The Firecrest (Regulus ignicapilla) is a regular, but small-number breeder in spruce and coniferous forests in the mountainous and hilly areas of Hungary, but is found in all parts of the country during migration. Despite this, only sporadic field observation data and ringing results in Western Hungary have been published so far. The aim of this study was to investigate the migration of this species on a national scale. In our work, we processed field observation data collected on the Csanádi-hát and capture-recapture data from three bird ringing stations (Szalonna, Tömörd and Ócsa) from the second half of the 1980s to 2021. We also used archive published field observation data from different parts of Hungary. Our results show that the spring migration of the species in the study areas took place between mid-March and late April – early May, and its timing did not differ significantly between regions. In contrast, the autumn migration was earlier in mountainous areas than in lowland areas. The small numbers and short duration of recaptured birds suggested a rapid migration in both periods. In autumn, we obtained a significant difference between the annual number of birds captured in Tömörd and Szalonna. In both periods, males were caught in greater numbers than females. In southern Hungary, the timing of migration in spring has not changed, but in autumn the species migrated earlier than a few decades ago.

The Afrotropical representatives of the hover fly genusMesembriusRondani, 1857 (Diptera) are divided into two subgenera, namelyMesembriuss.s. andVadonimyiaSéguy, 1951 and, in this present work, the subgenus Mesembrius s.s. is revised. A total of 23Mesembriuss.s. species are recognised for the Afrotropics. Known species are re-described and six species new to science are described:Mesembrius arcuatussp. nov.,M. copelandisp. nov.,M. longipilosussp. nov.,M. sulcussp. nov.,M. tibialissp. nov.andM. vockerothisp. nov.Mesembrius africanus(Verrall, 1898) is considered a junior synonym ofM. senegalensis(Macquart, 1842),M. cteniferHull, 1941 a junior synonym ofM. caffer(Loew, 1858),M. lagopus(Loew, 1869) a junior synonym ofM. capensis(Macquart, 1842) andM. platytarsisCurran, 1929 a junior synonym ofM. simplicipesCurran, 1929. The females ofMesembrius chapiniCurran, 1939,M. rexCurran, 1927 andM. regulus(Hull, 1937) are described for the first time. Lectotypes are designated forMesembrius caffer,M. capensis,M. cyanipennis(Bezzi, 1915),M. minor(Bezzi, 1915),M. senegalensis,M. strigilatus(Bezzi, 1912) andM. tarsatus(Bigot, 1883). Separate identification keys for males and females are presented. We obtained 236 DNA barcodes for 18 species. The relationships amongst the differentMesembriusspecies are briefly discussed, based on morphological and DNA barcode data.

This article will suggest that scholars have overlooked a model plausibly lurking in the background of Col 2:15 which parallels the triumphal death of Christ: namely, the crucifixion of Regulus. Regulus was a general who achieved a near-mythic status during the First Punic War by his sacrificial death, in which his perseverance on the gibbet was seen as even greater than riding in the victor’s car. Tertullian credited Regulus as having set the precedent for enduring the torments of the cross, while others declared him as having overcome through death not only his human foes but also Lady Fortune. Regulus’ story enjoyed so much widespread popularity it was admitted in the curriculum of Roman schools by the middle of the first century CE. Because Regulus’ epic contains low-hanging fruit, ripe for comparison with Christ’s crucifixion, Christians drew upon the story of Regulus from at least as early as Tertullian, Minucius Felix, Arnobius, and Augustine. Nevertheless, scholars have overlooked the possible parallels with Regulus’ story and Christ’s triumphal death in Col 2:15. I will first provide a composite depiction of Regulus’ military life and sacrificial death along with its reported ramifications in order to tease out similarities and differences with Col 2:15 and finally conclude with comments concerning the significance of including the legend as additional background for the verse. In short, I will propose that reading Regulus’ story in comparison with Col 2:15 supports an anti-imperial and/or a supra-imperial reading of the letter.

O presente trabalho faz parte da linha de pesquisa “Linguagem e Humanidades” do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) e tem como objetivo principal investigar, a partir de uma metodologia qualitativa, aspectos relacionados ao uso do latim extempore (ou neolatim) desenvolvido para além dos limites da literatura clássica, para a tradução do Le Petit Prince de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1943) para o latim. Sendo um texto moderno, essa obra apresenta um vocabulário repleto de termos para designar objetos estranhos ao universo cultural em que o latim – uma língua da antiguidade – prosperou como língua de uso e cultura. Nesta dissertação, pretendemos avaliar como se opera a tradução desses vocábulos na versão latina dessa obra, o Regulus(2001), bem como as estratégias mobilizadas pelo tradutor para exprimir tais referentes em latim e as repercussões semânticas que se observavam como decorrente dessas estratégias. Para realizar a pesquisa, apresentamos um estudo inicial, em que refletimos acerca das variedades do latim, a partir dos apontamentos de Clackson e Horrocks (2007) e Janson (2004), caracterizando o sermo litterarius como a variedade de referência dessa obra. Na sequência, apresentamos um estudo do Regulus, destacando e analisando o léxico relacionados a referentes modernos, tais como o avião, nomes de armas de fogo e topônimos. Fundamentamos a nossa análise em preceitos da Teoria da Tradução como os recursos de zooming, adição, subtração, domesticação e estrangeirização, tendo como base teórica autores como Schleiermacher (1813), Venuti (1995) e Nida (1964). A pesquisa explorou o uso típico da língua para a observação de grupos semânticos que auxiliam na interpretação dos neologismos, observando o latim revitalizado a partir da relação entre os elementos disponíveis no repertório linguístico. Os resultados sugerem que há uma prevalência de perífrases para significar os referentes modernos no polissistema latino, de modo que ocorre um resgate de termos familiares ao sermo litterarius para a revitalização do latim extemporâneo The present work belongs to the research line “Language and Humanities” of the PostGraduation in Linguistics Program of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and its main objective is to investigate, from a qualitative methodology, aspects related to the use of the extempore Latin, (or neo-Latin) developed beyond the limits of classical literature, for the translation of Le petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1943) into Latin. Being an open text, this work presents a text full of terms to designate objects foreign to the cultural universe in which Latin – a language of antiquity – prospered as a language of use and culture. In this dissertation, we intend to evaluate how the translation of these words operates in the latin version of the book, Regulus (2001), as well as strategies mobilized by the translator to express such referents in Latin and the semantic repercussions that were observed as a result of these strategies. To carry out the research, we present an initial study, in which we reflect on the varieties of Latin, based on the notes of Clackson and Horrocks (2007) and Janson (2004), characterizing the sermo litterarius as a reference variation of this work. Later, we present a study of Regulus, highlighting and analyzing the lexicon related to referents, such as a plane, names of firearms and place names. We base our analysis on precepts of Translation Theory such as the analysis of zoom, addition, subtraction, domestication and foreignization resources, based on theoretical authors such as Schleiermacher (1813), Venuti (1995) and Nida (1964). The research explored the typical usage of the language for the observation of semantic groups that help the interpretation of neologisms, observing the revitalized Latin from the relationship between elements available in the linguistic repertoire. The results suggest that there is a prevalence of periphrases to signify modern referents in the Latin polysystem, so that there is a rescue of terms familiar to the sermo litterarius for the revitalization of extemporaneous Latin.

REGULUS is an Iodine-based electric propulsion system. It has been designed and manufactured at the Italian company Technology for Propulsion and Innovation SpA (T4i). REGULUS integrates the Magnetically Enhanced Plasma Thruster (MEPT) and its subsystems, namely electronics, fluidic, and thermo-structural in a volume of 1.5 U. The mass envelope is 2.5 kg, including propellant. REGULUS targets CubeSat platforms larger than 6 U and CubeSat carriers. A thrust T = 0.60 mN and a specific impulse Isp = 600 s are achieved with an input power of P = 50 W; the nominal total impulse is Itot = 3000 Ns. REGULUS has been integrated on-board of the UniSat-7 satellite and its In-orbit Demonstration (IoD) is currently ongoing. The principal topics addressed in this work are: (i) design of REGULUS, (ii) comparison of the propulsive performance obtained operating the MEPT with different propellants, namely Xenon and Iodine, (iii) qualification and acceptance tests, (iv) plume analysis, (v) the IoD.

Many animals migrate seasonally between breeding and non-breeding territories and these annual movements can have a profound effect on population genetic structure. We genotyped 281 individuals from 11 populations at seven variable microsatellite loci and compared patterns of neutral genetic differentiation and neutral genetic diversity among migratory and resident breeding populations of the Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa), a widespread North American songbird. We predicted that resident populations would exhibit greater genetic differentiation and lower genetic diversity than migratory populations because migratory behaviour is thought to enhance gene flow. The magnitude of genetic differentiation and genetic diversity among migratory and resident populations was comparable, and the greatest levels of differentiation were observed for pairwise comparisons between Ontario and all western populations. Distance-based redundancy models and redundancy models revealed that patterns of neutral genetic differentiation and neutral genetic diversity follow an isolation-by-distance model and are not correlated with migratory behaviour. Overall it appears that genetic patterns are more closely associated with Pleistocene glacial history as proposed in a previous study.

REGULUS is a propulsion platform for CubeSats. It integrates the Magnetically Enhanced Thruster (MET) and its subsystems (i.e., fluidic line, electronics, and thermo-structural components) in a 2U envelope of weight lower than 3 kg. MET is a RF cathode-less thruster capable of providing thrust in the range 300 μN to 900 μN, with maximum specific impulse of 900 s and maximum operation power of 60 W. The performance has been measured with a dedicated thrust balance, when the thruster is operated with 0.1 mg/s of Xenon gas. REGULUS: (i) is compatible with thermal, mechanical and electrical interfaces of the CubeSat platforms available in the marked, (ii) it relies on COTS components to abate the recurrent costs, and (iii) it is based on a passive thermal control system. The main framework of application of the REGULUS platform is the propulsion of medium-to-large CubeSats (from 6U up to 27U). Such capability is here demonstrated by comparing MET with other thrusters for CubeSats offered in the market. The feasibility of two possible mission scenarios, namely drag compensation and constellation deployment, has been verified through preliminary orbit calculations. The REGULUS platform can compensate the effects of atmospheric drag on a 6U CubeSat in a 400 km altitude orbit for years. Besides, by exploiting the natural drift of the ascending node caused by the second zonal harmonic of the terrestrial gravity field, a CubeSat constellation can be deployed through several planes in some months employing small fractions of the onboard propellant.

Two females of Leptochilus regulus (de Saussure, 1855) were observed nesting in reed stalks of a Fabre’s hive serving as a block of trap nests in Crimea, with the timekeeping of all their nesting behaviours. The building material used by the females to separate the nesting cavity into the cells consisted of pellets of dry soil, gravel particles, and small fragments of tree bark, leaves, and thin stems. Females rapidly carried these items collected in 1.0–1.5 m from the nests. They bonded only the last portions of the building material in each “partition” with a very small amount of mud. An additional amount of unbonded building material items was deposited into the nest after sealing the last nest cell. Females hunted exclusively for small larvae of an anobiid beetle (Coleoptera, Anobiidae); they stored 19–37 prey items per cell. Hunting and provisioning occupied the largest portion of the females’ time budget. Duration of hunting flights was different between the females. The nests of both females contained three brood cells. Cocoons of Chrysis ragusae De Stefani, 1888 (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae) were found in the nests; females of this cuckoo wasp species were also recorded entering the host nests at the stage of provisioning, acting apparently as inquilines. The cocoon ultrastructure of L. regulus is illustrated and discussed.

New Space technology for Small Satellites has greatly advanced in the past five years. These progresses shall match with a swift integration and testing phase, to be readily marketable, therefore IOD missions are essential to expedite project outcomes. GAUSS has started working on Small Satellites since 1990s, with its first satellite, UNISAT, launched in 2000. In 2013, UNISAT-5 was the first platform to accomplish in-orbit-release of third-party satellites, with UNISAT-6 following in less than one year. UNISAT-7 is the latest addition to the UNISAT series: a 32kg microsatellite designed and manufactured by GAUSS Srl (a spin-off company of Scuola di Ingegneria Aerospaziale, Sapienza University of Roma), built from scratch thanks to the extensive experience gained with past missions. Launch is scheduled in in Q1 2021. It is the most complex mission ever flown by GAUSS, and it includes several original GAUSS subsystems developed for Earth Observation, sat-to-ground optical links, navigation, power, RF, and Smallsat in-orbit-deployments. All these subsystems are tested in orbit in specific IOD missions. Moreover, UNISAT-7 integrates a precise ADCS solution and a newly developed low-thrust, electric propulsion system named REGULUS, from Italian Company Technology for Propulsion and Innovation (T4i), which will allow the satellite to modify its final orbit, as well as to execute housekeeping maneuvers for drag compensation. REGULUS is a propulsive unit based on MEPT (Magnetically Enhanced Plasma Thruster) technology developed inside the propulsion laboratory of the University of Padua. T4i, born as a Spin-off of the University of Padua, industrialized this technology in order to make it fly. REGULUS is T4i very first product that has ever flown into space. Its envelope is 1.5 U of volume, it is equipped with solid iodine propellant and its main features are a thrust level of 0.55 mN and Isp of 550 s at 50 W of input power, and wet mass of 2.5 kg at 3000 Ns of Itot. REGULUS is designed to serve nanosatellite platforms from 6U to 24U and CubeSat carriers. The integration took place in GAUSS white chamber in Rome in late 2020 and the launch is scheduled in March 2021 from Baikonur as a secondary payload of Soyuz-2-1a/Fregat. Performances of REGULUS propulsion system are evaluated after the initial commissioning of UNISAT-7. This key IOD mission paves the way to next UNISAT programs, where GAUSS microsatellites will be able to execute orbital maneuvers before any single CubeSat deployment, in order to efficiently shape customized constellations by using UNISATs as autonomous vehicles for in-orbit-deployment. MotivationTranscriptional regulation is performed by transcription factors (TF) binding to DNA in context-dependent regulatory regions and determines the activation or inhibition of gene expression. Current methods of transcriptional regulatory networks inference, based on one or all of TF, regions and genes activity measurements require a large number of samples for ranking the candidate TF-gene regulation relations and rarely predict whether they are activations or inhibitions. We hypothesize that transcriptional regulatory networks can be inferred from fewer samples by (1) fully integrating information on TF binding, gene expression and regulatory regions accessibility, (2) reducing data complexity and (3) using biology-based logical constraints to determine the global consistency of the candidate TF-gene relations and qualify them as activations or inhibitions.ResultsWe introduce Regulus, a method which computes TF-gene relations from gene expressions, regulatory region activities and TF binding sites data, together with the genomic locations of all entities. After aggregating gene expressions and region activities into patterns, data are integrated into a RDF endpoint. A dedicated SPARQL query retrieves all potential relations between expressed TF and genes involving active regulatory regions. These TF-region-gene relations are then filtered using a logical consistency check translated from biological knowledge, also allowing to qualify them as activation or inhibition. Regulus compares favorably to the closest network inference method, provides signed relations consistent with public databases and, when applied to biological data, identifies both known and potential new regulators. Altogether, Regulus is devoted to transcriptional network inference in settings where samples are scarce and cell populations are closely related. Alexandria of Egypt was founded by Alexander the Great. The layout of the town was based on a grid of streets, crossing at right angle. The main street was the Dromos, also known as Canopic Road. Here we consider this road and the astronomical orientations of it, as given by literature. Solar orientations had been considered by Martin Erdmann in 1883, in the framework of a theory proposed by Heinrich Nissen in 1869. Nissen, defined by Clive Ruggles as one of first modern archaeoastronomers, answered proposing an orientation according to the rising of Canopus and Regulus, the heart of the Lion. More recently, the orientation of the Canopic Road was linked to the sunrise on Alexander's birthday. However, in this case, chronology becomes relevant for the conversion from a lunisolar calendar to the proleptic Julian calendar. Actually, it is impossible to give the precise date of Alexander's birthday.

The City of God begins as an apologia for the uneven distribution of human suffering. Augustinian justice follows the classical definition of giving what is due. Yet, the recipients of life and death do not allow us to reflect on justice as “just deserts.” Instead, we can best see Augustinian justice in relation to mercy. I focus on Romulus and Regulus, figures through which Augustine directs us toward the truly praiseworthy and blameworthy in great deeds and their doers. In studying these portraits—retellings of ancient Roman myths—a vision of Augustine’s political theory emerges that shows us what he takes to be the most important political virtue of misericordia.

Mass transfer in an interacting binary will often strip the mass donor of its entire envelope and spin up the mass gainer to near critical rotation. The nearby B-type star Regulus represents a binary in the post-mass transfer stage: it is a rapid rotator with a very faint companion in a 40 d orbit. Here we present the results of a search for the spectral features of the stripped-down star in an extensive set of high S/N and high resolution spectra obtained with the CFHT/ESPaDOnS and TBL/NARVAL spectrographs. We first determine revised orbital elements in order to set accurate estimates of the orbital Doppler shifts at the times of observation. We then calculate cross-correlation functions of the observed and model spectra, and we search for evidence of the companion signal in the residuals after removal of the strong primary component. We detect a weak peak in the co-added residuals that has the properties expected for a faint pre-white dwarf. We use the dependence of the peak height and width on assumed secondary velocity semiamplitude to derive the semiamplitude, which yields masses of $M_1/M_\odot = 3.7 \pm 1.4$ and $M_2/M_\odot = 0.31 \pm 0.10$ (assuming orbital inclination equals the spin inclination of Regulus). We estimate the pre-white dwarf temperature $T_{\rm eff} = (20 \pm 4)$~kK through tests with differing temperature model spectra, and we find the radius $R_2/R_\odot = 0.061 \pm 0.011$ from the component temperatures and the flux ratio associated with the amplitude of the signal in the cross-correlation residuals., Accepted for publication in ApJ

REGULUS is an electric propulsion (EP) system for CubeSats at TRL8 and now waiting for the IoD flight in late 2020. REGULUS system is provided for integration with all electronics, fluidic line, iodine tank and structures for total mass below 3 kg. Thanks in particular to the Magnetically Enhanced RF Plasma Thruster (MEPT) technology and the use of iodine propellant, the system can provide 3000Ns of total impulse in a 93.8 x 95.0 x 150.0 mm volume performance, fitting in a 1.5U Cubesat. REGULUS includes the whole propulsion package for integration in CubeSats and MicroSats as well as small CubeSat carriers. The system is composed by the thruster, the electronics (PPUs and PCU) the fluidic line and the tank. The main features of REGULUS are the presence of a simple architecture, a thruster with no neutralizer and grids, no high DC-voltage PPU and the use of solid iodine as propellant, that can be substituted with Xenon fluidic line and tank when required. Its first mission will be onboard of Unisat-7 by GAUSS. The flight will take place in late 2020 in a Soyuz flight. During the mission, REGULUS will allow Unisat-7 to perform an orbit descending maneuver, drag compensation in VLEO and decommissioning.

Commagene was an independent and wealthy kingdom in the east of present Turkey from ca. 160 to 20 BCE. A text referred to as Nomos (Dörner) describes the astro-religion of Commagene (Crijns). The text on the Egyptian Rosetta Stone describes the Ptolemaic astro-religion (Rosetta Stone Online Project). It is shown here that the Rosetta text is a precursor of the Nomos, based on textual and astronomical evidence. The coronation dates as mentioned in both texts display a similar configuration in the sky as substantiated by the configuration on the Lion Horoscope at the top of Mt. Nemrud. Not only the date can be calculated, but also the precise time. The time is determined by an annual phenomenon of the marker star Sirius and Regulus, respectively. The latter has been overseen by scholars and underlines the importance of having at least a basic understanding of archaeoastronomy. These unnoticed similarities indicate that the astro-religions of the Middle East are not stand alone cults. The significant similarities point at a shared heritage i.e., a star cult dating maybe as far back as the era of the Fertile Crescent at the dawn of mankind.

One species of the louse genus Philopterus Nitzsch, 1818 is redescribed and illustrated: Philopterus acrocephalus Carriker, 1949 ex Acrocephalus luscinius (Quoy & Gaimard, 1830), A. melanopogon (Temminck, 1823), A. scirpaceus (Hermann, 1804), A. schoenobaenus (Linnaeus, 1758), Iduna aedon rufescens Stegmann, 1929, I. rama (Sykes, 1832), Locustella sp. and L. ochotensis (von Middendorff, 1853). Philopterus acrocephalus represents the first species of the Philopterus -complex recorded in the family Locustellidae Bonaparte, 1854. Philopterus gustafssoni sp. nov. is described ex Regulus regulus (Linnaeus, 1758), R. regulus regulus (Linnaeus, 1758), R. regulus azoricus Seebohm, 1883, R. regulus buturlini von Loudon, 1911, R. regulus sanctaemariae Vaurie, 1954, R. regulus tristis Pleske, 1892 and R. ignicapillus (Temminck, 1820). Descriptions of both species are amended with genetic data, DNA sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I, nuclear hyp and TMEDE6 ; concatenated sequences are compared to the morphologically nearest species with genetic data available, Philopterus citrinellae (Schrank, 1776) and Philopterus fringillae (Scopoli, 1772). Holotype of Philopterus reguli (Denny, 1842) is pronounced to be a straggler, determination of other known material from Regulidae is changed for Philopterus gustafssoni sp. nov.

Polarization in stars was first predicted by Chandrasekhar [1] who calculated a substantial linear polarization at the stellar limb for a pure electron-scattering atmosphere. This polarization will average to zero when integrated over a spherical star but could be detected if the symmetry is broken, for example by the eclipse of a binary companion. Nearly 50 years ago, Harrington and Collins [2] modeled another way of breaking the symmetry and producing net polarization - the distortion of a rapidly rotating hot star. Here we report the first detection of this effect. Observations of the linear polarization of Regulus, with two different high-precision polarimeters, range from +42 parts-per-million (ppm) at a wavelength of 741 nm to -22 ppm at 395 nm. The reversal from red to blue is a distinctive feature of rotation-induced polarization. Using a new set of models for the polarization of rapidly rotating stars we find that Regulus is rotating at 96.5$\substack{+0.6-0.8}$% of its critical angular velocity for breakup, and has an inclination greater than 76.5 degrees. The rotation axis of the star is at a position angle of 79.5$\pm$0.7 degrees. The conclusions are independent of, but in good agreement with, the results of previously published interferometric observations of Regulus [3]. This article proposes a reinterpretation of Turner’s Regulus (1827; 1838), an enigmatic painting named after a legendary Roman general whom the Carthaginians, cutting off his eyelids and placing him in the direct light of the sun, first blinded and then killed. “Reason Dazzled”, which takes its title from a suggestive phrase in Foucault’s account of unreason, reads the painting as an attempt to stage a certain crisis in the Enlightenment, a movement that traditionally identified both light and sight with reason. It takes the picture to be emblematic of the complex, intimate relationship between all-seeing and unseeing states, and relates this to a certain experience, in the early nineteenth century, of the aesthetic of the sublime: to see nothing but light is to see nothing. The article explores this relationship between sight and blindness, in the first instance, through the violent responses the painting provoked in the nineteenth century, especially those of John Ruskin and one Walter Stephenson. After reconstructing their reactions, the article revisits debates about the precise scene the painting depicts, arguing that the composition is best grasped as a kind of “rebus”. Finally, emphasising the apocalyptic dimension of the picture, and its powerful assault on the spectator’s eye, it returns to the claim that, contradicting the tenets of the Enlightenment, this composition demonstrates, at the level both of form and content, the blinding or death-dealing effect of too much light.

The aim of the present article is to outline the role of Marcus Atilius Regulus, who appears as an exemplum of heroism in St Augustine’s De civitate Dei. He is presented against a background of Carthaginian double references (i.e., both to history and to Virgil’s Aeneid) and in the light of Augustine’s reflections on time, on the specificity and function of the past, and on the memory as expressed in his Confessiones.
