1. Non-perturbative renormalization of the QCD flavour-singlet local vector current

Abstract

We compute non-perturbatively the renormalization constant of the flavour-singlet local vector current $Z_V$ in lattice QCD with 3 massless flavours. Gluons are discretized by the Wilson plaquette action while quarks by the O($a$)-improved Wilson--Dirac operator. The constant $Z_V$ is fixed by comparing the expectation values (1-point functions) of the conserved and local vector currents at finite temperature in the presence of shifted boundary conditions and at non-zero imaginary chemical potential. Monte Carlo simulations with a moderate computational cost allow us to obtain $Z_V$ with an accuracy of about 8\textperthousand\, for values of the inverse bare coupling constant $\beta=6/g_0^2$ in the range $5.3 \leq \beta \leq 11.5$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, minor changes

2. Study of a model for the folding of a small protein

Abstract

We describe the results obtained from an improved model for protein folding. We find that a good agreement with the native structure of a 46 residue long, five-letter protein segment is obtained by carefully tuning the parameters of the self-avoiding energy. In particular we find an improved free-energy profile. apeNEXT is a new generation APE processor, optimized for LGT simulations. The new project follows the basic ideas of previous APE machines and develops simple and cheap parallel systems with multi-Tfiops processing power. This paper describes the main features of this new development.

The apeNEXT system is the latest in the APE collaboration's series of parallel computers for computationally intensive calculations such as quantum chromodynamics on the lattice. The authors describe the computer architectural choices that have been shaped by almost two decades of collaboration activity.

Abstract

In this talk I report on the status of the apeNEXT project. apeNEXT is the last of a family of parallel computers designed, in a research environment, to provide multi-teraflops computing power to scientists involved in heavy numerical simulations. The architecture and the custom chip axe optimized for Lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations but the favourable price performance ratio and the good efficiency for other kind of calculations make it a quite interesting tool for a large class of scientific problems

Abstract

We present the apeNEXT project which is currently developing a massively parallel computer with a multi-TFlops performance. Like previous APE machines. the new supercomputer is completely custom designed and is specifically optimized for simulating the theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We assess the performance for key application kernels and make a comparison with other machines used for these kind of simulations. Finally, we give an outlook on future developments

Abstract

We present the current status of the apeNEXT project. Aim of this project is the development of the next generation of APE machines which will provide multi-teraflop computing power. Like previous machines, apeNEXT is based on a custom designed processor, which is specifically optimized for simulating QCD. We discuss the machine design, report on benchmarks, and give an overview on the status of the software development.

Abstract

APE is a family of supercomputers architecturally optimized for the numerical simulation of quantum field theories. Current generation APE systems (APEmille) have been commissioned at several European sites. When all planned systems are installed, later this year, a total peak processing power of about 2 TFlops will be available. A new generation system, apeNEXT, is under development. It adds several new features to the established APE architecture. Performance will be boosted towards the 10 Tflops range. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

This paper presents the status of the APEmille project, which is essentially completed, as far as machine development and construction is concerned. Several large installations of APEmille are in use for physics production runs leading to many new results presented at this conference. This paper briefly summarizes the APEmille architecture, reviews the status of the installations and presents some performance figures for physics codes.

We will then devote the rest of the talk to the description of a new project for a multi-TeraFlop machine, apeNEXT. We report on the progress and status of the integration and test of APEmille, a SIMD parallel computer optimised for Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) with a peak performance in the TeraFlops range. 23. NNLO unquenched calculation of the b quark mass

Abstract

By combining the first unquenched lattice computation of the B-meson binding energy and the two-loop contribution to the lattice HQET residual mass, we determine the (ar{{MS}}) (b)-quark mass, (ar{m}_{b}(ar{m}_{b})). The inclusion of the two-loop corrections is essential to extract (ar{m}_{b}(ar{m}_{b})) with a precision of ({cal O}(Lambda^{2}_{QCD}/m_{b})), which is the uncertainty due to the renormalon singularities in the perturbative series of the residual mass. Our best estimate is (ar{m}_{b}(ar{m}_{b}) = (4.26 pm 0.09) { m GeV}), where we have combined the different errors in quadrature. A detailed discussion of the systematic errors contributing to the final number is presented. Our results have been obtained on a sample of (60) lattices of size (24^{3} imes 40) at (eta =5.6), using the Wilson action for light quarks and the lattice HQET for the (b) quark, at two values of the sea quark masses. The quark propagators have been computed using the unquenched links generated by the T(chi)L Collaboration.

In this project, the design and construction of a parallel computer optimized for lattice quantum chromo dynamics (LQCD) was submitted to INFN for funding. The result was the APE computer. The development of this machine set a new standard of precision at the end of the 80s.

Abstract

We present a study of the heavy-light spectrum and of the D- and B-meson decay constants. The results were obtained in the quenched approximation, by using the nonperturbatively improved clover lattice action at (Formula presented) with a sample of (Formula presented) configurations, on a (Formula presented) lattice. After a careful analysis of the systematic errors present in the extraction of the physical results, by assuming quite conservative discretization errors, we find (Formula presented) (Formula presented) (Formula presented) (Formula presented) (Formula presented) (Formula presented) Our results, which have smaller discretization errors than many previous estimates at fixed value of the lattice spacing a, support a large value of (Formula presented) in the quenched approximation. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

We determine the quark masses and the chiral condensate in the MSbar scheme at NNLO from Lattice QCD in the quenched approximation at beta=6.0, beta=6.2 and beta=6.4 using both the Wilson and the tree-level improved SW-Clover fermion action. We extract these quantities using the Vector and the Axial Ward Identities and non-perturbative values of the renormalization constants. We compare the results obtained with the two methods and we study the O(a) dependence of the quark masses for both actions

28. The QCD chiral condensate from the lattice

Abstract

We determine the chiral condensate from simulations of quenched lattice QCD with Wilson fermions. Our measurements have been obtained with high statistics at three values of the gauge coupling, corresponding to UV cutoffs in the range 2 - 4 GeV. Several improvements have been made with respect to earlier lattice computations. The most important are the non-perturbative renormalization of the condensate, the use of the tree-level improved Clover action and the reduction of the systematic error due to uncertainties in the lattice calibration. Our result for the chiral condensate in the $\msbar$ scheme is (\bar\psi \psi)^{\msbar}(mu = 2 GeV) = - 0.0147(8)(16)(12) GeV^3 = - [245(4)(9)(7) MeV]^3 where the first error is statistical, the second is due to the non-perturbative renormalization and the third due to the lattice calibration.

Abstract

We compute non-perturbatively the renormalization constants of quark bilinears on the lattice in the quenched approximation at three values of the coupling beta=6/g_0^2=6.0,6.2,6.4 using both the Wilson and the tree-level improved SW-Clover fermion action. We perform a Renormalization Group analysis at the next-to-next-to-leading order and compute Renormalization Group invariant values for the constants. The results are applied to obtain a fully non-perturbative estimate of the vector and pseudoscalar decay constants.

Abstract

We present results for the light meson masses and decay constants as obtained from calculations with the non-perturbatively improved (`Alpha') action and operators on a 24^3 \times 64 lattice at beta = 6.2, in the quenched approximation. The analysis was performed in a way consistent with O(a) improvement. We obtained: reasonable agreement with experiment for the hyperfine splitting; f_K=156(17) MeV, f_pi =139(22) MeV, f_K/f_pi = 1.13(4) ; f_{K*}=219(7) MeV, f_rho =199(15) MeV, f_phi =235(4) MeV; f_{K*}^{T}(2 GeV) = 178(10) MeV, f_rho^{T}(2 GeV) =165(11) MeV, where f_V^{T} is the coupling of the tensor current to the vector mesons; the chiral condensate <\bar{q}q>^\bar{MS} (2 GeV)= - (253 +/- 25 MeV)^3. Our results are compared to those obtained with the unimproved Wilson action. We also verified that the free-boson lattice dispersion relation describes our results very accurately for a large range of momenta.

Abstract

We present a study of ${\cal O}(2000)$ (quenched) lattice configurations from the APE collaboration, for $6.0\le\beta\le 6.4$ using both the Wilson and the SW-Clover fermion action. We determine the light hadronic spectrum and meson decay constants. We extract the inverse lattice spacing using data at the simulated values of the quark mass. We find an agreement with the experimental data of $\sim 5%$ for mesonic masses and $\sim 10%-15%$ for baryonic masses and pseudoscalar decay constants. A larger deviation is present for the vector decay constants.

Abstract

We present a high statistics study of the D- and B-meson decay constants. The results were obtained by using the Clover and Wilson lattice actions at two different values of the lattice spacing $a$, corresponding to $\beta=6.0$ and 6.2. After a careful analysis of the systematic errors present in the extraction of the physical results, by assuming quite conservative discretization errors, we find $f_{D_s}=237 \pm 16$ MeV, $f_{D} = 221 \pm 17$ MeV ($f_{D_s}/f_D=1.07(4)$), $f_{B_s} = 205 \pm 35$ MeV, $f_{B} = 180 \pm 32$ MeV ($f_{B_s}/f_B=1.14(8)$), in good agreement with previous estimates.

Abstract

The investigation of light sea-quark effects in lattice QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions requires both larger physical volumes and finer lattice resolutions than achieved previously. As high-end supercomputers like the 512-node APE Tower provide the compute power to perform a major step towards the chiral limit (T-chi-L), we have launched a feasibility study on a 24^3 x 40 lattice. We approach the chiral limit--while refining the resolution--, using the standard Wilson fermion action. Following previous work, our Hybrid Monte Carlo simulation runs at beta=5.6 and two kappa-values, 0.1575 and 0.158. From our study, we are confident that, for the APE Tower, a realistic working point has been found corresponding to a volume of 2 fm^3, with chirality characterized by 1/(a m_pi) = 5.6.

Abstract

Using the recent relatively precise experimental results on the pion structure function obtained from Drell-Yan processes, we quantitatively test an old model where the structure function of any hadron is determined by that of its constituent quarks. In this model the pion structure function can be predicted from the known nucleon structure function. We find that the data support the model, at least as a good first approximation.

40. Failure of local duality in inclusive non-leptonic heavy flavour decays

Abstract

We argue that there is strong experimental evidence in the data of b-and c-decays that the pattern of power suppressed corrections predicted by the short distance expansion, the heavy quark effective theory and the assumption of local duality is not correct for the non-leptonic inclusive widths. The data indicate instead the presence of 1/m corrections that should be absent in the above theoretical framework. These corrections can be simply described by replacing the heavy quark mass by the mass of the decaying hadron in the m5 factor in front of all the non-leptonic widths.

Abstract

We describe APEmille, the latest generation of the APE parallel processors. This machine, an evolution of the APE100 concept, is very efficient for LGT simulations as well as for a broader class of applications requiring massive floating point computations. Several new features characterise this evolution. In particular local addressing capabilities are added to all computing nodes. APEmille also exhibits a higher degree of integration with a network of workstations acting as a global host system. An APEmille system in the Teraflops range will be completed in three-four years. 42. Results for the B-meson decay constant from the APE collaboration

Abstract

The decay constant for the B-meson in the static limit is calculated using the Wilson and clover actions at various lattice spacings. We show that both the contamination of our results by excited states and the effects finite lattice spacing are at most the order of the statistical uncertainties. A comparison is made of our results and those obtained in other studies. Values for f(Bs)(stat)/f(B)(stat) and M(Bs) - M(B) are also given

Abstract

The light quark results from three different simulations are summarized. We get consistent results, within our statistics, between smeared and non smeared data. A comparison is performed with similar results from the UKQCD collaboration. All runs have been performed on two 6.4 GF APE computers [1]

Abstract

The decay constants of the heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons are studied in a high statistics run using the Wilson action at beta = 6.0 and beta = 6.2, and the clover action at beta = 6.0. The systematics of O(a) discretisation errors are discussed. Our best estimates of the decay constants are: f(D) = 218(9) MeV, f(D)/f(D s) = 1.11(1) and we obtain preliminary values for f(B)

Abstract

We present the preliminary results obtained on the 6 Gigaflop prototype which is the building block of the APE-100 computer. Results are presented for pseudoscalar and vector mesons for the Wilson and the improved action with a statistics of about 100 configurations. Static heavy-light meson propagator have also been studied for different smeared operators. We find that large smearing (greater-than-or-equal-to 9) are bad projectors on the lightest pseudoscalar states

50. Status of the APE-100 project

Abstract

APE-100 is an evolution of the APE architecture. The goal is to reach a peak speed of 100 GFlops and a memory of 8 GByte supposed to be enough to remove the quenched approximation. I'll give a short description of the hardware and the software as well as a schedule of the project. © 1992.
