This article examines Rodney King's appearance on the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2008. The author analyzes King's account of his 1991 beating by the Los Angeles Police Department and how it aligns with the affective labor of reality television's theater of suffering. The article explores how King's testimony ruptures the genre's neoliberal, colorblind ideologies and reveals his attempt to reclaim a publicly commodified identity. It also discusses the temporality of Black trauma and the televisual archive of self that King constructed. The article highlights the exploitation and commodification of Black trauma in reality television, but also the potential for reclamation and revision. [Extracted from the article]

After May 2, 2022, heritage conservation briefly became a hot topic in the world of celebrity gossip. That evening, Kim Kardashian, a reality TV star and entrepreneur, wore a 60-year-old dress that had belonged to Marilyn Monroe to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute Gala. In wearing Monroe's dress, Kardashian sought to channel the glamor and celebrity of the mid-century star. She also summoned the ire of museum professionals, who considered her choice to wear a fragile historical garment a flagrant violation of conservation ethics. Yet increasingly, the discipline of conservation has come to recognize that an object's 'integrity' does not rest solely in its physical materials – and the emerging discourse of performance conservation, informed by research into the conservation of contemporary art as well as intangible cultural heritage, emphasizes the active lives of what I call 'performative objects' over their physical form and static appearance. Here, I posit that Kardashian's wearing of Monroe's dress may be understood as a form of conservation – perhaps not of the dress itself, but of the performance of which that dress was an integral part, and without which, I argue, the dress has little significance. To make this argument, I will also draw on innovative approaches to the conservation of Indigenous heritage that recognize the preservation value of reanimating objects from the past. Establishing Monroe's dress as a 'performative object,' an item inextricably linked to the body in motion, I endeavor to show how performance itself preserves the past. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MENTAL health services ,HEALTH Insurance Portability & Accountability Act ,REALITY television program participants ,MEDICAL personnel ,REALITY therapy ,COUPLES therapy - Abstract
Reality TV therapy sessions, particularly those featured on Bravo shows, have become a popular phenomenon. While some viewers appreciate the normalization of therapy and the opportunity to learn about mental health, others feel uncomfortable with the public disclosure of private details. Therapists acknowledge that the therapy seen on reality TV is not the same as real-world therapy, as the presence of cameras and the need for sensationalism can impact the dynamics and authenticity of the sessions. However, the exposure of therapy on TV can help reduce stigma and make treatment more accessible for viewers who may be hesitant to seek help. It is important for viewers to approach these on-screen therapy sessions with caution and to do their own research if they are interested in pursuing therapy. [Extracted from the article]

Prior to watching Netflix's hit show, Squid Game, I was proud to say that I was someone who was a true connoisseur of reality television. Like millions of Americans who tune in to their favorite "trash TV" show, I would always look forward to turning on my TV at the end of a long day, sitting back in my pajamas, and binge-watching my favorite reality television shows. And, unlike many viewers, I was not ashamed to say this was one of my favorite hobbies. However, after watching Squid Game, my passion for reality television also grew into a concern for the potential welfare of the various participants. Although the show is highly dramatized in its portrayal of the harm done to participants in a competition-based reality program, Squid Game provides a useful springboard for discussion to see what could possibly happen if we continue to allow executives and networks to do as they like (without regard for the welfare of their participants) . . . all for the sake of drawing in ratings and maintaining the attention of viewers. This article examines the multitude of potential legal issues involved in reality television show participation through an exploration of the various abuses done to both Squid Game and "real life" reality TV participants. Then, after evaluating the near unconscionability of real-life reality television arrangements, this Article will provide two solutions that could even out the playing field between networks/producers/executives and participants: (1) adoption of the Ofcom duty of care standard in reality television contracts that the UK implemented in December 2020 and (2) permitted unionization of reality television participants in order to ensure more effective bargaining. The willingness to support (or denigrate) high‐profile individuals online was examined across cultures using the Tall Poppy Scale. A sample of 106 Chinese and 164 New Zealand Europeans answered an online questionnaire addressing their preference for high achievers to be rewarded or fail. Participants were asked whether they would vote to support reality TV contestants, and offered further information (about success or failure) on a debrief page. The Favour Reward scale predicted willingness to vote and support others. The Favour Fall subscale tended to predict time spent viewing achievement‐related information on a debrief page. The Chinese sample did not prefer reward of high achievers, instead favoring their fall, but spent less time per click on the debrief page, suggesting they disliked recognizing individual achievement. This article explores the relationship between the arrival of early mobile communication technologies and the emergence of reality television (TV) contestants from the Northeast region, particularly Assam. It argues that such networked communication infrastructures enabled marginalised and aspirational publics to mobilise and assert their identities in an evolving mediascape; specifically, how these publics deploy telecommunication and media infrastructures to acquire media visibility. This correlation is examined via the success story of Debojit Saha—the first reality TV star from the Northeast. Significantly, his win was credited to a rigorous, coordinated SMS voting campaign conducted by local student and socio-political unions. Hitherto marginalised regional identities emerged as key players in development of the digital television culture in a neoliberal economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the phrase "Build the Wall" and its role in the U.S. presidential election campaign. It explains that while the phrase was used by Donald Trump in 2016 to tap into xenophobic sentiments, this time it is being used by Republicans to associate Vice President Kamala Harris with President Joe Biden's perceived failure to address migration. However, the article argues that focusing on the border issue may work against Trump, as border crossings have actually declined in recent months and the underlying issues causing migration have not been addressed. Additionally, the article highlights that the construction of a wall was already underway before Trump's presidency and that immigration is important for the strength and growth of the United States. 43. Why Americans do political speeches so well (and debates so badly).

The recent Democratic National Convention in Chicago showcased impressive speeches, with Kamala Harris delivering a strong acceptance speech. However, the oratorical power of Michelle and Barack Obama surpassed even Harris's speech. The US has a tradition of visionary speeches, from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King Jr., which infuse events like party conventions. In contrast, Australian politicians are not expected to deliver the same kind of soaring rhetoric. US political speeches are influenced by Hollywood and the tradition of preaching, while Australian politicians must adapt to the secularism of Australian culture. The spectacle of US party conventions reflects the weakness of American political parties, with fragmented party organizations lacking central authority. In Australia, power struggles occur behind closed doors within party hierarchies. US politicians rely on personalized campaigns and compelling speeches to stand out, while Australian politicians are rewarded for other political skills. While US politicians excel in scripted speeches, Australian politicians perform better in unscripted scenarios like debates. The structure of US Congress, designed to avoid factions, limits the opportunity for engaging debates. The physical format of Westminster parliaments in Australia fosters an adversarial nature. US presidential debates are often forgettable, with the most recent one ending Joe Biden's hopes of a second presidency. In the US, political speeches resemble sermons, while in Australia, "preaching" is typically avoided. [Extracted from the article]

Reality TV shows often rely on drama, conflict, and scandal to attract viewers. This can sometimes be organic, as in shows like Survivor, or manufactured by producers, causing harm to contestants. However, there are many reality shows that focus on cooperation and compassion instead. Some examples include "The Casketeers," a docuseries set in a funeral home in New Zealand, and "L'Agence/The Parisian Agency," which follows a warm family dynamic in the luxury real estate industry. Other shows like "What the Love!" and "Match Fit" offer makeovers and reflections on personal growth. Japan has also mastered wholesome reality TV with shows like "Ai no Sato/Love Village," where contestants renovate a house together. Lastly, competitive baking shows like "Bake Squad" and skill-based competitions like "The Great British Sewing Bee" provide a cozy and achievable atmosphere. [Extracted from the article]
