Abstract

Community colleges play a key role in driving talent development in the United States, producing workers with the kinds of training that employers need while enhancing economic mobility for students. There has been a push among policymakers at the federal and state levels to hold community colleges accountable for the employment outcomes of their students, with funding and legislation that endorses models that strengthen college partnerships with employers. In this report, the authors systemically examine the type of career services and college-employer partnership practices in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields across three states -- California, Ohio, and Texas -- and a sample of community colleges that operate within them. In addition, the authors investigate the challenges that these colleges face in facilitating student employment and the ways in which state policies may have influenced practice. They reviewed state policies and collected interview data from 134 participants, including state and system leaders, college leaders, program heads and faculty, career service leaders and staff, and employers.

Abstract

La investigación tiene por objetivo general contribuir, mediante la realización de un análisis de razonabilidad, al entendimiento de la regla de vigencia que debe asociarse al certificado de ITSE. La metodología de este trabajo es cualitativa, entendida como aquella que se basa en el análisis de datos no numéricos y permite una amplitud de resultados. Esta metodología fue elegida por la riqueza interpretativa con la que cuenta —al permitir el análisis de hallazgos a través de diferentes puntos de vista— y la gran flexibilidad que proporciona el posibilitar la interacción constante entre la experiencia, la acción y la realidad.

Abstract

En la enseñanza universitaria, la impartición de la docencia se ha caracterizado durante mucho tiempo por aulas de gran tamaño donde el profesor o profesora explica un temario o expone un tema delante de un gran número de alumnos. Clases magistrales que llevaban toda la carga docente con un marcado carácter unidireccional, donde la comunicación sólo se realiza en un sentido: del profesor al alumno. En las últimas décadas, con el objetivo de adaptarse a los nuevos desafíos y a la necesidad de progresar, la Universidad ha ido introduciendo cambios muy diversos, creando clases prácticas con un menor número de estudiantes, principalmente debido a la entrada en vigor de las adaptaciones al Espacio de Educación Superior Europeo.Junto con estas clases, al alumno también se le ofrece acceso a los contenidos universitarios, donde se incluye un apoyo de bibliografía al que los estudiantes pueden acceder, pero que suelen reservar al momento de estudiar para el examen final. Una vez que finalizan las clases de la materia, gran parte de las asignaturas emplean una única prueba de carácter escrito para evaluar los conocimientos adquiridos. Fruto de esta metodología, el profesor se mantiene como figura que explica y evalúa, mientras que el estudiante concentra su atención, en ocasiones de forma exclusiva, en estudiar de cara a superar el examen final.

In this fascinating book Monica Rico explores the myth of the American West in the nineteenth century as a place for men to assert their masculinity by “roughing it” in the wilderness and reveals how this myth played out in a transatlantic context. Rico uncovers the networks of elite men—British and American—who circulated between the West and the metropoles of London and New York.Each chapter tells the story of an individual who, by traveling these transatlantic paths, sought to resolve anxieties about class, gender, and empire in an era of profound economic and social transformation. All of the men Rico discusses—from the well known, including Theodore Roosevelt and Buffalo Bill Cody, to the comparatively obscure, such as English cattle rancher Moreton Frewen—envisioned the American West as a global space into which redemptive narratives of heroic upper-class masculinity could be written.
