Percutaneous thermal ablation is a minimally-invasive treatment option for renal cancer. To treat larger tumours, multiple overlapping ablations zones are required. Arrangements with a low number of ablation zones but coverage of the whole tumour volume are challenging to find for physicians. In this work, an open-source software tool with a new planning approach based on the automatic selection from a large number of randomized geometrical arrangements is presented. Two uncertainty parameters are introduced to account for tissue shrinking and tolerance of non-ablated tumour volume. For seven clinical renal T1a, T1b and T2a tumours, ablation plans were proposed by the software. The standard interpretation of the phase diagram of type-II superconductors was developed in 1960s and has since been considered a well-established part of classical superconductivity. However, upon closer examination a number of fundamental issues arise that leads one to question this standard picture. To address these issues we studied equilibrium properties of niobium samples near and above the upper critical field Hc2 in parallel and perpendicular magnetic fields. The samples investigated were very high quality films and single crystal discs with the Ginzburg-Landau parameters 0.8 and 1.3, respectively. A range of complementary measurements have been performed, which include dc magnetometry, electrical transport, muSR spectroscopy and scanning Hall-probe microscopy. Contrarily to the standard scenario, we observed that a superconducting phase is present in the sample bulk above Hc2 and the field Hc3 is the same in both parallel and perpendicular fields. Our findings suggest that above Hc2 the superconducting phase forms filaments parallel to the field regardless on the field orientation. Near Hc2 the filaments preserve the hexagonal structure of the preceding vortex lattice of the mixed state and the filament density continuously falls to zero at Hc3. Variability is one of the extreme observational properties of BL Lacertae objects. AO 0235+164 is a well studied BL Lac through the whole electro-magnetic wavebands. In the present work, we show its optical R band photometric observations carried out during the period of Nov, 2006 to Dec. 2012 using the Ap6E CCD camera attached to the primary focus of the $\rm 70-cm$ meniscus telescope at Abastumani Observatory, Georgia. It shows a large variation of $\Delta R$ = 4.88 mag (14.19 - 19.07 mag) and a short time scale of $\Delta T_v$ = 73.5 min during our monitoring period. During the period of Dec. 2006 to Nov. 2009, we made radio observations of the source using the 25-m radio telescope at Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. When a discrete correlation function (DCF) is adopted to the optical and radio observations, we found that the optical variation leads the radio variation by 23.2$\pm$12.9 days., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Equilibrium magnetic properties of the mixed state in type-II superconductors were measured with high purity bulk and film niobium samples in parallel and perpendicular magnetic fields using dc magnetometry and scanning Hall-probe microscopy. Equilibrium magnetization data for the perpendicular geometry were obtained for the first time. It was found that none of the existing theories is consistent with these new data. To address this problem, a theoretical model is developed and experimentally validated. The new model describes the mixed state in an averaged limit, i.e. %without detailing the samples' magnetic structure and therefore ignoring interactions between vortices. It is quantitatively consistent with the data obtained in a perpendicular field and provides new insights on properties of vortices. % and the entire mixed state. At low values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, the model converts to that of Peierls and London for the intermediate state in type-I superconductors. It is shown that description of the vortex matter in superconductors in terms of a 2D gas is more appropriate than the frequently used crystal- and glass-like scenarios., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The optical identification of large number of X-ray sources such as those from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey is challenging with conventional spectroscopic follow-up observations. We investigate two ROSAT All-Sky Survey fields of size 10 * 10 degrees each, one at galactic latitude b = 83 deg (Com), the other at b = -5 deg (Sge), in order to optically identify the majority of sources. We used optical variability, among other more standard methods, as a means of identifying a large number of ROSAT All-Sky Survey sources. All objects fainter than about 12 mag and brighter than about 17 mag, in or near the error circle of the ROSAT positions, were tested for optical variability on hundreds of archival plates of the Sonneberg field patrol. The present paper contains probable optical identifications of altogether 256 of the 370 ROSAT sources analysed. In particular, we found 126 AGN (some of them may be misclassified CVs), 17 likely clusters of galaxies, 16 eruptive double stars (mostly CVs), 43 chromospherically active stars, 65 stars brighter than about 13 mag, 7 UV Cet stars, 3 semiregular resp. slow irregular variable stars of late spectral type, 2 DA white dwarfs, 1 Am star, 1 supernova remnant and 1 planetary nebula. X-ray emission is, expectedly, tightly correlated with optical variability, and thus our new method for optically identifying X-ray sources is demonstrated to be feasible., Comment: 92 pages, 521 figures, A&A (accepted)

The quasar-type blazar 4C 38.41 (B3 1633+382) experienced a large outburst in 2011, which was detected throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum. We present the results of low-energy multifrequency monitoring by the GASP project of the WEBT consortium and collaborators, as well as those of spectropolarimetric/spectrophotometric monitoring at the Steward Observatory. We also analyse high-energy observations of the Swift and Fermi satellites. In the optical-UV band, several results indicate that there is a contribution from a QSO-like emission component, in addition to both variable and polarised jet emission. The unpolarised emission component is likely thermal radiation from the accretion disc that dilutes the jet polarisation. We estimate its brightness to be R(QSO) ~ 17.85 - 18 and derive the intrinsic jet polarisation degree. We find no clear correlation between the optical and radio light curves, while the correlation between the optical and \gamma-ray flux apparently fades in time, likely because of an increasing optical to \gamma-ray flux ratio. As suggested for other blazars, the long-term variability of 4C 38.41 can be interpreted in terms of an inhomogeneous bent jet, where different emitting regions can change their alignment with respect to the line of sight, leading to variations in the Doppler factor \delta. Under the hypothesis that in the period 2008-2011 all the \gamma-ray and optical variability on a one-week timescale were due to changes in \delta, this would range between ~ 7 and ~ 21. If the variability were caused by changes in the viewing angle \theta\ only, then \theta\ would go from ~ 2.6 degr to ~ 5 degr. Focused-ion-beam milling is used to fabricate nanostencil masks suitable for the fabrication of magnetic nanostructures relevant for spin transfer torque studies. Nanostencil masks are used to define the device dimensions prior to the growth of the thin film stack. They consist of a wet etch resistant top layer and an insulator on top of a pre-patterned bottom electrode. The insulator supports a hard mask and gives rise to an undercut by its selective etching. The approach is demonstrated by fabricating current perpendicular to the plane Co/Cu/Co nanopillar junctions, which exhibit current-induced magnetization dynamics., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, submitted to APL

We present here new spectroscopic observations of Mrk 1040 and LEDA 212995 (Mrk 1040 companion) obtained with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT). The intensity ratios and widths for the narrow emission lines found in LEDA 212995 are typical of H II regions. The red-shift (0.0169$\pm$0.00015) of the object derived from these emission lines is very close to the red-shift of Mrk 1040 (z=0.01665). The weak narrow and broad absorption lines were detected in the H$\alpha$ wavelength band of LEDA 212995 spectra. These absorptions indicate that the companion might be at least partly obscured by Mrk 1040. In the context of the connection among galaxy-galaxy interaction, starbursts and nuclear activity, we present and discuss a quantitative morphological analysis based on BVR images and a detailed spectroscopic investigation of two interacting galaxies, the Seyfert 2 Tol1238-364 (IC 3639) and its companion ESO381-G009, forming a triple system with ESO381-G006. Broad-band optical photometry is complemented by Halpha imaging, which provides information about the distribution of star forming regions across the galaxies. Long-slit spectroscopic data obtained at different position angles of the slit are employed to determine the physical conditions of circumnuclear and extranuclear regions. A mixture of thermal and non-thermal ionizing radiation is found in the surroundings of the nucleus of Tol1238-364 and the energy budget supports the presence of a circumnuclear starburst.Several regions in both the galaxies show anomalous line ratios: additional ionization by shock-heating and low ionization of some extranuclear HII regions are suggested as possible explanations. An analysis of the emission-line profiles reveals the presence of a broad Halpha component in the nuclear region of Tol1238-364. Independent estimates of the star formation rates (SFR) were obtained through flux-calibrated Halpha-images and FIR emission in the four IRAS bands. Overall SFR densities have been compared with the SFR densities derived from Halpha emission in the individual regions of the galaxies sampled by long-slit spectra. In both galaxies an enhancement of the star formation activity with respect to isolated galaxies is revealed. The prevalence of starburst or nuclear activity has been examined through FIR color indices. We present recent results from spectroscopic data and modeling of the biconical ionized gas in the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 4388. A field of ~2.6 x 2.4 kpc centered on the nucleus has been observed by means of the modern technique of integral field spectroscopy. The analysis of more than two hundred spectra allowed to study the physical characteristics of the gas in the surroundings of the active nucleus. The South-West ionization cone, revealed by the [O III]5007/H-beta excitation map, shows high emission line ratios not completely supported by simple photoionization. Composite models which account for the combined effects of photoionization and shock show that such high [O III]/H-beta line ratios are emitted by low density (n_0=30 cm^-3) gas inside large (D > 1 pc) shocked clouds (V_s=100 km/s) reached by a relatively low flux from the active nucleus. The data of the VEELR in the North-East cone by Yoshida et al. (2002) have been modeled. The results confirm that photoionization is the prevailing mechanism, but nontheless weak shocks are under way between colliding clouds with small (< 1 pc) sizes and low densities n_0 <= 100 cm^-3, moving outward at relatively low velocities (V_s=100 km/s)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Semiconductor spintronics will need to control spin injection phenomena in the non-linear regime. In order to study these effects we have performed spin injection measurements from a dilute magnetic semiconductor [(Zn,Be,Mn)Se] into nonmagnetic (Zn,Be)Se at elevated bias. When the applied voltage is increased to a few mV we find a strong decrease of the spin injection efficiency. The observed behavior is modelled by extending the charge-imbalance model for spin injection to include band bending and charge accumulation at the interface of the two compounds. We present here results of studies of the properties of galaxies located in very low density environments. We observed 26 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) from the Second Byurakan (SBS) and Case surveys located in voids with the radial velocities V < 11000 km/s, two BCGs in the void behind the Virgo cluster and 11 BCGs in denser environments. HI fluxes and profile widths, as well as estimates of total HI masses, are presented for the 27 detected galaxies (of which 6 are in three galaxy pairs and are not resolved by the radiotelescope beam). Preliminary comparisons of void BCGs with similar objects from intermediate density regions - in the general field and the Local Supercluster (sub-samples of BCGs in the SBS zone) and in the dense environment of the Virgo Cluster (a BCD sample) - are performed using the hydrogen-to-blue-luminosity ratio M(HI)/L_B. We find that for the same blue luminosity, for M_B > -18.0, BCGs in lower density environment have on average more HI. The slope (beta) of the M(HI)/L_B proportional to L^(beta) for BCGs shows a trend of steepening with decreasing bright galaxy density, being very close to zero for the densest environment considered here and reaching (beta) = -0.4 for voids., Comment: 15 pages, Latex (aa.cls) with 4 ps-figures, A&A, in press. Detailed modeling of the different regions of NGC 7130 is presented, accounting for its composite nature of AGN and starburst galaxy. Shock waves, created by stellar winds from hot massive stars and by supernova ejecta, are evident in the continuum and line spectra emitted from the clouds. A novel magnetoresistance effect, due to the injection of a spin-polarized electron current from a dilute magnetic into a non-magnetic semiconductor, is presented. The effect results from the suppression of a spin channel in the non-magnetic semiconductor and can theoretically yield a positive magnetoresistance of 100%, when the spin flip length in the non-magnetic semiconductor is sufficiently large. We report on the MBE-growth and magnetotransport properties of p-type BeMnTe, a new ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor. BeMnTe thin film structures can be grown almost lattice matched to GaAs for Mn concentrations up to 10% using solid source MBE. A high p-type doping with nitrogen can be achieved by using an RF-plasma source. BeMnTe and BeTe layers have been characterized by magneto-transport measurements. At low temperatures, the BeMnTe samples exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect. A hysteresis in the anomalous Hall effect appears below 2.5K in the most heavily doped sample, which indicates the occurrence of a ferromagnetic phase., Comment: pdf only

We theoretically investigate magnetoresistance (MR) effects in connection with spin filtering in quantum-coherent transport through tunnel junctions based on non-magnetic/semimagnetic heterostructures. We find that spin filtering in conjunction with the suppression/enhancement of the spin-dependent Fermi seas in semimagnetic contacts gives rise to (i) spin-split kinks in the MR of single barriers and (ii) a robust beating pattern in the MR of double barriers with a semimagnetic well. We report the discovery of a new variable star, called S 10947 Aql, as the likely optical counterpart of RX J2009.8+1557. The optical variability pattern as well as the detected X-ray emission suggest that it is a chromospherically active binary of the RS Canum Venaticorum type. We discovered an occasional disappearance of the eclipsing minima as well as large variations in the eclipse amplitude. We have identified the ROSAT all-sky survey source RX J1953.1+2115 with a newly discovered dwarf novae (named S 10943 Vulpeculae) with a recurrence time of 83.6 days. With the expected period of ~2.8 hrs (based on the measured superhump period of 2.871 hrs) S 10943 Vul would be the SU Ursae Majoris star with the second largest superhump (and orbital) period known (together with TU Men)., Comment: to appear in Inf. We have discovered four AGN in the ROSAT all-sky-survey data with very steep X-ray spectra. We apply several models to these X-ray spectra with emphasis on warm absorber models which give an adequate description of the data. We report on the follow-up optical and radio observations which allow the identification of three of these objects as Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, and the fourth as BL Lac object. We have measured small-FWHM Hbeta lines, strong FeII emission and weak [OIII] emission in the three Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, in line with known correlations with respect to the steepness of the X-ray spectra. We have discovered strong optical variability in the BL Lac object and two of the Seyfert galaxies using photographic plates of the Sonneberg Observatory field patrol. We finally discuss the statistical implications of our search algorithm on the expected number density of soft X-ray selected AGN and conclude that up to 30% of X-ray selected AGN might have supersoft X-ray spectra., Comment: 18 pages gzipped and uuencoded postscript, including 10 figures accepted for publication in Astron.
