Introduction: Coastal forests occupy low-lying elevations, typically adjacent to tidal salt marshes. Exposed to increased flooding with sea level rise, coastal forests have retreated as salt marshes advance upslope. Coastal forests likely currently experience periodic tidal flooding, but whether they temporarily accommodate or quickly succumb to rising sea level under changing climatic conditions remains a complex question. Disentangling how tidal flooding and climate affect tree growth is important for gauging which coastal forests are most at risk of loss with increasing sea levels. Methods: Here, dendrochronology was used to study tree growth relative to climate variables and tidal flooding. Specifically, gradients in environmental conditions were compared to species-specific (Pinus taeda, Pinus rigida, Ilex opaca) growth in coastal forests of two estuaries (Delaware and Barnegat Bays). Gradient boosted linear regression, a machine learning approach, was used to investigate tree growth responses across gradients in temperature, precipitation, and tidal water levels. Whether tree ring widths increased or decreased with changes in each parameter was compared to predictions for seasonal climate and mean high water level to identify potential vulnerabilities. Results: These comparisons suggested that climate change as well as increased flood frequency will have mixed, and often non-linear, effects on coastal forests. Variation in responses was observed across sites and within species, supporting that site-specific conditions have a strong influence on coastal forest response to environmental change. Changes in global mean sea level are a clear indicator of a warming climate, but local factors including land subsidence or uplift, cause changes in relative sea level that drive shoreline shifts. These local changes and their impact on coastal hazards matter to coastal communities. NZ SeaRise produced relative sea level projections for Aotearoa to include the latest global climate and Antarctic Ice Sheet research and estimates of vertical land movement at high spatial resolution. Research-informed communication to the public and planners included a web-based projections tool supplemented by written and visual narratives, and a media engagement plan. This communication, and analysis of media impact, provided a case study for audience-relevant information on sea-level rise. Information regarding shoreline change and evolving hazards, required for risk assessment, was not included in the NZ SeaRise projections. New research is needed to reduce uncertainty in future Antarctic Ice Sheet contribution to sea level, link changes in sea surface height to our dynamic land surface and enhance communication approaches. Several examples of the required research are presented here but ongoing efforts must refine the timing and magnitude of coastline change, better define coastal hazards and risks, and develop appropriate adaptation strategies for unavoidable climate change impacts. Low‐relief coastal landscapes are at major risk of rising sea levels, as vertical changes in relative sea level have far‐reaching lateral effects. Integration of a dense 2D grid of seismic reflection data with sedimentological and geotechnical data obtained in two offshore wind farm zones allows detailed documentation of postglacial landforms and environmental change over a 1,021 km2 area in the western sector of the southern North Sea. Following the retreat of Last Glacial Maximum ice sheets from the southern North Sea, the resulting postglacial terrestrial landscape provided a surface for peatland formation as climate started to warm and the water table rose in response to relative sea‐level rise. Southward‐draining fluvial networks formed contemporaneously with the peatlands, and remnants of this terrestrial wetland landscape are buried beneath Holocene marine sediments. Distinctive isolated incisional features and discrete widening of fluvial channels that cut through the peats are interpreted as either tidal ponds or relict tidal channels. These features record the evolution of this landscape through the Early Holocene as marine transgression inundated a low‐relief coastal plain. The erosion of the peatlands observed in the cores, the patchy preservation of the organic wetland landscape, and the lack of preserved barrier systems recorded by the seismic reflection data suggest that the rate of relative sea‐level rise outpaced sediment supply during the Late Postglacial and Early Holocene in this area of the southern North Sea. In a regional context, the southward draining river channels contrast to northward fluvial drainage to the North Sea, pointing to a subtle drainage divide in the palaeolandscape and the presence of a low‐relief land bridge separating the North Sea and the English‐Channel/La Manche during the Early Holocene. The documented scenario of rising sea levels combined with decreasing sediment supply in a low‐relief setting is a situation faced by many global deltas and coastlines, which makes the southern North Sea a crucial archive of coastal landscape change. The boundary between land and sea is among the most extensive and extreme ecological barriers on planet Earth. Intertidal organisms living at this junction are subject to potentially lethal conditions related to desiccation, temperature fluctuations, and wave shock. Although difficult to quantify at a global level, rocky coasts account for between a third and three-quarters of all shorelines today. Resistant to coastal erosion, rocky coasts also exhibit adaptations by marine invertebrates and marine algae within intertidal zones that are geographically widespread. Biotic composition is variable depending on the tidal range at any given place and on climatic differences between tropical and more temperate latitudes. Contemporary granite shores having low recession rates with well-established biotic zones are reviewed in three regions: Mount Desert Island in Maine, USA (44° N latitude), Mahé and Praslin islands in Seychelles (4°30′ S Latitude), and Lizard Island off the coast of Queensland, Australia (14°40′ S Latitude). The zonal composition and overall biotic diversity at these locations are compared, as well as the fossilization potential of key biota. Over the Phanerozoic time period during the last 538 million years, the ratio between land and ocean varied as a function of plate tectonics depending on the maximum dispersal or coalescence of continents and on relative changes in global sea level. Fossil biotas from a dozen paleoislands with dominant rocky shores that range from 485 million to 125,000 years in age are reviewed to show diversification through time, taking into account episodic mass extinctions. Relationships between storm tracks and volcanic eruptions that factor into physical disruptions are also considered as means of rapid burial and preservation. Themes related to rocky-shore ecology and paleoecology benefit from the cross-fertilization of ideas by marine biologists and marine paleontologists. During the last 10 kyr, significant subsidence and uplift occurred on Mayotte Island in the Comoros archipelago (Indian Ocean), but the role of volcanic processes in Holocene vertical movements has been neglected in the research so far. Here, we show that an abrupt subsidence of 6–10 m occurred between 9.4 and 10 kyr ago, followed by an uplift of the same amplitude at a rate of 9 mm/yr from 8.1 to 7 kyr ago. A comparison of the relative sea level of Mayotte and a reference sea level curve for the global ocean has been conducted using a modeling approach. This shows that an increasing and decreasing pressure at depth, equivalent to the process caused by a deep magma reservoir (50–70 km), was responsible for ~6–10 m subsidence and 6–10 m uplift, whereas loading by new volcanic edifices caused subsidence during the last few thousand years. Surface movements and deep pressure variations may be caused by pulses from the deep mantle, related to superplume activity, but uncertainties and unknowns about these phenomena are still present and further studies are needed. Archaeological evidence for local environmental change is obscured by the tendency for humans to remove natural resources from places of procurement and deposit them elsewhere, sometimes at great distance. This is especially problematic for changes in relative sea level, which clearly affected the inhabitability of low-elevation coastal landforms but not necessarily the regional availability of resources of cultural or economic value. Needed are proxies for relative sea level from non-dietary taxa. One genus of terrestrial snails, Truncatella, offers good potential in this respect because of its specific niche at the interface between seawater and land. However, like food resources displaced by people, Truncatella shells are displaced by storms and redistributed landward of the coastline. Distinguishing between autochthonous and allochthonous deposits is essential to inferring relative sea level from the occurrence of this taxon alone. To this end, assemblages of Truncatella shell from stratified sites along the north Gulf Coast of Florida, USA are compared to associated archaeological snails of other taxa and to snail shells from the wrack of proximate foreshores to infer changes in relative sea level over the past four millennia. Variation in the morphology of shorelines and in the accumulation rates of archaeological midden mitigates any direct relationship between terrestrial snail frequencies and sea level, but the results of this study suggest that our approach can be applied to other non-dietary taxa occupying marginally terrestrial niches to refine estimates for sea level derived from the sedimentary records of geological cores. Amidst escalating global changes and heightened human activities, tidal flats worldwide are facing a transition from accretion to erosion. In order to quantify the growth pattern of tidal flats and its response to changes in multiple external driving factors, here we established a geometric model, in combination with field surveys, to study the historical behavior (1127–1990) and future trends (2100) of a typical tidal flat system on the Jiangsu coast, China. The results indicate that sediment supply and relative sea level change determine the accretion‐erosion status and the eventual morphological pattern of the tidal flat. If these two factors remain stable and sediment supply can compensate for the increase in sediment accommodation space caused by sea level change, the tidal flat will continue to accrete until its growth limit is reached. Otherwise, tidal flats will face erosion risk, which can be further enhanced by localized land subsidence. Furthermore, changes in the coastal profile show a trend of progressive retreating, with the lower part of intertidal zone being eroded more rapidly than its upper part. This demonstrates that the sediment supply has been reduced to such a level that the present "in‐transition" evolution pattern of central Jiangsu coast will soon be replaced by severe inundation and erosion. Hence, we advocate for a comprehensive, multi‐tiered coastal protection strategy focusing on wave suppression, enhancement of sediment retention, and increased storm resistance. This strategy underscores fundamental underlying mechanisms of the accretion‐erosion transition, which is crucial for the future safeguarding of coastal wetlands globally. Plain Language Summary: Tidal flats are important potential land resources. Over the Holocene period, under increased sediment from rivers has led to rapid growth in most coastal areas, supporting the prosperity of coastal cities. However, uncertainties exist regarding the limits of this growth, and global changes and human activities are causing tidal flats worldwide to shift from growth to erosion. To understand the tidal flats growth patterns and their response to future challenges, we developed a geometric model based on key processes. Field surveys and a millennium‐scale study in eastern China support the model's reliability. Our findings highlight sediment supply and relative sea‐level change as key factors in tidal flat evolution, with growth limitations even with sustained sediment supply. We propose a protective scheme based on tidal flat evolution mechanisms to enhance coastal resilience against global change. Denmark has been subject to complex interactions of isostatic uplift and eustatic sea level changes since the last deglaciation. Prominent coastal beach ridges as well as lagoonal and lake deposits from this period have been investigated at a number of sites in the region to constrain the relative sea level (RSL) changes. However, despite the common occurrence of former coastal lagoons and lakes in proximity to raised beach ridges, they have rarely been studied in combination. In this study, we use a multiproxy approach including geospatial data, lake sediment coring, ground penetrating radar and optically stimulated luminescence dating to investigate the Holocene coastal evolution and RSL history at Rugård in Mols Bjerge National Park, on the east coast of the Jutland Peninsula. Our results show that the coastal area at Rugård was transgressed between c. 7.6 and 7.0 cal. ka BP and that RSL was ~4.5 m higher than present between c. 6.6 and 5.9 ka ago, when the highest section of the beach ridge plain was deposited. The elevation and timing of this relative highstand are in good agreement with previous estimates of the Littorina transgression and contribute to our combined knowledge about RSL history and coastal evolution in the southern Kattegat. Subsequently, isostatic adjustment has caused uplift and erosion of the beach ridge plain, but renewed progradation and deposition of a lower beach plain have taken place since c. 1740 CE. The dynamics of the ice sheets on glacial-interglacial time scales are highly controlled by interactions with the solid Earth, i.e., glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Particularly at marine ice sheets, competing feedback mechanisms govern the migration of the ice sheet's grounding line and hence the ice sheet stability. In this study, we run coupled ice sheet–solid Earth simulations over the last two glacial cycles. For the ice sheet dynamics we apply the Parallel Ice Sheet Model PISM and for the load response of the solid Earth we use the three-dimensional viscoelastic Earth model VILMA, which, in addition, considers the gravitationally consistent redistribution of water (the sea level equation). We decided on an offline coupling between the two model components. By convergence of trajectories of the Antarctic Ice Sheet deglaciation we determine optimal coupling time step and spatial resolution and compare patterns of inferred relative sea level change since the Last Glacial Maximum with the results from previous studies. With our coupling setup we evaluate the relevance of feedback mechanisms for the glaciation and deglaciation phases in Antarctica considering different 3D Earth structures resulting in a range of load-response time scales. For rather long time scales, in a glacial climate associated with far-field sea level low stand, we find grounding line advance up to the edge of the continental shelf mainly in West Antarctica, dominated by a self-amplifying GIA feedback, which we call the 'forebulge feedback'. For the much shorter time scale of deglaciation, dominated by the Marine Ice Sheet Instability, our simulations suggest that the stabilizing GIA feedback can significantly slow-down grounding line retreat in the Ross sector, which is dominated by a very weak Earth structure (i.e. low mantle viscosity and thin lithosphere). This delaying effect prevents a Holocene grounding line retreat beyond its present-day location, which is discussed in the scientific community, supported by observational evidence at the Siple Coast and by previous model simulations. The described coupled framework, PISM-VILMA, allows for defining restart states to run multiple sensitivity simulations from. It can be easily implemented in Earth System Models (ESMs) and provides the tools to gain a better understanding of ice sheet stability on glacial time scales as well as in a warmer future climate. Sequence stratigraphy is a commonly used approach to understand basin-fill history and the occurrence of conventional reservoir and/or probable source rocks. Reconstructing a sequence stratigraphic framework in carbonates, marls, and organic-rich mudstones is challenging due to environmental, petrophysical, and sedimentological variations that can be subtle, whereas seismic data may be lacking or of limited use. For this reason, incorporation between palynological analysis and chemostratigraphic profiles is becoming increasingly common to facilitate sequence stratigraphic reconstruction. This study investigates the Quse (lower Toarcian) and Sewa formations (upper Bajocian-Bathonian) in the Bilong Co section from the Qiangtang Basin of central Tibet. Eighty-three rock samples were analysed for their whole-rock inorganic geochemical composition, of which 25 rock samples were tested for palynological and palynofacies analyses. The palynological composition defined two associations for the study section. The lower part of the Bilong Co section consisted is dominated by a moderate to high abundance of opaque phytoclasts versus low to moderate amorphous organic matter (AOM) content with a high concentration of sphaeromorphs pollen grains, revealing deposition of this interval at times of low relative sea level in fluvio-deltaic settings. The middle to upper parts of the section comprised of significantly high AOM content versus low phytoclasts and high content of sphaeromorphs pollen grains, but with increasing the relative abundance of dinoflagellate cysts, indicating a phase of high sea level. Chemostratigraphic variations relevant to changes in relative sea level delineated the subdivision of the Quse and Sewa formations into two and three third-order transgressive-regressive sequences, respectively. The collision between the Lhasa and Qiangtang blocks during the Early-Middle Jurassic is suggested to control consequent subduction and sea level highstand, especially during deposition of the Sewa Formation. Geochemical proxies that relate to shelf carbonate production are calcium, strontium, whereas proxies that relate to siliciclastics include titanium, zirconium, manganese, aluminium, and silicon, other redox-sensitive proxy like uranium is also implemented. This indicates that chemostratigraphic proxies are a promising tool for the interpretation of sea level cyclicity in terms of systems tracts and bounding surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bohai Bay is a typical area of global change research in East Asia, due to its unique geographical location and shallow water environment. In this paper, we present the results of a study of grain-size, geochemistry, pollen and algae of a middle to late Holocene sediment core from Haixing wetland, which located on the west coast of Bohai Bay. The results show that: 1) Prior to 6700 cal a B.P., the content of Cl, Sr/Ca ratio were the highest, end-member analysis of grain size suggested EM2 were dominant, which is characteristic of marine sediment and the concentrations of Pediastrum and Typha (indicating a freshwater environment) pollen were lowest, overall indicating the maximum of relative sea level; 2) During 6700–5000 cal a B.P., and the Ti and K contents, EM1 (lacustrine sedimentary component) increased substantially, EM2 decreased, and EM3 (fluvial sedimentary component) began to appear. The concentrations of Pediastrum , Dinophyceae and Typha pollen began to increase. All these indicating that the relative sea level began to fall and the study area became a lagoon environment; 3) During 5000–3500 cal a B.P. the Ti and K content increased further; EM1 was dominant, EM2 was rare, indicating that the relative sea level decreased further and the lagoon gradually became enclosed; 4) After 3500 cal a B.P., the Ti content reached its maximum and the Cl content and Sr/Ca ratio decreased to their lowest levels. EM1 was dominant and EM2 was virtually absent; dinoflagellate cysts almost disappeared and there was large increase of Typha pollen, indicating the complete exclusion of a marine influence during most of this period. However, during 2500–2000 cal a B.P. the Cl and the Sr/Ca ratio increased slightly once again, indicating a transient transgression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Charles Darwin and Robert FitzRoy documented coseismic coastal uplift associated with the great 1835 Chile earthquake (M > 8.5) at Isla Santa María. In 2010, another similar earthquake (Mw 8.8) uplifted the island, ending the seismic cycle. The 2‐m uplift in 2010 caused major geomorphic and sedimentologic changes to the island's sandy beaches. Understanding the processes governing these changes requires pre‐ and post‐earthquake measurements to differentiate the effects of abrupt coseismic uplift from seasonal, annual, and decadal‐scale signals. Here, we combine spatial analysis of aerial imagery, field geophysics, wind and wave models to quantify geomorphic changes between 1941 and 2021 along the main beach. During the late interseismic phase (1941–2010), a ridge‐runnel system was formed and then buried by a frontal dune. Because of uplift in 2010, the shoreline prograded ~20 m, the uplifted berm was abandoned, and a new seaward berm was built. In the following decade, the abandoned berm was eroded by widening of the backshore as the shoreline and dune advanced seaward. Over the surveyed eight decades, the shoreline prograded continuously, increasing from <1 m/year to up to 3–5 m/year after the earthquake. We infer that these changes were caused by a sedimentary disequilibrium driven by variations in relative sea level, moving formerly passive sands from eroding cliffs and marine depths into the coastal sedimentary system, thus promoting long and cross‐shore sediment transport and, utterly, accretion. This research assesses the impacts of climate change and relative sea level (RSL) fluctuations on coastal vegetation during the past 2000 years along the Mahanadi River delta, northeast coast of India. Sediment samples of a 2.6 m trench from Barhatubi area located in the lower flood plain of Mahanadi River delta were studied for sedimentological and pollen analysis. Mangrove succession can be divided into three zones: (1) Freshwater marsh (∼1980–1420 cal yr BP); (2) Tidal flat (∼1420–770 cal yr BP) and (3) Landward mangrove margin (∼770 cal yr BP-Present). A transgressive shift from floodplain freshwater marsh to a tidal flat is recorded between ∼1980–1420 cal yr BP which is evidenced by upland tree taxa, Poaceae, pteridophyte and fungal spores along with low percentage of mangroves such as Avicennia, Sonneratia and Rhizophora representing the landward edge of the tidal region. Dominance of Sonneratia and a decline in terrestrial taxa reflects a rise in the relative sea level around ∼1420 cal yr BP with less freshwater input from land suggesting a weakened monsoon condition. After ∼770 cal yr BP, an overall regressive phase with small cycles of relative sea level rise/fall has been observed due to the dominance of salt tolerant Avicennia along with Rhizophora, Excoecaria agallocha and Aegialitis rotundifolia alternating with Sonneratia and other marine palynomorphs. The late-glacial and post-glacial history of the development of the White Sea coastal zone in the area of the Varzuga River estuary is considered as a result of the interaction of endogenous and exogenous factors of coastal morpholithogenesis. Based on the geomorphological investigations, study of Holocene deposits by lithostratigraphic, diatom, and radiocarbon analyses, as well as collection and analysis of published data, new results on the development of relief of the area for ~13 cal ka have been obtained. The features of the regional hierarchical morphostructure and local post-glacial tectonics of the territory—the spatial relationships of blocks and the rate of vertical movements—were determined. The superimposed linear Nizhnevarzugskaya Depression, which determined the configuration of the Varzuga River estuary in the late-glacial and post-glacial periods, was identified for the first time. The influence of the spatial ratio of blocks and differentiated post-glacial uplift on the coastal morpholithogenesis was established. The course of changes in the relative sea level (RSL), development conditions, and morphodynamics of the open coast and the estuary of the Varzuga River were reconstructed, and new data on the rhythms of coastal geomorphologic processes (coastal, estuarine, and eolian) were obtained. Three stages of development of the coastal zone were identified, which corresponded to regional rhythms of changes in the relative sea level and climate. They are (I) the Late Glacial transgression and Early Holocene regression (~12 to 9.8 cal ka BP), (II) the Middle Holocene Tapes transgression (7.8 to 4.9 cal ka BP), and (III) the Late Holocene regression (after 4.9 cal ka BP). The upper marine boundary of the Late Glacial transgression was traced at heights of ~54 or 55 m to the west of the Nizhnevarzugskaya depression, 39 or 40 m to its east, and 22 to 25 m a.s.l in the depression. The shores of lower morphostructural blocks up to ~10.2–9.8 cal ka BP were probably blocked by dead ice. During the Tapes transgression, the RSL reached a maximum (~20 m a.s.l.) of ~7.8 to 7.6 cal ka BP and slowly decreased to ~15 m a.s.l. in the interval of ~7.6 to 4.9 cal ka BP. The prevailing directions of sediment fluxes and the approaches of winds and waves became similar to those of today and have not changed significantly since that time. The main source of the coastal sediment supply was the erosion of glaciofluvial sediments and the input of sands from the seabed. In the interval of ~4.9 to 1.7 cal ka BP, the RSL decreased to ~5 m a.s.l. and then slowly approached the modern one. Activation of coastal (~5–1 cal ka BP) and channel (~4.9–4.7 to 3.6–3.4 cal ka BP) processes contributed to rapid filling of the estuary and formation of accumulative sand terraces on exposed banks. The sediment runoff of the Varzuga River became the main source of coastal sediment supply. After ~2.3 cal ka BP, several stages in the intensification of eolian processes were revealed. Here, we investigate Mid‐ to Late‐Holocene vegetation changes in low‐lying coastal areas in Tonga and how changing sea levels and recurrent volcanic eruptions have influenced vegetation dynamics on four islands of the Tongan archipelago (South Pacific). To investigate past vegetation and environmental change at Ngofe Marsh ('Uta Vava'u), we examined palynomorphs (pollen and spores), charcoal (fire), and sediment characteristics (volcanic activity) from a 6.7‐m‐long sediment core. Radiocarbon dating indicated the sediments were deposited over the last 7700 years. We integrated the Ngofe Marsh data with similar previously published data from Avai'o'vuna Swamp on Pangaimotu Island, Lotofoa Swamp on Foa Island, and Finemui Swamp on Ha'afeva Island. Plant taxa were categorized as littoral, mangrove, rainforest, successional/ disturbance, and wetland groups, and linear models were used to examine relationships between vegetation, relative sea level change, and volcanic eruptions (tephra). We found that relative sea level change has impacted vegetation on three of the four islands investigated. Volcanic eruptions were not identified as a driver of vegetation change. Rainforest decline does not appear to be driven by sea level changes or volcanic eruptions. From all sites analyzed, vegetation at Finemui Swamp was most sensitive to changes in relative sea level. While vegetation on low‐lying Pacific islands is sensitive to changing sea levels, island characteristics, such as area and elevation, are also likely to be important factors that mediate specific island responses to drivers of change. The Middle Jurassic was a time of marginal to shallow shelf settings dominated by organic matter-rich deposition in northern Egypt, southern Tethys. Paleoenvironmental and sequence stratigraphic reconstructions are of paramount significance for a better understanding of basin history and related reservoirs and source rock units. For this purpose, a detailed palynomorph and palynofacies analysis of the Middle Jurassic Khatatba Formation in the Dahab-Mireir Basin, north Western Desert, was conducted. A moderately to well-preserved, moderately diverse palynomorph assemblage of spores, pollen, and dinoflagellate cysts is identified. Marker dinoflagellate cysts, including Dichadogonyaulax sellwoodii, Escharisphaeridia pocokii, Gonyaulacysta adecta, Korystocysta gochtii, Pareodinia ceratophora, and Wanaea acollaris, defined a Bajocian to Callovian age. Palynofacies analysis of the Khatatba Formation revealed two assemblages, whereby PFA-1 is the most abundant in the study well and is comprised mainly of terrestrial phytoclasts deposited nearby fluvio-deltaic sources. The infrequently reported PFA-2 consists of moderate abundances of phytoclasts and AOM, deposited in an inner shelf environment. A more reliable paleoenvironmental interpretation was indicated based on three palynomorph assemblages. The spore-dominated assemblage indicated deposition in a deltaic environment, while the mixed palynomorph assemblage revealed fluvio-deltaic to marginal shallow marine conditions. The microplankton-dominated assemblage is represented by minor samples and reflects an offshore inner shelf condition. Furthermore, the Middle Jurassic relative sea level was reconstructed based on the quantitative variations in the terrestrial/marine (T:M) ratios and abundances of spores, pollen, and dinoflagellate cysts. This led to the subdivide of the Khatatba Formation into thirteen third-order transgressive-regressive sequences, which can be correlated with the global Jurassic short-term sea level changes. Active tectonics and accelerated drifting of the Eurasian Plate during the Middle Jurassic are suggested to control basin uplift/subsidence and, therefore, recurring patterns of relative sea level change. We present an attempt to estimate the long-term changes in Relative Sea Level (RSL), in addition to the different factors contributing to such trends on a local and regional scale, using a statistical linear model. The time series analysis corresponded to 17 tide-gauges, grouped in three different areas: the northern and western Atlantic coasts of the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and the southern and eastern coasts of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. The analysis was performed for two periods: 1948–2019, using tide-gauge data; and 1993–2019, using both tide-gauge and altimetry data for comparison. The trends for the period 1948–2019 ranged between 1.09 ± 0.14 (Canary Islands) and 2.05 ± 0.21 mm/yr for the northern and western Atlantic Iberian Peninsula. Altimetry data during the period 1993–2019 yielded quite homogeneous results for all the locations and regions, ranging between 2.7 ± 0.4 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mm/yr. In contrast, the results obtained from tide-gauge data for this recent period showed a large dispersion, very likely due to local effects, or perhaps even to levelling or instrumental errors. Nevertheless, when the results were averaged for each area, the observed trends were comparable to the altimetry results, with values of 2.3 ± 0.8, 2.7 ± 0.5, and 2.8 ± 0.8 mm/yr for the three regions of study. A stepwise forward linear regression was used to relate the observed RSL variability to the atmospheric forcing and the thermosteric and halosteric components of the sea level. Surprisingly, the thermosteric and halosteric contributions were not significantly correlated to the observed RSL in many cases; consequently, the steric, the total addition of mass, the mass of salt, and the freshwater contributions to the observed sea level trends could not be reliably estimated. This result seems to have been the consequence of the scarcity of temperature and salinity data; this hypothesis was confirmed, with the exception of the tide-gauge data for L'Estartit. This location is close to a well sampled region. In this case, the atmospheric variables and the thermosteric and halosteric terms accounted for 80% of the observed RSL variance, and the contributions of these terms could be estimated. The freshwater contribution for this location was between 1.3 and 1.4 mm/yr, consistent with recent estimations of the contributions of glaciers and Greenland and Antarctica Ice Sheets. Sea level oscillation during the Quaternary played a major role in the geomorphology and vegetation dynamics of coastal areas in southern Brazil, encompassing ecosystems that often have a unique biodiversity. Understanding the natural evolution of these areas is essential for decision making regarding land use regulations towards sustainable development, as well as to preserve the uniqueness of the coastal ecosystems. The southern Brazil coastal plain is formed by marine, transitional and continental Quaternary deposits controlled by past variations of the sea level. These variations shaped the coastal landscape and influenced the development of different Atlantic rainforest formations, such as mangroves and restingas. In particular, the restinga formation corresponds to a specific ecosystem that covers sandy soils of marine and fluvial–marine origin formed during the Quaternary on the Brazilian coastal plain. In this contribution, we present high-resolution palynological and stable isotope data from a Holocene core retrieved from the coastal plain of Santa Catarina Island (southern Brazil). We were able to identify four different environmental zones for the last 6520 yr BP. The first zone (6520–2920 cal yr BP) is characterized by a lagoon with large marine-water influence. Notably, the observed dinoflagellate cyst association suggests that marine waters entering the region had their origin in the relatively warm and saline Brazil Current waters. During the second zone (2920–1520 cal yr BP), marine-water contribution to the lagoon decreased until it became disconnected from the sea. The third zone (1520–550 cal yr BP) was marked by the decrease of the water level until it dried out and led to the colonization of herbaceous vegetation over the palaeo-lagoon. The last zone (550 cal yr BP–recent) is characterized by the consolidation of the coastal-plain Atlantic rainforest (restinga vegetation). Our results form an example of the strong sensitivity of southern Brazilian ecosystem change caused by relative sea level variations. We reconstruct the Holocene shore displacement of the Västervik‐Gamlebyviken area on the southeast coast of Sweden, characterised by a maritime cultural landscape and archaeological significance since the Mesolithic. Sediment cores were retrieved from four lake basins that have been raised above sea level due to the postglacial land uplift and eustatic sea level changes after the melting of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet. The cores were radiocarbon dated and analysed for loss on ignition and diatoms. The isolation thresholds of the basins were determined using LiDAR data. The results provide evidence for the initiation of the first Littorina Sea transgression in this area at 8.5 thousand calibrated years before present (cal. ka BP). A relative sea level rise by ∼7 m a.s.l. is recorded between 8.0 and 7.5 cal. ka BP with a highstand at ∼22 m a.s.l. between 7.5 and 6.2 cal. ka BP. These phases coincide with the second and third Littorina Sea transgressions, respectively, in the Blekinge area, southern Sweden and are consistent with the final deglaciation of North America. After 6.2 cal. ka BP, the relative sea level dropped below 22 m a.s.l., and remained at ∼20 m a.s.l. until 4.6 cal. ka BP coinciding with the fourth Littorina Sea transgression in Blekinge. From 4.6 to 4.2 cal. ka BP, the shore displacement shows a regression rate of 10 mm a−1 followed by a slowdown with a mean value of 4.6 mm a−1 until 1.6 cal. ka BP, when the relative sea level dropped below 3.3 m a.s.l. The Middle to Late Holocene highstand and other periods of minor sea level transgressions and/or higher salinity between 6.2 and 1.7 cal. ka BP are attributed to a combination of warmer climate and higher inflow of saline waters in the southern Baltic Sea due to stronger westerlies, caused by variations in the North Atlantic atmospheric patterns. When compared to their temperate coastal counterparts, sediments deposited and preserved along arid aeolian to shallow‐marine margins remain relatively poorly understood, particularly at the scale of lithofacies units and architectural elements. These systems often record evidence for relative sea‐level change within sedimentary basins. This work focusses on the Entrada–Curtis–Summerville formations that crop out in central eastern Utah, USA, and provides a detailed analysis of the aeolian Moab Member of the Curtis Formation (informally known as the Moab Tongue) that was impacted by cycles of marine transgressions and regression in the late Jurassic. This study utilises photogrammetry, sedimentary logging and sequence‐stratigraphical analysis techniques. Results indicate that four short‐lived transgressive‐regressive cycles are preserved within the Moab Member, followed by a broad regressive event recorded at the transition between the Curtis and Summerville formations. These cycles relate to changes in the relative sea level of the Sundance Sea and the deflation and expansion of the neighbouring aeolian dune field. During periods of normal regression, marine sediments displayed evidence of tidal and wave action, whereas the continental domain was characterised by growth of the aeolian system. However, when regression occurred within optimal physiographic conditions such as a restricted, semi‐enclosed basin, and at sufficient magnitude to outpace erg expansion, this acted to shut‐down bedform development and preservation. A rapid restriction of aeolian sediment availability and the inability of the dune field to recover resulted in the formation of deflationary sandsheets, arid coastal plain strata and contemporaneous shallow‐marine deposits that are starved of wind‐sourced sediments. This study highlights how a rapidly developing high‐magnitude regression can lead to the overall retraction of the erg. Deciphering the evolution and sequence stratigraphical relationships of arid aeolian to shallow marine margins is important in both understanding environmental interactions and improving the characterisation of reservoir rocks deposited in these settings. A recent discovery of a Bronze Age harbor site in Çamçalık provides new data for the relative sea level history along the coast of the Bozburun Peninsula over the last 3600 years. In this study, we compared the new and previously published data from nearby sites to determine the long‐term relative sea level changes. Further comparison of the observed sea level data and newly produced glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models clarified the tectonic contribution to the relative sea level changes. Our results suggest a nonlinear tectonic subsidence trend in the coastal zone since 3600 B.P. The increase in the relative sea level accelerated over the last 1400 years, mostly due to the seismic events controlled by the tectonic regime of the southeastern Aegean Sea. We can conclude that, as in the past, this active tectonic process will have a major impact on the future sea level evolution of the coastal sector of the Bozburun Peninsula. The aim of this work is to unravel the role of geomorphic indicators and/or signatures to be used as evidence for palaeoenvironmental changes and other forcing mechanisms from the lower reaches of the Sabarmati river basin, Gujarat, India region. In the present study, geomorphic features have been used as archives to debate the past land-sea interactions using satellite imagery. In the lower reaches of the Sabarmati river, a number of meanders, sinuosity changes, palaeochannels, and scroll plains have been identified. As a result of the rise and fall of the sea during the Holocene period, the changes in hydrodynamic and steady-state conditions of the river can be visualized in terms of changes in landforms. Thus, the intriguing geomorphic landforms in the lower portions of the Sabarmati basin delineate the likely archives and signs of previous environmental change, in particularly ∼ the relative sea level change. This approach provides first-hand documentation of the fluvial evolution under the direct impact of the varying forcing mechanisms. Atoll reefs are associated with subsiding regions. In the West Philippine Sea, the Kalayaan Island Group is an emergent feature of the region's atoll reefs. In this study, we established the long-term rate of subsidence in the Pag-asa Atoll Reefs by indicators of sea level positions on the seafloor and in Pag-asa Island. For submerged indicators of paleo-sea levels, a multibeam bathymetry with a 5-m resolution was used as the primary data source. Four pairs of submerged terraces and scarps, interpreted as former coral reef flats and reef fronts, respectively, were mapped. The terraces, PARa-d, from shallowest to deepest, occur at depth ranges of 7-10, 36-45, 82-90, and 115-120 m. The step-like morphology of the slopes off Pag-asa is likely due to the backstepping of reefs during the overall rise of sea level from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Terraces PARa-d are interpreted as records of reef re-establishments during the stillstand periods following meltwater pulse event (MWP)-1C, MWP-1B, MWP-1A, and MWP-2B/2A. There is no clear morphological indicator of coral terraces that can be attributed to the LGM period. Variation in the widths and depths of the terraces between the leeward and windward sides of the island is also observed. Greater wave exposure appears favorable for coral reef terrace growth in Pag-asa, except for deeper terraces. The possible absence of the deepest terrace on the north side and an LGM terrace is attributed to possible thinner coral reef accretion due to the combination of cooler waters and possible swifter winds prior to 14 kyr. Correlation of the terrace depths and beach rock elevations as Pag-asa with the paleo-sea level of correlative stillstand events indicate long-term subsidence of 1.2 mm/yr between 15-12 kyr that declined to 0.3 mm/yr between 12 kyr to present. With sea level rise due to global warming and continuing subsidence, Pag-asa Island is threatened by coastal erosion, more frequent inundation, and groundwater salinization that needs to be addressed through proper adaptation practices. Based on high‐quality two‐dimensional seismic profiles and well data, the seismic reflection characteristics from the late Pliocene and Pleistocene succession of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea have been analysed. The result will help in understanding the sedimentological development of slope areas. Twenty coeval clinothems are recognized and four major clinothem types are distinguished. In addition, three types of shelf‐edge trajectories are recognized. The various parameters of the clinothems are analysed quantitatively and the relationships between the various clinothem types are studied in combination with the controlling roles. It is concluded that: (i) the shelf‐edge trajectories are related to the type of clinothem; (ii) fluctuations in the relative sea level, in combination with variations in sediment supply, result in different clinothem types and geometric parameters; these parameters show interdependencies; (iii) the alternations of progradation and aggradation of clinothems may provide information of the relative sea level and changes in sediment supply; (iv) some lowstand fans could develop at the foot of the slope in the central–eastern part of the basin when the relative sea level started to fall or began to rise. The results of the present study are consequently significant for further quantitative analyses of the characteristics and development of the continental slope, not only in the Qiongdongnan Basin, but also in other basins. Geomorphological and sedimentological indicators are often used to reconstruct not only coastal evolution, but also relative sea level changes. In this work, we studied the coastal sediments of Psatha bay (Alkyonides Gulf, Greece) and beachrock outcrops in order to reconstruct the coastal evolution of the area. The drillings analysis included stratigraphy, sediment texture and radiocarbon dating. Detailed mapping of the beachrocks was accomplished using DGPS-GNSS, as well as mineralogical analysis and OSL dating of beachrock samples. The new beachrock index points indicate a sea level that fell by 0.64 ± 0.13 m since 2200 ± 210 years BP and by 0.95 ± 0.13 m since 4160 ± 320 years BP, as a direct result of its location near the uplifting footwall of Psatha fault, suggesting further a rate of tectonic uplift of ~0.26 mm/yr for the late Holocene. The stability of methane hydrates at the feather edge of hydrate stability on the upper continental slope (UCS) is prone to ocean warming and relative sea level (RSL) change. West of Svalbard, methane seeps on the UCS were initially proposed to result from hydrate destabilization resulting from four decades of warming of Atlantic bottom water. Alternatively, it has been proposed that hydrate dissociation was triggered by RSL fall due to isostatic rebound over the past 8,000 yr rather than recent bottom water temperature (BWT) rise. Here, we address these two contrasting hypotheses by simulating the impact of 11,000 yr of BWT and RSL change on hydrates located at the UCS off west Svalbard. Our numerical simulation considers multiphase fluid and heat flow coupled with hydrate formation and dissociation. We used two reconstructions of local ice history (UiT and ICE‐6G_C) that predict contrasting results for the local sea level history. Over the past 8,000 yr, the UiT model predicts a fall in RSL on the UCS, while the ICE‐6G_C model, which provides a better fit to nearby coastal RSL observations, predicts a continuous rise. Our modeling shows that whilst long‐term RSL fall would progressively thin the region of hydrate stability, the abrupt rise in BWT enhances hydrate dissociation. Even in the model with an RSL rise, the increase in BWT causes hydrate destabilization and pore water freshening that matches observations. We conclude that recent ocean warming plays a critical role in hydrate dissociation west of Svalbard regardless of the longer‐term sea level history. Plain Language Summary: Methane hydrate is an ice‐like substance that is stable at the low temperatures and high pressures found in the mud and sand that builds up at the edges of oceans. Hydrate can melt and vent methane gas into the ocean if the ocean warms or sea level falls. Drilling in a region of such venting west of the Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard in 2016 confirmed that it was caused by the melting of hydrate, but the cause of this melting is debated. Proposed causes are ocean warming during 1978–2016, or relative sea level fall since 8,000 yr ago as the ocean floor near Svalbard rose due to the removal of the weight of the melting Svalbard ice sheet. We used a computer model to study the impact of changes in ocean temperature and sea level on this hydrate since 11,000 yr ago. We found that sea level fall causes the hydrate to melt, but there are periods of colder ocean temperatures when it can re‐form. Sea level rise stabilizes the hydrate, but ocean warming can override its effect, leading to the hydrate melting that is inferred during 1978–2016. We conclude that ocean warming played a critical role in hydrate melting. Reliability of grass phytoliths for discriminating different deltaic sub-environments has been assessed on the modern surface sediments collected along the salinity gradient of the Sunderbans delta, India. It has been observed that grass phytolith assemblages can successfully distinguish different deltaic sub-environments especially the true mangrove zones from the mangrove associate and non-mangrove zones with minor overlaps, which further corroborated with the results of discriminant analysis (DA). Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) performed on the surface grass phytolith data show that salinity is the most crucial environmental parameter influencing grass phytolith distribution in the deltaic sub-environments. The potential of modern grass phytolith data in reconstructing past deltaic environmental changes has been further assessed on a late Quaternary fossil phytolith spectra from the Sunderbans spanning a sedimentary record for the last ~13.6 ka. A true mangrove environment with discernible tidal influence has been revealed between 13.6 and 3.9 ka. Absence of true mangrove–indicator grass phytoliths between ~3.9 and 2.2 ka further suggests disappearance of mangrove vegetation from this part of the Sunderbans which might have recolonized during ~2.2–0.8 ka. A mangrove associated or non-mangrove environment with little or no tidal influence came into existence in the study area since 0.8 ka onwards. A comparison with some earlier records suggests that the present grass phytolith-based palaeoenvironmental data shows conformity with the past dynamics in mangrove ecosystem in the east coast of India in respect to relative sea level changes. Here, we describe a new national tide gauge‐based sea level dataset for monitoring sea level changes around Australia, and the novel homogenization methodology used to develop it. Homogenization is a two‐step process that involves the detection of jumps or steps in the data (inhomogeneities) followed by a correction applied to remove the change. This new dataset is called the Australian National Collection of Homogenized Observations of Relative Sea Level (ANCHORS). ANCHORS provides coastal sea levels at hourly resolution with homogenization performed on annual means. ANCHORS is intended to be a national tide gauge‐based sea level dataset to monitor changes in mean sea level and resultant coastal flood frequency changes around Australia. Whilst sea levels are rising around Australia in response to global mean sea level changes, coastal water levels represent a notable gap in the suite of in situ high‐quality datasets available for researchers, governments and industry. Tide gauge datasets are well suited to impact‐based assessments of changes in flood frequency, duration and risk. In this regard, ANCHORS will sit alongside existing satellite‐ and numerical modelling‐based sea level datasets to provide enhanced insights into the physical impacts of sea level rise on Australian coastlines. We have adapted established homogenization techniques to develop a national collection of homogenous long tide gauge records. The dataset comprises 38 tide gauge records from around Australia, varying in length from 34 to 123 years, with an average of 57 years. Coastal marshes provide essential ecosystem services related to biodiversity, water quality, and protection from erosion. As increasing rates of relative sea-level rise affect many coastal marsh systems, a thorough understanding of marsh responses to sea-level change, particularly the migration of marsh–upland boundaries, becomes essential. The goal of this study was to determine precise elevation thresholds associated with coastal marsh, the marsh–upland ecotone, and upland plant communities along Mississippi's Gulf of Mexico coast (diurnal, microtidal). Elevations (NAVD88) were measured using survey-grade Global Navigation Satellite System solutions integrated with high-precision leveling. Plant species were sampled at approximately 1-m intervals along each of thirty-three transects extending from intermediate marsh through the marsh–upland ecotone. Elevation thresholds associated with plant community change were determined based on relevant quartiles of the data. Probabilities of occurrence of each plant community type were computed for elevations at the centimeter scale. Results indicated transitions from marsh to ecotone and ecotone to upland at elevations of approximately 0.40 m and 0.60 m, respectively. Understanding the precise nature of these centimeter-scale dependencies of marsh vegetation on coastal elevation will facilitate spatial modeling of marsh transgression in response to sea-level rise, subsidence, changes in sediment flux, and land use change. The Southern Adriatic is recognized as one of the most seismically active regions of the Central Mediterranean. It hosted the strongest historically known and instrumentally recorded earthquakes in Croatia and Montenegro. We conducted a detailed study of algal rims and tidal notches along the Dubrovnik–Konavle coastal area, aimed to contribute in reconstruction of relative sea level (RSL) change, palaeoearthquakes and neotectonics during the last 4500 years. The RSL reconstruction based on high-resolution geochronology showed that the spatial variability of RSL change is largely controlled by local tectonics, leading generally to an alternation of periods of RSL rise and rapid falls caused by coseismic uplift events. During the interseismic periods RSL rose at rates from 1.03 to 0.7 mm/yr before AD, followed by a slowdown to ~0.43 mm/yr, and reaching ~1.3 mm/yr after 1850s. The only exception relates to a period of slow RSL drop probably related to the 3.2 ka cold event. Rapid RSL falls caused by coseismic uplift indicate the occurrence of several large-scale events during the 4th–6th centuries AD, the 800–1360 cal AD period, and in 1395, with hints of earlier events between 1395 cal BC and 565 cal AD. These instances correspond to either unknown or insufficiently documented earthquakes. Conversely, the earthquakes in 1520 and 1667 have been clearly identified. The most compelling evidence of coseismic uplift is associated with the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake, with an estimated uplift of 40–60 ± 15 cm documented along 40 km of coastline. Analyses of multiple sites with the same high-resolution marker show that Holocene tectonic deformations vary along different fault segments with minimum uplift rates ranging from ~0.3 to ~0.9 mm/yr over ~1.5 ka. The main seismogenic source responsible for coseismic uplifts is attributed to the Dalmatian unit basal thrust and its NE-dipping splays at the Adria-Dinarides boundary. • We provide the relative sea-level reconstruction based on 66 new sea-level index points. • We show significant variability of relative sea-level change due to local tectonic contributions. • New evidence of spatial effects of 1667 AD Dubrovnik earthquake is presented. • The Dalmatian unit basal thrust is a composite seismogenic source responsible for coastal uplifts. • Our data show relative sea-level drop related to 3.2 ka cold event well marked in the Mediterranean. The extensive exposures of Mesozoic rocks along the Atlantic Moroccan margin can offer the best and the most continuous record of Mesozoic sediments and Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous deposits along the Atlantic margin. This study reports the results of high resolution sampling and sedimentary logging of key outcrops to allow for ammonite, calpionellid and nannofossil biostratigraphy, in order to build a new integrated biostratigraphic chart for the uppermost Tithonian to the lowermost upper Barremian. This has been correlated to the offshore record (DSDP Sites 370/416A), which has also been redated using newly described calcareous nannofossil assemblages that confirm a thick and previously undescribed upper Tithonian through Berriasian succession. Calpionellid assemblages, although sparse, show affinities to the Mediterranean Tethys assemblages. Ammonites also show affinities to the Mediterranean Tethys taxa, but the identification of two new species points to periods of endemism during the lower Hauterivian. Calcareous nannofossils show varied affinities; to the North Atlantic Tethys and Mediterranean Tethyan Realms, the Cental Atlantic and short, but distinct cold-water Boreal Realm exchanges during the Berriasian, lower Valanginian and upper Hauterivian which have necessitated the development of a local EAB nannofossil zonation. The faunal affinities, local morphological variations and periods of faunal endemism are attributed to relative sea level changes which influenced the connection between the Essaouira-Agadir Basin (EAB), Central Atlantic and the western Tethyan Realm. A major sedimentary hiatus in the middle part of the Berriasian is recognised in the studied sections based on the biostratigraphy. This is interpreted to record a middle Berriasian unconformity that can be correlated both regionally and globally, due to an important period of tectonic activity associated with the break-up stage of the Atlantic. Fine-grained rocks have historically been interpreted as a product of the settling of fine fractions in low-energy environments. However, recent studies have suggested that in these environments, more dynamic and complex processes operate. These processes involve a much more diverse set of sedimentary processes than those previously assumed. The lithological homogeneity of clayey successions, associated with the obliteration of their primary characteristics by diagenetic and/or weathering processes, makes it difficult to interpret depositional processes and understand the paleoenvironment. To contribute to a better comprehension of the mechanisms of transport and deposition of fine-grained rocks in a siliciclastic mud-dominated succession, as well as their depositional site, the present study aims at the detailed analysis of a continuous drill core. This core contains a thick Devonian succession consisting essentially of shale from the Ponta Grossa Formation (Paraná Basin, Brazil). Throughout the analyzed succession, a wide variety of sedimentary structures have been identified, such as parallel laminations, wave-ripple cross-stratification, hummocky cross-stratification, normal grading, and gutter casts. These structures show the constant performance of high-energy flows, which are configured as important deposition and/or rework agents. The integrated analysis of facies and trace fossils has proven to be more efficient for paleoenvironmental characterization than isolated approaches. This is because facies and ichnofacies (e.g., Cruziana , with its proximal, impoverished, archetypal, and distal expressions; Skolithos and Glossifungites) can be easily correlated, facilitating the identification of facies associations. This approach not only allows for the interpretation of a shallow marine platform with a gentle slope (ramp shelf) paleoenvironment of moderate to high energy, subject to storm wave action, but also enables the identification of the particular characteristics of deposits from different sub-environments (proximal to distal offshore, offshore transition, shoreface to offshore transition, and prodelta) and their deposition mechanisms. One of the major sources of uncertainty affecting vertical land motion (VLM) estimations are discontinuities and trend changes. Trend changes are most commonly caused by seismic deformation, but can also stem from long-term (decadal to multidecadal) surface loading changes or from local origins. Although these issues have been extensively addressed for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data, there is limited knowledge of how such events can be directly detected and mitigated in VLM, derived from altimetry and tide-gauge differences (SATTG). In this study, we present a novel Bayesian approach to automatically and simultaneously detect such events, together with the statistics commonly estimated to characterize motion signatures. Next to GNSS time series, for the first time, we directly estimate discontinuities and trend changes in VLM data inferred from SATTG. We show that, compared to estimating a single linear trend, accounting for such variable velocities significantly increases the agreement of SATTG with GNSS values (on average by 0.36 mm/year) at 339 globally distributed station pairs. The Bayesian change point detection is applied to 606 SATTG and 381 GNSS time series. Observed VLM, which is identified as linear (i.e. where no significant trend changes are detected), has a substantially higher consistency with large-scale VLM effects of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and contemporary mass redistribution (CMR). The standard deviation of SATTG (and GNSS) trend differences with respect to GIA+CMR trends is by 38% (and 48%) lower for time series with constant velocity compared to variable velocities. Given that in more than a third of the SATTG time series variable velocities are detected, the results underpin the importance to account for such features, in particular to avoid extrapolation biases of coastal VLM and its influence on relative sea-level-change determination. The Bayesian approach uncovers the potential for a better characterization of SATTG VLM changes on much longer periods and is widely applicable to other geophysical time series. New 10Be exposure age dating and geomorphological mapping of emerged shoreline features in W Jura and NE Islay throw new light on the regional pattern of ice sheet deglaciation and late-glacial relative sea level change. We conclude that the oldest and highest emerged shorelines in this area were produced ~15.7–16.3 ka, shortly after ice sheet deglaciation ~16.5 ka. It is envisaged that the first incursion of marine waters into coastal areas took place close to a former ice sheet margin that oscillated in position across this part of the Scottish Inner Hebrides. The first evidence of late-glacial marine sedimentation following deglaciation consists of emerged marine terrace fragments and unvegetated gravel beach ridges, the former represented by a prominent glacio-isostatically tilted shoreline that declines in altitude NE to SW, from ~40 m above ordnance datum (OD) in NW Jura to ~19 m OD in central Islay. In W Jura, north of Loch Tarbert, spectacular staircases of up to 55 unvegetated gravel beach ridges were formed shortly after regional deglaciation, possibly within 1 ka. A preliminary estimate of the average rate of relative sea level lowering across W Jura between deglaciation and the Younger Dryas is in the order of ~7 mmyr−1. Geomorphological evidence from Shian Bay, W Jura, indicates a truncation of the late-glacial beach ridge staircases by a large 480-m-long beach ridge (the Colonsay Ridge) at ~14.9 ka, when former relative sea level was at ~18 m OD. This ridge may represent the product of either a stillstand in the progressive lowering of relative sea level during the late-glacial or a reversal. This raises the intriguing possibility of an association between ridge formation and the timing of the well-established global meltwater pulse 1A between ~14.65 and ~14.8 ka. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the Bahariya Formation using 39 rock-cutting samples from the Abu Gharadig Basin in the north Western Desert, Egypt. An approach combining palynomorph composition and palynofacies analysis with lithological composition and geophysical gamma ray log values is used to assess biostratigraphic age constraints, prevalent depositional palaeoenvironments, and relative sea level changes. A moderately diverse assemblage comprised mainly of terrestrial palynomorphs versus minor content of marine palynomorphs is identified. Marker spore and pollen taxa are used to name three interval zones of early Cenomanian, and early-middle Cenomanian ages. Quantitative distribution of particulate organic matter using cluster analysis reveals two palynofacies assemblages: an older assemblage dominated by phytoclasts (mainly wood particles); and a younger assemblage characterised by moderate abundances of amorphous organic matter and phytoclasts. Palynofacies analysis suggests deposition of the Bahariya Formation in fluvio-deltaic to inner neritic shelf environments. Based on the pronounced stratigraphic variations in the particulate organic matter composition, including terrestrial:marine palynomorph ratio, lithological and gamma-ray log data, three complete transgressive-regressive sequences and one incomplete sequence and their systems tracts are defined. The transgressive-regressive trends reflect 3rd order sequences. Additionally, successive changes in relative sea level indicate a continuous rise at the topmost part of the succession. In the Middle Ordovician, a ramp carbonate platform was developed in the Shuntuoguole Low Uplift, Tarim Basin. The depositional facies and sequence stratigraphy were investigated using petrographic observations and Fischer plot analyses to clarify the evolution and distribution of depositional facies within the sequence stratigraphic framework of the Yijianfang Formation. Nine types of microfacies (MF1–MF9) were identified in seven environments on a ramp: (a) peritidal, (b) lagoon, (c) low‐energy bioclastic shoal, (d) shoal, (e) sheltered proximal middle‐ramp, (f) low‐energy bioclastic shoal middle‐ramp, and (g) shoal middle‐ramp. A depositional model was established based on analyses of the depositional facies from the key wells. Fischer plots obtained based on fourth‐order cycles identified from continuous wavelet transform of gamma‐ray logging data were analysed. The results show that the changes in relative sea level, as indicated by Fischer plots, are highly consistent with the evolution of paleo‐water depths indicated by microfacies types, microfacies associations, and geochemical indicators. Four third‐order depositional sequences (SQ1–4) were identified according to variations in accommodation space. The accommodation space and its growth rate during the SQ2 transgressive period were the largest, it manifested as rapid landward migration of facies, and sudden changes in the gamma‐ray logging values at the maximum flooding surface. This feature can be easily compared across the entire region. The results of this study indicate that changes in relative sealevel in the Yijianfang Formation are consistent with the global sea‐level change curve, which suggests that sea‐level fluctuation is the main factoir controlling sequence architecture and the evolution of depositional facies. The land surface beneath the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets is isostatically suppressed by the mass of the overlying ice. Accurate computation of the land elevation in the absence of ice is important when considering, for example, regional geodynamics, geomorphology, and ice sheet behaviour. Here, we use contemporary compilations of ice thickness and lithospheric effective elastic thickness to calculate the fully re-equilibrated isostatic response of the solid Earth to the complete removal of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets. We use an elastic plate flexure model to compute the isostatic response to the unloading of the modern ice sheet loads, and a self-gravitating viscoelastic Earth model to make an adjustment for the remaining isostatic disequilibrium driven by ice mass loss since the Last Glacial Maximum. Feedbacks arising from water loading in areas situated below sea level after ice sheet removal are also taken into account. In addition, we quantify the uncertainties in the total isostatic response associated with a range of elastic and viscoelastic Earth properties. We find that the maximum change in bed elevation following full re-equilibration occurs over the centre of the landmasses and is +783 m in Greenland and +936 m in Antarctica. By contrast, areas around the ice margins experience up to 123 m of lowering due to a combination of sea level rise, peripheral bulge collapse, and water loading. The computed isostatic response fields are openly accessible and have a number of applications for studying regional geodynamics, landscape evolution, cryosphere dynamics, and relative sea level change. The article presents a study which showed that modern global mean sea level (GMSL) rise is anomalous relative to any natural variability in ice volumes over the past 4000 years. Topics discussed include the need for an accurate record of preindustrial sea level to contextualize modern GMSL rise with respect to natural variability, modern sea-level elevation measurements, and predicted sea-level change in Mallorca.

Extensive research into the evolution of wave‐dominated estuaries has been documented since the 1960s. However, there has only been limited research on the prograding bay‐head deltas that are the primary drivers for the rate and stage of estuary evolution. This paper presents the findings of a high‐resolution spatial study into the evolution of the Macquarie Rivulet bayhead delta in the Lake Illawarra barrier estuary. The delta's evolution has been established based on sedimentological analysis of 74 cores, two 14C ages and 45 amino acid racemization ages. This study intersected two Pleistocene and 10 Holocene sedimentary facies associations representing both the retrogradational and progradational phases of delta development. The distribution of bayhead delta facies associations in shallow barrier estuaries is initially controlled by the antecedent morphology, but, in contrast to deeper estuaries, this influence decreases as sedimentation proceeds. Changing relative sea level also has a major control on facies distribution with transgressive facies deposited as relative sea‐level rises being replaced by prograding deltaic facies during the highstand and subsequent minor relative sea‐level fall. Fluvial sediment supply and river flood events affect the rate of delta progradation, and produce low and high flow sediment deposits within the overall deltaic sequence. The low tidal flux in barrier estuaries, the muddy cohesive nature of the sediments and the prevalence of bioturbation means that primary sedimentary structures are rarely preserved in these bayhead delta facies. The depositional model of bayhead delta evolution shown by the Macquarie Rivulet delta would be widely applicable to other similar barrier estuary settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
