Urban reforestation mitigates climate change by sequestering carbon, but quantifying carbon gains requires accurate aboveground biomass estimation. This study estimated carbon sequestration in a reforested urban landscape using PlanetScope, Sentinel-1A, Sentinel-2A, SRTM data, and field measurements. Non-parametric machine learning algorithms (k-nearest neighbor, support vector machines, extreme gradient boosting, random forests) with 39 predictor features generated aboveground biomass density maps. The extreme gradient boosting model performed best, predicting 4.1–286.5t ha-1 aboveground biomass, demonstrating its effectiveness for modeling reforested biomass with multi-source data. Findings highlight extreme gradient boosting’s promise for urban biomass estimation, the importance of multi-source data, and machine learning’s potential in addressing environmental challenges like climate change. The achievement of international forest restoration goals requires economically viable land‐use options. The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is a priority area for ecosystem restoration, as it is widely deforested to make place for intensive agriculture and one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the world. We systematically reviewed existing scientific literature on the biome to highlight the evidence on economic benefits and costs of forest restoration. A total of 15 publications were identified that quantify costs and/or economic benefits of forest restoration. We observed that most studies (12) were published after 2018 and that research on the topic was biogeographically biased as 12 publications referred to study sites in Brazil's Southeast Region. Given its beneficial natural conditions, the Atlantic Forest is predestined for a wide range of restoration‐related opportunities, yet economic benefits of restoration are underexplored (seven studies). Moreover, benefits from a multifunctional use of restored forests are almost absent in the literature with only three studies presenting primary data. Elaboration of restoration costs is also limited to 10 studies that focus predominantly on active restoration. Thus, we argue that the economic costs and benefits of forest restoration are not well understood. Clarity thereon is, however, critical for policy formulation and to mobilize private investments. In this study, a real plot of abandoned agricultural land overgrown with forest in Russia has been surveyed. The amount of future CO2 sequestration by this forest for the next 20 years has been calculated by means of a mathematical model. The unprofitability of the 20-years climatic reforestation project on this land has been proved, based on the current price of carbon units in Russia and China, because Russia cannot enter the European carbon units' market. To improve profitability, it was proposed to combine the reforestation with timber harvesting, charcoal, natural fertilisers and forage production. Thus, the wood cut for maintenance is used partially for sale, partially for production of charcoal and partially left as a fertiliser on the cleared stripes, where meadow plants will be replaced with alfalfa, using technologies of zero soil treatment. The economic feasibility study has been performed based on the real capital and current expenses of the combined reforestation project. The positive Net Present Value and a very high Internal Rate of Return of the joint project, calculated by the methods of financial mathematics have indicated its economic viability and attractiveness for investors. There is persistent uncertainty about how integrated plant functions, like growth, are mechanistically constrained and practically predicted by functional traits. For trees, these knowledge gaps persist for two reasons: First, studies of 'natural' forests are observational, with highly variable and confounding resource limitation and competition; second, most studies investigate only a few popular traits and ignore context‐dependencies in trait effects on growth (e.g. trait–environment or trait–ontogeny interactions).We assessed 17 traits as predictors of radial growth and aboveground carbon sequestration for 182 trees, including individuals of 42 species common to temperate cities. By focusing exclusively on planted trees growing in isolation, our unique study is a pseudo‐experiment that spans a large range of taxonomic and trait variability, and minimizes confounding effects of environmental heterogeneity (e.g. shifts in light availability with tree size). Focal traits included not only commonly measured traits related to leaf economics and plant size, but also wood traits and whole‐plant phenology.Models with indices of tree ontogeny (size) and traits explained 80% and 72% of variability in relative growth and carbon sequestration, respectively, and traits accounted for ~20% of the variation. Traits related to said tree functions included leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf N content, mature height, wood anatomy and phenology. LDMC was positively correlated with wood growth and C sequestration across all size classes, while the positive effects of leaf N, mature height and wood density were only apparent for smaller trees. Ring‐porous species had higher rates of growth and C sequestration than diffuse‐porous species.Consistent with recent theory, growth rates of isolated, urban trees vary as function of simple and interactive effects of traits and size. Our findings are useful for optimizing reforestation efforts in temperate cities, where planners and land managers can select species for rapid growth and C sequestration using freely available data for the 'effect' traits we identified, including wood anatomy and density, leaf N, and LDMC. Lastly, the trait–growth relationships we describe here may reflect those of 'naturally' isolated trees growing in savannas and/or woodlands and provide an insightful frame of reference for trees in closed‐canopy forests. In semi-arid regions, is necessary to explore strategies to mitigate abiotic stresses such as water deficit and salinity. This study aimed to evaluate the stress tolerance capacity of three species subjected to different water regimes and salinity levels, based on dry matter production and water use efficiency (WUE). The species Handroanthus impetiginosus, Vachellia farnesiana, and Amburana cearensis were evaluated in combination with different water regimes (50%, 75%, and 100% of reference evapotranspiration – ET0) and salinity levels (0.18, 1.50, and 1.90 dS m−1). The results show that biomass accumulation increased at 50% and 75% ET0, while the WUE decreased at 100% ET0. The salinity level (1.90 dS m−1) caused reductions in leaf dry biomass (LDB), total dry biomass (TDB), LDB/TDB ratio, and WUE. The negative effects of high salinity on plant height were greater with the application of 75% ET0. The highest WUE was obtained at 50% ET0 for A. cearensis and H. impetiginosus, while V. farnesiana obtained the highest WUE at 75% ET0. A. cearensis exhibited the highest biomass accumulation (2.58 g) and WUE (0.21 g L−1). Overall, the species can tolerate drought and salinity conditions, being sensitive to high salinity concentrations during their initial growth. The Caatinga is characterized by low water availability and soil salinization. Therefore, assessing the ability of native species to cope with these conditions allows for their utilization in reforestation programs in drought and salinity-exposed environments. Studies on the combined effects of these factors are scarce. The results indicated that native species show tolerance to drought and salinity conditions, albeit with some reductions in biomass production and water use efficiency at high NaCl concentrations. Afforestation has emerged as a major tool in climate mitigation, but plantations of non-native species can negatively affect biodiversity and ecosystem services. Planting indigenous trees in areas that were formerly forested requires an understanding of landscape history over centennial–millennial timescales derived from palaeoecology. Ancient open and mosaic ecosystems are particularly threatened by the global drive for tree planting, which is based on an assumption of degradation. Assumptions that open or mosaic landscapes are remnants of degraded forests is a type of attribution error that can be corrected through an understanding of landscape history. Cultural landscape mosaics can also have benefits in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem services when compared with closed-canopy forests. We propose that testing a null hypothesis regarding former forest cover will assist in correct landscape attribution, guiding reforestation and restoration that reflects landscape history and local context. Mitigating climate change while safeguarding biodiversity and livelihoods is a major challenge. However, rampant afforestation threatens biodiversity and livelihoods, with questionable benefits to carbon storage. The narrative of landscape degradation is often applied without considering the history of the landscape. While some landscapes are undoubtedly deforested, others existed in open or mosaic states before human intervention, or have been deliberately maintained as such. In psychology, a 'fundamental attribution error' is made when characteristics are attributed without consideration of context or circumstances. We apply this concept to landscapes, and then propose a process that avoids attribution errors by testing a null hypothesis regarding past forest extent, using palaeoecology and other long-term data, alongside ecological and stakeholder knowledge. As global tree‐growing efforts have escalated in the past decade, copious failures and unintended consequences have prompted many reforestation best practices guidelines. The extent to which organizations have integrated these ecological and socioeconomic recommendations, however, remains uncertain. We reviewed websites of 99 intermediary organizations that promote and fund tree‐growing projects to determine how well they report following best practices. Nearly half the organizations stated tree or area planting targets, but only 25% had measurable, time‐bound objectives. Most organizations discussed the benefits local communities would receive from trees, but only 38% reported measures of these outcomes. Nonprofit organizations with greater prior experience converged more closely on best practices, and their level of scientific expertise was positively associated with clearer project selection standards. Although many tree‐growing organizations acknowledge the importance of clear goals, local community involvement, and monitoring, our results raise questions regarding whether long‐term benefits are being achieved and emphasize the need for stronger public accountability standards. The recent development of the Red Colobus Conservation Action Plan has spurred momentum to promote site‐based conservation of red colobus while forging partnerships among researchers and building local capacity. Communities for Red Colobus (C4RC) is a community‐centered conservation organization in The Gambia, West Africa, that aims to protect Temminck's red colobus (Piliocolobus badius temminckii) while advancing opportunities for local people. We highlight the inception and initial development of C4RC with its educational and ranger teams and describe how local and international collaborations have positively impacted the organization through training and mentoring programs. This conservation program has the potential to become sustainable with plans for continued ecological monitoring, reforestation efforts, use of alternative methods of cooking, and the expansion of ecotourism. We hope that the dissemination of project information through Gambian broadcast and social media channels and wider community outreach activities will improve perceptions and conservation of primates and inspire the development of other red colobus initiatives at suitable forest sites based on the C4RC model of community‐based conservation. The northeast of Madagascar is as diverse as it is threatened. The area bordering the Analanjirofo and SAVA regions contains six protected areas and at least 22 lemur species. Many applied research and conservation programs have been established in the region with the aim of ensuring both wildlife and people thrive in the long term. While most of the remaining humid evergreen forest of northeast Madagascar is formally protected, the local human population depends heavily on the land, and unsustainable natural resource use threatens this biodiversity hotspot. Drawing from our collective experiences managing conservation activities and research programs in northeast Madagascar, we discuss the major threats to the region and advocate for eight conservation activities that help reduce threats and protect the environment, providing specific examples from our own programs. These include (1) empowering local conservation actors, (2) ensuring effectively protected habitat, (3) expanding reforestation, (4) establishing and continuing long‐term research and monitoring, (5) reducing food insecurity, (6) supporting environmental education, (7) promoting sustainable livelihoods, and (8) expanding community health initiatives. Lastly, we provide a list of actions that individuals can take to join us in supporting and promoting lemur conservation. Research Highlights: With at least 22 lemur species, six protected areas, and a growing, yet food insecure, human population, northeast Madagascar has its own set of conservation challenges.We propose and discuss eight conservation activities to help alleviate major threats in the region, providing examples from our own programs.Drawing on diverse training and backgrounds, our combined programs and activities are working to improve the coexistence and health of the environment, biodiversity, and people in northeast Madagascar. Increasing frequencies of heat waves and drought are expected to shift the range and growth of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), a widely distributed cold-adapted boreal species. However, our ability to predict this species response to these climate anomalies remains limited, especially when considering how trees can exhibit delayed and persistant growth responses to these stressors, or legacy effects. Here, we assess the growth response of balsam fir seedlings from four populations following 60 treatment combinations of temperature and water deficit in the previous year. Although we observed moderate water deficit legacy effects on growth, there were no resilience or recovery responses. We did, however, observe considerable negative legacy effects on growth proportional to the level of warming, with average legacy growth declines reaching 45% under the highest warming treatment. Furthermore, the southern populations displayed a 28% higher average growth resilience to temperature stress compared with the northern populations, indicating a higher tolerance to warming. When comparing legacy effects on balsam fir populations at moderate warming conditions relative to the current local baseline climate, we report limited growth declines for southern populations and growth increases for the northern populations. While our results highlight the importance of legacy effects from heat stress in seedlings, they also provide evidence that careful selection of warm-adapted genotypes for reforestation efforts may help offset some of these legacy effects. Forests restored passively or by tree planting can take many decades to be recolonized by native forest understory plant species, if at all. Our study tested (1) the ability of forest topsoil transfer to accelerate the recovery of native forest plant communities in post‐agricultural reforestation sites after tree‐planting and without previous topsoil removal and (2) the effect of adding combinations of woody debris (WD), shrub plantings, and shade shelters (SS) on top of the transferred topsoil. Five 12.5 × 10 m treatment blocks were established in each of three recipient sites, which included two post‐agricultural reforestation sites, and one abandoned gravel pit site. Each treatment blocks received forest topsoil and a combination of additional treatments. Treatment and control plots were sampled for all vascular species in spring and summer. Native forest plant species richness in topsoil recipient plots was similar (p > 0.05) to that of mature donor forest sites, and significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of passive control plots in the recipient sites. The plant community composition of all topsoil recipient plots had also become more like the donor forests and less like recipient site controls. Only the unplanted gravel pit‐site increased in non‐native ruderal plant species after topsoil transfer. The addition of WD, shrub plantings, or SS had no significant effect after two growing seasons. We recommend that topsoil should when possible be added where trees have already been planted, allowing for shorter time to canopy closure and thereby higher survival of shade‐adapted understory species. Societal Impact Statement: Lavaka, large gullies in Madagascar, can cause problems for farmers and for infrastructure, but these features also have beneficial aspects that have generally been overlooked. They provide plant refugia, and commonly host species that would otherwise not thrive on the grassy uplands. Farmers sometimes make use of lavaka to plant crops that require more protection or soil moisture. Colonial narratives blame lavaka erosion on poor land management but ignore their pre‐human‐settlement existence on the landscape and the ecological functions they serve. The knowledge and wisdom of Malagasy farmers are key to better understanding the complex roles that lavaka plays in the landscape. Summary: This paper combines a review of lavaka—erosional gullies in Madagascar's grass‐covered highlands—with new observations of their importance as ecological patch environments for a wide range of plants not seen elsewhere within the grassy biome. Lavaka play a role as a natural refugia for flora that would otherwise not thrive on the exposed and infertile hillslopes, and local farmers exploit their topography and sediment deposits to grow a variety of crops. We provide a classification scheme for lavaka based on the extent to which they have been colonised by vegetation. Our analysis is based on observations made over many field seasons in the highlands as well as interviews with Malagasy farmers living with lavaka on their land. We emphasise the importance of local knowledge and environmental wisdom in the analysis of landscape evolution, and we conclude that lavaka, while certainly an erosional problem in many places, can nonetheless provide valuable ecosystem services and agricultural opportunities that should not be overlooked. Limiting global warming to 2 °C requires urgent action on land-based mitigation. This study evaluates the biogeochemical and biogeophysical implications of two alternative land-based mitigation scenarios that aim to achieve the same radiative forcing. One scenario is primarily driven by bioenergy expansion (SSP226Lu-BIOCROP), while the other involves re/afforestation (SSP126Lu-REFOREST). We find that overall, SSP126Lu-REFOREST is a more efficient strategy for removing CO2 from the atmosphere by 2100, resulting in a net carbon sink of 242 ~ 483 PgC with smaller uncertainties compared to SSP226Lu-BIOCROP, which exhibits a wider range of -78 ~ 621 PgC. However, SSP126Lu-REFOREST leads to a relatively warmer planetary climate than SSP226Lu-BIOCROP, and this relative warming can be intensified in certain re/afforested regions where local climates are not favorable for tree growth. Despite the cooling effect on a global scale, SSP226Lu-BIOCROP reshuffles regional warming hotspots, amplifying summer temperatures in vulnerable tropical regions such as Central Africa and Southeast Asia. Our findings highlight the need for strategic land use planning to identify suitable regions for re/afforestation and bioenergy expansion, thereby improving the likelihood of achieving the intended climate mitigation outcomes. Background: In most regions and ecosystems, soils are the largest terrestrial carbon pool. Their potential vulnerability to climate and land use change, management, and other drivers, along with soils' ability to mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration, makes them important to carbon balance and management. To date, most studies of soil carbon management have been based at either large or site-specific scales, resulting in either broad generalizations or narrow conclusions, respectively. Advancing the science and practice of soil carbon management requires scientific progress at intermediate scales. Here, we conducted the fifth in a series of ecoregional assessments of the effects of land use change and forest management on soil carbon stocks, this time addressing the Northeast U.S. We used synthesis approaches including (1) meta-analysis of published literature, (2) soil survey and (3) national forest inventory databases to examine overall effects and underlying drivers of deforestation, reforestation, and forest harvesting on soil carbon stocks. The three complementary data sources allowed us to quantify direction, magnitude, and uncertainty in trends. Results: Our meta-analysis findings revealed regionally consistent declines in soil carbon stocks due to deforestation, whether for agriculture or urban development. Conversely, reforestation led to significant increases in soil C stocks, with variation based on specific geographic factors. Forest harvesting showed no significant effect on soil carbon stocks, regardless of place-based or practice-specific factors. Observational soil survey and national forest inventory data generally supported meta-analytic harvest trends, and provided broader context by revealing the factors that act as baseline controls on soil carbon stocks in this ecoregion of carbon-dense soils. These factors include a range of soil physical, parent material, and topographic controls, with land use and climate factors also playing a role. Conclusions: Forest harvesting has limited potential to alter forest soil C stocks in either direction, in contrast to the significant changes driven by land use shifts. These findings underscore the importance of understanding soil C changes at intermediate scales, and the need for an all-lands approach to managing soil carbon for climate change mitigation in the Northeast U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scientific innovation is overturning conventional paradigms of forest, water, and energy cycle interactions. This has implications for our understanding of the principal causal pathways by which tree, forest, and vegetation cover (TFVC) influence local and global warming/cooling. Many identify surface albedo and carbon sequestration as the principal causal pathways by which TFVC affects global warming/cooling. Moving toward the outer latitudes, in particular, where snow cover is more important, surface albedo effects are perceived to overpower carbon sequestration. By raising surface albedo, deforestation is thus predicted to lead to surface cooling, while increasing forest cover is assumed to result in warming. Observational data, however, generally support the opposite conclusion, suggesting surface albedo is poorly understood. Most accept that surface temperatures are influenced by the interplay of surface albedo, incoming shortwave (SW) radiation, and the partitioning of the remaining, post‐albedo, SW radiation into latent and sensible heat. However, the extent to which the avoidance of sensible heat formation is first and foremost mediated by the presence (absence) of water and TFVC is not well understood. TFVC both mediates the availability of water on the land surface and drives the potential for latent heat production (evapotranspiration, ET). While latent heat is more directly linked to local than global cooling/warming, it is driven by photosynthesis and carbon sequestration and powers additional cloud formation and top‐of‐cloud reflectivity, both of which drive global cooling. TFVC loss reduces water storage, precipitation recycling, and downwind rainfall potential, thus driving the reduction of both ET (latent heat) and cloud formation. By reducing latent heat, cloud formation, and precipitation, deforestation thus powers warming (sensible heat formation), which further diminishes TFVC growth (carbon sequestration). Large‐scale tree and forest restoration could, therefore, contribute significantly to both global and surface temperature cooling through the principal causal pathways of carbon sequestration and cloud formation. We need empirical evidence on the impacts of land‐use change on hydrological processes to guide policies and land management decisions. Based on a global meta‐analysis of 287 primary studies covering 1049 data points in 58 countries and across 12 biomes, we review hydrologic process changes resulting from native forest disturbances and conversions to other land‐use types. Infiltration rates consistently fell over 50%, overland flow increased and evapotranspiration as a share of rainfall declined when native forests were disturbed or converted. Changes in total evapotranspiration, interception, and streamflow were less consistent in direction, while restored native forests returned infiltration function rates to pre‐conversion levels. Forests, and perhaps especially native forests, have a unique value in supporting and regulating hydrologic processes, as they can reduce erosion, improve water infiltration, and potentially enhance water supply, including in downwind locations. We thus underscore global calls for increasing the proportion of reforested areas with native species in landscape restoration planned for this decade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A rapid decline of Abies koreana has been reported in most of the natural alpine habitats in Korea. It is generally accepted that this phenomenon is due to climate change even though no clear conclusions have been drawn. Most research has focused on abiotic environmental factors, but studies on the relationships between A. koreana and soil fungal microbiomes are scarce. In this study, the rhizoplane and rhizosphere fungal communities in the alive and dead Korean fir trees from its three major natural habitats including Mt. Deogyu, Mt. Halla, and Mt. Jiri in Korea were investigated to identify specific soil fungal groups closely associated with A. koreana. Soil fungal diversity in each study site was significantly different from another based on the beta diversity calculations. Heat tree analysis at the genus level showed that Clavulina, Beauveria, and Tomentella were most abundant in the healthy trees probably by forming ectomycorrhizae with Korean fir growth and controlling pests and diseases. However, Calocera, Dacrymyces, Gyoerffyella, Hydnotrya, Microdochium, Hyaloscypha, Mycosymbioces, and Podospora were abundant in the dead trees. Our findings suggested that Clavulina, Beauveria, and Tomentella are the major players that could be considered in future reforestation programs to establish ectomycorrhizal networks and promote growth. These genera may have played a significant role in the survival and growth of A. koreana in its natural habitats. In particular, the genus Gyoerffyella may account for the death of the seedlings. Precise vegetation restoration is critical in drylands, as some inappropriate restoration attempts have even increased water scarcity and degradation in afforestation areas. Potential natural vegetation (PNV) is widely used to provide a reference for the appropriate location and vegetation type of restoration programs while the appropriate restored areas remain unknown. Therefore, we proposed a PNV–potential normalized difference vegetation index (PNDVI) coupling framework based on multiple machine learning (ML) algorithms for precise dryland vegetation restoration. Taking the lower Tarim River Basin (LTRB) with a total area of 1,182 km2 as a case study, its present suitable restoration locations, area, and appropriate planting species were quantitatively estimated. The results showed that the model developed by incorporating PNDVI into PNV with easily measurable and available data such as temperature and soil properties can accurately identify dryland restoration patterns. In LTRB, the potentially suitable habitats of trees and grass are closer to the riverbank, while shrubby habitats are further away from the course, covering 1.88, 2.96, and 25.12 km2, respectively. There is still enormous land potential for further expansion of the current trees and grass in the LTRB, with 2.56 and 1.54% of existing land supposed to be trees and grass, respectively. This study's novel aspect is combining PNV and PNDVI to quantify and estimate precise restoration patterns through multiple ML algorithms. The model developed here can be used to evaluate the suitable reforestation locations, area, and vegetation types in drylands and to provide a basis for precise vegetation restoration. Background and aims: Water is fundamental to the growth of plants by participating in plant metabolism, and nutrient transport and maintaining the integrity of the hydraulic system. Knowledge of water use characteristics among co-occurring plant species is crucial for understanding the ecohydrological processes and community assemblages. However, interspecific interactions with respect to water sources and physiological activity remain poorly understood. Methods: The stable oxygen isotope values of xylem and soil water, and leaf physiological characteristics were measured in three communities in the Mu Us Desert, northwest China: a mixed shrub and grasses community; a pure shrub community; and a pure grasses community. Results: In mixed communities, the main water source for shrubs shifted to deeper soil layers than in pure communities, whereas grass water use switched to shallower soil layers. Leaf photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and water potential of both species were significantly lower in mixed communities than in pure communities. These results suggest that interspecific interactions influenced plant water use patterns. The water-use efficiency of shrubs increased in mixed communities, whereas that of grasses decreased, indicating that grasses exacerbated water stress on shrubs, while shrubs relieved water stress on grasses. Additionally, leaf physiological activity was positively correlated with shallower water sources and negatively correlated with deeper water sources. Conclusion: Our findings show that plants responded to interspecific interactions under drought conditions through the coupling of plant water sources with leaf physiologies. Coating seeds in taste-averting chemical defenses (e.g., capsaicin from Capsicum spp.) can reduce rodent seed predation, and thus might promote plant establishment and forest regeneration. However, the efficacy of such seed coatings remains unknown for many woody plant species, and seed coatings have not been evaluated across different habitats where forest managers might seek to promote forest regeneration. We used two complementary seed-removal experiments in closed-canopy forests (Michigan) and an old field undergoing reforestation (New York) to examine whether coating seeds of four native tree species (Acer rubrum, Fagus grandifolia, Pinus banksiana, and Pinus resinosa) with chili powder reduces seed removal by rodents. In all species and habitats, control seeds were removed more than seeds treated with capsaicin (94% more in the closed-canopy forest, 17% more in the old field). This article addresses the main threats to biodiversity in Ecuador and evaluates current conservation initiatives. Using a qualitative literature review approach, secondary data were analyzed and interviews were conducted with conservation and biodiversity experts. Results indicate that deforestation, driven by agricultural expansion, mining and oil extraction, as well as water and soil pollution, are the most significant threats to Ecuador's biodiversity. Conservation initiatives, such as reforestation programs, silvopastoral systems and the implementation of the NDCs and SDGs, have shown promising results, but face challenges in terms of implementation and community participation. The discussion focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of these strategies, highlighting the need for a more integrated and participatory approach. Improvements are suggested to increase the effectiveness of conservation initiatives. In conclusion, biodiversity protection in Ecuador requires a holistic and collaborative approach, addressing both direct and underlying threats, and is crucial to preserve the country's rich biodiversity for future generations. One of the key problems that arise in the reproduction of forests in the paradigm of sustainable development of the forest industry is the volume of reforestation, which requires its correlation. This problem requires attention, since effective afforestation and reforestation determine the stability of the ecosystem and the importance of forest resources for the conservation of biodiversity in the forest sector. The purpose of the study is to investigate the features of artificial forest reproduction in the conditions of the forest-steppe climatic and geographical zone. The methodological basis for organising observations included field survey of planting material plots, monitoring the state of crops on the area, conducting analytical substantiation of progressive experience, and evaluating the final results obtained. The study was conducted in the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi forest enterprise branch of the state enterprise "Forests of Ukraine". The dynamics of annual volumes of artificial forest reproduction, considering the predominant tree species during 2012-2021, is presented. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of transplanting of main and related species in the presented forest conditions were analysed. During this period, there is a fluctuation in the volume of artificial forest reproduction in the forest districts under study. With regard to the transplanting of main and related species, it is worth noting its advantages in ensuring biodiversity and rapid forest regeneration. However, there are disadvantages, such as the possibility of losing genetic diversity and considering local conditions for effective seating. As a result, the study helped to determine the trends and features of forest reproduction in these forest districts, and to note the advantages and disadvantages of transplanting of the main and related breeds in various forest-growing conditions. The enterprise is actively implementing measures for forest reproduction, focusing on intensive planting of forest crops. This is achieved by placing plantations in areas that have been subjected to continuous sanitary and reforestation logging. One of the key tasks of the enterprise is to ensure high productivity of forest crops in the region. For this purpose, significant amounts of reforestation work are carried out, including systematic soil preparation and careful selection of optimal species for specific conditions. Considering the recommendations of forest management, an integrated approach to reforestation is reflected, which ensures sustainable and productive ecosystems in the region. The sub‐Antarctic forests in Tierra del Fuego mountains are considered one of the few remaining wilderness areas on the planet; however, human disturbances like wildfires, exotic species, and so forth exacerbate their degradation. In 2012, a human‐caused wildfire started in a remote forest‐mountain area, and 2 years after that, a reforestation project began to restore the natural canopy layer. Saplings of the native Nothofagus trees were obtained through the bare root method from undisturbed areas. In this study, we evaluated the influence of (1) macro‐ (considering natural topography and vegetation physiognomy) and micro‐environments (topography, canopy cover, substrate, and understory cover) affected by fire; and (2) the extraction size of the saplings (initial size), on survival and growth of planted saplings, over 5 years. Total sapling survival was 41.4% with a mean growth rate of 8.46 cm year−1. Survival and growth were influenced by the studied variables. At a macro‐environment level, tree saplings showed higher success in well‐drained zones, meanwhile at the micro‐environment level saplings performed better in those that contribute to retain soil moisture and avoiding evapotranspiration. We conclude that environmental features influence differentially depending on the scale of analysis. To restore burnt temperate forests applying the bare root method, we recommended using Nothofagus saplings <40 cm tall for better results. In this sense, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the method since comparable results were obtained in other restoration experiences. This method can also be applied in areas without nursery material, when the biology of tagged plants was appropriated, for example shallow growth of root systems, formation of natural tree seedling banks. This work represents one of the few medium‐term restoration experiences reported for the southernmost forests of the planet: our findings could be applied in other reforestation experiences, making noticeable improvements in the recovery process. Deforestation of tropical rainforests is a major land use change that alters terrestrial biogeochemical cycling at local to global scales. Deforestation and subsequent reforestation are likely to impact soil phosphorus (P) cycling, which in P‐limited ecosystems such as the Amazon basin has implications for long‐term productivity. We used a 100‐year replicated observational chronosequence of primary forest conversion to pasture, as well as a 13‐year‐old secondary forest, to test land use change and duration effects on soil P dynamics in the Amazon basin. By combining sequential extraction and P K‐edge X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy with soil phosphatase activity assays, we assessed pools and process rates of P cycling in surface soils (0–10 cm depth). Deforestation caused increases in total P (135–398 mg kg−1), total organic P (Po) (19–168 mg kg−1), and total inorganic P (Pi) (30–113 mg kg−1) fractions in surface soils with pasture age, with concomitant increases in Pi fractions corroborated by sequential fractionation and XANES spectroscopy. Soil non‐labile Po (10–148 mg kg−1) increased disproportionately compared to labile Po (from 4–5 to 7–13 mg kg−1). Soil phosphomonoesterase and phosphodiesterase binding affinity (Km) decreased while the specificity constant (Ka) increased by 83%–159% in 39–100y pastures. Soil P pools and process rates reverted to magnitudes similar to primary forests within 13 years of pasture abandonment. However, the relatively short but representative pre‐abandonment pasture duration of our secondary forest may not have entailed significant deforestation effects on soil P cycling, highlighting the need to consider both pasture duration and reforestation age in evaluations of Amazon land use legacies. Although the space‐for‐time substitution design can entail variation in the initial soil P pools due to atmospheric P deposition, soil properties, and/or primary forest growth, the trend of P pools and process rates with pasture age still provides valuable insights. There are high expectations about the role of active reforestation in mitigating climate change, by means of carbon sequestration and storage, fueling the carbon credit market. Carbon credits are calculated in advance based on the number of planted trees or, at best, the expected size and wood density of planted trees. However, the contribution of tropical reforestations with native species for carbon sequestration in the long term is still unclear, since most sites being monitored are less than 20 years old, thus limiting the ability to make forecasts of what is a dynamic, multifactor restoration outcome. We used a chronosequence to analyze aboveground biomass (AGB) accumulation in 30 Brazilian semi‐deciduous seasonal Atlantic Forest restoration sites sharing the same climate, soil type, and restoration technique. We evaluated the entire age range of 1–19 years, and three age intervals, 1–3 years, 4–8 years, and over 9 years. AGB, basal area, and tree density increased considering all ages (1–19 years). Our results showed, however, that the AGB, tree density, and basal area can increase linearly from 1 to 3 years but present no significant trend after 4 years. Adjusted model r2 values decreased with time, suggesting that the controlled effects of active restoration are quickly replaced by other natural, uncontrolled, and, to some extent, unknown factors. Although continued efforts are needed to make more realistic predictions of long‐term carbon stocks based on tree planting, high levels of biomass estimates for time intervals as short as 20 years may never be achieved. Evolving into a four-decade educational journey, the actions taken showcase enduring ripple effects across 14 states in Brazil, presenting a comprehensive survey of applied techniques in this unique context. The resources required to achieve collective conservation goals witness a continual upswing, a trend expounded in this paper. Hence, we have chronicled the history, methodology, and projects that transpired in response to the ever-evolving community needs. Mapping and monitoring tree seedlings is essential for reforestation and restoration efforts. However, achieving this on a large scale, especially during the initial stages of growth, when seedlings are small and lack distinct morphological features, can be challenging. An accurate, reliable, and efficient method that detects seedlings using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) could significantly reduce survey costs. In this study, we used an unsupervised approach to map young conifer seedlings utilising spatial, spectral, and structural information from UAV digital aerial photogrammetric (UAV-DAP) point clouds. We tested our method across eight trial stands of radiata pine with a wide height range (0.4–6 m) that comprised a total of ca. 100 ha and spanned diverse site conditions. Using this method, seedling detection was excellent, with an overall precision, sensitivity, and F1 score of 95.2%, 98.0%, and 96.6%, respectively. Our findings demonstrated the importance of combining spatial, spectral, and structural metrics for seedling detection. While spectral and structural metrics efficiently filtered out non-vegetation objects and weeds, they struggled to differentiate planted seedlings from regenerating ones due to their similar characteristics, resulting in a large number of false positives. The inclusion of a row segment detection algorithm overcame this limitation and successfully identified most regenerating seedlings, leading to a significant reduction in false positives and an improvement in overall detection accuracy. Our method generated vector files containing seedling positions and key structural characteristics (seedling height, crown dimensions), offering valuable outputs for precision management. This automated pipeline requires fewer resources and user inputs compared to manual annotations or supervised techniques, making it a rapid, cost-effective, and scalable solution which is applicable without extensive training data. While serving as primarily a standalone tool for assessing forestry projects, the proposed method can also complement supervised seedling detection methods like machine learning, i.e., by supplementing training datasets. While much research has focused on genetic variation in plants in relation to abiotic clines in temperate and boreal forests, few studies have examined similar relationships in tropical forests. Genetic variation in desirable performance traits of trees, such as drought tolerance, fast‐growth, and carbon sequestration rates, is widely used to improve reforestation efforts in nontropical systems. However, evolutionary processes such as local adaptation are poorly understood in tropical forests making it difficult to locate desired phenotypes. To test for genetic variation in growth rate in relationship to climatic clines, we conducted a common garden study over 18 months in a nursery using four dipterocarp tree species, represented by 9–12 half‐sib families, sourced across an elevational gradient ranging from lowland to hill forests (circa 130–470 m above sea‐level) in Malaysian Borneo. We found genetic variation in growth for all four species with fast‐growing half‐sib families growing 42–88% faster than poorly performing half‐sib families. Furthermore, in three species we found that elevation of seedling origin predicted seedling performance; in Shorea fallax and S. johorensis, half‐sib families originating from low elevations performed the best. In S. argentifolia half‐sib families' seedlings from low elevations grew slowly. Because elevation is a good proxy for climate, the finding of elevational clines predicting genetic variation in growth provides evidence of evolution affecting the function of tropical tree species. Our research highlights opportunities to better understand evolutionary processes in tropical forests and to use such information to improve seed source selection in reforestation. Reforestation is promoted to address the dual global climate and biodiversity crises. This is particularly relevant for carbon‐rich, biodiverse tropical peatlands, for which active reforestation typically involves two post‐germination stages: nursery rearing of seedlings, then outplanting. Yet, linkages between these stages and cumulative seedling performance are rarely quantified during tropical peatland reforestation. By monitoring tree seedling survival and growth, we investigate factors influencing seedling performance (species identity, seedling source, treatments, and climate), whether nursery performance predicts outplanting performance, and calculate cumulative survival (nursery plus outplanting) in Sebangau National Park, Indonesian Borneo. Standardized survival at 2 years was higher in the nursery (mean 67% across 40 species) than outplanting (44% across 24 species). For nursery and outplanting, species identity was the main source of variation in survival and height growth. Seedling source, treatments, site condition, and precipitation had no significant impact on survival but did influence growth in some cases. Nursery survival did not predict outplanting survival, but nursery height did predict outplanting height. Across species, around a quarter of seedlings survived from nursery to outplanting over 4 years. Cumulative survival represents a more realistic basis for assessing the genetic and other resource costs of tropical peatland reforestation. Our two‐phase approach identified outplanting as the greater bottleneck to cumulative seedling survivability. We argue that the nursery stage may be used to harden seedlings for degraded peatland conditions by selecting more relevant treatments (e.g. flooding) and screening for resilience to common disturbances (e.g. fire) to enhance outplanted, and thus cumulative, seedling survival. Woodland cover in Britain has increased over the past century and is set to increase further through woodland creation schemes aiming to tackle climate change. Nonetheless, the wider repercussions of increasing woodland cover for species, especially invertebrates, have not been comprehensively assessed.Here, we quantified the woodland associations of 2762 invertebrate species in Britain across 21 broad taxon groups using species occurrence records collected by specialist recording societies. We then related the strength of species' woodland associations to published estimates of their long‐term national distribution trends between 1970 and 2015.Across all taxa, 29% of species were positively associated with broadleaf woodland cover, whereas 27% of species were negatively associated. There was a slight tendency for species associated with broadleaf woodland to have more positive long‐term distribution trends, but the effect had little explanatory power. For 15% of species, we detected a non‐monotonic association with broadleaf woodland cover, such that their occurrence peaked at intermediate levels of cover. Intermediate‐cover species had more positive long‐term distribution trends than species with monotonic positive or negative woodland associations.Our findings suggest that woodland invertebrates have not consistently increased, despite the increases in woodland cover. While some caution is warranted owing to our use of heterogeneous occurrence records, the considerable variation in distribution trends of woodland‐associated species could be explained by the high diversity of woodland species and ways in which they use woodland habitat. Studies of stream ecosystem metabolism over decades are rare and focused on responses to a single factor, e.g., nutrient reduction or storms. Numerous studies document that light, temperature, allochthonous inputs, nutrients, and flow affect metabolism. We use measurements spanning ~ 40 years to examine the interplay of all these influences on metabolism in forested and meadow reaches of a rural stream in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Measurements made in 1971–1975 used benthic substrata transferred to chambers (Period 1, P1), and ones in 1997–2010 used open system methodology (P2). Metabolism was greater in the Meadow reach both periods. Gross primary productivity (GPP) was driven primarily by light and chlorophyll, and respiration (R) by temperature and inclusion of hyporheic metabolism. Annually, processes were nearly balanced (Forested reach) or dominated by autotrophy (Meadow reach) in P1. Heterotrophy predominated in both reaches in P2, fueled by litter inputs (Forested reach) and fine particulate organic matter from the agricultural watershed (Meadow reach). Storms reduced GPP, R, and chlorophyll in proportion to storm size, but had less influence than other environmental factors. Riparian-zone reforestation of the P1 Meadow reach resulted in incident light and GPP similar to that in the permanent Forested reach within ~ 20 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bare gravel bed channels have been a common landscape feature of the middle reaches of rivers throughout Japan. They are disappearing these days because of vegetation colonization. Vegetation coverage of the riparian zones in the midstream reaches of rivers distributed throughout Japan was investigated using aerial photo images taken in 1946, 1975, and 2010. It was then compared with hydrological and water quality records, locations of dams and weirs, residential conditions of the surrounding areas, sediment yields, and forest coverage of the upstream mountainous areas. Riparian vegetation coverage has substantially increased in the last 70 years, from nearly 0 to 30–40%. Herbaceous vegetation coverage is higher than tree coverage. The total vegetation coverage did not correlate with water quality parameters. However, vegetation coverage had a significant negative correlation with the upstream basin's sediment yield and a slight negative correlation with the maximum flood peak flow rate. It was positively correlated with the terrestrial area fraction between levees. Riparian vegetation coverage was high within the 2 km downstream of dams or weirs, intercepting sediment flows. These results indicated that the gravelly sediment supplied from the upstream and deposited in the midstream at flood time has been the major contributor to keeping the vegetation coverage low rather than flushing by flood water. Reforestation since World War II has reduced the coarse sediment supply into the midstream river channels. This reforestation, together with gravel mining and intercepting sediment flow by dams and weirs, has caused the recent increase in vegetation coverage of the riparian zones. Larix decidua Mill. may become more important than Picea abies (L.) Karst for reforestation and restoration of the natural balance, and therefore it is necessary to investigate this species. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct an inventory of Larix taxa in the protected areas of the mixed forest zone of Ukrainian Polissia, to analyse their distribution, age structure, and use. Research methods used: route, analytical, comparative analysis, systematisation. It was found that 5 species, one variety and two hybrids of larch grow in the protected areas of the mixed forest zone of Ukraine. It was established that L. decidua is the most widespread - it grows in parks-monuments of landscape art, natural monuments, protected tracts, reserves in pure mixed plantings, alleys, row plantings, groups and as a solitaire tree. L. sibirica, L. kaempferi grow as solitaire trees and in groups of 3 to 10 specimens in 9 and 10 protected objects, respectively. L. gmelinii is present in two arboretums, L. laricina - in one. Larix decidua var. polonica (Racib. ex Wóycicki) Ostenf. & Syrach is not widespread, represented in groups in 6 parks-monuments of landscape art and Bereznivskyi denrorark. Larix × eurolepis A. Henry. is widespread in pure and mixed stands, grows in an alley in the Slavianskyi park-monument of landscape art, in groups - in the Lisova Aleia Botanical Reserve, Bereznivskyi denrorark, and in mixed stands of the Riznolissia General Zoological Reserve. The age structure is quite diverse, represented by L. decidua, L. sibirica, L. decidua var. polonica aged from 100 to 200 years. Other species, varieties, and hybrids are represented by specimens aged from 3 years (L.×eurolepis) to 80 years (L. kaempferi). 69.2% of larch stands are in good condition, 28.9% are in satisfactory condition, and only 1.9% are in poor condition. This study was conducted to examine the impacts of dust on leaf mineral elements and selected physiological responses of three different Oak species in Western Zagros, Iran. Three-year-old seedlings of the Oak species Quercus brantii, Q. libani and Q. infectoria were exposed to dust under natural conditions. Photosynthesis, chlorophyll, proline and selected leaf mineral elements were examined in a two-factorial experiment including species (Q. brantii, Q. libani and Q. infectoria) and dust exposure (dust-exposed and without dust as control). The results showed that dust had a significant effect on photosynthesis rate of all species. Dust decreased photosynthesis rate to about 38%, 13% and 32% for Q. brantii, Q. libani and Q. infectoria, respectively. Dust also had a significant effect on proline and chlorophyll content of Oak leaves. Q. infectoria had the lowest total chlorophyll content with 42%. Among the studied species, Q. libani appears to be most suitable for growing under dust exposure, as this species had the lowest reduction in chlorophyll and photosynthesis. Planting Q. libani on northern slopes in Zagros forests, where Oak forests receive higher precipitation, presumably enhances the success of forest restoration under the combined effects of climate change and dust exposure. In the present era, assumptions on tugai forests consist of a complex floodplain ecosystem (reedcattail thickets, gallery forests, halophytic shrubs, and grass biocenoses) of various ecological levels located from the water's edge to the upper floodplains and riverine shafts. Anthropogenic transformations disrupted the natural dynamics of the tugai ecosystem. The presented study sought to characterize the current state of tugai forests in different regions of Kazakhstan to conduct monitoring of forest entomology and determine the reforestation potential of tugai plants in the floodplains of the Syr Darya and Ili rivers of Kazakhstan. The recent work focused on vital aspects associated with reinstating tugai forests. Special monitoring of forest pests progressed for the timely detection of their reproduction bulk, foci development, and plan extinction measures. The forest entomology monitoring results revealed the destruction of plants due to leaf-gnawing and gall-forming insect pests. A laid out 27 test areas investigated the dynamics of the undergrowth in tugai forests. The reproductive capacity of the plants, viz., Populus diversifolia, Elaeágnus angustifólia, Sálix acutifólia, and Salix wilhelmsiana, attained evaluation. The Muara Karang steam power plant is one of the power plants in Indonesia which is managed by PT PLN Nusantara Power as a state-owned company. In carrying out its business, it has potential impacts on the environment, one of which is on biodiversity. The aim of this research is to analyze the potential of biodiversity resources by conserving critical land in the Organic Forest, Megamendung, Bogor, Indonesia. The method used is a natural forest model scenario including organic farming, reforestation, and sustainable organic farming in a natural rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is carried out using an agroforestry system, intercropping between forestry and agricultural crops, and fertilization using manure. This planting was carried out by the community as a form of empowerment which succeeded in creating jobs as farmers and participating in managing the forest. As a start, 3,000 tree seeds and intercrops such as edamame, corn, cassava, and taro have been planted. The results of this research in monitoring in 2022, the proportion of tree habitat increased from 40% to 54%, the diversity index (H') of birds increased from 2.17 to 3.22, H' of mammals from 1.76 to 2.05, H' of herpetofauna from 2.08 to 2.82, and H' of arthropods from 3.73 to 3.87. Ecological restoration of mangrove ecosystems that became susceptible to recent habitat perturbations is crucial for tropical coast conservation. The white mangrove Laguncularia racemosa, a pioneer species inhabiting intertidal environments of the Atlantic East Pacific (AEP) region, has been used for reforestation in China for decades. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its fast growth and high adaptive potential remain unknown. Using PacBio single‐molecule real‐time sequencing, we completed a high‐quality L. racemosa genome assembly covering 1105 Mb with scaffold N50 of 3.46 Mb. Genomic phylogeny shows that L. racemosa invaded intertidal zones during a period of global warming. Multi‐level genomic convergence analyses between L. racemosa and three native dominant mangrove clades show that they experienced convergent changes in genes involved in nutrient absorption and high salinity tolerance. This may explain successful L. racemosa adaptation to stressful intertidal environments after introduction. Without recent whole‐genome duplications or activated transposable elements, L. racemosa has retained many tandem gene duplications. Some of them are involved in auxin biosynthesis, intense light stress and cold stress response pathways, associated with L. racemosa's ability to grow fast under high light or cold conditions when used for reforestation. In summary, our study identifies shared mechanisms of intertidal environmental adaptation and unique genetic changes underlying fast growth in mangrove‐unfavourable conditions and sheds light on the molecular mechanisms of the white mangrove utility in ecological restoration. Countries like Mexico make significant efforts to reforest, but the results are not good due to the low survival rates caused by drought and water stress. Therefore, the effect of applying hydrated phenolic foam at plantation moment, on the survival and growth in Pinus leiophylla and Pinus teocote was assessed. Two trials were established, one for each species, with five treatments of different volumes of hydrated phenolic foam. The variables measured were survival, growth in height and diameter. The analyzes showed that hydrated phenolic foam significantly increases survival and height growth in Pinus leiophylla, but not in Pinus teocote. Abies fraseri (Fraser Fir) has a range that is restricted to high-elevation stands in the southern Appalachian Mountains with few suitable locations. Adelgid piceae (Balsam Wooly Adelgid) depredation that induced high mortality and chronic losses, and other anthropogenic causes, have led to Fraser Fir being designated as an endangered species by the IUCN Red List. There is great interest in restoring Fraser Fir through managed reforestation efforts, especially in protected areas such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park. To optimize Fraser Fir reestablishment in formerly forested sites, we designed a study to examine reforestation success by comparing survival and growth using treatments including mycorrhizal seedling transplants, local seedling transplants, local soil inocula, and mulching conditions to suppress surrounding vegetation. We found that while some treatments increased seedling survival and growth, any benefit was slight compared to local seedling transplants from adjacent mature Fraser Fir stands and/or local soil inocula. Greenhouse manipulations were more costly and time intensive for very little added benefit. We conclude that transplanting local seedlings with native soil to restore damaged sites provides the maximum return on investment and is a viable option for reforestation of Fraser Fir, but a sufficient local seedling bank may not always be available. From distributed or semidistributed hydrological models, it is possible to identify where land use decisions can bring greater economic benefits in relation to water use. This study aimed to integrate simulations of a hydrological model varying the land use in four reforestation scenarios that influence the economic benefits of provision environmental services, including the user's alternatives as a key parameter and finally estimating the economic value of such benefits. The "avoided costs" method was used for economic valuation of flow regularization service and adequacy of water quality in the Piracicaba River basin, aiming to generate various economic instruments to support decision makers. The cost for water storage was estimated from the rising rain volume infiltrating the soil from the change in the dynamics of land use, whereas the cost of maintaining water quality was obtained from the variation between the effects of scenarios in nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment loads. The valuation methodology allowed us to estimate the avoided costs, which will mainly contribute to application of economic instruments to manage water resources, directing land use decisions in hydrographic basins, guiding environmental impact assessment studies, and the definition of mitigation measures. The restoration of degraded mangrove habitats is a global priority. In countries such as India, the significance of coastal mangrove forests is deeply embedded after the 2004 tsunami and numerous cyclones that caused immense damage to coastal communities. Mangrove restoration drives have been carried out in several regions across the Indian coast. However, the establishment of mangrove nurseries using plastic bags to plant seedlings results in a large amount of plastic waste at the end of each plantation drive. People have tried to combat this issue of plastic pollution by adopting alternative methods but encountered several drawbacks and hitches. In this study, hand‐woven Palmyra (Borassus flabellifer, Arecaceae) bags were experimented with as a replacement for plastic bags to grow seedlings. The bags were able to withstand water inundation conditions similar to those of mangrove tidal flats for a maximum of 6 months, beyond which they disintegrated. The mangrove seedlings showed good growth similar to that in plastic bags, but the roots were well spread in Palmyra bags compared to plastic bags. In addition, during plantation, the seedling along with the bag could be planted as the bags were biodegradable, which is an advantage over plastic bags that need to be removed. Moreover, since local fishermen community members prepared these bags, it provided them with an alternative source of livelihood. This study compares the performances of six indigenous (Acacia albida, Acacia nilotica, Acacia senegalensis, Balanites aegyptiaca, Tamarindus indica, Ziziphus spina‐christi) and one exotic (Azadirachta indica) tree species for the reforestation of a degraded soil (hardé) in the Far North Region of Cameroon. Seedlings were transplanted from the enviroprotect nursery (Maroua) to Gawel ReviTec (revitalization technology) sites (GW1, GW2) in May 2015. A subset of trees from biosoil plots was monitored at 26, 38 and 50 months after transplantation. Survival rate, height, stem diameter and growth volume were measured and revealed lower values at GW2 than at GW1 in general. A. indica and A. nilotica performed better, with respective survival rates of 78 and 67% at GW1, against lower than 50% at GW2 for all species, the highest (45%) accounting for A. nilotica. Stem diameter (91 and 87 cm), height (318 and 308 cm) and growth volume (33 and 42 m3) were higher for A. nilotica, followed by A. indica (stem diameter: 90 and 83 cm; height: 248 and 278 cm; growth volume: 20 and 20 m3), respectively, at GW1 and GW2. These results suggest A. indica and A. nilotica as the most successful and indicated species for the reforestation of hardé soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deforestation for the development of agricultural land is a critical driver of biodiversity loss. We examined the relationships between tree species and environments after the abandonment of a plot of land at the Mae Klong Watershed Research Station, Western Thailand. Vegetation monitoring was conducted every two years on a 16-ha permanent plot established in 2011 until 2019. All trees with diameter at breast height (DBH)=1 cm were measured. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was performed to investigate the relationships between tree species and environments. We found a total of 199 tree species in the plot, which comprised both pioneer and climax species. The high tree density and low basal area were 1,280 stem/ha and 7.30 m2/ha, respectively. During 2011-2019, the species richness and total tree density were decreased by nine species (from 206 to 197 species) and 83 stem/ha (from 1,120 to 1,037 stem/ha). In contrast, the total basal area increased from 6.41 to 7.26 stem/ha. According to the measured environmental variables, mixed deciduous species such as Pterocarpus macrocarpus and Xylia xylocarpa var. kerrii preferred higher elevations and drier sites compared to dry evergreen species such as Dipterocarpus alatus. Early colonizing species such as Trema orientalis and Ficus species exhibited rapid population decreases, whereas climax species such as Lagerstroemia tomentosa exhibited highly successful regeneration under natural conditions. Artificial reforestation efforts may be required in areas with large disturbance, including the planting of mixed tree species to promote natural regeneration and reduce the recovery period.
