Glass fragments found in crime scenes may constitute important forensic evidence when properly analyzed, for example, to determine their origin. This analysis could be greatly helped by having a large and diverse database of glass fragments and by using it for constructing reliable machine learning (ML)-based glass classification models. Ideally, the samples that make up this database should be analyzed by a single accurate and standardized analytical technique. However, due to differences in equipment across laboratories, this is not feasible. With this in mind, in this work, we investigated if and how measurement performed at different laboratories on the same set of glass fragments could be combined in the context of ML. First, we demonstrated that elemental analysis methods such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), laser ablation induct i v e l y coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS), particle-induced Gamma-ray emission (PIGE), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and prompt Gamma-ray neutron activation analysis (PGAA) could each produce lab-specific ML-based classification models. Next, we determined rules for the successf u l combinations of data from different laboratories and techniques and demonstrated that when followed, they give rise to improved models, and conversely, poor combinations wi l l lead to poor-performing models. Thus, the combination of PIXE and LA-ICP-MS improves the performances by similar to 10-15%, while combining PGAA with other techniques provides poorer performances in comparison with the lab-specific models. Finally, we demonstrated that the poor performances of the SEM-EDS technique, sti l l in use by law enforcement agencies, could be greatly improved by replacing SEM-EDS measurements for Fe and Ca by PIX E measurements for these elements. These findings suggest a process whereby forensic laboratories using different elemental analysis techniques could upload their data into a unified database and get reliable classification based on lab-agnostic models. This in tur n brings us closer to a more exhaustive extraction of information from glass fragment evidence and furthermore may form the basis for international-wide collaboration between law enforcement agencies.

The need for self-referencing is extremely important in the field of biosensing. In this manuscript, we report on the study, design, and validation of a dual-region self-referencing fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance biosensor. One region is intended to measure and monitor the binding events of the biological sample under test, while the other one is designed to be used as a reference channel to compensate for external factors, such as bulk refractive index modifications and temperature oscillations, that can negatively affect the biomolecular interaction measurement. Two different configurations for the biosensor probe are presented and investigated here, both theoretically and experimentally. First, the theoretical performance of the proposed biosensor probes, in terms of surface plasmon resonance wavelength shift, was simulated using a numerical model. Afterward, they were experimentally validated in sucrose-water solutions and showed a response to refractive index and temperature changes with sensitivities up to 2000 nm/RIU and 1.559 nm/°C, respectively. Finally, an aptamer-based bioassay and a high-resolution melting assay were successfully implemented on the two proposed configurations, demonstrating the feasibility of analyzing the binding events and measuring other external signal modifications simultaneously using the same biosensor probe. ispartof: ACS SENSORS vol:7 issue:11 pages:3360-3368 ispartof: location:United States status: published

The accurate identification of the three-dimensional quantitative shape of a cell nucleus is now possible without fluorescent staining by applying computational segmentation to refractive index tomograms recorded in the flow cytometry mode., Quantitative phase imaging has gained popularity in bioimaging because it can avoid the need for cell staining, which, in some cases, is difficult or impossible. However, as a result, quantitative phase imaging does not provide the labelling of various specific intracellular structures. Here we show a novel computational segmentation method based on statistical inference that makes it possible for quantitative phase imaging techniques to identify the cell nucleus. We demonstrate the approach with refractive index tomograms of stain-free cells reconstructed using tomographic phase microscopy in the flow cytometry mode. In particular, by means of numerical simulations and two cancer cell lines, we demonstrate that the nucleus can be accurately distinguished within the stain-free tomograms. We show that our experimental results are consistent with confocal fluorescence microscopy data and microfluidic cyto-fluorimeter outputs. This is a remarkable step towards directly extracting specific three-dimensional intracellular structures from the phase contrast data in a typical flow cytometry configuration.

The bright, saturated iridescent colours of feathers are commonly produced by single and multi-layers of nanostructured melanin granules (melanosomes), air and keratin matrices, surrounded by an outer keratin cortex of varying thicknesses. The role of the keratin cortex in colour production remains unclear, despite its potential to act as a thin film or absorbing layer. We use electron microscopy, optical simulations and oxygen plasma-mediated experimental cortex removal to show that differences in keratin cortex thickness play a significant role in producing colours. The results indicate that keratin cortex thickness determines the position of the major reflectance peak (hue) from nanostructured melanosomes of common pheasant ( Phasianus colchicus ) feathers. Specifically, the common pheasant has appropriate keratin cortex thickness to produce blue and green structural colours. This finding identifies a general principle of structural colour production and sheds light on the processes that shaped the evolution of brilliant iridescent colours in the common pheasant.

Atomic layer deposition offers outstanding film uniformity and conformality on substrates with high aspect ratio features. These qualities are essential for mixed-halide perovskite films applied in tandem solar cells, transistors and light-emitting diodes. The optical and electronic properties of mixed-halide perovskites can be adjusted by adjusting the ratios of different halides. Biomass burning emissions often contain brown carbon (BrC), which represents a large family of light-absorbing organics that are chemically complex, thus making it difficult to estimate their absorption of incoming solar radiation, resulting in large uncertainties in the estimation of the global direct radiative effect of aerosols. Here we investigate the contribution of BrC to the total light absorption of biomass burning aerosols over the South-East Atlantic Ocean with different optical models, utilizing a suite of airborne measurements from the ORACLES 2018 campaign. An effective refractive index of black carbon (BC), meBC=1.95+ikeBC, that characterizes the absorptivity of all absorbing components at 660 nm wavelength was introduced to facilitate the attribution of absorption at shorter wavelengths, i.e. 470 nm. Most values of the imaginary part of the effective refractive index, keBC, were larger than those commonly used for BC from biomass burning emissions, suggesting contributions from absorbers besides BC at 660 nm. The TEM-EDX single-particle analysis further suggests that these long-wavelength absorbers might include iron oxides, as iron is found to be present only when large values of keBC are derived. Using this effective BC refractive index, we find that the contribution of BrC to the total absorption at 470 nm (RBrC,470) ranges from ∼8 %–22 %, with the organic aerosol mass absorption coefficient (MACOA,470) at this wavelength ranging from 0.30±0.27 to 0.68±0.08 m2 g−1. The core–shell model yielded much higher estimates of MACOA,470 and RBrC,470 than homogeneous mixing models, underscoring the importance of model treatment. Absorption attribution using the Bruggeman mixing Mie model suggests a minor BrC contribution of 4 % at 530 nm, while its removal would triple the BrC contribution to the total absorption at 470 nm obtained using the AAE (absorption Ångström exponent) attribution method. Thus, it is recommended that the application of any optical properties-based attribution method use absorption coefficients at the longest possible wavelength to minimize the influence of BrC and to account for potential contributions from other absorbing materials.

MICADO, a near-infrared imager for the Extremely Large Telescope, is being designed to deliver diffraction limited imaging and 50 micro arcsecond (${\mu}$as) astrometric accuracy. MICADO employs an atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) to keep the chromatic elongation of the point spread function (PSF) under control. We must understand the dispersion and residuals after correction to reach the optimum performance. Therefore, we identified several sources of chromatic dispersion that need to be considered for the MICADO ADC. First, we compared common models of atmospheric dispersion to investigate whether these models remain suitable for MICADO. We showed that the differential dispersion between common atmospheric models and integration over the full atmosphere is less than 10 ${\mu}$as for most observations in H-band. We then performed an error propagation analysis to understand the uncertainty in the atmospheric dispersion as a function of atmospheric conditions. In addition, we investigated the impact of photometric color on the astrometric performance. While the differential refraction between stars within the same field of view can be significant, the inclusion of an ADC rendered this effect negligible. For MICADO specifically, we found that the current optomechanical design dominates the residual dispersion budget of 0.4 milli arcseconds (mas), with a contribution of 0.31 mas due to the positioning accuracy of the prisms and up to 0.15 mas due to a mismatch between the dispersive properties of the glass and the atmosphere. An inhomogeneous polymer-like thin film was deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition onto silicon single-crystal substrate whose surface was roughened by anodic oxidation. The inhomogeneous thin film with randomly rough boundaries was created as a result. This sample was studied using the variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry and spectroscopic reflectometry. The structural model including the inhomogeneous thin film, transition layer, and identically rough boundaries was used to process the experimental data. The scalar diffraction theory was used to describe the influence of roughness. The influence of the scattered light registered by the spectrophotometer due to its finite acceptance angle was also taken into account. The thicknesses and optical constants of the inhomogeneous thin film and the transition layer were determined in the optical characterization together with the roughness parameters. The determined rms value of the heights of roughness was found to be in good agreement with values obtained using AFM. The results of the optical characterization of the studied inhomogeneous thin film with rough boundaries were also verified by comparing them with the results of the optical characterization of the inhomogeneous thin film prepared using the same deposition conditions but onto the substrate with a smooth surface. BIFROST will be a short-wavelength ($\lambda$ = 1.0 - 1.7$\mu$m) beam combiner for the VLT Interferometer, combining both high spatial ($\lambda$/2B = 0.8 mas) and spectral (up to R = 25,000) resolution. It will be part of the Asgard Suite of visitor instruments. The new window of high spectral resolution, short wavelength observations brings with it new challenges. Here we outline the instrumental design of BIFROST, highlighting which beam combiner subsystems are required and why. We present temperature-dependent (from room temperature to 80 degrees C) absorption spectra of Au/SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) (core diameter: similar to 25 nm) in water in the range from 1.5 to 4.5 eV, which spans the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and the interband transitions. A decrease in absorption with temperature over the entire spectral range is observed, which is more prominent at the LSPR. These changes are well reproduced by theoretical calculations of the absorption spectra, based on the experimentally measured temperature-dependent real (epsilon(1)) and imaginary (epsilon(2)) parts of the dielectric constant of Au NPs and of the surrounding medium. In addition, we model the photoinduced response of the NPs over the entire spectral range. The experimental and theoretical results of the thermal heating and the simulations of the photoinduced heating are compared with the ultrafast photoinduced transient absorption (TA) spectra upon excitation of the LSPR. These show that while the latter is a reliable monitor of heating of the NP and its environment, the interband region mildly responds to heating but predominantly to the population evolution of charge carriers.

The field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is reviewed. This field leverages mechanics at the nanometer to micrometer scale to improve existing components and introduce novel functionalities in PICs. This review covers the MEMS actuation principles and the mechanical tuning mechanisms for integrated photonics. The state of the art of MEMS tunable components in PICs is quantitatively reviewed and critically assessed with respect to suitability for large-scale integration in existing PIC technology platforms. Carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection of ultrashort optical pulses and low-energy waveform field sampling have recently been demonstrated using direct time-domain methods that exploit optical-field photoemission from plasmonic nanoantennas. These devices make for compact and integratable solid-state detectors operating at optical frequency that work in ambient conditions and require minute pulse energies (picojoule-level). Applications include frequency-comb stabilization, visible to near-infrared time-domain spectroscopy, compact tools for attosecond science and metrology and, due to the high electronic switching speeds, petahertz-scale information processing. However, these devices have been driven by free-space optical waveforms and their implementation within integrated photonic platforms has yet to be demonstrated. In this work, we design and simulate fully-integrated plasmonic bow-tie nanoantennas coupled to a Si$_3$N$_4$-core waveguide for CEP detection. We find that when coupled to realistic on-chip, few-cycle supercontinuum sources, these devices are suitable for direct time-domain CEP detection within integrated photonic platforms. We estimate a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB at 50 kHz resolution bandwidth. We address technical details, such as the tuning of the nanoantennas plasmonic resonance and the waveform's CEP slippage in the waveguide. Moreover, we evaluate power losses due to absorption and scattering and we study the device sensitivity to pulse duration and pulse peak field intensity. Background and purpose: It has been shown that the antidiabetic drug metformin protects hepatocytes against toxicity by various stressors. Chronic or excessive consumption of diclofenac (DF) - a pain-relieving drug, leads to drug-induced liver injury via a mechanism involving mitochondrial damage and ultimately apoptotic death of hepatocytes. However, whether metformin protects against DF-induced toxicity is unknown. Recently, it was also shown that cAMP elevation is protective against DF-induced apoptotic death in hepatocytes, a protective effect primarily involving the downstream cAMP effector EPAC and preservation of mitochondrial function. This study therefore aimed at investigating whether metformin protects against DF-induced toxicity via cAMP-EPACs.Experimental approach: Primary rat hepatocytes were exposed to 400 mu mol/L DF. CE3F4 or ESI-O5 were used as EPAC-1 or 2 inhibitors respectively. Apoptosis was measured by caspase-3 activity and necrosis by Sytox green staining. Seahorse X96 assay was used to determine mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was measured using MitoSox, mitochondrial MnSOD expression was determined by immunostaining and mitochondrial morphology (fusion and fission ratio) by 3D refractive index imaging.Key results: Metformin (1 mmol/L) was protective against DF-induced apoptosis in hepatocytes. This protective effect was EPAC-dependent (mainly EPAC-2). Metformin restored mitochondrial morphology in an EPAC-independent manner. DF-induced mitochondrial dysfunction which was demonstrated by decreased oxygen consumption rate, an increased ROS production and a reduced MnSOD level, were all reversed by metformin in an EPAC-dependent manner.Conclusion and implications: Metformin protects hepatocytes against DF-induced toxicity via cAMP-dependent EPAC-2.

By adding two disks to a standard silicon micro-ring resonator, a very high-quality factor (Q) asymmetric resonance with Q values as high as 7.773 × 105 and slope rates in excess of 880 dB/nm can be achieved. A circuit model has been proposed for this device based on which an analysis has been carried out that can predict the effect of reflections in the coupling components. Depending on the coupling coefficient between the disks and the micro-ring resonator (MRR), it is possible to use this design in three regimes, with different spectral features. Moreover, it is shown that the disks introduce a discontinuity in the transmission spectrum and the relative positioning of the disks in the ring provides a new degree of freedom in the design step. The proposed device features a high extinction ratio (ER) around 1550 nm and could be fabricated in any standard silicon photonics technology without requiring any extra materials or processing steps. The proposed resonator has a high sensitivity of Δλ Res (nm)/Δn > 299 nm/RIU, which makes it suitable for sensing applications and efficient modulators.

Small perturbations in the dielectric environment around a high quality whispering gallery mode resonator usually lead to a frequency shift of the resonator modes directly proportional to the polarizability of the perturbation. Here, we report experimental observations of strong frequency shifts that can be opposite and even exceed the contribution of the perturbations' polarizability. The mode frequencies of a lithium niobate whispering gallery mode resonator are shifted using substrates of refractive indices ranging from 1.50 to 4.22. Both blue- and red-shifts are observed, as well as an increase in mode linewidth, when substrates are moved into the evanescent field of the whispering gallery mode. We compare the experimental results to a theoretical model by Foreman et al. and provide an additional intuitive explanation based on the Goos-H\"anchen shift for the optical domain., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

TiO2 thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at low temperatures (2 parts is known to alter phase transitions and to stabilize crystalline phases. In this work, we have developed low-temperature ALD super-cycles to introduce Al2O3 into TiO2 thin films and photonic crystals. The aluminum oxide content was adjusted by varying the TiO2:Al2O3 internal loop ratio within the ALD super-cycle. Both thin films and inverse opal photonic crystal structures were subjected to thermal treatments ranging from 200 to 1200 °C and were characterized by in- and ex-situ X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and spectroscopic reflectance measurements. The results show that the introduction of alumina affects the crystallization and phase transition temperatures of titania as well as the optical properties of the inverse opal photonic crystals (iPhC). The thermal stability of the titania iPhCs was increased by the alumina introduction, maintaining their photonic bandgap even after heat treatment at 900 °C and outperforming the pure titania, with the best results being achieved with the super-cycles corresponding to an estimated alumina content of 26 wt.%., TiO2 thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at low temperatures (lower than 100 °C) are, in general, amorphous and exhibit a smaller refractive index in comparison to their crystalline counterparts. Nonetheless, low-temperature ALD is needed when the substrates or templates are based on polymeric materials, as the deposition has to be performed below their glass transition or melting temperatures. This is the case for photonic crystals generated via ALD infiltration of self-assembled polystyrene templates. When heated up, crystal phase transformations take place in the thin films or photonic structures, and the accompanying volume reduction as well as the burn-out of residual impurities can lead to mechanical instability. The introduction of cation doping (e.g., Al or Nb) in bulk TiO2 parts is known to alter phase transitions and to stabilize crystalline phases. The working pressure dependency on the vital physical parameters of InGaN thin films obtained with the RFM (Radio Frequency Magnetron) sputter method was investigated in detail here. The electrical conductivity values of our films were bigger than the optical conductivity values, and it was clearly seen that the electrical conductivity parameter was affected by the pressure change. The highest and lowest optical conductivity was obtained at 9 and 8 mTorr pressure respectively. The optical band gap energies of our films have varied non-linearly and this variation in the optical band gap energies have been mainly originated from different Indium compositions in the films. XPS results have proved the film has GaN, InN, In2O3, InNxOy bindings. Structural parameters of the material were found to very close to the theoretical values and are compatible with the theory. In essence, the variation of the significant/useful physical parameters of the thin film with the different applied pressures was deeply studied and discussed. Within the framework of the AeroCom (Aerosol Comparisons between Observations and Models) initiative, the state-of-the-art modelling of aerosol optical properties is assessed from 14 global models participating in the phase III control experiment (AP3). The models are similar to CMIP6/AerChemMIP Earth System Models (ESMs) and provide a robust multi-model ensemble. Inter-model spread of aerosol species lifetimes and emissions appears to be similar to that of mass extinction coefficients (MECs), suggesting that aerosol optical depth (AOD) uncertainties are associated with a broad spectrum of parameterised aerosol processes. Total AOD is approximately the same as in AeroCom phase I (AP1) simulations. However, we find a 50 % decrease in the optical depth (OD) of black carbon (BC), attributable to a combination of decreased emissions and lifetimes. Relative contributions from sea salt (SS) and dust (DU) have shifted from being approximately equal in AP1 to SS contributing about 2∕3 of the natural AOD in AP3. This shift is linked with a decrease in DU mass burden, a lower DU MEC, and a slight decrease in DU lifetime, suggesting coarser DU particle sizes in AP3 compared to AP1. Relative to observations, the AP3 ensemble median and most of the participating models underestimate all aerosol optical properties investigated, that is, total AOD as well as fine and coarse AOD (AODf, AODc), Ångström exponent (AE), dry surface scattering (SCdry), and absorption (ACdry) coefficients. Compared to AERONET, the models underestimate total AOD by ca. 21 % ± 20 % (as inferred from the ensemble median and interquartile range). Against satellite data, the ensemble AOD biases range from −37 % (MODIS-Terra) to −16 % (MERGED-FMI, a multi-satellite AOD product), which we explain by differences between individual satellites and AERONET measurements themselves. Correlation coefficients (R) between model and observation AOD records are generally high (R>0.75), suggesting that the models are capable of capturing spatio-temporal variations in AOD. We find a much larger underestimate in coarse AODc (∼ −45 % ± 25 %) than in fine AODf (∼ −15 % ± 25 %) with slightly increased inter-model spread compared to total AOD. These results indicate problems in the modelling of DU and SS. The AODc bias is likely due to missing DU over continental land masses (particularly over the United States, SE Asia, and S. America), while marine AERONET sites and the AATSR SU satellite data suggest more moderate oceanic biases in AODc. Column AEs are underestimated by about 10 % ± 16 %. For situations in which measurements show AE > 2, models underestimate AERONET AE by ca. 35 %. In contrast, all models (but one) exhibit large overestimates in AE when coarse aerosol dominates (bias ca. +140 % if observed AE < 0.5). Simulated AE does not span the observed AE variability. These results indicate that models overestimate particle size (or underestimate the fine-mode fraction) for fine-dominated aerosol and underestimate size (or overestimate the fine-mode fraction) for coarse-dominated aerosol. This must have implications for lifetime, water uptake, scattering enhancement, and the aerosol radiative effect, which we can not quantify at this moment. Comparison against Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) in situ data results in mean bias and inter-model variations of −35 % ± 25 % and −20 % ± 18 % for SCdry and ACdry, respectively. The larger underestimate of SCdry than ACdry suggests the models will simulate an aerosol single scattering albedo that is too low. The larger underestimate of SCdry than ambient air AOD is consistent with recent findings that models overestimate scattering enhancement due to hygroscopic growth. The broadly consistent negative bias in AOD and surface scattering suggests an underestimate of aerosol radiative effects in current global aerosol models. Considerable inter-model diversity in the simulated optical properties is often found in regions that are, unfortunately, not or only sparsely covered by ground-based observations. This includes, for instance, the Sahara, Amazonia, central Australia, and the South Pacific. This highlights the need for a better site coverage in the observations, which would enable us to better assess the models, but also the performance of satellite products in these regions. Using fine-mode AOD as a proxy for present-day aerosol forcing estimates, our results suggest that models underestimate aerosol forcing by ca. −15 %, however, with a considerably large interquartile range, suggesting a spread between −35 % and +10 %.

Semiconductor-based mode-locked lasers, integrated sources enabling the generation of coherent ultra-short optical pulses, are important for a wide range of applications, including datacom, optical ranging and spectroscopy. As their performance remains largely unpredictable due to the lack of commercial design tools and the poorly understood mode-locking dynamics, significant research has focused on their modeling. In recent years, traveling-wave models have been favored because they can efficiently incorporate the rich semiconductor physics of the laser. However, thus far such models struggle to include nonlinear and dispersive effects of an extended passive laser cavity, which can play an important role for the temporal and spectral pulse evolution and stability. To overcome these challenges, we developed a hybrid modeling strategy by unifying the traveling-wave modeling technique for the semiconductor laser sections with a split-step Fourier method for the extended passive laser cavity. This paper presents the hybrid modeling concept and exemplifies for the first time the significance of the third order nonlinearity and dispersion of the extended cavity for a 2.6 GHz III–V-on-Silicon mode-locked laser. This modeling approach allows to include a wide range of physical phenomena with low computational complexity, enabling the exploration of novel operating regimes such as chip-scale soliton mode-locking.

International audience; Over the past several years, non-ablative femtosecond laser exposure with spatially overlapping (i.e. spatially cumulative) pulses has emerged as a key process in three-dimensional writing of patterns in bulk of dielectric substrates. When temporally non-cumulative and combined with post-processing steps, this process defines a novel manufacturing technique in fused silica, finding use in a broad number of applications, including-but not limited to-micromechanics, integrated optics, microelectronics, microfluidics, information storage, and combinations of these fields for novel integrated sensing applications. For fused silica, evidence has shown that there is a pulse-length duration threshold around 200 fs, marking the boundary between two radically different characteristic material modification regimes, each leading to a specific application. Pulse-widths below 200 fs lead to localized densification, enabling the direct-write of optical waveguides, while pulse-widths above this value produce self-organized nanostructures causing a localized volume expansion and enhanced etching susceptibility to various chemicals. Here, we focus our attention on the regime below 200 fs, using low repetition rate, temporally non-cumulative pulses. In particular, we use very short pulses, i.e. in the range of 30 fs-a regime as yet unexplored from the viewpoint of spatially cumulative modifications. Our goal is to understand how structural modifications obtained by overlapping pulses evolve with varying pulse overlap, and how shorter pulse duration may correlate with higher material densification. This knowledge is particularly important for the next generation of photonics devices, where increasing the level of laser-induced densification is a key factor for high-density photonic integration.

No general approach is available yet to measure directly the ratio between chromatic dispersion and the nonlinear coefficient, and hence the soliton number for a given optical pulse, in an arbitrary guiding medium. Here we solve this problem using continuum generation. We experimentally demonstrate our method in polarization-maintaining and single-mode fibers with positive and negative chromatic dispersion. Our technique also offers new opportunities to determine the chromatic dispersion of guiding media over a broad spectral range while pumping at a fixed wavelength. Based on a developed theory, we show that introducing a meta-grid of sub-wavelength-sized plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) into existing semiconductor light-emitting-devices (LEDs) can lead to enhanced transmission of light across the LED-chip/encapsulant interface. This results from destructive interference between light reflected from the chip/encapsulant interface and light reflected by the NP meta-grid, which conspicuously increase the efficiency of light extraction from LEDs. The “meta-grid”, should be inserted on top of a conventional LED chip within its usual encapsulating packaging. As described by the theory, the nanoparticle composition, size, interparticle spacing, and distance from the LED-chip surface can be tailored to facilitate maximal transmission of light emitted from the chip into its encapsulating layer by reducing the Fresnel loss. The analysis shows that transmission across a typical LED-chip/encapsulant interface at the peak emission wavelength can be boosted up to ~99%, which is otherwise mere ~84% at normal incidence. The scheme could provide improved transmission within the photon escape cone over the entire emission spectrum of an LED. This would benefit energy saving, in addition to increasing the lifetime of LEDs by reducing heating. Potentially, the scheme will be easy to implement and adopt into existing semiconductor-device technologies, and it can be used separately or in conjunction with other methods for mitigating the critical angle loss in LEDs., Tailored meta-grid of nanoparticles could boost performance of light-emitting diodes Introducing a tailored layer of plasmonic nanoparticles into the epoxy casing of an LED can improve the device’s light output, which would benefit energy savings and boost LED lifetime. D.S. from IIT Guwahati along with J.P. and A.A.K. from Imperial College London revealed the benefits of adding a two-dimensional array of silver nanoparticles called a “meta-grid” to the lens-shaped epoxy packaging. Their theory, tested by computer simulations, specifies optimal conditions for the nanoparticles’ size, composition, spacing, and location, for which such meta-grids significantly reduce the Fresnel reflection loss at the LED-chip/epoxy interface, thus improving light extraction from LED. The approach is customizable to suit a specific emission color or the entire emission spectrum of a typical broadband LED. Authors proposed a few schemes to implement it into the existing LED manufacturing technology.

Optical sensors based on guided mode resonance (GMR) realized in polymers are promising candidates for sensitive and cost effective strain sensors. The benefit of GMR grating sensors is the non-contact, easy optical read-out with large working distance, avoiding costly alignment and packaging procedures. The GMR gratings with resonance around 850&ndash, 900 nm are fabricated using electron beam lithography and replicated using a soft stamp based imprinting technique on 175 &mu, m-thick foils to make them suitable for optical strain sensing. For the strain measurements, foils are realized with both GMR gratings and waveguides with Bragg gratings. The latter are used as reference sensors and allow extracting the absolute strain sensitivity of the GMR sensor foils. Following this method, it is shown that GMR gratings have an absolute strain sensitivity of 1.02 &plusmn, 0.05 p m / &mu, ϵ at 870 nm.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive depth resolved optical imaging modality, that enables high resolution, cross-sectional imaging in biological tissues and materials at clinically relevant depths. Though OCT offers high resolution imaging, the best ultra-high-resolution OCT systems are limited to imaging structural changes with a resolution of one micron on a single B-scan within very limited depth. Nanosensitive OCT (nsOCT) is a recently developed technique that is capable of providing enhanced sensitivity of OCT to structural changes. Improving the sensitivity of OCT to detect structural changes at the nanoscale level, to a depth typical for conventional OCT, could potentially improve the diagnostic capability of OCT in medical applications. Optical diffraction tomography is an effective tool to estimate the refractive indices of unknown objects. It proceeds by solving an ill-posed inverse problem for which the wave equation governs the scattering events. The solution has traditionally been derived by the minimization of an objective function in which the data-fidelity term encourages measurement consistency while the regularization term enforces prior constraints. In this work, we propose to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) as the projector in a projected-gradient-descent method. We iteratively produce high-quality estimates and ensure measurement consistency, thus keeping the best of CNN-based and regularization-based worlds. Our experiments on two-dimensional-simulated and real data show an improvement over other conventional or deep-learning-based methods. Furthermore, our trained CNN projector is general enough to accommodate various forward models for the handling of multiple-scattering events. A set of photochromic dithienylethenes bearing amino and nitro groups are synthesised and embedded at high concentrations in a polymer matrix (Cellulose Acetate Butyrate, CAB) to produce films showing a large reversible modulation of the complex refractive index in the Vis-NIR spectral range, thanks to an interesting combination of remarkable response at the molecular level and very high load capability in the chosen matrix. The photochromic derivatives are characterized in solution and in CAB films by means of electronic and vibrational spectroscopy, complemented by DFT calculations. Both the real and imaginary part of the refractive index are determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The modulation of the refractive index in the near infrared is in the range 0.02–0.04. These are very large values for such kinds of systems and they are due to a favourable combination of very large solubility of the derivatives in CAB and a high polarisability change. As for the change in transparency in the visible, contrast values larger than 103 are easily achieved. Based on such films, holograms are written and reconstructed with a very high fidelity and efficiency.

An investigation of the copolymerization of cyclohexene sulfide and carbon disulfide using salphen and salen Cr complexes as catalysts and [PPN]+X- salts as cocatalysts, at different temperatures and reaction times, is reported. Both catalytic systems produce both polymer and cyclic products. For the first time, poly(trithiocyclohexylcarbonates) (PCS) have been synthetized in high yields and high molecular weights. Salphen-based catalysts, in comparison with salen-based ones, show higher productivity and selectivity for polymers with high molecular weight up to 18 kg/mol when the reaction is carried out at 25 °C. At a higher temperature with (salphen)CrCl, the maximum value of selectivity for copolymers (72%) was obtained at a short reaction time (3 h). At long reaction times, great amounts of cyclic by-product are observed, thus evidencing the tendency for cyclohexene sulfide and CS2 to provide cyclic products due to the stability of the trithiocyclohexylcarbonate. PCS possesses high refractive index (n > 1.72), and antimicrobial assays reveal that these materials are active against Escherichia coli and moderately active against Staphylococcus aureus. These properties along with the Tg values of 80 °C make these polymers suitable for interesting applications different from those of poly(trithiopropylencarbonate).
