A recent study conducted by sleep specialists at the Geneva University Hospitals explored the use of sleep engineering to reduce nightmares and improve overall sleep quality. Participants with nightmare disorder underwent therapy and listened to a specific piano chord associated with positive dream narratives while wearing a sleep-engineering headband. The results showed that participants experienced fewer nightmares and more positive dreams. Manipulating sleep could have potential benefits for conditions such as mood, memory, and motor skills, but more research is needed, and there may be risks associated with manipulating memory during sleep. Other studies have shown that specific scents and sound cues delivered during sleep can enhance memory, with implications for memory improvement in older adults and stroke patients. Additionally, REM sleep dreams may help defuse strong emotions attached to memories and could potentially be used in the treatment of depression or PTSD. However, there are still risks and limitations to consider when tampering with memories during sleep. [Extracted from the article]
