Abstract

A new quantum mechanical approach has been applied to isomeric radicals from the addition of hydrogen atoms to thymine. Post-Hartree-Fock or density functional electronic computations are included in the computational protocol. Hybrid Hartree-Fock/density functional models gave reliable results, and there was good agreement between the computed hyperfine coupling constants and experimental data.

Abstract

The conformational behavior of a tyrosine dipeptide analog, MeCO-Tyr-NHMe, has been investigated by d. functional methods using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) for the description of solvent effects. This study points out the interplay of backbone and side chain contributions in detg. the relative stabilities of energy min. In particular, stabilizing interactions between the NH bond and the arom. ring have a significant effect. The topol. of the potential energy surface is significantly modified in aq. soln. due to a general widening of low energy regions and to a stabilization of helical structures.

48. Conformational Behavior of Macromolecules in Solution. Homopolypeptides of α-Aminoisobutyric Acid as Test Cases

Abstract

Solvent effects on the conformational preferences of homopolypeptides constituted by α-aminoisobutyric acid (polyAib) have been investigated coupling the polarizable continuum model (PCM) either to a quantum mechanical (PBE0/6-31G(d)) or to a molecular−mechanical (Amber) representation of the solute. The results allow a deeper insight into the influence of the solvent on the 310/α-helix equilibrium in polyAib and show that PCM/Amber is a useful tool to study the conformational preferences of large peptides in condensed phase. As a matter of fact, all the PCM/Amber results are close to their PCM/PBE0 counterparts, except for some underestimation of the absolute solvation energies in polar solvents.
