Abstract

Optical waveguide amplifiers based on polymer materials offer a low-cost alternative for inorganic waveguide amplifiers. Due to the fact that their refractive index is similar to that of standard optical fibers, they can be easily coupled to existing fibers with low coupling losses. Doping the polymer with rare-earth ions that yield optical gain is not straightforward, as the rare-earth salts are poorly soluble in the polymer matrix. This review article focuses on two different approaches to dope a polymer waveguide with rare-earth ions. The first approach is based on organic cage-like complexes that encapsulate the rare-earth ion and are designed to provide coordination sites to bind the rare-earth ion and to shield it from the surrounding matrix. These complexes also offer the possibility of attaching a highly absorbing antenna group, which increases the pump efficiency significantly. The second approach to fabricate rare-earth doped polymer waveguides is obtained by combining the excellent properties of SiO[sub 2] as a host for rare-earth ions with the easy processing of polymers. Abstract

The main challenge in nanotechnology resides in the precise spatial (self-) organization of nanoscale components onto surfaces. The molecular printboards, monolayers of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), can be employed to bind suitable guest molecules onto a surface with molecular accuracy based on the host-guest interactions. Several lanthanides and their organic complexes are known to exhibit photoluminescent properties. Based on this host-guest interaction, the first example of the controllable SAMs of Eu3+ complexes is prepared on the molecular printboards and is successful to demonstrate the stoichiometry of the efficient energy transfer pair with a close proximity proved by local image spectra and surface emission life-time. To further maximize the optical amplification, self-assembled organic/ nanoparticles multilayers based on multivalent supramolecular host-guest interactions between dendritic guest molecules and host-modified TiO2 particles can result in a strong absorption and efficient sensitization thin film. The stable positioning nanostructure is used as antireflecting layer for enhancing the solar cell UV conversion studied with the photo to current conversion efficiency.

28. The First Synthesis and Characterisation of Elusive cone 1,2-Diformyl Tetralkoxycalix[4]arenes and their Derivatives

Abstract

The synthesis and isolation of elusive tetralkoxycalix[4]arenes in the cone conformation and bearing two formyl groups in proximal (1,2) positions at the upper rim are described for the first time. They were obtained as a mixture with the distal (1,3) regioisomers by optimizing the Gross formylation reaction on the tetralkoxycalix[4]arenes. After reduction to the corresponding alcohols, the compdounds could be isolated and oxidized to 1,2-diformyl and 1,2-diacid tetralkoxycalix[4]arenes. These 1,2-difunctionalized derivatives are useful intermediates for the synthesis of calixarene-based molecular receptors having proximal binding groups.
