Cleopatra VII, who struggle for the throne with her brother Ptolemy XIII after the death of Ptolemy XII, went on a cruise on the Nile River with her Roman ally Caesar, with whom she had personal and political rapprochement, immediately after the Battle of Alexandria, which emerged as a civil war. The couple visited the settlements, mineral resources, quarries, and trade centers in Upper Egypt and ended the cruise before reaching Aethiopia. The fact that the cruise, which is not mentioned in contemporary sources, is mentioned in the works of non-contemporary authors such as Suetonius, Appian, Athenaeus and Lucan has led to controversy, and this situation has brought along the views that defend/doubt that the cruise took place. The main focus of this study is the purpose, scope and political and strategic objectives, especially the discussions about the Nile cruise. The study, which evaluates archaeological data, literary sources and modern views together, reveals that the cruise, which we have no information about because it is not included in contemporary ancient sources, was a discovery journey with political goals rather than a romantic honeymoon trip, and that it included more than what is described in ancient sources. In the article the authors presented the results of associativeessayistic quasi-experiment, which revealed the modalities of perception, reflection and reception of students' reading of postmodern novels of the famous Ukrainian writer Andrukhovych "The Recreation" (2017), "The Perversion" (1996) and "Moscoviada" (2000). The relevance of the article is determined by the lack of methods for diagnosing professional and amateur reader's reflection in Ukraine and Western Europe. The relevance of the article lies not only in the popularity of Andruchovych's work in Europe (2022 received the Heine Prize) but also in the lack of methods and strategies for forming and monitoring reading competence in the reception of a postmodern work. From the point of view of readerly intertextual communication, Andrukhovych's novels (1996; 2000; 2017) are potentially open to many interpretive strategies. The main reason for this is their being on the verge of postmodernist and new realist paradigms, which implies distancing from the accumulation of citations and the practice of using intertext according to a certain extraliterary intention. Consequently, the purpose of the article is to identify the precedent texts, that form a system of reader's absentee communication when reading the novels of Andrukhovych (1996; 2000; 2017). In order to achieve the goal, the study applied a comprehensive approach. In the article the authors proved the relevance of the phenomena of the town and river timeline and travel timeline in the perception of the professional reader; demonstrated that the nearest textual coincidence of urban chronotopes of novels by Andrukhovych (1996; 2000; 2017) is work by Pidmohylnyi (2008), Gogol (2022) and others. The main of these coincidences is the threefold structure of the city and the pathos of the romantic line. The main conclusion of the article is the orientation of the vector of intertextual interaction in the novel towards the representation of the eternal archetype of the cultural hero, on whom the reader projects his or her Ego. The international relevance of the article is determined by the wide popularity of Andrukhovych's works in Europe and the recent receipt of the Heine Prize (2022). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) predominantly centers learning around individual goal setting and experiences and has not traditionally elevated Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS). Purpose: This research focuses on understanding how student learning and inquiry is affected through OAE that emphasizes the importance of IKS as a starting point for environmental and experiential data collection. Methodology/Approach: Over the course of two multi-day river trips on Idaho's Salmon River during the summer of 2023, 30 incoming university students encountered an Adventure Learning (AL) educational framework centered around IKS. Students used citizen science methods to collect environmental and experiential data to be shared digitally using GIS applications prior to oncampus learning. Web-based surveys will be sent to assess learning impacts. Results will be analyzed for changes in appreciation and awareness of IKS. Conclusions: We anticipate that the data will demonstrate an appreciation and awareness of other ways of knowing within OAE that decenters a Western epistemic ideal of goal driven knowledge production and elevates IKS as a recognized and respected approach to knowledge production. Implications: Incorporating a hybrid environment for incoming university students to address personal knowledge production in context to IKS will promote various decolonizing projects within higher education through shifting student inquiry. Background Early in the pandemic, cruise travel exacerbated the global spread of SARS-CoV-2. We report epidemiologic and molecular findings from an investigation of a cluster of travellers with confirmed COVID-19 returning to the USA from Nile River cruises in Egypt. Methods State health departments reported data on real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-19 cases with a history of Nile River cruise travel during February–March 2020 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Demographic and epidemiologic data were collected through routine surveillance channels. Sequences were obtained either from state health departments or from the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Flu Data (GISAID). We conducted descriptive analyses of epidemiologic data and explored phylogenetic relationships between sequences. Results We identified 149 Nile River cruise travellers with confirmed COVID-19 who returned to 67 different US counties in 27 states: among those with complete data, 4.7% (6/128) died and 28.1% (38/135) were hospitalized. These individuals travelled on 20 different Nile River cruise voyages (12 unique vessels). Fifteen community transmission events were identified in four states, with 73.3% (11/15) of these occurring in Wisconsin (as the result of a more detailed contact investigation in that state). Phylogenetic analyses supported the hypothesis that travellers were most likely infected in Egypt, with most sequences in Nextstrain clade 20A 93% (87/94). We observed genetic clustering by Nile River cruise voyage and vessel. Conclusions Nile River cruise travellers with COVID-19 introduced SARS-CoV-2 over a very large geographic range, facilitating transmission across the USA early in the pandemic. Travellers who participate in cruises, even on small river vessels as investigated in this study, are at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Mothers and daughters and sons, the effect of being a mother and the process of becoming one or not being one are widely recognized narratives in literature, film and culture in general. This article traces the Western feminist agendas regarding the experience of motherhood/maternity in order to arrive at the concept of parenthood, to then enter into a dialogue with the novel Esta herida llena de peces (2021) by Colombian writer Lorena Salazar Masso. In it, two mothers who share the same child travel together by river in the midst of a conflict that overwhelms the inhabitants of the Colombian Pacific region, embracing a permanent state of transit and readjustment as the only way to live. Current studies on liminality will serve as the fabric to find those spaces of the novel that link its characters-they/mothers and the Atrato river with the reformulation of social and cultural forces/values. We investigated a large outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infections among passengers and crew members (60 cases in 132 persons) on a cruise ship sailing for 7 days on rivers in the Netherlands. Whole-genome analyses suggested a single or limited number of viral introductions consistent with the epidemiologic course of infections. Although some precautionary measures were taken, no social distancing was exercised, and air circulation and ventilation were suboptimal. The most plausible explanation for introduction of the virus is by persons (crew members and 2 passengers) infected during a previous cruise, in which a case of COVID-19 had occurred. The crew was insufficiently prepared on how to handle the situation, and efforts to contact public health authorities was inadequate. We recommend installing clear handling protocols, direct contacts with public health organizations, training of crew members to recognize outbreaks, and awareness of air quality on river-cruise ships, as is customary for most seafaring cruises. Since 2013, romantic Rhine cruises gained immense popularity in Europe. However, these tourism activities also involve the generation of large amounts of waste. As rivers contribute significantly to the plastic waste influx in the marine environment, it is essential that river cruise companies cope with plastics in an environmentally-safe way. In this contribution, we try to overcome knowledge gaps regarding both the plastic practices of river cruise companies and the policies on cruise tourism and environmental pollution. We adopt a multiple-case study approach and use the Social Practice Theory to analyse the companies' practices and challenges. Furthermore, we combine this with the analytical approaches of the Policy Arrangements and Synoptic Governance to explore the policies for environmental protection and tourism. The results show that, overall, river cruise companies have an eco-friendly approach to plastic waste management. However, dealing with plastics in the freshwater environment is not sufficiently rooted in the above policies: river cruise companies face important omissions in policies and facilities, resulting in plastic emissions in the river. Following the results, we formulate recommendations to support sustainable waste management routines onboard and to improve waste reception facilities onshore to protect the aquatic environment. As part of a larger research program examining the impacts of nature-based experiences on veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder, this study focused on changes in their depression and meaning in life after participation in four-day group river rafting trips. These group trips allowed for a sense of community among participants with similar life experiences during river rafting, camping, and other trip activities. Results showed that there were statistically significant improvements over time for both depression scores and meaning in life scores. Results also indicated a weak statistically significant, negative association between depression and presence of meaning in life. The study's results are useful for clinical practitioners who may be considering nature-based programs for their clients, as well as researchers seeking to better understand the psychological health benefits of group, nature-based recreation. Women are an active, if often low-key, presence in Whistler's Thames images, from ghostly figures of models and fashionable strolling women to the small traders who populated the streets near his home in Chelsea. Women shopped for their families; they worked outside the home as servants, nursemaids, shop assistants, and in family trades. They travelled along the river daily and criss-crossed its banks in a changing cityscape in which new spaces for leisure were being opened up. They sought a living in a night-time world of entertainment venues like Vauxhall Gardens and Cremorne that could lead to exploitation, disease, and an early grave. This world beyond Whistler's Chelsea homes, overseen during the 1860s by his model and partner, Joanna Hiffernan (and by his mother, Anna Whistler for a time), is often overlooked. Moreover, Whistler's suggestion that the presence of tiny, anonymised female figures in works like Variations in Pink and Grey: Chelsea and Cremorne Gardens, No. 2 was merely about colour and establishing a balance of decorative elements invites fresh analysis. This essay takes as its starting point women's presences in Whistler's riverside home and family circle before venturing outdoors to explore the world they inhabited along the Thames at Chelsea. It considers such questions as: how did women experience the contemporary redevelopment of the river? How did they occupy its adjacent streets and public spaces? Drawing upon examples of Whistler's Thames subjects from the 1870s and the work of chroniclers of social change like Chelsea photographer James Hedderly (1815--1885), it examines the world of women along the river in the context of visual, literary, and socio-economic discourses of the period. It seeks to give voice to their presence beneath the quiet surface of Whistler's images and how, as "involuntary neighbours", they made sense of the watery, arterial world of London's celebrated river.
