual assembly of the Commission on Mineral and Thermal Water of IAH of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (CMTW-IAH). Most of the field trip is perfomed in the west part of the extensive Pannonian basin where in the past hydrocarbon industry used to play an important role. Nowadays, many of these sites are depleted, and thermal and mineral water production is economically and turistically important in both countries, Slovenia and Croatia

The main aims of this report are to: Identify sites where geothermal objects produce thermal waters with 30 °C and above. In other words, proven regions with high geothermal potential which may help to reduce geological risk of new investments, Provide a comparison on current utilization practice among countries and reservoirs, Identify how different thermal waters are utilized with emphasis on geothermal heat production, Provide an inventory of existing databases on exploitation of geothermal objects., DARLINGe - Interreg - Danube Transnational Programme

Forty-five adults, which do professionally not deal with geology or groundwaters, filled a voluntary questionnaire on groundwater dynamics in Slovenia. The survey pointed out that about a fifth to a quarter of them has a weak knowledge on this topic. Groundwater occurrence, production and pollution are quite well known, excluding a widely spread opinion on subsurface water veins and underground rivers and lakes (which are true only for karstic aquifers), but groundwater protection is much less known. It has turned out that the answers often base on the experience of the interviewee rather than on an understanding of a regional groundwater dynamics. Therefore, we believe that it is worth to start a systematic education on groundwaters not only for geologists but also for general public. The VO-KA company from Ljubljana has given an incentive for development of an educational sand-box model of the Ljubljansko polje aquifer, which will be used to spread knowledge on ground- and drinking water. The model of an inhomogeneous and anisotropic intergranular aquifer has predominately a two-dimensional water flow. It enables visualisation of natural features and anthropogenic on the quantity and quality state of the stored groundwater. It can be used to explain hydrogeological phenomena on various levels of knowledge, from simple visualisation to more complicated mathematical descriptions.
