Abstract

2-Chloro-1,3,2-benzodioxastiboles undergo apparent nucleophilic displacement reactions on antimony in reactions with relatively weak bases. For example, 2-chloro-5-methyl-1,3,2-benzodioxastibole (3) gives 2-(n-butylamino)-5-methyl-1,3,2-benzodioxastibole (14) on treatment with n-butylamine. However, reaction of a 2-chloro-1,3,2-benzodioxastibole with a strong base leads, at least in part, to an apparent electron transfer reaction, with formation of a complex mixture of products. For example, treatment of 2-chloro-5-tert-butyl-1,3,2-benzodioxastibole (2) with phenylmagnesium bromide in tetrahydrofuran, with subsequent acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of the reaction mixture, gives rise to tert-butyl alcohol, catechol, 4-tert-butyl-catechol, phenol, triphenylantimony, biphenyl and methyl-phenylcarbinol.

3. Basic Studies of the Lithium Secondary Battery.

Abstract

Poly-1, 4-dimethoxybenzene has been synthesized by the anodic oxidation of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene in aprotic electrolytes. The black polymer is a doped semiconductor as formed. This material is converted to polymeric (olimeric) hydroquinone and quinone. The polymers are insoluble in all common solvents except for the polyhydroquinone in aqueous base. A coulombic titration of this quinone, using and electrode compounded with carbon and in an aprotic electrolyte, gave an equivalent weight corresponding to approx. 0.5e(-) per quinone unit. Similar results were observed in the initial cycles in Li cells, however, the capacity of the electrode degraded on cycling.

Abstract

It was proposed that nitrogen-containing, conductive polymers could be useful as cathode materials in lithium primary cells. The research consisted of the synthesis and evaluation of polymers and of monomeric model compounds. Polyaniline (aniline black) was identified as a promising cathode material. Generally, the desired polymers proved to be difficult to synthesize, in part due to their unique properties. (Author)
